Today, we're thrilled to share a conversation with New York Times bestselling author and happiness expert Gretchen Rubin, where we explored one of her most practical and game-changing frameworks: the Four Tendencies.Gretchen explains that we all face two types of expectations—outer expectations, like a church calling or a request from a boss or family member, and inner expectations, like a personal goal or habit. She observed that people tend to respond to these expectations in one of four consistent ways. She defines these responses as the Upholder, the Questioner, the Obliger, and the Rebel.Gretchen believes that understanding this one aspect of your personality can bring surprising clarity to your habits, relationships, and responsibilities. In faith communities, expectations often come from many directions—God, leaders, our ward family, and ourselves. This framework offers a gentle way to understand why some people feel energized, while others quietly burn out.Gretchen shares clear, practical strategies for each tendency so you can work with your nature, not against it. Whether you're navigating a calling, serving a mission, experiencing doubt, or trying to build a consistent scripture study habit, she shows how to avoid burnout and follow through. We've been so excited to share this episode. Once you start seeing yourself and others through the lens of the Four Tendencies, things shift. You'll begin to understand why your spouse loves checklists, why your teen needs to do things their own way, or why it can be so hard to say no. Gretchen explains that these patterns aren't flaws—they're clues, blueprints that can help us make better choices, lower stress, and show up more fully in our lives. We hope it's as eye-opening for you as it was for us.If you want to go deeper into the Four Tendencies or explore more of Gretchen's work, you can check out her book The Four Tendencies or her other bestsellers The Happiness Project and Better than Before. She also hosts an award-winning podcast called Happier with Gretchen Rubin where she and her sister dive into practical ways to build habits, boost happiness, and live with more intention. Thanks again for listening.
This week, we're welcoming back someone who feels like part of the HerMoney podcast family: happiness expert and New York Times bestselling author Gretchen Rubin. Gretchen is back with Jean to tackle some of the trickiest, most taboo, and surprisingly relatable money dilemmas our listeners have shared, including: What to do when your bank suddenly shuts down your account with no explanation How to confidently ask your employer to sponsor you in a pageant (without sounding cringe) And how to professionally advocate for yourself when a colleague with less experience is making $20K more
Before Liz and Sarah dive into the episode, Liz shares the sad news of her dad’s recent death and thanks listeners for the outpouring of love and support. Then they talk about their Team Theme for 2026 and how they want it to relate to this year’s theme but also be more aggressive. They land on “Be the Bee,” and their symbol is the Killer Bee. In The Mailroom, they answer a layered question about whether or not too much pressure is put on new writers to deliver stellar spec pilot scripts. This week’s Hollywood Hack is to have multiples of certain items — including phone chargers, scissors, and reading glasses. Finally Liz recommends I Love LA on HBO Max. Paige, Jenny, and Cathy dive into Life in Five Senses by Gretchen Rubin, exploring how slowing down and tuning into everyday sensory experiences can deepen our connection to the world around us. The group reflects on what it means to truly notice life's small details — from familiar walks and neighborhood scents to unexpected sensory discoveries. Paige shares a funny story about confusing skunk and weed smells, while Cathy describes counting bunnies and exploring during her travels. Together, they discuss how this awareness can enrich both personal life and professional practice, especially in the field of visual impairment. They also chat about bringing sensory awareness into education, mindfulness, and daily routines — and how paying attention to what we see, hear, smell, taste, and touch can help us find joy in familiar places. Jenny, Paige, and Cathy close by reflecting on how each of them plans to slow down and savor the sensory world a little more. In honor of Halloween, they share their personal horror stories and discuss why it’s good to laugh at yourself. Then, in The Craft (& Fain), they explore what you want your sample script to show about your skills as a TV writer. This week’s Hollywood Hack is affordable and comfortable — H & M Wide-Leg Joggers. In this direct, practical conversation on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik explores how the four cardinal virtues—prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance—become a usable framework for real-world mental and spiritual well-being. Guest Matthew Jandernoa, founder of Steadfast Life, reframes virtue from “rules” into a map for becoming fully human. You'll hear why freedom requires formation, how appetites shape choice, and a simple on-ramp: identify your “champion virtue” using Gretchen Rubin's Four Tendencies to build momentum. Matthew shares a client story showing how the prudential sub-virtue of alertness can reduce panic attacks by widening focus and restoring creativity. If you want a clear, non-fluffy path to calm, confidence, and integrity, this episode lays out the steps. About the guest Matthew Jandernoa is a husband, father, and founder of Steadfast Life, a movement helping people make virtue human again—practiced daily by families, leaders, and believers seeking wisdom, discipline, and love. Key takeaways: Virtue is human tech: The root of “virtue” (from vir, “human”) frames it as a map for being fully human, not a moral checklist. Four domains, four anchors: Prudence = thinking well Temperance = desiring well Fortitude = meeting fear well Justice = acting/interacting well Freedom needs formation: Unordered appetites distort reality; rightly ordered appetites increase true freedom and durable happiness. Start where you're strong: Use Four Tendencies to find a “champion virtue”: Upholder → Temperance Questioner → Prudence Obliger → Justice Rebel → FortitudeGrowing one virtue lifts all. Anxiety tool: alertness (prudence): Replace tunnel vision with creative option-generation to neutralize intrusive thoughts and regulate the nervous system. Everyday practice: Choose honesty over comfort, courage over fear, balance over excess, and fairness over ego—small, repeatable acts compound. Resources mentioned: steadfastlife.net, Institute of Catholic Culture's course on the Four Cardinal Virtues, Gretchen Rubin's Four Tendencies. Recently Liz and Sarah discussed how the rubber was meeting the road on their Netflix pilot. They were sure they were done with the notes process and were now awaiting some kind of yay or nay on the project. But they were wrong! They’re getting more notes, a reminder that predicting the future in Hollywood is impossible. In Take A Hike, Sarah talks about how making a meal from her garden made her realize it’s important to celebrate steps along the way. Next they answer a Mailroom Question from a listener who does NOT enjoy being inundated by Substack newsletters. This week’s Hollywood Hack will improve your pictures — use the Clean Up feature in Apple photos. Finally, Sarah recommends An Everlasting Meal: Cooking with Economy and Grace by Tamar Adler. If your closets are organized but your brain feels like the junk drawer, this episode is for you. October is here — which means pumpkins, costumes, candy corn, and… mental clutter. Before the holiday rush even begins, most of us are already overwhelmed by the to-dos swirling in our heads. From buying candy for trick-or-treaters to planning holiday travel, our minds can feel just as cluttered as our countertops. The American Psychological Association reports that 70% of adults feel stressed about the holidays before they even begin. Add in the fact that we make 35,000 decisions a day, and it's no wonder we're exhausted before dinner. But here's the good news: you don't have to carry it all. Clearing mental clutter is possible, and today I'm walking you through how to do it — Fresh Start Method® style. In this episode, you'll learn: Why “decision fatigue” is real and how to recognize it. The surprising number of pounds of candy corn made every year (hint: it's in the millions!). Relatable client stories about late-night worry spirals and brain overload. What other voices — from Gretchen Rubin to The Minimalists to Martha Stewart — say about order, clutter, and peace of mind. My 5-step Fresh Start approach to clearing mental clutter before the holidays: brain dump, sort and prioritize, create non-negotiables, let go of perfection, and build small systems that stick. Powerful quotes and questions to help you stop chasing “perfect” and start choosing peace. By the end of this episode, you'll not only have permission to let go of what doesn't serve you — you'll also have practical steps to clear your head and actually enjoy the season ahead. ✨ Don't forget: The October Challenge Calendar is still available! It's a free download packed with simple daily prompts to keep both physical and mental clutter under control this month. Print it, post it where you'll see it, and check it off little by little. ➡️ [Download your October Challenge Calendar here] Support the showConnect with Diana:Business email: Diana@dsdeclutrr.comOur Instagram: @dsdeclutrrOur Facebook: @dsdeclutrrOur Websites: dsdeclutrr.com
Liz and Sarah talk about how they approach constructing pitch decks — finding the perfect photo is Sarah’s superpower! In Take A Hike, they discuss why it’s so important to take the time to meet people in person. Not only is it fun, it makes working together so much easier. Then they share moments of Disproportionate Joy from listeners and share a couple of their own. This week’s Hollywood Hack helps transform a non-work space into a workspace for all of you floor-sitters: a foldable coffee table. Liz and Sarah are waiting for a reaction to the latest draft of their Netflix pilot, and this is when the rubber hits the road. Either something good will happen… or the project will be dead. Wish them luck! In Take A Hike, Sarah shares Finch, a self-care app that’s been making her (and Violet) happier. Who doesn’t love to tend a virtual pet “birb?” Then in The Craft (& Fain), they discuss one of their favorite subjects — giving and getting notes. Remember— listen and be gentle! This week’s Hollywood Hack has transformed Sarah’s gardening experience: the GreenStalk Virtual Planter. Finally Liz recommends the memoir Actress of a Certain Age by Jeff Hiller. At first, I thought I was doing great with college drop-off (I even bragged to my girlfriends about making it two whole days without tears.) But the adrenaline has started to wear off. Suddenly, weekends feel hollow without our family's Sunday routine. Turns out it's not just the drop-off that's tough, it's the days after when the quiet gets louder. That's why Penn and I are so grateful to sit down with New York Times bestselling author, podcaster, and speaker Gretchen Rubin, one of my favorite voices on happiness and habits this week. Gretchen says this season isn't an “empty nest,” it's an open door—a time of possibility, connection, and, yes, some grief mixed with growth. We talk about how to cope when the wine and cake aren't cutting it, how to replace old family traditions with new ones, and why weekends can feel especially heavy. Gretchen also gives us permission to create new rituals, like her idea of a buffercation—a post-drop-off trip that softens the blow.We also dive into parenting identities, the joy (and limits) of constant kid updates, and why sometimes one parent has to cry while the other holds it together. It's heartfelt, it's hopeful, and yes, there are squirrel picnic tables involved. So if you're in the stage of life where the house feels too quiet, this episode might just help you reframe it—not as an ending, but as an open door to what's next. The word is EVERYWHERE. Happiness. I don't even always believe that it's a worthy goal honestly, but that might be a matter of semantics. How you define happiness defines how you approach it. This is a careful conversation with Gretchen Rubin that's based on what research and experience tell us makes a life that feels pretty satisfying most of the time. Gretchen wrote The Happiness Project 15 years back and has been playing with the tenets and practices ever since on her podcast Happier. Thought-provoking Quotes: “Let the top rung of the ladder be your sincere convictions. That's the one to keep sturdy, clear, and visible, and hold that one as tight as you can.” – Jen Hatmaker “Anchor your feet into the ground and stand in this storm. Let it rage. Weather it, weather your own discomfort, weather everybody else's discomfort and whatever loss or change comes along with it, because it will end, and there will come a day when it is not that chaotic and what you will be left with is your integrity and that is enough.” – Jen Hatmaker “Women are capable of getting through the hardest things. Maybe it's a trope because it's true. Maybe the women who are betrayed grieve and recover and rebuild because that's what women do. So maybe it's not such a surprise that we can flourish.” – Amy Hardin “I'm just convinced, this is the time for us to reinvent. Look how awesome we are.” – Jen Hatmaker Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce engagement post - https://www.instagram.com/p/DN02niAXMM-/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MTQ4YWwzOGcycWJlcA== [ENCORE] When the Truth Goes Viral: The Cost (and Benefit) of Living Honestly with Jonathan Merritt - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-64/encore-when-the-truth-goes-viral-the-cost-and-benefit-of-living-honestly-with-jonathan-merritt/ Awake: A Memoir by Jen Hatmaker - https://amzn.to/3VnMb0k The Interview: Jen Hatmaker's Life Exploded in Middle Age.
