Have you ever tried to achieve a money goal and felt like you never made any progress? Or do you walk around feeling completely uneasy about your money situation? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you are not alone. You see, money is about more than numbers. It's about our very complex relationship with money that was set in motion even before we were born, believe it or not. As our much-beloved guest, Ken Honda, says, “It's like you have a mold in you that attracts a certain relationship with money until you recognize it and start to make changes, nothing else will change.” Ken is a money and happiness expert and a best-selling self-development author in Japan. His book “Happy Money” is one that will forever be on my bookshelf, and if you haven't read it, now is the time. In this vault episode, Ken shares how to figure out what is enough for you so you aren't sucked into believing that more is better, how to redefine your relationship with money so you can bring in some ease, and how to do the work to let go of your money fears for good. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, ButcherBox, and Pique Life. Our minds are incredibly powerful, and we know our mindset and thoughts can influence our health, manifestations, and actions. But when we face challenges or engage in repetitive patterns, it's difficult to know the steps we need to take to liberate ourselves from negative thoughts or tendencies. Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with biologist and world-renowned author Bruce Lipton. Bruce shows us how our minds are like computers and discusses how most of our programming comes from watching our environment before the age of seven and can often include self-sabotaging behaviors. Bruce shares tips on how we can become aware of our dysfunctional programming and empower ourselves to manifest the life we intentionally want to create. He also breaks down the difference between the subconscious mind, which allows us to function on autopilot, and the conscious mind, which involves thinking with intention and purpose. Bruce deep dives into the science behind action versus reaction, how it impacts our health, and the steps we can take to prevent illness and promote longevity. Bruce Lipton is a stem cell biologist and best selling author. His research challenges the traditional view that genes determine our biological destiny and suggests that our perceptions and experiences play a crucial role in shaping our health. In this episode, Dhru and Bruce dive into (audio version / Apple Subscriber version):95% of our life comes from programming outside of our own (3:20 / 3:20)Where we get our programming from and how it is similar to being under hypnosis (10:00 /10:00) Why 60% of the programs we have downloaded for our mind are dysfunctional (20:06 / 17:35)How we actively created our problems and what we can do to fix them (21:56 / 18:49)How we spend most of our time reacting rather than intentionally acting (34:12 / 29:00)90% of illness is from stress (37:41 / 32:00)Function of the mind: Making coherence between beliefs and reality (56:04 / 51:22)Belief in the inevitability of aging (1:00:20 / 55:53) The programming that Bruce came into and how he deprogrammed his mind (1:09:29 / 1:05:11) Three avenues to reprogram your mind (1:16:22 /1:11:56)Also mentioned in this episode:Calm AppDivision of Perceptual StudiesAccess more than 3,000 specialty lab tests with Rupa Health. How do you donate money wisely? I definitely love giving more than receiving…in fact, I'm a terrible gift receiver. Giving effectively isn't always easy. Our guest, Grace Nicolette, co-host of the Giving Done Right Podcast and Vice President of Programming and External Relations at the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP), is here to help you figure out how to give effectively whether it's now at the end of the year or whether you want to create a giving plan for next year. Today's episode #51 features me on Craig Lane's Health Alkemy channel. During our time together we chat about a range of subjects including how we as a culture define health (spoiler alert: it's a low bar), cultivating presence and mindfulness, nutrition, vices and much more. Before we go there, I give thanks to a reviewer and do a mini rant on Haaaaavard's ridiculous latest “study.” The thanks goes to Michael Sisley of North Carolina who was kind enough to purchase a number of copies of The Nourishment Mindset including a handful to give to his counseling clients struggling with nutrition and disordered eating. I'm always honored by people buying my book, and the fact that he is using it in his practice is tremendously touching to me.My rant would be funny if it were a joke, but it isn't. Harvard's T.H. Chan School of “Public Health” has decried red meat once again, this time asserting that it causes Type 2 Diabetes. And getting plenty of mainstream press and praise for their valiant efforts to demonize The. Most. Nutrient. Dense. Food. On. The. Planet. Bravo, y'all! Way to go — let's double or triple down on the idiocy! We've been eating red meat for well, forever. And Type 2 Diabetes (which used to be called adult onset but now kids have it so that term no longer works) has only been on the increase relatively recently. Even my lazy dog, Travis the Newf knows this is junk science and walked out of the room when I was discussing it. Let's see, we'll blend an inaccurate dietary recall study with a truckload of confounding variables and conflicts of interest (the head honcho there is a vegetarian). In the last forty years, red meat consumption has gone DOWN significantly and sadly while Type 2 Diabetes has sky rocketed. Read this post by the always fabulous science journalist, Nina Teicholz for more! I need not expand because she already has and in brilliant fashion as usual. And this one by Diana Rodgers on “Four Reasons Red Meat Doesn't Cause Diabetes.”Harvard's School of Public Health is like the American Heart Association when it comes to nutrition. I tell clients to run in the other direction when they see AHA's “Heart Healthy” labels on all the cereals and grain-based products and toxic seed oils. Ditto for this “science.” Now I'm laughing as I'm reminded that there is no more science because I certain human proclaimed himself “the science.” Glad we got all that cleared up!Ok, moving on to something useful: I'll now be including real whole food recipes in each post. This first one, Dixie's Cheeseburger Casserole, is dedicated to Harvard and the AHA because when I make it, I use TWO pounds of Butcher Box ground beef! All y'all need to do to have dinner on the table stat (30 minutes) is to brown some beef, and while doing so cut up whatever veggies you have (my faves are bell peppers, onions and zucchini) and olives if you dig ‘em. Then place the veggies on the bottom of a baking dish, pour the meat and its fat on top, and finally, top with plenty of glorious cheese. Toss it in a 375-400ish degree oven for 20 minutes and voilà! You can get all fancy and top with sour cream and fresh herbs and avocado (not pictured) if you like. Then as the French say… attack! In closing, if you're looking for an easy and nutritious holiday gift, let me help you: simply send me your recipient list and I'll sign and complimentary ship copies of The Nourishment Mindset.THE LINKShttps://amzn.to/3kDN85zhttps://healthalkemy.comhttps://unsettledscience.substack.com/p/harvard-has-been-anti-meat-for-30https://sustainabledish.com/four-reasons-why-red-meat-doesnt-cause-type-2-diabetes/?inf_contact_key=40486dd99a3285eafaf3521a1656867d680f8914173f9191b1c0223e68310bb1 This is a public episode. Let me share a little secret with you - I have a date every week. But this rendezvous doesn't involve candlelight dinners or dressed-up evenings; instead, it involves my money. I'm wrapping up our series on avoiding burnout, which happens when we are driving and out of alignment. My catalyst for the series was Dr Neha Sangwan who was juggling 18 critically ill patients per day and barely surviving 36-hour shifts fueled by sugar and caffeine in her early 30s. She did it…till she couldn't. And she realized something had to give. She used her scientific background to climb back out and her new book is Powered by Me: From Burned out to Fully Charged at Work and in Life. I then brought on Heather Monahan. We did a series just a couple months ago on Confidence Heather is a two times best-selling author, first with her book Confidence Creator, and now with her latest book, Overcome Your Villains: Mastering Your Beliefs, Actions, and Knowledge to Conquer Any Adversity. Heather is the host of the Creating Confidence podcast and she knows burnout from many years in the high levels of corporate America. But burnout can happen for anyone, anywhere, at any time, if you are not being authentic to you, and wreck your drive. We continue our series on Avoiding Burnout and my catalyst for the series was Dr Neha Sangwan, a doctor who did just that, burnt out. Her new book is called Powered by Me: From Burned out to Fully Charged at Work and in Life I just saw Neha on the Today show alongside Mel Robbins and saw she's going to be on Mel's show, she was just on Gabby Reece's show as well as Dr Mark Hyman and she's hit a nerve with her insight. In this episode I brought on another expert on burnout, Heather Monahan. Heather did a series with me on Confidence just a couple months ago that I urge you to check out. Heath is a two times best-selling author, first with her book Confidence Creator, and now with her latest book, Overcome Your Villains: Mastering Your Beliefs, Actions, and Knowledge to Conquer Any Adversity. You can find that on Amazon. Heather is the host of the Creating Confidence podcast which you'll generally find in the top 200 podcast overall in Apple Podcasts and I encourage you to search for and subscribe to right now. Have you ever wondered why we eat turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and our favorite veggie dish for Thanksgiving? The Thanksgiving meal has evolved so much since the early 1900s and become the holiday we associate with eating until we can't eat anymore. In this reboot Friendsgiving episode, I sat down with the amazing Katherine Spiers, host of the Smart Mouth Podcast, to find out the history behind the Thanksgiving meal and get to the bottom of our pumpkin-crazed eating trends. Katherine shares how Thanksgiving has evolved over time, how to make the most out of your Thanksgiving on any budget, and the fascinating story behind the year of two Thanksgivings. Open, open, open! You may be too young to remember, but a clothing store named Mervyn's back in the early '90s had some great commercials with people camped out by their store just waiting for them to open for the big Black Friday sales day. Now, if you're like me, you probably don't go to the store that often on Black Friday. I'd much rather online shop, that is, until I heard what our guest Trae Bodge, our resident shopping expert, had to say about the hefty return fees retailers are now charging. Whether you're planning to shop online or brave the crowds to score a deal in-store, Trae's sharing all the tips you need to know, including Trae's Black Friday shopping rules to get the best buys, her favorite shopping browser extensions to save money like PayPal Honey, my personal fav, and most importantly, how to stay on budget and not go into debt during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. You always love Trae's Black Friday episodes, and this is our third year having her on the show. I learn something new each time myself and this episode is no exception. So while you're stuffing yourself on Thanksgiving, shoot this episode out to 5 of your friends or share it on your socials so everyone can shop smart this week. We are taking on the very real and present danger of…burnout. Something that happens when your drive is out of alignment. What you want and why is not resonating. My expert is Dr Neha Sangwan who comes from her own story as a doctor juggling 18 critically ill patients per day and barely surviving 36-hour shifts fueled by sugar and caffeine in her early 30s. She did it…till she couldn't. And she realized something had to give. She used her scientific background to jumpstart her journey of renewal and catalyze her mission to heal humanity. And that is what happens. We keep going and keep doing…until we can't. That is the risk. If you are on the path to burnout, there will be an end. So we're here to help you avoid this. This is our Peak Wellness show where we give specific focus to our health and wellness. The vehicle that drives all we do. In this episode, we're talking about snacking at night. Specifically with ice cream. I have on the show, Sean Folkson, the founder of Nightfood, a better, healthier, and more sleep friendly ice cream. I'm not advocating eating ice cream late at night, but as you'll hear in the show, the concept is, if you're going to anyway, at least make it a better option. Randy and I often talk about all of us being creatures of our appetites, and we won't squelch that. Trying to leads to failure. But let's upgrade our appetites. That's why I have Sean on the show and he simply felt like if he was going to indulge anyway, could he make it less harmful? More than ice cream we simply discuss the realities of our own humanity and our efforts to make better decisions, even if it's a less offensive ice cream than Ben & Jerry's or Haagen Daz. I generally try not to eat after dinner, but if I do, I strive for the healthiest thing I can to appease my appetite. I think you'll find some comfort in this show...about comfort food. We're seeking health, we're not seeking to deprive ourselves of every pleasure! Find Sean and his tasty treats at nightfood.com Go to Zocdoc.com/KEVIN and download the Zocdoc app for FREE. In this episode, we're talking about Dave Ramsey's terrible retirement advice. Let me put myself in your shoes. No matter how old you are, you're probably saving for retirement. You're trying to figure out how much you need to save and what retirement accounts are best - do you go 401K or Roth IRA, etc? And the biggest question is, how much money can you take out each year for retirement? And, you're hoping, fingers crossed, you're saving enough. Then, the biggest voice in money, Dave Ramsey, comes along and says it's simple, if you earn 12% each year in your investments, you can safely take out 8% for retirement each year and leave 4% in your account for inflation. Simple, according to his “math.” But it's not that simple, and it's mathematically wrong advice - damaging advice if you ask me. Why? Because of pure facts, the stock market's average 30-year return is 9.9% and just 7.3% adjusted for inflation - far less than the 12% return he spouts. His latest rant in response to a caller who wanted to know how much he could take out for retirement each year is the reason for this episode. I called in my two money expert friends, Paula Pant from Afford Anything and Joe Saul-Sehy from Stacking Benjamins, to talk through why this advice is wrong, what moral obligation money experts have to their listeners to get things right, and what you need to know to figure out how much money you should be saving and what a good retirement withdrawal rate really is. I'm joined by another self-help guide and curator and I bring him to you because I wanted to dig into his interest in personal development and why he's making such a huge effort to influence the culture with it, and doing it in a big way, I might add. And I want you to hear another angle on helping you take all the info and actually applying it to your life. My guest is Lee Rankinen, who is the Co-Founder (along with Justin Malik) and producer of the Optimal Living Daily podcast network. Justin earned his MBA at Pepperdine University in 2010, where he met Justin Malik, and both eventually launched a six-figure app business. After feeling unfulfilled with the app business, Justin & Lee launched Optimal Living Daily to spread motivational & inspirational messages, which has garnered over 400M downloads since launching in December 2015. For context I'm at just about 65 million downloads in the same amount of time. If you like this podcast, you will absolutely want to check out the Optimal Living Daily podcasts, which are bite size messages of hope, inspiration, and equipping. 55: Things I Wish I Would Have Known 30 Years Ago, but I know them now! Episode 4: Taking better care of my teeth can lower my risk of cancer. And according to Dr. Kelly Blodgett, that doesn't only mean brushing or flossing. He explained in our podcast that high-quality saliva leads to a healthier body. How do I improve the quality of my saliva? Find ten to fifteen minutes per day of peace. How does this help your oral health? When you start to relax, your blood flow is better all over your body, including your mouth. When the blood flow is good to your mouth, your saliva improves, which will then impact your gut health. When your gut health is better, YOUR HEALTH IMPROVES! I encourage you to listen to our episode, Can Root Canals Contribute to Cancer Risk? Cut back on sugar and alcohol. Don't drink super-hot beverages (darn it! I wrap up our series on Human Design with my Big Idea, Big Takeaway & Big Action. Human design is another take on personality profiles. Think of Myers Briggs, DISC, or the Enneagram. The purpose of these is to understand your natural propensities and predispositions, so you can better understand and leverage yourself and others. I'll speak more to the benefit in a moment. The difference with Human Design is all the others are self reporting, while Human Design is based on your birth date, time and location. That's it. Yes, this is the concept of astrology and according to my good, Christian upbringing is blasphemy. I'm doing a series on it because one, I found the results for me to be incredibly revealing and useful, and two, I don't see any problem in the concept being designed by God. Drive with me a moment and let me unpack my experience and thoughts, so you may consider utilizing this tool for your own benefit. This episode is your ultimate guide to afford the holidays without all the stress and debt that can come with it. With that said, I get that it is hard to do. The holidays always feel like a time when you are expected to spend money, even when you might not have money to spend. Maybe you have a family member who is always trying to one-up your gifts, or you feel pressured to have the best gift for your boss. And what about Dad's? I never knew a good gift to get my dad, so I always overspent when I could've just got him a new t-shirt, and he would've loved that. So, I called in my new friend, Pattie Ehsaei. If you don't know Pattie, she is known as the Duchess of Decorum on TikTok and has a raving fan base. She teaches financial literacy and social and workplace decorum. For the last 22 years, she's had a multifaceted career as a lawyer and manager in financial services and currently stands as Senior Vice President of Mergers and Acquisitions Lending. In this episode, Pattie shares her best tips to afford the holidays, why she thinks regifting is socially acceptable(I didn't even know that was a thing), and how to DIY your holiday decorations and gifts in style. We kick off a series on Human Design. I first experienced it like a personality profile, which I've grown up taking, from Myers Briggs, to the Disc profile, to most recently the Enneagram. I greatly appreciate them all in regards to getting insight into my personality predispositions and propensities. But I've always struggled with the aspect that they are self-reporting. We choose the answers and I struggle to answer naturally. The Human Design concept however, simply goes off your birthdate, birth time, and city of birth. I read a review that said it's like astrology on steroids. I was raised in the bible belt. I grew up in church. Astrology was blasphemy. But here is the deal. I had a Human Design Blueprint done, and the profile I got back addressed issues about me that nothing else has every uncovered. So regardless of my skepticism, I just can't deny it. So with me today is Erin Claire Jones. Erin is an expert in Human Design and one of the most well known leaders in the space. She looks at how human design reveals our energetic blueprint and specifically, how it looks at how people are designed to cultivate relationships, parent, make decisions, build businesses, market, communicate, work within teams and so much more. Erin's intent is to give people permission and tools to be themselves as individuals, in family, in business and in relationships. I had a meeting with Erin weeks ago just to connect with her and admit this was a new world for me, and I just immediately was attracted to her spirit and relatability and grace for my pondering. Today's vault Ask Shannah question comes from Laquesha: "Hi Shannah. Thanks so much for answering my question. I really want to start investing but I keep getting hung up on all the chatter out there. I can't figure out if I'm supposed to wait to start investing until I've paid off all my debt, or is that not smart to do? Also, it just feels like I need to be an expert at investing to do it well. I know that's not true, but man, it just feels so hard to figure out investing. I know so many people are making a killing, and I kinda feel bad that I haven't started at all, know what I mean. You've done so many great investing episodes, I'm curious if there's an episode from the past that you think I should check out. You're awesome and I so appreciate this show for motivating me. My boyfriend can't believe I care this much about my money, but I just tell him, yes, yes I do and so should you. Ok, thanks again." This is our Peak Wellness show where we give specific focus to our health and wellness. The vehicle that drives all we do. In this episode…we address how to run. Specifically, how to run without injury and keep running into old age. We're advocating running simply because it's one of the easiest exercises that can be done nearly anywhere and anytime with little to no equipment required. So many people who would run however, do not. Even those who used to at an elite level. The reason? Aches and pains. We've gotten to where it's the norm to stop running earlier in life and try to find an exercise with less impact. I had that as my own story. I did a 2 hour run on Father's Day about xis years ago. It was glorious. Except for the pain in my hip and back. Then my co host Dr Randy James and I got a hold of some new information. Today we both run pain free. It's not a guarantee for you, but it sure is a great hope and opportunity for all those who would like to continue, or start running. It's National Let's Talk Money Day, and it's also my 10-year wedding anniversary today, but let's focus on the money part. Talkin' money is what we do every week here on the show, so I'm excited that there's actually a day dedicated to my mission of making talking about money mainstream. There are lots of different topics we could talk about on Let's Talk Money Day, but if I had to pick one topic that I think is critical to your money success, it would be getting paid for your value. That is something our guest Anne Mahlum, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, business owner, and philanthropist, knows something about. Raised in a working-class family, there was very little in Anne's childhood that would indicate she would one day be one of the most successful founders in the fitness industry. A true self-made success story, Anne's entrepreneurial ventures have resulted in a personal net worth of over $100M and an impact on thousands of lives. In her new podcast, "How to…with Anne Mahlum", she has been interviewing top business minds and influential people and digging into how their success strategies can be adopted by others. But on this Let's Talk Money Day, Anne wants to equip you with the how-to's behind getting paid for your value. We talk about how to adopt a money action plan, how to figure out what monetary value you bring in your career to get paid more, and why we should all stop demonizing money. In this episode… I wrap up our series on mindset, specifically looking at what a growth mindset really is and the understanding that most of us are in fact not walking out a growth mindset, but are stuck in performance. This is our The Big Idea, The Big Takeaway & The Big Action episode to distill it all down. I kicked off by talking with Stanford-trained mindset expert Eduardo Briceño, the author of The Performance Paradox: Turning The Power of Mindset Into Action. It's Eduardo's research on how we miss the growth mindset that was my catalyst. He is also co-founder of Mindset Works with renowned Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck. I then brought on Tom Ziglar, son of famed growth mindset expert Zig Ziglar, and CEO of Ziglar. Ziglar as a company is one of the most premier growth oriented companies in existence. From these talks I'm made greatly aware of how I too get stuck in performance and am not actually growing. So in reviewing all the notes for the actions I want to take toward growth, I came up with the key points, and I want to share them with you. We kick off a series on mindset, and specifically, a growth mindset. We'll define it, but I think most of you are aware of a growth mindset vs a fixed mindset. And we all probably think we understand and have a growth mindset. And yet what you're about to hear is how we often sabotage our intent to be growth minded and lose the benefit. You're going to have your eyes opened, and be able to make immediate shifts that will give you the benefits you desire. My expert on the topic is Stanford-trained mindset expert Eduardo Briceño. Eduardo is the author of The Performance Paradox: Turning The Power of Mindset Into Action. He is co-founder of Mindset Works with renowned Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck. This concerns me a bit as I've eaten around 40% of my total intake for almost 2 decades now. Can we please get your thoughts on this?
