Some stories don't fit neatly into a redemption arc. Melvin Cole's is one of them.On the latest episode of Drive By with Sam Coates, Cole, founder of PURE Academy in Memphis, shares a raw, unpolished account of growing up in extreme poverty, entering the drug trade at age 11, surviving gun violence and ultimately choosing a radically different path. Raised by a heroin-addicted grandmother in South Memphis, Cole lost his sister as a toddler due to a medical misdiagnosis, experienced childhood sexual abuse and became a father at just 14. Survival wasn't a philosophy: it was daily reality.Football once offered a way out. Cole earned a college scholarship and had NFL aspirations, until a drug deal gone wrong left him shot in the head and back. What followed was prison, where witnessing a brutal assault became a spiritual breaking point. In a moment of desperation, Cole made a promise: if he survived, he would dedicate his life to saving young men headed down the same road. When he was released after serving time for cocaine trafficking, Cole dug up more than $500,000 he had buried during his time dealing drugs, money he once saw as a retirement plan. Instead of returning to the streets, he used it to build PURE Academy, a year-round boarding school for at-risk Black boys in Memphis that focuses on discipline, structure, emotional intelligence, agriculture, academics and faith.Today, PURE Academy serves 61 students on full scholarship, operates on a $3.7 million budget and boasts an 83% college matriculation rate. Cole is candid about the challenges that remain — the temptation of his former life, frustrations with nonprofit systems and the emotional toll of leadership. But his mission is clear: remove boys from environments that trap them in cycles of poverty and give them the tools to build something better. This episode isn't polished inspiration. It's an honest conversation about trauma, responsibility, faith and what it actually takes to change outcomes: not just for individuals, but for communities.Episode Highlights“I Started Selling Drugs at 11 — Not to Rebel, But to Survive”Cole explains how poverty and fatherhood at 14 pushed him into the drug trade as a calculated business decision, not teenage rebellion. The Moment Prison Changed EverythingWitnessing a violent assault behind bars led to a desperate prayer and a life-altering promise that would shape PURE Academy's mission.Burying $500K — Then Digging It Up for a SchoolThe drug money Cole once viewed as his future became the seed funding for a boarding school instead of a return to crime.Inside PURE Academy's Daily DisciplineFrom 6 a.m. workouts and meditation to academics and agriculture, Cole breaks down how structure, not charity, changes lives.“You Feed One of Two Wolves”Cole speaks openly about the ongoing internal battle between his past and present, including why success doesn't erase temptation — but purpose keeps him grounded.

We are inching closer and closer to the culmination of the college football season and this week gives us the next step on that journey. The College Football Playoff Semifinals. One of the star quarterbacks in the playoff is fighting to get a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA. Ross Dellenger explains this story and how there is a chance Trinidad Chambliss is back at Ole Miss next season. Then Ross, Andy Staples and Steven Godfrey discuss Chambliss' effect on the Rebel's this season. They breakdown the semifinal matchup against Miami by discussing who has the advantage and what each team needs to do to move on to the Natty. Then, they move over to the other semifinal. This is a rematch from earlier in the year as Oregon takes on Indiana. Indiana got the best of Oregon in Eugene, but the guys talk about how this is a much different Oregon team than it was in the first matchup. They discuss if Oregon will be able to get the best of this dominant Indiana team or if the Hoosiers will claim their spot in the championship game. Plus, they look at how the Big Ten conference was not given enough credit for the strength of its teams this year. Later, Ross reports about the college football calendar changing yet again. No more spring ball? Discussions are being had about changes to the early signing period, games in Week 0, CFP dates, the dates of the portal and spring and summer access periods. Ross, Andy and Godfrey discuss the benefits of changing all of these and what changes should happen to improve the college football calendar.Get ready for the CFP Semifinals with College Football Enquirer.0:00:00 - Trinidad Chambliss petitions for 6th year15:21 - Miami vs. Ole Miss CFP Semifinal28:07 - Oregon vs. Indiana CFP Semifinal48:13 - Fixing the college football calendar Subscribe to the College Football Enquirer on your favorite podcast app:

David Belden was born into a family of Oxford Group leaders and committed activists. The Group set out “to change the world” and throughout his early years David devoted himself wholeheartedly to this challenge. But while “carrying the message” in Africa, his life took an unexpected turn that led to his questioning some of principles and practices he had once taken uncritically for granted.David returned to Oxford University to write his doctoral dissertation on the Group's history, influence and shortcomings. He recently published a still more intimate account of his own journey toward personal and social transformation and change: The World Remakers' Child. This series affords a rare insider's view of the Group responsible for contributing no fewer than ten of A.A.'s Twelve Steps and yields fresh insights and challenges throughout. Mahatma Gandhi's grandson praised David's book for its “steady candor,” “humor about himself,” and “a thirst for a less harsh, more loving, and fairer world.”The first episode briefly introduces David's story to listeners after which he and Fr. Bill explore the life of Oxford Group founder Frank Buchman. New year, new weekend, and we're off in an unconventional direction. The big match of the coming days for our purposes is in Paris, but it ain't PSG. RED STAR PARIS travel to face TROYES on Saturday for a meeting of second against first in France's Ligue 2.It's a perfect opportunity to have a look at one of the world's more storied — if off-beat — football clubs. Red Star was founded way back in 1897 by Jules Rimet, eventual inventor of the FIFA World Cup, and in the time since it's acquired layer upon layer of identity. It's the French capital's rebel club, a vessel of alt-Paris, a different kind of chic from the glitz of the European champions at the Parc des Princes.Simon Binns is a veteran journalist who wrote a book on Red Star — and fell in love with the club along the way. Red Star Paris: Punks, Politics and Power Struggles in the Fight for the Coolest Club on Earth is a history, a social study, and a love letter, though Binns also made use of his background as a financial journo to tackle the issue of Red Star's new owners: 777 Partners, most famous for a failed takeover attempt of Everton Football Club. You can follow Simon on Twitter and Instagram, and get more sharp coverage of the world's game at TheFootballWeekend.com ↗️ Hosted on Acast. "I think there are a lot of athletes out there that are just so scared to show who they truly are and what they like because of their teammates and their coaches. And they're trying to get to the next level, and they're like, 'Oh well, if I like this then I'm not gonna get to the next level.' It's actually the opposite. You're probably gonna play better if you show who you truly are, because you're more free." Everyone loves Jackson Olson. The Savannah Bananas infielder is on a mission to make baseball more fun — and he's doing just that. Jackson has made a name for himself playing Banana Ball, which is like the baseball version of the Harlem Globetrotters. The exhibition-style games include full-on performances with choreography, lip syncing, and walk-ups designed to delight the sold-out stadium crowds. In this conversation, Jackson talks about his road to the Bananas, and his road to becoming a runner. This fall, Jackson ran his first race — the Disney Wine & Dine 5K — and now he's training for a 10K in January while figuring out how running fits into his busy baseball season. In this episode of Unblocked, I sit down with Jena Lorén, also known as The Consciousness Architect, for a powerful conversation about ego, alignment, and identity shifts.Jena shares her personal journey through trauma, survival patterns, and major life transitions, and how those experiences shaped the work she does today. We talk about how ego forms as a protective mechanism, how it quietly runs our decisions, and why so many ambitious women feel successful on the outside but misaligned on the inside. We explore the four Egoic Archetypes, the Realist, Rebel, Martyr, and Illusionist, and how learning to pause, reflect, and respond instead of react can create real freedom.
