This week, host Richard Graves sits down with Charlie Binns, Lead Nutritionist for the England men's cricket team, fresh from Perth as preparations ramp up for the Ashes. Charlie lifts the lid on what elite fuelling actually looks like across five-day Tests, why recovery is an arms race, and how his team builds simple, repeatable habits the players will actually use, from colour-coded carb periodisation to the humble banana bread on the snack table. He also shares the months of behind-the-scenes logistics you never see: venue-by-venue menus for lunch, tea and post-match; shipping batch-tested supplements across the world; and how day–night “pink ball” Tests flip the entire eating schedule on its head. Expect practical insights, no fluff, and a proper appreciation for just how physically brutal modern cricket really is. What you'll learn from the episode * Cricket's true physical demands: why a Test bowler can cover ~50 km across a match and repeatedly absorb ~8× bodyweight through the front leg, and what that means for fuelling and recovery. * Tour prep, six months out: coordinating stadium caterers, training-day menus, and freighted, batch-tested supplements, plus how strategies are trialled at home before heading overseas. * Match-day fuelling made usable: the role of lunch, tea and all-day snack stations; when to use liquids vs solids; and why simple, high-carb options (wraps, bagels, flapjacks, banana bread) win. * Carbohydrate periodisation in practice: using colour-coded days to align intake with bowling/fielding workloads, then ramping to a high-carb taper before the first ball. * Refuel like a pro: stacking recovery windows, shakes on the final whistle, high-carb changeroom options, team-room snacks, and evening meals, to reduce soreness and restore glycogen for day two (and three). * Day–night Test adjustments: how pink-ball timings shift pre-match, “lunch”, “tea” and sleep hygiene, and the tweaks Charlie makes to keep players alert without compromising recovery. * Communication that sticks: nudging over lecturing, tailoring to individual preferences, and equipping S&C staff to deliver on-ground during play. About Charlie Binns Charlie Binns (BSc, MSc, SENr, UKAD, ISAK) is the Lead Nutritionist for the England & Wales Cricket Board's men's team. He joined the ECB setup after roles across elite rugby and football, including First-Team / Senior Men's Nutritionist at Tottenham Hotspur and consultancy with Birmingham City FC. He also founded CMB Performance & Nutrition, serving athletes and organisations from academy to international level. Charlie's academic route began with a First-Class BSc in Sport & Exercise Nutrition at Leeds Trinity University, followed by an MSc in Applied Sports Nutrition at St Mary's University, Twickenham. He is SENr-registered, UKAD-accredited, and ISAK L1 certified. Before moving into cricket full-time, Charlie built experience in multiple environments to broaden his practice, from Richmond Rugby during his Master's to league and academy football, a deliberate multi-sport grounding he still credits for his applied approach in cricket. Within England Cricket's performance team, Charlie's remit spans: Tour logistics & catering coordination across venues (training, lunch, tea, post-match menus). Carb periodisation frameworks aligned to bowling/fielding loads and match phases. Recovery protocols (e.g., immediate shakes, tart cherry, staged refuelling) to hit repeat high-output days. He's been part of touring groups across the subcontinent, South Africa and Australia, and has supported senior and Lions squads in major series and tournaments. Media reporting has highlighted his role in individualising fuelling targets for players during high-demand campaigns. Outside the ECB, Charlie has hosted CPD for nutritionists across the county game and continues to contribute to practitioner development within cricket.
Most people think sugar is the worst carb — but there's one “healthy” carb that's even more dangerous. In this episode, Ben Azadi reveals how whole-grain wheat bread, often labeled as “heart-healthy,” secretly shuts off your fat-burning hormones, causes insulin resistance, and keeps you inflamed — especially after 40. You'll learn how this common food spikes your glucose just like candy, blocks your metabolism for hours, and fuels hormone imbalances like leptin resistance, thyroid slowdown, and estrogen dominance. Ben shares real data from his glucose monitor experiment and explains why removing wheat products for just 14 days can dramatically boost energy, improve sleep, and restart fat burning. You'll also discover the best carb alternatives — sweet potatoes, cooled white rice, and root vegetables — plus how to download his free 7-Day Fat Loss Protocol to finally heal your metabolism and reclaim your energy.

You could be consuming the world's most dangerous carbohydrate without even realizing it. This hidden carb spikes your blood sugar, even more than actual sugar. Find out about the #1 most dangerous carb in this video. 0:00 Introduction: The #1 most dangerous carb in the world1:58 What is the worst carbohydrate? 2:20 What is starch? 5:20 Refined carbohydrates and chronic disease 6:08 Hidden sugar foods8:31 Food vs. ultra-processed foods It's no secret that ultra-processed carbs can take a serious toll on your health. Consuming this dangerous carbohydrate can have the following side effects:•Development of type 2 diabetes and a fatty liver•Insulin resistance•Visceral fat•Feeds pathogens in the gut •Inflammation•Increased LDL cholesterolProducts containing this ingredient can be marketed as zero sugar, even though it quickly turns to sugar in the blood. It's incredibly cheap, at about 20 cents per pound, and has no health benefits. It's used as a filler, and the average person consumes between 60 and 250 pounds per year. You can find this ingredient in gluten-free foods, baby formulas, baked goods, and other refined foods. Surprisingly, many athletes also consume this product. The carb we're talking about is industrial starch, such as modified food starch, corn starch, and maltodextrin. Starch is a string of glucose molecules. When a starch is modified in a lab, its bonds become very weak and fragile, causing it to turn into sugar very quickly in the body. Industrial starches are processed with chemicals such as sodium trimetaphosphate, vinyl acetate, bleach, and octenyl succinic anhydride. These chemicals are considered GRAS (generally recognized as safe), but they are self-regulated. Industrial starches are directly responsible for the complications associated with type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's, brain plaquing, and fibrosis of the liver. People rarely consume starch alone. Most junk foods are composed of starches, seed oils, and sugar. Consuming starch with seed oils is a deadly combination! Hidden sugars are also consumed in much higher quantities than actual sugar. Food is defined as “that which is eaten to sustain life, to promote the growth and repair of tissues.” By this definition, starch is not food!Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio:Dr. Berg, age 60, is a chiropractor who specializes in Healthy Ketosis & Intermittent Fasting.

For-hire trucking capacity is contracting significantly due to a 32% reduction in tractor builds (taking equipment below replacement levels) and stricter FMCSA English Language Proficiency enforcement, which could affect up to 10% of the driver pool. Despite shrinking capacity, freight rates are only seeing marginal spot market improvements of 1-2%, failing to keep pace with 3% inflation, due to volume volatility and broader macroeconomic risks. Regulatory friction is also widespread, as a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking the California Air Resources Board from enforcing its Clean Truck Partnership against major OEMs (like Daimler, PACCAR, and Volvo). This legal development was driven by the judge's conclusion that CARB's lawsuit was attempting to enforce potentially federally preempted standards, creating an "impossible situation" for manufacturers after federal waivers for rules like the Advanced Clean Truck rule were withdrawn. In stark contrast to regulatory tangles, technology offers surprisingly frictionless solutions: fleets using complete AI safety solutions saw a 73% reduction in crash rates over 30 months, nearly double the industry average. Within just six months of implementation, these systems also achieved a 49% drop in harsh driving events and an 84% reduction in mobile phone use behind the wheel, alongside a 57% boost in Hours of Service compliance. Serious, hyperfocused investment is flowing into specialized logistics globally, notably in air cargo where Cargojet launched a new direct weekly service connecting its Canadian hubs to Liege Airport in Belgium. Latam Cargo also boosted its Europe-South America capacity by 25% (reaching 15 weekly frequencies), adding specialized routes like São Paulo to Brussels with a stop in Recife to handle mango exports. Domestically, TRAC Intermodal is focusing on standardization and efficiency by partnering with Florida East Coast Railway to stage standardized, GPS-integrated 53-ft domestic chassis directly at FEC terminals, aiming to build a national footprint for their T-53 program. Meanwhile, UPS completed its $1.6 billion acquisition of Andlauer Healthcare Group to strengthen its specialized Canadian cold chain and accelerate its strategic goal of doubling high-margin healthcare logistics revenue to $20 billion by 2026. A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction stopping the California Air Resources Board from enforcing the Clean Truck Partnership against truck manufacturers. This block occurred because a state court lawsuit filed by CARB seeking OEM compliance was viewed by the federal court as an attempt to enforce potentially preempted zero emissions standards, particularly since Congress withdrew the EPA waivers that allowed the Advanced Clean Truck rule to go into effect. UPS has completed the acquisition of Canadian logistics provider Andlauer Healthcare Group for $1.6 billion in cash. Michael Andlauer, AHG's founder and CEO, will now lead UPS Canada Healthcare and AHG, significantly bolstering UPS's specialized cold chain network and strategic focus on the high-margin healthcare sector. Learn how AI is reshaping fleet operations with the release of Samsara's Safety Report: Benchmarking the Future of Safety. The report reveals that fleets implementing complete AI safety solutions saw a 73% reduction in crash rates over 30 months, with visibility and immediacy provided by dual-facing dash cams being identified as the biggest difference-maker.

("One Fifty Two") Ted celebrates Mosaic Day by breaking free from the "walled garden" of light sport aviation and "soloing" both a purple lightning-bolt Cessna 152 and a 172. As our friend Dominic eloquently writes, sport pilots are now "loose upon the natural wilds of general aviation," discovering that some planes "require you to hold the yoke one-third to the right just to fly straight and level. It's a feature." Ted's conclusion: "I buttered almost every landing...they're so easy to land compared to the egg." The bad news? He keeps forgetting carb heat exists.Ben logs his "maybe second best landing ever" (wife-verified!) at the Gainesville fly-in and surprises her with a short field takeoff. Brian gets Nashville Approach's fastest "stay outta the Class Charlie" dismissal ever, attends a stellar Commemorative Air Force hangar dance, and reminds us that filing IFR doesn't guarantee instant gratification when controllers are slammed. The crew tackles listener feedback from newly-minted MOSAIC pilots navigating "airframe chaos" (G1000s, steam gauges, and seats "smushed flat" so you "can hardly see over the firewall"), motion sickness solutions featuring Chick-fil-A minis and relief bands, and why even Bob Hoover dealt with air sickness. Plus community shoutouts including a 60-year-old nailing his commercial checkride with a power-off 180 in 15-gusting-25, and Xyla Foxlin getting her plane back after losing her medical.Mentioned on the show:ABY - Albany Ga: https://www.airnav.com/airport/ABYGVL - Gainesville Ga: https://www.airnav.com/airport/GVLFlySto: https://www.flysto.net/homeM93 Southernaire: https://www.airnav.com/airport/M93M54 Lebanon Tenn: https://www.airnav.com/airport/M54Ted's "soloing a 150" video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmXyFeK09ngCheckmate Aviation: https://www.checkmateaviation.com/myaeroglass: https://www.myaeroglass.com/Xyla Foxlin lost her medical: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj0H8oVS7qgXyla got her plane back!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu-T7P3o6tUJoin the Midlife Pilot Podcast community, support the show on Patreon, and get merch at www.midlifepilotpodcast.com

Today's daily update tackles extreme market volatility, starting with the unprecedented regulatory about-face by the California Air Resources Board. CARB has essentially wiped out the two biggest components of their Advanced Clean Fleets rule, including the High Priority Fleets regulation covering fleets over 50 trucks and rules that were set to bar non-ZEV trucks from port operations. We analyze the looming threat of a federal shutdown, noting that while essential safety functions like FMCSA roadside inspections and CBP cargo inspections are expected to continue, critical oversight functions will largely cease. Agencies like the Federal Maritime Commission and the Surface Transportation Board, which handles shipping disputes and vital transportation data, will suspend case processing, potentially leading to increased dwell times at major ports like LA-Long Beach. Moving to efficiency gains, we examine how AI startup Oatway is tackling the “dirty secret of full truckload”—partially filled trailers—by dynamically matching partial shipments with empty capacity on existing FTL run. This innovation optimizes existing infrastructure using machine learning and ELD data, potentially boosting net annual revenue for carriers by up to 30% while cutting shipper costs by up to 50% compared to traditional LTL. In corporate news, Interstate Personnel Services , the parent company of Paschall Truck Lines, is in formal talks to acquire J&R Sugar Trucking, which would create a combined fleet of around 2,000 trucks and 5,000 trailers. This merger strategically adds temperature-controlled refrigerated transport capacity to IPS's existing dry van network, highlighting the current premium placed on reefer capacity. Finally, Texas has halted the issuance of Commercial Driver's Licenses to non-citizens, including DACA recipients and refugees, following a federal directive aimed at tightening commercial licensing rules. Since 2015, Texas has issued almost 52,000 non-domiciled CDLs, and this regulatory move presents an immediate challenge for fleet staffing and recruitment efforts across the state. Regulatory whiplash in California as the state effectively held a funeral for the two largest components of the Advanced Clean Fleet Rules, including mandates for high-priority fleets and drayage trucks. Despite the official withdrawal of these mandates by CARB, zero-emission vehicle sales are surprisingly growing in the state, suggesting market momentum is now driven by factors beyond regulatory pressure. The ongoing pricing standoff in the parcel sector, where UPS and FedEx are imposing significant peak season surcharges despite projections for muted demand growth, has heated up. Analysts warn that demanding these high fees in a soft market is short-sighted, leading to a major diversion of volume to alternative carriers like Amazon, Walmart, and independent services like OnTrac. Our brief concludes with the tectonic plates shifting in corporate freight strategy, starting with the massive $85 billion UP-NS merger that is already forcing competitors like CSX to seek its own merger partner after a CEO change. Meanwhile, ArcBest unveiled an ambitious plan to double its adjusted earnings per share by 2028 by targeting a highly optimized, asset-based operating ratio of 87% to 90% through technology and cost controls. Finally, we address the industry's perennial challenge of safety, noting that Wyoming currently tops the list for deadly truck crashes by death rate while Texas leads the nation in total fatalities by volume. These sobering statistics are fueling calls from victim advocates for mandatory safety technology, specifically demanding that all new commercial trucks be equipped with Automatic Emergency Braking.
