As you hear in the intro, he provides a significant perspective on the concept of what we'd say is doing the right thing, but relating it to our very tangible self interest. If flies in the face of authoritative leadership and management principles the corporate world was originally based on. Which of course is why his story of taking Chipotle from its humble beginnings to it's meteoric success is so intriguing. Also in this episode you'll hear him discuss his habits for mental health. He said he often wakes, feeling the weight of the world on his shoulders, and like a failure. Which is interesting for a guy who seems so successful, don't you think? Would you feel like a failure if you were worth three or four hundred million dollars? Monty shares how he strives to practice compassion on himself. He says he tries to make friends with his feelings, and when he wakes with foreboding, to, “Hold my own troubles in a kind and accepting way.” Here is an offering from Monty, if you go to loveisfree.com you can buy his book, Love Is Free, Guac Is Extra,” and he'll write whatever you want in it and send it to you. Last month marked the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Two weeks after that tragic day, The Onion, the famed comedy newspaper, put out an issue with jokes about 9/11. How did they do that? Scott Dikkers, one of The Onion's founders teaches us how. His rule is that comedy is meant to “afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.” That's why they put out that issue. To comfort the afflicted. As physicians, that's what we do! How can we be funny, even in the face of tragedy? Mr. Dikkers teaches comedy writing and has turned what seems unteachable into a science. He has described funny filters and all comedy fits into one of those filters. He teaches us which are the best for the exam room, how to recover from a failed joke, how to work humor into our office visits and lectures, and what jokes comedians can't use, but we can!   Scott Dikkers founded the world's first humor website, TheOnion.com, in 1996. A few years earlier he helped found the original Onion newspaper. He's served as The Onion's owner and editor-in-chief, on and off, for much of the last quarter century.  He led The Onion's rise from small, unknown college humor publication to internationally respected comedy brand.  He is also a New York Times best seller, and Peabody Award winner.  He documented his process for creating humor in his book, How to Write Funny, and the second in the series, How to Write Funnier, and next on the way, How to Write Funniest, which are the basis of the Writing with The Onion program he created and teaches at The Second City Training Center in Chicago. You are forming habits all the time, whether passively or actively. So in a way, your life is a compilation of your habits. The question is: what kind of habits are we forming? And can we actually form habits that fortify our faith and help us grow in Christlikeness? Many of us hear the word “habit”, and we apply the concept to things like working out or washing our faces before bed. Or maybe we primarily think of “bad” habits, like the habit of biting your nails when you're bored or anxious; the habit of reaching for your phone when you're waiting in line; or the habit of binge eating sweets when you're stressed. But can “good” habits be cultivated with the aim of growing our faith? Why should this idea of habits be related to spiritual things at all?   Habits mean automation. It means we don't have to invest as much energy and thought into doing something. When we put it that way, we can easily see how habits can be beneficial for our spiritual lives. Think about it: when you cultivate the habit of remembering God's faithfulness, you're going to find yourself calling that truth to mind when your life circumstances want to convince you that God has forsaken you. When you cultivate the habit of trusting in God to provide, you're going to refrain from despairing when you hit a rough patch.   So what can we practically do to form these habits of faith? Today, we are joined by Jen Pollock Michel. Jen wrote the book A Habit Called Faith. Jen helps us see how habits impact our lives, and she offers practical advice so that we can form good habits that can help us grow in godliness. You can find Jen on Instagram at @jenpmichel and at her website (click here).   Here are some questions we work through in this episode:     What impact do habits have on our lives in general? (3:34) How might the impact of forming habits carry over into growing in faith? (5:57) What are some habits that believers can form to help us grow in Christlikeness? (8:50) What are some practical things we can do to start forming these habits in our lives? (13:08) What are some bad habits that might inhibit our growth, and how can we break them? (20:07) Why is the habit of Bible study particularly important for our faith? (28:49) How can we work toward building a Bible study habit when we don't feel motivated? Listeners are encouraged to listen to Laura's TEDx talk to learn more about leadership and empathy in the workplace. [11:48] Learning empathy: Everyone receives feedback differently and wants constructive criticism differently. [18:29] Facilitating teamwork can be achieved by having team norms that are agreed upon, making it easier to note and address behaviors that don't align. [24:06] Your view has to change as you go higher in your career because you can now empathize with younger professionals, having faced similar challenges. Rather than judge them, accept the work they do even if you may have done it differently, as long as the goals were achieved. [29:13] Current changes in the Healthcare industry: Bringing digital tools into the clinical space is a major ongoing development, with particular consideration given to ensure these digital tools are very accessible to patients. [32:57] Listeners with interest or opportunities in healthcare are encouraged to be bold, be brave and apply for healthcare jobs; even without a background in healthcare, there are translatable skills. [36:10] The 'STAR' Interviewing method: When asked behavioral-type questions, follow the STAR method (Situation Task, Action, Result) as this helps you respond concisely to meet all parameters being evaluated by the question. [39:50] Best career advice: What's the worst that could happen, take risks, be bold. [40:32] Choose your attitude: How do you think you're showing up, what does the best you look like today? [42:32] Habits that contribute to success when leading projects: Have a questioning mindset and imbibe this in your team. The 7-second rule: when you ask a question, you need to pause and count for 7 seconds because that allows time and space for the introverts to answer. This also helps keep a continuous feedback loop to be sure you're in the right direction. [44:14] Mobile website recommendation: LinkedIn, Newsfeeds, [46:31] A professional society recommendation: A.C.H.E (American College of Healthcare Executives) [47:21] Book recommendation: “Dare to Lead” by Brené Brown. [51:36] Final advice from Laura: We have to remember that we can only control our own thoughts and reactions, we can't control those of other people. How do you want to be perceived? Work on your emotional intelligence so that your intents and perceptions match. Using Capitalize to Rollover Retirement Savings Bevin and Gaurav Sharma

On this episode of Financially Naked: Stories from The Financial Gym, our host is Bevin Morgan, a Lexington-based Financial Trainer, and she is joined by the CEO and co-founder of Capitalize, Gaurav Sharma. They are going to talk about the importance of rolling over legacy retirement accounts and how Capitalize makes it easy. Gaurav Sharma is CEO and Co-Founder of Capitalize, a venture-backed fintech company focused on helping people save for retirement. Before founding Capitalize, he worked for some of the best-known financial institutions, including JP Morgan, UBS, Morgan Stanley, and as an investor at well-known hedge fund Greenlight Capital. An Australian by birth, Gaurav lives in New York City with his family.    Podcast Notes Capitalize is a fintech company that uses technology to make saving for retirement in the United States easier and more accessible to everyone.  With most retirement savings being linked to our employers, there are many flaws in the system. One of the biggest being the obvious, we often switch employers after a couple of years.  The process of rolling over a 401k is antiquated. Some folks don't even know where the money is in their legacy accounts, making the process seem intimidating.    This is where Capitalize comes in! They are helping people find lost assets and invest them well.   They do this by digitizing the process of finding misplaced retirement savings and helping clients submit rollover requests. This makes the process very simple, even if you don't know where your money is currently. This service is FREE to the client. How does Capitalize work? They first help the consumer by finding old accounts. Even if you don't know the brokerage, Capitalize has built a database that maps employers to 401k brokers.  Then they help them decide where to move the money and why. There is a lot of confusion about the best account to move legacy accounts. Some common questions are: ‘what kind of account should I pick?' or ‘What platform is best suited for my goals?'  They help clients navigate the decision with an online comparison experience. Based on the info provided by the client, they will give a few great options AND help compare. After the client has chosen the account, Capitalize then helps the user open it.  They then help with the most challenging part. Each provider has their own rules and requirements for rollovers which makes the process very cumbersome and sometimes confusing. What Capitalize has done is digitize this last step. They know how to process these various rollovers and help the client submit the request to the legacy provider. If it requires human intervention, Capitalize has a fully licensed customer service team to handle these circumstances.  It is an end to end experience. Capitalize will help from start to finish AND it is completely FREE for the client. Some Staggering Estimates about Legacy Retirement Funds  There are $700 billion (with a B) worth of rollovers to potentially process each year, affecting 15 million people.   There's an estimated 24 million forgotten 401k accounts in the US with $1.35 trillion (with a T)  worth of assets in them.  These figures come from research done with The Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. Check out this blog post for more info: The True Cost of Forgotten 401(k) Accounts – CapitalizeWHY CAPITALIZE IS REVOLUTIONARY    Consolidating legacy accounts is an important first step in saving for retirement. Bevin recommended the service to one of her clients who found out they had $24,000 in these kinds of accounts, which Gaurav points out has the potential to grow exponentially if invested well.   Capitalize is a platform to help people manage employer-sponsored retirement accounts. Even though the system is far from perfect, employer accounts aren't going away any time soon. There is a need for easy management as people tend to change employers every few years. This is the first platform to really do this work!  People who are self-employed or have other kinds of investment accounts (such as 403b accounts) are welcome at CapitalizeA LITTLE MORE ABOUT GAURAV As you can tell from the great accent, Gaurav grew up in Australia.  He studied abroad in the US while in college.  After returning home, he realized there was so much about the United States he liked and wanted to move here to start his business after graduating.  He worked on Wall Street in 2008, amidst the biggest financial meltdown in 80 years, with a focus on advising banks and financial institutions.  From there, he transitioned into the investment world. There he learned that wealthy folks have the access to the best resources and tools. This should not be the reality and there is an opportunity to serve people at levels of finance. This was a motivator behind starting the company, Capitalize.  He wanted to make finance less intimidating and more accessible, which is exactly what we at the gym are passionate about and love to hear!  Questions from Bevin:  Best financial advice you've ever gotten? Keep it simple. (When it comes to investing) You often feel like you should be doing more, but in reality, the simplest approach has stood the test of time. Hands off, participate in the market growing over time and get the basics right. You can grow and compound without having to stress about it daily.  What do you want to do when you retire? Gaurav personally doesn't have the goal of retiring early, or even at all. He enjoys all of his work and pursuits but hopes to be able to travel more in the future while continuing to do this work and have more great conversations with amazing folks like Bevin. They are when you actually don't want to do the thing you think you want to do and when you are unaware or unclear of the benefit you are getting from the current behavior.  Avital Miller is an Alternative Healer. Forgiveness is a productivity accelerator. As Robin Sharma wrote about in The 5AM Club, everyone alive does the best that they can based on where they're at in terms of their awareness and their understanding of life. And once you realize that, you won't be upset with them - you can begin to forgive them.So resolve to forgive those who have hurt you [they made you stronger and more noble]. And commit to letting go of what no longer serves you [it got you to here]. Remember that the past was perfect preparation for you to become who you now are and to grow the extraordinary life that you now face the opportunity to create. Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

"It doesn't matter how slowly you go, just do not stop just do your best to STAY ON THE PATH." Jen Grant joins MG on today's episode, and they revisit the last episode (before the John Assaraf special), THE QUEST! If we can agree on Oprah's observation that the great adventure—the quest—is to live the life of your dreams, then the question becomes, HOW is that accomplished? How can anyone pursue the life of their dreams? It turns out that the answer to this all-important question can be found within another question: "Are you on the path?" In other words, it's hard to pursue any journey—any great quest—if you're not first ON THE PATH. It's a simple, powerful, and fundamental question: "Are you ON THE PATH?" Do not pass Go. The only way any person can achieve the life of their dreams is one single day at a time. Thus, the ONE question they should ask themselves each day is, "Was I on the path today?" When the answer is "YES" more days than not, you are very likely to realize your own "great adventure." However, the idea isn't to beat yourself up if you realize that you are not on THE PATH. Rather, it's simply an important awareness so that you can adjust your daily actions and behaviors in order to get on THE PATH as quickly as possible. The significance of this truth comes to light when you realize the power of intentionally creating good, supportive habits, TODAY—the habits that put you on THE PATH—to help ensure that they keep you on THE PATH tomorrow. The conversation boils down to a simple litmus test—one question— everyone should ask before retiring at night. Enjoy the episode! How much do you really know about habits and goals?
