Queen Charlotte on Bridgerton is inspired by the real-life Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen Consort of the United Kingdom. On Bridgerton, Charlotte is shown as a Black woman living in Regency England. There have long been rumours about Charlotte's real-life Black ancestry. To understand this complex situation, I sat down with two experts to learn more. In interviews recorded in 2023 and revisited here, I spoke with Dr. Stacey Murrell about Queen Charlotte's ancestory, and with Dr. Brooke Newman about how Charlotte was viewed during her lifetime. Rebels, to be fair, it's just that Burnz is VERY passionate about the ethical treatment of animals. (It's not like he came on the show to break the record. I have a priest for that.)So, if an "F-bomb" or 20 came out of his mouth, who am I to judge? I don't swear on the show, but you should hear me when I'm shaving my back and I misspell my name. (Yes, when I'm doing them both at once!) But he brought up a lot of interesting points in the course of the interview which were certainly food ( or puppy chow?) for thought. If you've got the same kind of passion that he does for animals, be sure to check out his podcast. But maybe listen on headphones. I don't want my priest to get jealous. No, I am not sharing a deep conversation I had with a colleague on the back and all its complexities for this episode. I am, however, highlighting that the back, any back, at any moment, is having thousands of conversations. All the time. Our back routines are not just the warmup. They are so much more. And I am not your typical massage therapist. After 20 years of experience and thousands of clients, I have learned that massage therapy is SO MUCH more than a relaxing experience at a spa. I see soft tissue as more than merely a physical element but a deeply complex, neurologically driven part of who you are. I use this knowledge to work WITH you—not ON you—to create change that works. This is the basis of my approach. As a massage therapist, I have worked in almost every capacity, including massage clinics, physical therapy clinics, chiropractor offices, spas, private practice, and teaching. I have learned incredible techniques and strategies from each of my experiences. In my 20 years as a massage therapist, I have never stopped growing. It's Monday, March 16th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus 400 Christians murdered in Congo in one year Christians are being attacked, murdered, and abducted in the Democratic Republic of the Congo every week, and the violence appears to be worse than ever, reports International Christian Concern. Between July 1, 2024 and July 1, 2025, the Institute for International Religious Freedom reported that nearly 400 Christians were murdered in the African nation of Congo. And this is only a fraction of the total violence being perpetrated. Rebel militias have gained vast influence over the Christian-majority nation due to extremist Islamist ideologies, years-long civil wars, and political upheaval. According to Open Doors, Congo is the 29th most oppressive country worldwide for Christians. The persecuted Christians in Congo are no doubt praying Psalm 91 which says, “I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.' Surely, He will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. … You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day. … A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.” (verses 2,3,5, 7-8) Missile strikes U.S. Embassy in Iraq A missile has struck a helipad inside the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq as President Donald Trump's war on Iran heads into its third week, reports The Daily Mail. Plumes of smoke were seen above the U.S. embassy in the Iraqi capital. The missile landed within the embassy's boundaries. Pentagon sending assault ship & 2,500 Marines toward Iran The Pentagon is deploying the U.S.S. Tripoli and 2,500 Marines to the Middle East after President Trump vowed Friday to unleash “unparalleled firepower,” reports the New York Post. On Friday morning, War Secretary Pete Hegseth gave this overview. HEGSETH: “With every passing hour, we know, and we know they know, that the military capabilities of their evil regime are crumbling. They can barely communicate, let alone coordinate. They're confused, and we know it. Our response? We will keep pressing. We will keep pushing, keep advancing. No quarter, no mercy for our enemies.” Iran's blocking Strait of Hormuz leading to global oil price spike The deployment of the amphibious assault ship comes as the American military admits it's currently unable to break Iranian influence over the vital Strait of Hormuz as global oil prices spike. The Strait of Hormuz is located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and is one of the world's most strategically important choke points. The expected two-week voyage from East Asia matches Energy Secretary Chris Wright's prediction of reopening the crucial waterway “by the end of the month.” Secretary Hegseth was perturbed by a CNN report that Iran's stranglehold of the Strait of Hormuz was a surprise. HEGSETH: “More fake news from CNN. Reports that the ‘Trump administration underestimated the Iran war's impact on the Strait of Hormuz.' “Patently ridiculous, of course! For decades, Iran has threatened shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This is always what they do: Hold the Strait hostage. CNN doesn't think we thought of that. It's a fundamentally unserious report.” Idaho House urges Supreme Court to invalidate homosexual “marriage” The Idaho House of Representatives has voted to reject the Supreme Court's 2015 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges and urged the justices to reconsider the decision legalizing homosexual marriage nationwide, reports the Herzog Foundation. Lawmakers approved House Joint Memorial 17 last Tuesday in a 44-26 vote. All Democrats voted against the measure, and a small number of Republicans joined them. The resolution now heads to the Idaho Senate. The memorial states the Legislature “rejects the Obergefell decision” and “calls upon the Supreme Court of the United States to reverse Obergefell and restore the natural definition of marriage.” Supporters say the 2015 ruling overrode the authority of states and ignored the will of voters who had already defined marriage in state law. The resolution says Obergefell “is at odds with the Constitution of the United States and the principles upon which the United States is established.” It also says the ruling “arbitrarily and unjustly” cast aside the historic understanding of marriage, which “has been recognized as the union of one man and one woman for more than 2,000 years.” Idaho Republican State Rep. Tony Wisniewski sponsored the memorial. He said supporters oppose “the debasing of the term of marriage to that of something that is abhorrent to many of us.” The memorial also points to Idaho voters' earlier decision on the issue. In 2006, 63% of voters approved Amendment 2, which added language to the state Constitution defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Supporters argue the Supreme Court brushed aside that vote when it issued the Obergefell ruling. The resolution also states the decision “may have been illegitimately adjudicated” because two justices in the majority, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan, had previously officiated homosexual weddings and did not recuse themselves. The memorial now moves to the Idaho Senate. The governor does not play a role because joint memorials do not require a signature. “Educated for Liberty” film urges Christian parents to wake up And finally, the rise of government-controlled schools and secular education has produced a decline of moral and academic excellence, which has led to a loss of liberty, reports The Providence Foundation. Schools have become progressively dangerous. Some of the most negative influences that young Americans can face today are found in public schools. Exposure to drugs, assault, rape, and murder are becoming more and more common. Radical transgender and homosexual ideology is promoted in classrooms, and reinforced by biological males having access to girls' restrooms and being allowed to compete in girls' sports. Well, there's a new Christian documentary out entitled Educated for Liberty. It urges Christian parents to pull their kids out of public schools and homeschool them or place them in private Christian schools instead. DAVID BARTON: “If you can't think biblically, then what you have is a bunch of secular-thinking people who attend church which will never change a community in the right direction.” RHONDA THOMAS: “We're not, as a church, raising up parents that understand their responsibility in the education of their children.” CAROL SWAIN: “Sunday School is fine. It's good. Vacation Bible School: Fine and good, but it's not enough.” CAROLE ADAMS: “Education is discipleship -- one way or another. Discipling our children in a secularized society, or it's discipling them to Christ.” CASEY GORDON: “How could you possibly segregate the concept of education from the duty and responsibility of the Christian faith, and that they should be trained in the Christian faith and in a Christian way?” ALEX NEWMAN: “For hundreds of years in this country, the Bible was the essential book. It was the foundation of everything. And yet, here we are where it's actually controversial that we should have the Bible in education. It's truly astounding.” MRS. SAM SORBO: “Give your children the Bible, and you give them an understanding of God, which is education. Then the world will become clear to them, and they'll be world changers.” Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Watch the film, Educated for Liberty, for free through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. 5. Julia: The Tool and Rebel of Augustus (9)Augustus used his only daughter, Julia, as a political tool to secure his heirs. He forced her into multiple marriages with potential successors like Agrippa and Tiberius. While she was initially obedient and produced five children, Julia eventually rebelled by engaging in very public affairs, including one with the son of her father's rival, Mark Antony. Furious that she undermined his public image of family virtue, Augustus exiled her to a remote island for nearly twenty years. After Augustus died, Tiberius took control and starved her to death. Jerry AKA Caser Rebel is back with a chilling look at the 1978–1979 encounters around Kaser, North Carolina, near the South Mountains and Carpenter's Knob. Witnesses including Minnie Cook, Sally White, the Price family, and Gay Smith reported a large black, hairy, humanlike figure prowling properties, killing animals, leaving tracks, and unleashing terrifying howls, screams, and strange yodeling wails.Drawing from reports documented by Robert Williams, who helped popularize the name “Knobby,” Jerry explores the possibility that more than one threat was involved, including an oversized black panther and a third track type he believes may point to a Dogman. The episode also dives into the fear of feral people in Appalachia, with accounts of eerie communication, violent encounters, a destroyed 1978 campsite, and a 2021 cave investigation that revealed a barefoot human track and signs of repeated human activity.Rebel's Dark Tales of Appalachia YouTubeEmail BrianGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? Hook The premiere is finally here, the fandom is fully activated, and the reactions are all over the map. In this listener feedback episode, Mary and Blake sort through the love, the frustration, the theories, and the very real end-of-an-era feelings surrounding Outlander Season 8 Episode 1, "Soul of a Rebel." Ratings Listener Kilt ratings in this episode generally land in the 4.0–4.7 range, even while many listeners still hammer the Faith storyline and debate whether the reunion beats really landed. Spoiler Warning Full spoilers for Outlander Season 8 Episode 1, "Soul of a Rebel," with discussion of prior-season storylines and listener theories. Episode Snapshot Mary and Blake open by talking about why final seasons hit differently — why endings matter, why fans get more intense when a story they've lived with for years starts heading toward the finish line, and why this premiere feels like Outlander's "senior year." Then they release the hounds and dive into reactions from Nerd Clan members, emails, Facebook comments, and voicemails. A lot of listeners loved being back on the Ridge, seeing Fergus and Marsali again, hearing the Skye Boat Song, getting the modern books in the past, and watching Lord John calmly and efficiently parent William into adulthood. But there is also one thing that seems to be uniting almost everyone: the Faith storyline is setting people off. Some think it undercuts one of the most devastating arcs the show has ever done. Others are willing to let it play out. And a few are already spinning wild theories about Claire's family, time travel, and how all of this may connect to the endgame. Also in this episode Why Mary sees Outlander's final season as the show's "senior year" Why Blake thinks endings give the whole journey meaning Why so many listeners are pushing back on the Faith storyline The split over the Ridge reunion: moving or underwhelming? One answer is about the Iranian people — especially the Persians who fled the ayatollahs and built new lives in Canada. Toronto and Vancouver are full of them. Many came here after the Islamic Revolution turned a modernizing U.S. ally into a brutal theocracy. Most are secular. Most despise the regime. Most dream of seeing their country free again. That Iran is worth sympathizing with. The other answer is about the regime. The Islamic Republic is not just another dictatorship. It is a fascist theocracy built on anti-Americanism, anti-Israel hatred, terrorism and religious fanaticism. It arms proxies like Hamas and Hezbollah. It targets civilians on purpose. It wants nuclear weapons. And unlike secular tyrannies, it is not constrained by ordinary ideas of deterrence or mutually assured destruction. That regime is now on everyone's mind as Israel and the United States strike Iranian military assets, missiles and nuclear facilities. But Iran's response is never limited to the battlefield. It lashes out asymmetrically — through terrorism, proxies, intimidation and soft targets. That includes the West. Jewish institutions in Europe and North America have been attacked. Synagogues in Canada have been shot at. A U.S. consulate was targeted. And yet even now, Canada's political class cannot bring itself to speak clearly about what Iran is — or what it is doing here. Take Mark Carney. It has now come out that a Canadian military installation was attacked by Iran two weeks ago. Thankfully, no Canadians were hurt. But Carney kept it quiet. And when finally asked about it, his answer was not outrage, not retaliation, not even a serious condemnation. His answer was that Canada would not take part in “offensive actions.” Offensive actions? Canada was attacked. Retaliating against an attack is not “offensive.” Keeping it secret and then scolding reporters for asking about it is not leadership. It is weakness. And Carney is not alone. Gregor Robertson, now a federal Liberal, managed to invoke the war with Iran not to condemn terrorism, not to denounce the regime, but to explain away Canada's housing crisis. Apparently Iran is now to blame for home prices too. It was absurd. It made no sense. But it revealed something important: to these people, Iran is not chiefly a terror state. It is a political talking point, a prop to excuse their domestic failures. Evan Solomon was no better. More vague talking points. More mush. More attempts to fold Iran into a generic Liberal message about affordability and “plans.” Not a word of seriousness about the regime itself, or the fact that Iran has agents operating in Canada. Then there is Doug Ford. Back in 2018, Ford said he would not tolerate Al-Quds Day in Ontario — the annual hate march created by the ayatollahs to glorify the destruction of Israel and spread anti-Jewish hatred in the West. And yet for eight years, he tolerated it. Only now, on the eve of this year's march, did Ford suddenly announce he was seeking an injunction to stop it. Not months ago. Not weeks ago. Not even a few days ago. The day before. It was completely unserious. Any court application launched at the last minute was almost certain to fail on timing alone. Ford knew about these annual marches for years. He did nothing. And then, with cameras rolling and the event already imminent, he decided to perform toughness. The police are unserious. The Ontario government is unserious. The federal government is unserious. And in a country this full of Iranian regime sympathizers and agents, that is becoming dangerous. Canada now has leaders who cannot even say plainly that Iran is the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism, that it has attacked Canadians, and that its supporters openly organize in this country. That is what they really think about Iran. They think it can be managed. Delayed. Spun. Used. Soft-pedalled. Folded into some other message. They do not treat it as the threat it is. And that may be the most dangerous thing of all. GUEST: Conservative MP Garnett Genuis joins the show to discuss the 84,000 jobs lost in Canada in February and what that says about the country's failing economy.

Cheikha Rimitti was more than Algeria's musical icon - she was the embodiment of defiance itself. Born into a life of poverty and oppression, her powerful voice resonated as the rallying cry for the marginalized, fearlessly giving voice to the forbidden themes of love, sexuality, and political injustice. Rimitti's music ignited a fire for independence, challenging societal norms with each daring lyric. Though her songs faced bans and censorship, her indomitable spirit could not be silenced. A century after her birth, Rimitti's legacy burns ever brighter, inspiring a new generation of artists to remix and reinterpret her anthems of freedom. As we celebrated the 100th birthday of this trailblazing queen of raï in 2023, we honor Cheikha Rimitti - the voice that could not be oppressed, the embodiment of liberty through song. On this poignant journey through her extraordinary life, we meet the musical descendants carrying Rimitti's defiant torch forward, a century after that first cry of dissent rang out. Interestingly enough, I've noticed that my thoughts on Michele's book are already mirrored in the Amazon reviews that are out. It was a real pleasure to get to know her for a little while, too, to hear about the fascinating life that she's led so far. I don't think watching as many episodes of "Law and Order" would make me even think that I was detective material. Heck, I don't even know who stole the cookie from the cookie jar! (Please note, if you're under 50, that joke just sailed over your head like a high fly ball in Wrigley Stadium.) But she still continues to do amazing work and serve the people that a simple "thank you" seems inadequate. Maybe, "you should do a true crime podcast" would suffice? The final season opens the way a premiere probably should: with a big emotional homecoming, a whole lot of Ridge warmth, and just enough mess to remind you this show never lets anyone stay comfortable for long. Mary and Blake are thrilled to be back in Outlander with Bear McCreary, Fraser's Ridge, and all the familiar faces — but they also dig into the episode's biggest problem: the Faith thread, which feels less like elegant storytelling and more like the show getting a little too cute for its own good. Ratings Mary's Kilt Rating: 4.2 / 5 Blake's Kilt Rating: 3.8 / 5 Mary, who famously never goes easy on premieres, still lands pretty high here because the episode feels like a genuine homecoming. Blake's a little lower: he loves the Ridge reunion, Frank's presence, and the emotional texture of being back — but the "Faith of it all" drags the score down. Spoiler Warning Full spoilers for Outlander Season 8 Episode 1, "Soul of a Rebel." Episode Snapshot Jamie and Claire head back to Fraser's Ridge, and the premiere wisely leans into that sense of reunion. Everyone's back, the house is full, the hugs are doing heavy lifting, and for a little while the episode lets itself enjoy being home. But under all that comfort is a much stranger tension: Frank's book hangs over the story, Black Jack Randall echoes creep back in, William is spiraling hard, and the episode's big Faith twist raises way more questions than confidence. Add in creepy Cunningham energy and a mother who feels like the Wicked Witch of the West, and you've got a premiere that's emotionally rich, occasionally goofy, and definitely ready to start arguments. Also in this episode Why the beginning of the end is bittersweet — but still the right call for the show The Ridge reunion and why "homecoming" is the episode's saving grace Frank's book, Black Jack Randall echoes, and why Blake will never not care about Frank Mary's love for Bear McCreary's score and the updated Skye Boat Song The Faith twist, or as this podcast might call it: zombie baby vs. fake Faith William's self-destruction tour and why Lord John is basically his exhausted therapist Why the Cunningham stuff lands as creepy even when it borders on cartoonish Blake's wild theory that if the show really wanted to go for it, it would kill Jamie Listener feedback setup for the final season Segments Included Opening banter on the bittersweet joy of getting a real ending Mini recap Episode details Kilt ratings GBG: Good, Bad, Great Does this feel like a proper premiere? This week's episode is what the kids like to call a “deep cut”. It's 3 hours with the one and only Mimi Abudu (yes, the same Abudu you know). We dive into the conversation of being whimsical just for the plot, gems on building real confidence and trust in yourself/your gut. She also talks about knowing when it's time to pivot, what to avoid when making big life changes, and how to be a successful rebel as you create the life you truly want. We also get into some deeply unserious and quite serious dilemmas about a financially cursed husband and an infidelity-cursed husband — there's a pattern, it seems. In this episode, Linda McKissack and Dana Gentry reflect on their key takeaways from the Rebel Event, a large real estate conference featuring speakers on marketing, business growth, and mindset. They discuss the growing importance of authenticity and visibility in social media, emphasizing that modern success often depends less on raw ability and more on how visible and findable someone is online. Speakers at the event highlighted strategies such as sharing authentic behind-the-scenes content, building emotional connections with clients through thoughtful gestures, and positioning oneself as a knowledgeable local expert. Linda and Dana explore the challenge of adapting to new tools like AI and social media without becoming overwhelmed, encouraging professionals to adopt new platforms early and remain consistent.

For a long time, it was easy for some to dismiss the wine world that Tyler Balliet and Morgan First have spent the last 20 years carving out for themselves as frivolous or unserious. Second Glass, the zine Tyler started while working one of her first wine jobs, was a far cry from the glossy or stodgy wine publications that ruled the day. Their blockbuster tasting events, Wine Riot, sold out cities across the country but were often overlooked by the wine establishment in favor of posh Food & Wine festivals or a leading critic's “master class.” Their Rosé Mansion pop-up experience was packed day in and day out by an audience much of the wine world didn't realize it needed… until it was almost too late. Now, fresh off Tyler's James Beard Award nomination for her book The Rebel School of Wine, mainstream wine is finally listening. We sat down with Tyler and Morgan during a California tour that included speaking engagements at the DTC Wine Symposium (perhaps you've heard of it) and the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium, along with a party with friend of the pod Stacy Buchanan of Blood of Gods fame. We talked about how they've been working to make wine more fun, more colorful, and more accessible since long before those were buzzwords in the industry. We also reminisced about the chaos of the Wine Riots, where they graciously included Winery Sixteen 600 back when Sam was as wet behind the ears as the ink on the first Stanley Mouse labels. Most importantly, we talked about how, despite the setbacks they've faced, Tyler and Morgan have continued to succeed by putting their heads down and believing in their vision. It might look like its all rainbows and mirrorballs from the outside, but underneath it all are two people deeply knowledgeable about wine and completely dedicated to sharing it with anyone curious enough to show up. This one's a fun ride. Bust out a sticker book, some colored pencils, grab a couple bottles you love and buckle up. [Ep 403]

Some mornings on The Rizzuto Show, everything runs like a well-oiled radio machine. This… is not one of those mornings. In this episode, the gang dives into a chaotic round of Rizz Show Password, and what should be a simple guessing game quickly becomes a masterclass in confusion, overthinking, and questionable clue strategy. If you've ever yelled at your car radio because the answer feels obvious, congratulations — you'll fit right in with this comedy podcast episode. It starts innocent enough: clues flying, teammates panicking, and listeners trying to piece together words from a trail of breadcrumbs like “South,” “Wild,” and “Outlaw.” Somehow that leads to the correct answer of Rebel, proving that sometimes the most chaotic path is still technically the right one. Then things get weirder. The crew stumbles into the now-legendary “Trash Panda” moment, where raccoons get the respect they deserve… and a contestant learns that the internet's favorite nickname for them isn't exactly common knowledge for everyone. But the real meltdown — the moment that will absolutely live in Rizz Show history — is when the word turnip appears. You would think a root vegetable would be easy, right?Wrong.Clues include things like “root,” “potato,” “greens,” “garden,” and somehow — in a moment that should probably be studied by communication experts — “areolas.”Yes. Areolas. What follows is nearly ten minutes of the most baffling, hilarious guessing spiral you'll ever hear on a morning show. By the time someone finally says the word “turnip,” everyone in the room is emotionally exhausted and questioning their own intelligence. And just when you think the chaos is over, the final round somehow lands on Green Lantern, thanks to clues like “light,” “green,” “Chinese,” and “handheld,” which sounds like a recipe for confusion but miraculously works. This episode perfectly captures what makes The Rizzuto Show such a ridiculous daily hang: unpredictable conversations, ridiculous guesses, and the kind of spontaneous comedy that only happens when friends are trying way too hard to win a game on live radio. If you enjoy weird news, hilarious fails, pop culture commentary, and friends roasting each other before 8am, this is exactly the kind of comedy podcast energy you came for.So buckle up for trash pandas, vegetable drama, and one of the most unintentionally hilarious Password rounds in Rizz Show history.Because sometimes the hardest word in the English language… is turnip.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Here we sharpen the person behind the practitioner by focusing on things that improve our performance, optimizing team dynamics and the human behavior that embodies the hidden curriculum of medicine. Today we are exploring the imperative topic of rest and why it’s not just about sleeping. The second of a two part series, hosted by Dr. Mark Ramzy with guests Dr. Maureen Aiad and Dr. Amil Badoolah, continue our discussion but this time on the multifaceted nature of sleep, how it serves as medicine and how we can use our tools deliberately to get more of it! Cognitive Question How would your clinical performance, patience with families, and long-term career sustainability change if you treated sleep as a non-negotiable clinical intervention rather than a flexible “nice-to-have”? 💤How is Sleep Different From Rest? 1. Rest reduces load; sleep repairs systemsWe previously talked about the 7 types of rest and you can check that out hereExamples of physical rest include: pausing tasks, stepping away from the monitor, taking a walk, stretching, breathing, journaling, connecting with a colleague. This lightens your cognitive/emotional burden.Sleep is fundamentally different in that it’s an active biologic process that helps:Consolidates memory and learning (yes, including the tough cases from last night).Regulates mood, impulse control, and emotional reactivity.Supports immunity, metabolic health, and cardiovascular function.Repairs tissue, replenishes neurotransmitters, and fine-tunes neural networks. You can have “rested but underslept” days (you took breaks but got 4 hours in bed), and “slept but unrested” days (you got hours, but all junk sleep). Both matter, but they are not interchangeable.2. Sleep architecture vs. “knocking out”True restorative sleep cycles through NREM and REM in predictable patterns.Alcohol, late caffeine, and fragmented nights may help you fall asleep faster but:Suppress REM.Shorten deep sleep.Increase awakenings and light sleep. The result: you technically slept, but your brain didn’t get the “software updates” it needed.Biology isn’t built for your scheduleCircadian rhythms were designed for light-day / dark-night cycles, not:10 pm–7 am ED shifts.24-hour calls.6 nights in a row followed by days.Your body can adapt partially, but not instantly and not perfectly. That’s why:You can feel “jet-lagged” even when you haven’t traveled.Sleep before and after nights feels odd and fragile.Recognizing that “this is biologically unnatural” is key: you’re not weak; you’re fighting physiology. 🏥How This Applies to the Emergency Department or ICU? Performance & safetySleep deprivation:Slows reaction time and increases error rate.Impairs risk assessment and complex decision-making.Drops your frustration tolerance with consultants, families, and staff. In both emergency medicine and critical care, that translates into:Anchoring on the wrong diagnosis.Missing subtle clinical changes.Snapping at a tech, nurse or resident and damaging team culture. Chronic health for chronic shift workLong-term sleep disruption is associated with:Hypertension, diabetes, obesity.Depression, anxiety, burnout.Arrhythmias (e.g., AFib) and increased stroke risk.Possibly increased all-cause mortality. You’re already in a high-stress, high-exposure specialty. Chronically poor sleep amplifies that risk profile and can end a career early—or make you miserable while you’re still in it.Culture of “heroics” vs. healthSkipping sleep to pick up extra shifts, late meetings, or “just one more note” is often praised. We rarely celebrate:The attending who says “no” to a 2 pm meeting post-nights.The resident who defends their blackout-curtains-and-earplugs routine. 🛏️Different Ways to Improve Your Sleep Clarify your “sleep non-negotiables”Decide how many hours you realistically need to function (e.g., 7–9 on off days, realistic blocks on nights).Treat those hours as you would a procedure time—blocked, protected, and respected.Use caffeine like a drug, not a reflexAim for ≤ 2 cups equivalent on most days.Avoid caffeine within 4–6 hours of your planned sleep time (remember: it can hang around up to 12 hours).Consider scheduling caffeine for:Early in the shift for alertness.Strategic “coffee naps” (see below), not late-night chugging.Respect alcohol’s impact on sleepRecognize that even small to moderate doses degrade sleep architecture.Avoid using alcohol as a “sleep aid”—you’ll fall asleep faster but sleep worse. If you do drink, separate it from bedtime and keep it modest.Optimize food and fluid timingHydrate consistently on shift, but taper fluids ~4 hours before bed to reduce nocturnal bathroom trips.Avoid heavy, spicy, or large meals within 2–3 hours of sleep to decrease reflux and discomfort.Plan a light, balanced “pre-sleep” snack if going to bed hungry keeps you awake.Move your body (but not right before bed)Regular exercise improves sleep depth and latency.Try to avoid intense workouts within 2 hours of bedtime. On shift: micro-movement (stairs, brisk walks between pods, quick stretch sessions) can help alertness without wrecking sleep later.Control light exposureMaximize sunlight or bright light after waking (even if that’s 3–4 pm after a night).Minimize bright light and screens before sleep:Dim lights.Use night mode/blue-light filters if you must scroll. For daytime sleep:Use blackout curtains, tinfoil, cardboard, or sleep masks.Yes seriously use tinfoil if you have to, we talk about it on the podcast episode!Aim for “I might be blind” darkness—so dark you can’t see your hand in front of your face.Dial in your sleep environmentCool room temperature (fan or AC if possible).White noise or sound machine to mask household/traffic noise.Earplugs and eye masks as needed.Bed used primarily for sleep (and sex)—not for charting, doom scrolling, or email.Strategic power napsKeep naps ≤ 20–30 minutes to avoid sleep inertia.Prefer early-afternoon or pre-night-shift naps.Coffee nap strategy:Drink a small coffee.Immediately lie down for a 20–30 min nap.Wake up as the caffeine kicks in, combining nap benefit + stimulant.Thoughtful melatonin useRemember melatonin is a hormone, not a vitamin gummy.Lower doses often work as well as (or better than) large OTC doses.Use it intentionally and intermittently, not as a crutch every night.Over-reliance may reduce your own natural production and its effectiveness over time.Build pre-sleep ritualsRepeated, calming habits signal your body it’s time to downshift:Warm shower, gentle stretching, or yoga.Guided breathing or body scan.Brief journaling or “brain dump” of tasks to get them out of your head and onto paper.Protect from pathologic patternsIf despite consistent effort you:Snore heavily, stop breathing, or gasp in sleep.Feel excessively sleepy driving home or at work.Cannot fall asleep or stay asleep for weeks to months.Consider evaluation for sleep apnea, insomnia, or shift-work sleep disorder with your physician or sleep specialist. ⏩Immediate Action Steps for Before/During/After Your Next Shift 1. **Before the Shift**: Plan a 20–90 minute nap before your first night shift (many clinicians find 3–5 hours earlier in the day is ideal).I treat ED and ICU shifts very differently. I always sleep 3-5 hours before my night shifts aiming for the full 5 (sometimes 6 or more) hours for my ED shifts because you always have to be “on”. Depending on the ICU I’m working in, I may have a bit more downtime so 3 to 5 hours is plenty.Set a caffeine plan: decide in advance when your last dose will be (e.g., none after 2–3 am if sleeping at 8–9 am).Tell your household, “This is my sleep block” and agree on a plan for kids, pets, deliveries, etc.On my calendar, I completely block off time called “Pre-call sleep” so no meetings can be scheduled and then put my phone in airplane mode2. **During the Shift** Hydrate early; taper fluids in the last 3–4 hours of your shift Eat something light but adequate; avoid “last-minute” heavy meals right before sign-out.Build in micro-breaks and movement: one or two short walks, a few stretches, even a quick stair run if safe.Get outside or near a window for a few minutes of light exposure if possible.3. **After the Shift**On the way home:Use sunglasses to reduce bright morning light if you’re aiming for sleep soon.Avoid “just checking” email or messages; shift into wind-down mode.At home:Do a brief, calming decompression (shower, light snack, 10–15 minutes of low-stimulation TV or reading).Make your room cold, quiet, and dark (blackout curtains, tinfoil/cardboard, white noise, fan).Put your phone on Do Not Disturb and physically place it away from the bed.On my calendar, I completely block off time called “Post-call sleep” so again no meetings can be scheduled and then I personally don’t just put my phone on Do Not Disturb but rather in airplane mode and WIFI OFF If you can’t sleep after ~20–30 minutes:Get out of bed, do something calming in dim light (breathing, gentle stretching, journaling).Return to bed when sleepy—this trains your brain to associate bed with sleep, not frustration. Conclusion Rest and sleep are both critical—but they’re not interchangeable. Rest helps you step out of the constant “on” of our jobs, while sleep is the biological intervention that restores your ability to show up safely and sustainably. Rest ≠ sleep. Rest reduces load; sleep repairs your brain and body. You need both, on purpose. As EM and ICU clinicians, we’re trying to perform formula-one-level medicine with engines that often only see half their maintenance. You won’t fix shift work. You can build a sleep system that respects your biology, your schedule, and your life at home. That system starts with valuing sleep, then prioritizing it, personalizing it, trusting the process when it’s imperfect, and actively protecting both your routine and your mindset. 🚨 Clinical Bottom Line Sleep is medicine. Shift work is biologically unnatural. Struggling does not mean you’re weak; it means you’re human fighting physiology. Use your tools deliberately. Caffeine, naps, light, food, movement, melatonin, and environment can be leveraged—or can quietly sabotage you. Build and defend a personalized sleep routine. Communicate it, normalize it, and protect it from casual encroachment. You can’t control every trauma, code, or admission—but you can control how seriously you take your own recovery. Your patients, your team, and your future self all benefit when you do. Further Reading Espie CA. The ‘5 principles’ of good sleep health. Unlike the shadowy midnight raids of the past, the sweeping, intelligence-driven assault on Iran's ruling regime was a bold daylight operation. The United States and Israel pinpointed senior leadership with precision made possible by deep surveillance and cyber penetration. Reports suggest Israeli intelligence even infiltrated Tehran's traffic systems to track key figures in real time. That's not just military superiority, it's informational dominance. But what's different now is the response from other Western nations...
