Have you ever tried to change by simply thinking a new thought, only to feel frustrated when the change doesn't happen as easily as promised? The idea that if you just change your thoughts, you can change your life has been a cornerstone of personal development for years. But what if it's not the whole story? In this episode, I'm revisiting a concept from an early episode, where I taught "thinking a new thought" as the key to change. While this cognitive behavioral approach helped many of my clients, I now realize how incomplete it is. Our experience is shaped by much more than our thoughts. It's influenced by our nervous system, memories, trauma, and even cultural systems. I'll explain why thought work is useful but not enough, and why real change involves understanding the deeper layers beneath our thoughts. What if the stories we tell about stress and adversity are holding us back? What if the most resilient people are not the strongest, but the most adaptable? This episode is an invitation to rethink resilience. Dr. Steven Stein shares how the hardiness mindset shifts our relationship with challenge. A concept born in military research but relevant to artists, entrepreneurs, and everyday heroes. It's not about stoicism or sheer willpower; it's about seeing meaning in difficulty, embracing uncertainty, and committing to a journey bigger than the immediate obstacle. T You'll discover how small shifts in thinking can ripple into profound changes in how you live, work, and connect. Actionable takeaways: Cultivate challenge as a lens for growth, not a reason to retreat. Practice focusing your efforts where you have influence, not where you feel powerless. Let your commitments guide you beyond temporary discomfort. ---- Advertisers BetterHelp The world's largest online therapy provider BetterHelp.com/GrowthMindset - 10% off 1st month Liquid I.V. Step behind the velvet ropes and welcome to the VC Social Club: an intimate gathering of vinyl record collectors discussing vinyl and music topics of the day (smoking jacket is optional). The regular panel consists of host Jason Roxas, Chris (The Grooveseeker), Dom (Seekingathread), and Joel (Static ATX Records). This particular conversation kicks off discussing personal listening habits - how/where/when we listen to the music we have on vinyl - before the immortal John Bong joins the proceedings (16:04) Soon followed by another guest (Concert Buddie) (37:00) fresh off covering the looming Buckingham/Nicks reissue onslaught, the conversation dovetails into a deep dive into fast food chains and their old record labels. Did you know that KFC made records AND original extra crispy chicken? Or Cracker Barrel serves LP's and meatloaf and dumplings? It's true, it's true, it's cholesterol frenzy true. The conversation moves to a brief study on Julie Andrews, and whether she was secretly a member of the Jugalos, before attempting to get back to the last topic of the show - artists that no longer matter. Some of the names and bands will shock you (or shake your fist to the sky). Welcome to the VC Social Club. Have a seat, drinks will be served soon.

In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Mühlethaler welcomes Karen Salmansohn, a bestselling author who has sold over 2 million books globally and describes herself as someone who puts "Psychology Today and Mad Magazine in a blender and presses frappé." Known for writing self-help books for people who wouldn't be caught dead reading self-help and pioneering the self-help book with attitude—she was the first personal development author to put a curse word in a book title with "How to Be Happy, Dammit"—Karen brings her signature blend of wisdom and wit to every conversation.Karen's journey from senior VP creative director in advertising to bestselling author began with a bold leap of faith driven by pure passion. After achieving early success in advertising (including winning a Clio in her first six months on the job), she realised she wanted to write a novel. After threatening to quit, she finally did. After her first novel, she came to pen books meant to inspire people to think in new ways, more fulfilling to Karen than writing copy to convince the same people to switch toothpaste brands. Karen shares the story of how this bold decision led to a remarkable career spanning novels, self-help books, and everything in between. In their conversation, Anne and Karen explore the inspiration behind Karen's latest book, "Your To Die For Life," which emerged from both her experience of "near life experiences" (being life-adjacent rather than fully present) and the profound impact of her father's death. Karen shares how giving her father's eulogy prompted her to write her own, leading to a thorough reassessment of her priorities and inspiring her to move from working in "beast mode" to what she now calls "best mode."The discussion delves deep into Karen's practical framework for living intentionally, including her seven core values (Authentic, Brave, Curious, Discerning, Empathic love, Fun, and Gratitude) that she reverse-engineered from the top regrets of the dying. Karen explains her powerful concept of identity-based habits and "to-die lists"—daily practices that help align your actions with who you want to become, using the format "I am [core value] and so I do [action]."One of the most compelling parts of their conversation centers on Karen's marble jar ritual—a tangible way to practice mortality awareness by representing each remaining month of life as a marble, creating a monthly ritual of reflection and intentional living. Karen describes herself as a "middle of life doula," someone helping people create meaningful change while there's still runway ahead.Throughout the interview, Karen demonstrates her gift for making profound concepts accessible through humor and practical tools. From her early days writing silly poems about chemistry homework to helping readers navigate life's heaviness with levity, she embodies her belief that humor is a great survival tool and that we can find awe and meaning in everyday moments. The conversation touches on behavioral change, the importance of meaningful relationships, the power of curiosity as an antidote to fear, and how mortality awareness can awaken us to make each day more beautiful and purposeful. Karen's approach isn't about morbid fixation on death, but rather using awareness of life's finite nature to live more vividly and intentionally.A thoughtful and inspiring conversation that offers both practical tools and philosophical insights for anyone seeking to live more fully and authentically.Happy listening! If you've ever thought, “I just need to get my crap together,” while barely sleeping and running on fumes — this episode is for you. We're unpacking one of the biggest lies in the health space: that if you're not getting results, it's because you're lazy or unmotivated. The truth is.. you might be burned out. And no amount of macros, meal plans, or workouts will stick if your body is dysregulated. We'll break down how stress and sleep impact fat loss, how to tell if burnout is your real blocker, and what to focus on first so your habits can actually work with your body — not against it. When you know what sparks them in the state of nature, you can find healthy ways to spark them in daily life. But it is hard. Our brain is inherited from ancestors who had to struggle constantly to survive. Our chemicals are designed to reward us for taking action to meet our survival needs. She will teach you how, so you can enjoy your natural dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphin in new ways. She has helped thousands of people make peace with their inner mammal. Her ten books have been translated into eighteen languages. She has been on many podcasts and has her own: The Happy Brain Podcast. This method is all positive. It is not about disorders. Summary In this episode, Andy welcomes Jon Harper, author of Rebuild! Don't Repair: Why Fixing Things Doesn't Fix Things in Life. Jon shares from his personal and professional journey about the courage it takes to stop settling for temporary fixes and instead do the deeper, more intentional work of rebuilding. Drawing on lessons from his leadership experience and faith-based insights, Jon invites listeners to consider how our beliefs, habits, and leadership defaults often stem from foundations we didn't consciously choose. The conversation covers when to rebuild rather than repair, how to evaluate the people around us during transformation, and why awkwardness is often a sign of real change. Jon shares stories about quitting alcohol as a coping mechanism and the daily habits that keep him focused and grounded. He also offers a practical approach to helping children process their day—something leaders can adapt for teams, too. If you're leading a team, a project, or a personal transition and want to build something stronger and more lasting, this episode is for you! And you need to repeat the action multiple times to create the habit.” “Everybody love the platitudes. They love the clichés. They spend all day long on social media, hitting the like button on all the clichés… and they do nothing about it.” “Why do people jump on the mindset-motivation bandwagon, but they have not done anything from an action standpoint to move their life forward? Well, people feel like it's progress to listen to information, to read information. The brain gets a quick dopamine hit and says, ‘I got some information, so I'm feeling pretty good.'” “Information without action is nothing. It's a wish. It's a dream.” “We're in an overconsumption world, and I think now with AI, people don't need more information. Everybody knows what they need to do. But the excuses kick in, and 98% of the population will never do anything with the information.” “The darkest of times bring out the real person. You either confront them and move forward, or you go the other way — and that can turn out very, very badly in life. Or you end up miserable the rest of your life.” “Wisdom doesn't come when everything's great and sailing perfectly. You don't learn when you do something right. You only have the opportunity to learn when you do something wrong. That's called failing.” “Failing is a good thing. We should be encouraging people to fail. Failing means they're trying new stuff.” “Not everything we do in life is a choice.” “If I'm successful, it's because of me. If I'm not successful, it's because of me.” USEFUL RESOURCES: https://mikepedersen.com/ https://decidefastapp.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikepedersen/ https://www.instagram.com/michaeltpedersen/ https://www.instagram.com/decidefastapp/ https://www.facebook.com/mikepedersen https://www.facebook.com/getdecidefast https://x.com/mikepedersen https://x.com/decidefastapp Man Awakened: Rediscovering Purpose and Vitality After 50 (https://a.co/d/aAHCtao) Atomic Actions: Experience Transformative Breakthroughs and Unstoppable Momentum (https://a.co/d/gYzOol4) Dominate Your Market: NO BS Impact Strategies to Explode Your Business Revenues, Have More Energy, and Get the Life You Really Want (https://a.co/d/j3wkZcG) CONNECT WITH JOHN Website - https://iamjohnhulen.com Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/johnhulen Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/johnhulen X - https://x.com/johnhulen LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhulen YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLX_NchE8lisC4NL2GciIWA EPISODE CREDITS Intro and Outro music provided by Jeff Scheetz - https://jeffscheetz.com/
