Recovery from disordered eating doesn't end the moment bingeing stops — that's often where an entirely new phase begins. In this episode, Stef and Sarah unpack the often-overlooked “middle ground” of recovery — the stage where the chaos of bingeing has quieted, but true peace with food still feels out of reach. Stef describes this phase as a kind of emotional limbo: the urgency is gone, but now there's loneliness, uncertainty, and a disorienting sense of now what?. Sarah shares how she moved from bingeing to occasional overeating, and how easy it was to slip into black-and-white thinking without recognizing the real progress she'd already made. Together, they explore: what this “no man's land” actually looks and feels like why it's normal to struggle more with self-image once the bingeing stops the importance of community, language, and support during this time how to build trust in yourself before everything feels fully healed why this middle stage isn't failure — it's where real integration happens If you're past the acute phase but still don't feel “recovered,” this conversation will help you name where you are, trust the process, and move forward with more clarity (and less self-judgment). In this episode, I dive into a topic that hits home for many: how birthdays and special occasions become triggers for overeating and weight setbacks. If you've ever turned a birthday into a birthday week—or even a month—you're not alone. This cycle of restriction and indulgence is a big reason why lasting weight loss feels impossible. Here's what we unpack:Why birthdays often lead to prolonged periods of overeating and why this isn't just a lack of willpowerThe complicated love/hate relationship people have with overeating and how it fuels the cycleHow long-term dieting and restriction cause mental fatigue that sets you up for bingesWhy mindset shifts are more important than changing habits aloneReal talk about the challenges of breaking free from dieting mindsets without guilt or shamePractical insights to help you understand your relationship with food and stop the cycle for goodIf you're ready to stop using birthdays and holidays as excuses and start creating a sustainable, enjoyable relationship with food and your body, this episode is for you.Send me your question or feedback
Msg me "ACADEMY" for details on Your BINGE FREE Life AcademyIn this episode, I'm taking you behind the scenes of my personal journey to conquer binge eating and how I went from struggling with urges every single day to finally breaking free. Spoiler alert: it wasn't a quick fix, and it wasn't about trying harder or forcing myself to be motivated. It was about making a deep, long-term commitment to the process and finally getting the right support. In 2019, I sat on my parents' couch, fired up and ready to break free from the cycle of binge eating. I knew diets weren't the answer. Intermittent fasting? Not the answer. Tracking food? Not going to work for me. I knew the power of NOT giving into my urges, but it felt like I had no choice...So, I messaged a coach, fired up and ready as ever to stop binge eating, but something shifted. The next morning, I woke up feeling better, like maybe I didn't need that support after all. “Maybe I can do this on my own,” I thought. But that feeling didn't last (of course)... Another urge came, and before I knew it, the bingeing cycle continued. I realized: unless you rewire your brain, break free from those urges, and do the deep work, the cycle will just keep repeating. What I wanted was more than just less urges; I wanted them to be completely gone. I didn't want to live in fear of what would happen when I was alone with food or on vacation. I wanted peace around food, confidence in my choices, and to truly enjoy my life without constantly thinking about my next meal.It wasn't until I committed long-term to the process and sought out the right support that I began to see real transformation. Fear? Yeah, I had it. Doubt? Of course. But in those moments, having a mentor who had been through the same thing, someone who understood exactly what I was feeling, made all the difference.Today, I'm binge-free because:I got the right support.I leaned into the fear and doubt.I committed long-term.In this episode, I dive deep into what it really takes to break free from binge eating and why going all-in for the long term is the secret to truly conquering it for good. What if your cravings aren't about food at all?In this episode, I dive into how intuitive eating can truly change your relationship with food. I talk about why regulating your nervous system is key to letting go of cravings and emotional eating—not through willpower, but by creating a sense of safety in your body.I walk you through seven powerful steps to help you build a healthy, peaceful connection with food. One of the biggest shifts? Planning your meals not to restrict yourself, but to ease anxiety around food and take the pressure off.We also explore how restriction often backfires and how tuning into your body's natural signals can help you feel more in control, without guilt or shame. It's all about approaching food with compassion and trust. You'll hear practical tips and real talk about calming cravings, emotional eating, and how nervous system regulation plays a major role in all of it. When we stop seeing food as the enemy and start working with our body—not against it—weight loss and health happen more naturally.Topics Covered:Calming Cravings by Planning Meals and Regulating the Nervous SystemShifting From Protection Mode to Safety Mode for WellnessBreaking the Cycle of Restrict, Binge, Punish, PromiseThe Paradox of Food Deprivation and Increased CravingsFasting as a Healing Tool Beyond Weight LossRegulating Your Nervous System to Improve Eating HabitsIf you've ever felt like food has power over you, I hope this conversation brings you comfort and inspiration. You're not alone, and healing is possible. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right—eating well, exercising, pushing yourself—but your body just won't let go of fat, there's a reason.Your nervous system is either in Protection Mode (fight-or-flight) or Safety Mode (rest-and-digest)—and fat release only happens in Safety Mode. But if your body feels unsafe? It clings to fat, slows metabolism, and even triggers binge eating and self-sabotage.Think about it. You go through stress, and suddenly you're reaching for food you swore you wouldn't touch. You're not weak—it's biology. When your body is in survival mode, it's wired to conserve energy and seek quick fuel. That's why unwanted eating behaviors feel so out of control sometimes. But here's the kicker: fat loss isn't just about burning calories—it's about making your body feel safe enough to let go.So the real question is—are you pushing your body into Protection Mode without even realizing it? Because if you are, no amount of dieting or exercise is going to override survival mode. It's time to stop fighting your body and start working with it.So if you're ready to Break Free from Emotional and Binge Eating, download my FREE eBook: Calm the Craving: 7 Steps to Break the Emotional and Binge Eating Battle. In this guide, you'll learn how to regulate your nervous system to eliminate cravings, make peace with food, and allow the weight to naturally release itself.Download your free copy here: www.sherryshaban.com/calmYou deserve to experience food freedom, I can't wait to see you inside!Listen to more episodes at www.makepeacewithfood.com/podcast or subscribe to me on Spotify, iTunes, and YouTube so you never miss an episode!Join my Facebook Community here: www.myfoodfreedomlifestyle.comWork with me: www.sherryshaban.com/transformWant to go deeper? Every time I promised myself I'd quit bingeing, my first instinct was to trade carrot cake for carrot sticks and run so hard I'd practically slide off the treadmill. But no matter how dedicated I was to so-called “clean eating” and marathon gym sessions, the binges always came back. Here's what I missed back then: There are key things you can do—things that have nothing to do with counting carbs or surviving bootcamp—things that can markedly shift bingeing. Counterintuitive as this is, focusing away from restricting and working out often yields a desire to eat and move in ways that serve us—body, mind, and soul. In all, I'll been talking about 10 important pieces to understand, and this episode focuses on understanding how your bingeing makes sense. YES, you read that right! In today's episode, I sit down with Dr. Chuks to explore the deeply layered world of eating disorders - how they often begin, what fuels them, and why they can be so difficult to detect and treat. We talk about the connection between stress and disordered eating around major life events, the dangerous expectations placed on our bodies before weddings and holidays, and how social media and comparison can quietly chip away at our sense of self. I share some of my own experiences navigating anorexia, the crossover between restriction and bingeing, and the importance of recognising emotional triggers.Whether you're personally affected, supporting someone who is, or just curious to understand this often misunderstood illness a bit better—this conversation holds space for honesty, reflection, and healing.Find Dr Chuks:Book: https://amzn.eu/d/b1zIkj6Stay Connected with Hurt to Healing:Instagram: instagram.com/hurttohealingpodTikTok: tiktok.com/@hurttohealingpodLinkedIn: linkedin.com/company/hurt-to-healingSubstack: substack.com/@hurttohealingWebsite: hurttohealing.co.uk Hosted on Acast. If you're recovering from an eating disorder, you might well desire to eat all the foods that you have been depriving yourself of, as a rebellion against the restriction or dieting fatigue. You may have an all or nothing relationship with food. You're either being super-healthy and good, or chaotic and devouring everything in sight. Maybe you binge on ‘bad foods' that you would normally forbid yourself. In recovery, it's helpful to move towards permitting all these foods into your eating plan. This doesn't mean eating donuts for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Or throwing health goals out of the window. It's about embracing food neutrality and taking food off the pedestal of maximal pleasure. It's possible to achieve healthy eating (not orthorexic eating!), whilst honouring taste, satisfaction and pleasure. Understandably, you might not know where to start. This podcast episode will give your practical steps to make this possible. I hope that you find it helpful. In this thought-provoking Clinician's Corner episode, Clarissa Kennedy and Molly Painschab dive deep into the ever-popular term “self-sabotage” — and why they believe it's not only inaccurate but potentially harmful in the context of food addiction recovery. Together, they explore how behaviors often labeled as self-sabotage are actually maladaptive coping strategies, formed through years of survival. These are not signs of brokenness, but evidence of brilliance in navigating pain, trauma, and unmet needs. The duo discusses how using shame-based language like “chronic relapser” or “self-sabotage” can derail healing, and instead, offer curiosity, compassion, and nervous system awareness as more empowering alternatives. This episode is packed with insight, real client stories, and powerful reframes that will resonate with anyone navigating food addiction, emotional eating, or recovery setbacks. Key Takeaways: •

Welcome to Episode 31 of The Road to Carnivore Podcast! The Minnesota Starvation Experiment is one of the most stunning studies ever done, and shows us how restricted eating can cause deranged food behaviors like bingeing. This 15-minute episode discusses this 1940s study of healthy male subjects who started hoarding utensils, licking their plates and tableware, diluting and rehydrating their soup, and more. It is dieting, calorie restriction, or semi-starvation, that cause binge behavior in humans. We were so excited to welcome author and journalist Emma Specter to the show, that we asked them if we could talk about their favorite movie. Join us as we traverse journalism onscreen in James L. Brooks' 1987 film Broadcast News, starring Holly Hunter, William Hurt, and Albert Brooks. We also ask Emma about the process of writing her reported memoir, More, Please, and what she might say about elements of the movie "as a private citizen," versus in her official capacity as culture writer for Vogue.Discussed in this episode:More, Please: On Food, Fat, Bingeing, Longing, and the Lust for EnoughEmma's review of She Said: https://dirt.fyi/article/2022/12/all-the-things-she-saidFind Emma:emmaspecter.comtwitter.com/EmmaSpecterinstagram.com/specteremmaFind Kat:twitter.com/kat_ex_machinaletterboxd.com/katexmachinaFind AC:instagram.com/aclambertyletterboxd.com/aclambertyFind Us:Join our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsTwitterInstagramNEW: Letterboxd
