This week's episode is a bit different. Host Sally Hubbard and producer Carolyn Duncan sit down to discuss some of the issues brought up by last week's interview of Gretchen Rubin. Gretchen's Four Tendencies personality paradigm indicates that men are "obligers"in equal numbers as women. Essentially, Obligers are people pleasers, most easily meeting expectations placed on them by others. So how is it that the selfless mother who "takes care" is the vaulted feminine archetype while the man who "takes charge" is most valued under stereotypical gender roles? We take a look at the vastly different external expectations placed on men and women. And we talk about the challenges of embracing women's unique strengths while acknowledging that the differences within the genders are greater than the differences between them.
After Brooke's recent Slow Home Podcast episode with habits queen Gretchen Rubin turned into a quasi-counselling session, the girls thought it was time they took a good look at habits. Working through Gretchen's Four Tendencies for Habit Change, Kelly and Brooke are, not surprisingly, quite different. Kelly is a strong Upholder (meaning she finds new habits easy to adopt once she's committed) while Brooke leans more towards an Obliger tendency with more than a touch of Rebel (meaning she is far more likely to change a habit or take action if others are relying on her, but only to a point. Once she hits Peak Obliger she's just as likely to throw her hands up and walk away in a burnt-out mess.) In this episode, Kelly and Brooke talk about their own habits and what tips and hacks have worked for them when changing or introducing a new one.
