The holiday season often brings a lot of joy, but it also comes with its share of stress and obligations. In this episode, I explore a simple but powerful shift that can change how you experience the holidays: the difference between saying "I have to" and recognizing "I choose to."   The habit of saying "I have to" can quickly take over during the holidays. You'll discover how recognizing your ability to choose is liberating, and how this simple shift can reduce stress and make holiday interactions lighter and more manageable. I'll guide you through practical examples of how to apply this shift to everything from family time and food choices to setting boundaries and saying no.   Get full show notes, transcript, and more information here: https://habitsonpurpose.com/203   Join the Habits on Purpose newsletter for extra tools, prompts, and stories between episodes: https://habitsonpurpose.com/

F*ck Fitting In is a deep dive into one of the most invisible forces shaping our lives: approval-seeking. In this episode, Dr. JC Doornick exposes how most of us unknowingly construct an internal A.I., an Artificial Identity, a learned algorithm designed to gain acceptance, avoid conflict, and perform appropriately. Over time, this identity edits our words, tones, decisions, and even our sense of self, until we forget where the real us ends and the performance begins. Through sharp insight, cultural critique, and the lens of the Interface Response System (IRS), this conversation reveals how approval becomes a silent operating system that keeps us rehearsing the future, regretting the past, and missing the only place authenticity exists: the present moment. You'll learn how awareness cracks the code, how curiosity (“Hmmm?”) creates cognitive distance, and how authenticity returns when the mask powers down. This episode is a call to stop auditioning for life, stop being manipulable by algorithms, social or internal, and reclaim the courage to live from truth instead of approval. Because when you stop fitting in, you don't lose yourself… You finally get yourself back. Make Sense? This conversation is about shifting from hustle to structure: how owners think about compensation, corporate structure, tax strategy, and long-term continuity before pressure forces reactive decisions. If you're scaling past seven figures and want clarity on owner pay, wealth preservation, and building a system that rewards the risk you carry, this episode gives you a strategic lens and practical next steps, without noise or theory.

Past Projection vs. Memory Rescripting Why Can't I Lose Weight? Do Demons Cause Negative Thoughts! Featuring Our Beloved Dr. Matthew May The answers to today's questions are brief and were written prior to the show. Listen to the podcast for a more in-depth discussion of each question. Here are the questions for today's podcast. Rhonda asks: What's the difference between Past Projection and Memory Rescripting? Slash asks: How do I overcome my resistance to losing weight? Constantina asks: Do negative thoughts come from demons?   And here are the answers! Rhonda asks: What's the difference between Past Projection and Memory Rescripting? I would love to learn more about Memory Rescripting, since I really don't see much difference between that and Past Projection, but maybe I am just dense.  So if we could talk about that on the next Ask David, that would be great. Thanks, Rhonda David's reply I use the term, Time Travel, and you can project yourself into the future or the past, hence Future or Past Projection. If you want a patient to travel into the past, there are a great many things you can do that might be helpful. You can do "Forgiveness Training," developed by Jaimie Galindo. Essentially, the patient talks to someone, like a parent, who abused them in some way, telling the parent how hurt they felt, and how they needed the parent's love. Or you can do Cognitive Flooding, simply "watching" some traumatic event to experience the anxiety until it wears out and loses its power to upset you. And there are many more techniques you can use to explore past experiences with a patient. Memory Rescripting is like Cognitive Flooding—you have the patient close their eyes and vividly re-experience something traumatic, like the babysitter abusing them. Then, at the height of the feelings of anxiety, anger, and helplessness, you can tell the patient that they can be like a movie director, and change the scene so there is a different outcome. For example, the patient may want to enter the scene as a powerful adult and punish the perpetrator. This is not some standard procedure, as every patient will be completely different. Often, they will want to do something violent to the perpetrator, so this procedure can be anxiety provoking for the therapist! I have only used it on a couple occasions, but had good results with it both times. I am not a strong believer that patients "must" go into the past to "work through" a prior traumatic experience, so I don't have that much need for it. But it is a good technique to have in your toolbox.   Slash asks: How do I overcome my resistance to losing weight? Dear Dr. Burns, I recently listened to your podcast episode on Habits and Addictions, and it really resonated with me. I've been going to the gym regularly, but I'm struggling with my eating habits — I tend to eat too much, and my weight hasn't been decreasing. What I've realized is that I may be experiencing what you describe as outcome resistance. A part of me feels that if I lose weight and become thin and attractive, I might still not take action in areas like dating — so then I ask myself, "Why should I even bother with weight reduction?" I'm finding it difficult to overcome this resistance, even though I want to be healthier. Could you please share some guidance or strategies to work through this kind of resistance? Thank you for all the wonderful work you do. Your podcasts have been truly insightful and helpful. Warm regards, Slash   David's reply Thanks, and we will discuss this important question on the podcast. However, in the meantime, if you can search for Triple Paradox you may find your answer. Also, you can download two free unpublished changers on habits and addictions from any page on feeling good.com, and use the Decision -Making, Tool. That, too, will give you the answer! Warmly, david   Constantina asks: Do negative thoughts come from demons? David and Rhonda, Hello. I am doing some research into "spiritual" causes of depression. I realize that you are both scientists (and BRILLIANT ones), but if you have any sources I could review, I would appreciate suggestions.  It might also make for an interesting Halloween season podcast. Do "demons" cause automatic negative thoughts. And if not demons, what actually causes them?  Please don't dismiss this as "crazy". I am a very religious person and at times I have sincerely asked the question...are depression and anxiety ...at least in part, spiritual maladies.  I have found tremendous help in Feeling Good, but also in prayer and religious practices. I want to research what has been done in terms of crossover studies/experiments (if any).  Marianne   David's reply Thank you. The spiritual underpinnings are not so much something to be researched, but can add a deeper dimension of meaning and understanding to the healing. Current thinking is that Self-Defeating Beliefs, not demons, trigger the negative thoughts. I have written about all of this extensively, so I won't try to say it all again here. But we can exchange some ideas on the podcast. Thanks! d Thanks for listening today! Matt, Rhonda, and David

Send us a textFound another series to share for you. When I ran across this from the book: “Coach Wooden's Greatest Secret: The Power of a Lot of Little Things Done Well”, by Pat Williams with Jim Denney. It's all about building healthy habits.  Find a link for the book HERE. (you can find it in many different places)  It starts off by reminding us that the best way to replace a bad habit is to replace it with a good habit.  These  eight parts remind us that it's tough to try and simply get rid of a bad habit by willpower alone.  What I'm sharing with you starting today is all about principles to keep in mind as we replace unhealthy habits with good habits.  The first is to focus on little things.  Instead of making huge changes in our lives, find small manageable tasks to focus on that lead us to the changes we want. I have always looked ahead a bit too much to the ending that I want. Then it becomes difficult, challenging and frustrating because my focus is not on the first step I need to take, but what's at the finish line. The more I read these, the more fired up I got. I hope this happens to you as well during the next few episodes.   Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.

Send us a textFor the second part of this series, Coach John Wooden reminds us “when you set too challenging a goal, you set yourself up for failure.” Again, it's the small changes that are key. This is not saying to not have BIG goals and plans, but… keep in mind the process (the little steps) to get there.  Little steps help us to keep the good habits going for a longer period of our lives. Keep working. Keep believing.  New one coming at you tomorrow.

The Strategy Skills Podcast: Management Consulting | Strategy, Operations & Implementation | Critical Thinking

In this episode, Dr. Julia Garcia explains why hope is a habit and why it is critical for us to remove what blocks hope. She describes what happens inside teams when leaders lose hope, including "the culture that creates, the burnout that leads to, the discouragement and defeat." Julia shows how unprocessed emotions drain leaders even when they appear high-functioning. "If we emotionally feel disconnected, we're going to start looking elsewhere or we're going to end up in a place of hopelessness where maybe we completely shut down in our career and now we're just a robot." One of the most memorable insights is the use of the word "maybe" to interrupt destructive thought cycles. She explains: "Maybe your next idea is the one that's going to change the game for you." "Maybe that failure wasn't a failure. It was a setup." "Maybe you have everything you need right now." Julia also demonstrates how holding unspoken emotions limits our capacity. "We can function by holding all these things in emotionally… but we actually aren't discovering what we're truly capable of because we're not fully available." Julia shares her own experiences with failure and rebuilding: "None of this was a waste. I can repurpose this." and "Maybe I can learn from this. Maybe I can come back stronger." We also discuss AI. Julia warns: "AI is increasing productivity, but it is decreasing the personal humanity." and "We need people in our problem solving. We need people in our products." She closes with the central message of her book: "Hope is a habit… it is the single greatest predictor of success and health." Forget the “new year, new you” slogans. We trade hype for honesty and design a year that actually fits your values and energy. We start by reframing 2025 with a pride audit: the tough moments you handled with more grace, the people you helped, and the places you chose integrity over convenience. That grounding matters because leaders often spot gaps faster than growth, and without pride, we keep chasing the next milestone without ever arriving. From there, we run a clean truth audit—no shame, just ownership. What did you call important but never scheduled? Which habits drained your best energy? We unpack the long game and why consistency beats intensity. Drawing on Atomic Habits, we shift from outcome obsession to identity and systems: the real flex is the small habit you don't break. We explore the math of compounding and the mindset that keeps you steady when motivation fades. We also bring in a powerful lens on courage from Emmy-winning broadcaster and author Anne-Marie Anderson. Audacity isn't recklessness; it's aligned, season-aware boldness. You'll define one brave Q1 swing, then make it practical with the Three Wins Weekly framework—one win for work, one for health, one for relationships—and protect them with time blocks that match your natural rhythms. Add Michael Bungay Stanier's minimum viable start to break inertia, and layer Brendan Burchard's daily intentionality so you show up how your team needs: curious, inspiring, or decisive. We close with a tight 2026 plan: choose a compass word, pick three outcomes, build weekly systems and accountability, and lock in that audacious move.Ready to stop living by default and start living by design? Subscribe, share this with a colleague who needs a reset, and tell us your 2026 theme and your one bold swing. In this episode of The Ross Simmonds Show, Ross gets real about what culture truly is inside an organization. Spoiler alert: it's not your values deck, your company retreats, or the catchphrases painted on your office walls. Culture is what your team experiences—and that starts with leadership. Ross unpacks how the most problematic leadership habits quietly become the blueprint of a company's culture. Through personal insights and actionable advice, this episode challenges leaders to reflect on their behaviors, confront their blind spots, and align their habits with the culture they aspire to create. Key Takeaways and Insights: 1. Culture Is Practiced, Not Preached - Culture isn't your onboarding slide deck or a nicely printed poster—it's what your company does every single day. - If you claim a value (e.g. empathy, growth, candor), but your actions contradict it, then it's not part of your real culture. 2. Leadership Habits Define Team Norms - “Your culture is a reflection of your worst leadership habits.” - Leaders unintentionally shape culture through the behaviors and patterns they tolerate or exhibit. 3. The Toxic Impact of Avoidance - Avoiding hard conversations or decision-making can silently simmer into dysfunction. - Leaders need to have the courage to confront their personal weaknesses to positively affect culture. 4. Build Muscle Memory for Better Leadership - If giving feedback or staying focused is hard, start building systems and routines that reinforce those behaviors. - Example: “Pursue the awkward” moments to grow stronger in them. 5. Self-Awareness Is Crucial - Ask critical questions as a leader: Am I consistent? Do I finish what I start? Am I a source of clarity or chaos? - Teams watch leaders' actions more than they listen to their words. Walk matters more than talk. 6. Cultivate Culture by Fixing Yourself First - Introspective leadership is the foundation of thriving workplace culture. - Practical step: Make a list of personal habits that are out of alignment with your company's stated values and strategize ways to improve. 7. Leadership Isn't About Titles - You don't need to be a CEO or founder to lead with intentionality. - Cultural influence can come from any level within an organization—or your life. —

How do you rebuild your life when everyone thinks they already know your story? How do you stay sharp and influential when every move you make is judged and dissected? In this episode of Habits & Hustle, I sit down with Jordan Belfort, the real-life inspiration behind Martin Scorsese's acclaimed film The Wolf of Wall Street based on his bestselling autobiography. We get into the mindset behind high-stakes decisions, the psychology of influence, and how he built a system that turns underdogs into top performers. Jordan talks about rebuilding credibility, the habits that keep him steady now, and what extreme pressure taught him about discipline. He breaks down what persuasive leaders actually do differently and why charisma alone never gets you there. If you want a sharper understanding of communication, conviction, and reinvention, this one will land. Jordan Belfort is an entrepreneur, bestselling author, global sales trainer, and creator of the Straight Line System. After rising fast, falling hard, and rebuilding his life from the ground up, he has become one of the most recognizable thinkers in sales psychology, persuasion, and personal reinvention today. Most people don't fail because they lack motivation or ambition. They fail because they're trying to win the year with willpower instead of systems. Setting big goals, feeling fired up in January, and then wondering by February why the momentum disappeared. What finally changed everything for me wasn't more goals. It was one habit. Then another. And suddenly, success stopped feeling forced and started feeling inevitable. In this solo episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, I break down why habits beat goals every single time and how you can use two specific habits to make 2026 your most aligned, productive, and fulfilling year yet. This isn't theory. It's a simple, repeatable process rooted in behavioral science, real-life experience, and what I've seen work consistently for high-performing entrepreneurs who actually follow through. No guest this time, just me pulling back the curtain on the exact habit framework I use to create momentum in both my personal life and business. This episode matters because most people are doing goal-setting backwards. Statistically, over 80% of goals are abandoned by February, not because people don't care, but because goals rely on motivation while habits rewire identity. Habits are responsible for nearly half of our daily behavior, and when you focus on systems instead of outcomes, long-term success becomes two to three times more likely. If you're tired of setting intentions that never stick, this conversation will hit home. One of the biggest takeaways is the shift from goal setting to habit building. Goals excite your ego, but habits train your nervous system. Instead of obsessing over outcomes, you choose micro-actions that make success unavoidable. When you commit to the habit, the result takes care of itself. You don't rise to the level of your goals—you fall to the level of your habits.Another key lesson is the power of simplifying your focus. One personal habit. One professional habit. That's it. For your personal life, I recommend a non-negotiable morning alignment routine—30 to 60 minutes, five days a week, before the world gets a vote. For your professional life, it's a daily impact block—around 90 minutes of focused, uninterrupted work that compounds revenue, relationships, or impact. When you win the morning and protect your impact block, everything else starts to align. The episode also dives into identity-based habits. Consistency beats intensity every time. When you keep small promises to yourself daily, you start seeing yourself as someone who follows through—and that identity drives behavior automatically. Environment matters too. Your surroundings either reinforce your habits or sabotage them, so removing friction and temptation is part of the work. One of the most important pieces I share is accountability and consequence. Habits stick when there's something at stake. That might be a financial penalty, an accountability partner, or a rule that rewards only come after the habit is complete. When you attach real consequences to inaction, discipline stops being optional. At the end of the day, 2026 doesn't need more pressure, more grind, or more resolutions. It needs alignment. It needs you to keep your word to yourself. One personal habit. One professional habit. Done consistently. That's how you build momentum, confidence, and a life you actually love living. If you want the full breakdown, the science, the stories, and the exact framework I use to make habits stick, listen to the full episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast.
