Animal cruelty is equal parts disturbing, gross, and downright maddening — and tonight's story is a bizarre saga in Ontario's horse world. Stephanie Redlick is a North York/Toronto-area resident who is reportedly connected to Above the Stars Equine Rescue, and a figure many in the equine community have been warning about for months. Redlick has been charged with 13 offences under Ontario's Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act, and police have also laid criminal charges alleging fraud and theft connected to a livestock matter. There are serious claims being made by critics and horse advocates — allegations that horses under Redlick's stewardship have been kept in appalling conditions, with suffering and death as the outcome. So, how can someone facing such serious allegations still be in a position to acquire more animals? In this scenario, Rebel News journalists often reach out to a party to get their side of the story. Before I interviewed John, or his co-author Jason Norman, I emailed them to let them know that the purpose of my interview was not to re-try the incident of March 30, 1981, nor was this a podcast with a political agenda. The most common modalities include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP), and high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC). These therapies aim to improve oxygenation, reduce the work of breathing, and potentially prevent invasive mechanical ventilation. 💨 CPAP and BiPAP CPAP delivers a single, continuous pressure during inspiration and expiration. This pressure (commonly 5–10 cm H₂O) helps recruit atelectatic alveoli, reduce shunt, and improve oxygenation. It is commonly used for conditions like pulmonary edema, obstructive sleep apnea, or mild hypoxemia without significant ventilatory failure.BiPAP alternates between two pressures:Inspiratory positive airway pressure (IPAP), augments tidal volume and unloads inspiratory muscles.Expiratory positive airway pressure (EPAP), maintains alveolar recruitment and improves oxygenation.The differential between IPAP and EPAP is critical for reducing hypercapnia in patients with COPD exacerbations or acute hypercapnic respiratory failure.IndicationsCPAP: hypoxemia without major ventilatory failure (e.g., cardiogenic pulmonary edema, atelectasis, OSA).BiPAP: hypercapnia with increased work of breathing (e.g., COPD exacerbation, neuromuscular weakness, obesity hypoventilation).A helpful way to conceptualize CPAP and BiPAP is through the hairdryer analogy. Despite all we know about the Civil War, its causes, battles, characters, issues, impacts, and legacy, few books have explored Canada's role in the bloody conflict that claimed more than 600,000 lives. Until From Underground Railroad to Rebel Refuge: Canada and the Civil War (ECW Press, 2022) by Brian Martin. A surprising 20,000 Canadians went south to take up arms on both sides of the conflict, while thousands of enslaved people, draft dodgers, deserters, recruiters, plotters, and spies fled northward to take shelter in the attic that is Canada. Though many escaped slavery and found safety through the Underground Railroad, they were later joined by KKK members wanted for murder. Confederate President Jefferson Davis along with several of his emissaries and generals found refuge on Canadian soil, and many plantation owners moved north of the border. Award-winning journalist Brian Martin will open eyes in both Canada and the United States to how the two countries and their citizens interacted during the Civil War and the troubled times that surrounded it.
