Aug. 30, 2014. Jack Gantos appears at the 2014 Library of Congress National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. Speaker Biography: The creator of such beloved characters as Rotten Ralph and Joey Pigza, Jack Gantos received the Newbery Medal in 2012 for "Dead End in Norvelt," which features a 12-year-old boy named Jack Gantos. Several of Gantos" other works and characters are also based on his life, such as Rotten Ralph, an aggressive cat he had as a pet. "A Hole in My Life" is an inspirational book that has helped many teenage boys in trouble. Gantos' new book is "The Key That Swallowed Joey Pigza" (Farrar, Straus & Giroux/Macmillan). His family then moved to Florida, and in the sixth grade, he started a diary and began his life as a writer. He is well known for his "Joey Pigza" and "Rotten Ralph" series of books. His new book is "Dead End in Norvelt" (Farrar, Straus & Giroux), and he is also one of the writers of "The Exquisite Corpse Adventure," an original story written for the Library of Congress' Read.gov website and now a book from Candlewick. The Jack Henry middle-grade fiction series was based on Gantos' own adventures as a boy, and the award-winning Joey Pigza books resulted from Gantos' interactions with children with ADHD. Hole in My Life, a book for teens, tells the true story of the time Gantos spent 18 months in prison.
