Prophecy Radio: A Percy Jackson Podcast

Prophecy Radio episode #68 dives into the connection between astrology and Greek mythology—specifically talking about the stories behind the zodiac signs. Plus, we talk about all the latest news in the Riordanverse, including the fact that Zeus and Poseidon have finally been cast in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, as well as read and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 22. After this, there's only one more chapter to go! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:01:36) Mark gives us some stats on their signing of The Sun and the Star. Is Rick a doodler? We're not so sure he is… It's Nico di Angelo's birthday! This article made us realize we forgot an important detail about his sister, Bianca. Read Riordan answers the question—What exactly ARE the whimsies? Don't forget that Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee comes out on February 7! Rick teases a possible blooper reel, and we are HERE for it. Midgard Times (of all places) lets us know about the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians filming end date. And yes, it's now finally time to talk about Rick's January 26 blog post, aka the place where we finally get to meet Zeus and Poseidon. We wonder why they don't announce actors until after they're done filming? We definitely know Lance Reddick from a few places, and he's gonna make an awesome Zeus. And Toby Stephens? We just learned a VERY interesting fact about him this morning. We might be a little less familiar with him, but you can't deny he looks like he's gonna be an awesome Poseidon. We wonder which demigods won't show up in season 1. Will Argus be completely CGI in the show? Astrology and Greek mythology (00:32:28) First, we've got to talk about the Babylonians. Did you know there were originally about 17 or 18 constellations in the zodiac? Aries was first associated with a shepherd, and then later with the ram. Even the Egyptians kept this meaning, which they associated with Amon-Ra (no relation to the football player). Everything comes back to Percy Jackson, which is excellent news for us, a Percy Jackson podcast. Taurus is tied to the spring equinox, which leads down some interesting paths that we are choosing not to explore too deeply. We're already noticing a pattern with Herakles… Moving into Gemini, we meet Castor and Pollux, which are a pair of names you've probably heard before, even if you aren't familiar with the mythological origins. Cancer seems to be a bit of a newer constellation. Surprise, surprise, Herakles is once again involved in this one. Have you read Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons? The constellation of Leo has been associated with the lion for a long time and amongst many different cultures. We never knew Hera was the Oprah of constellations. Unfortunately for Kristen specifically, the stories behind Virgo and Libra are very confusing. Demeter, Astraea, Dike, and Persephone are all possible players in this game. We try to puzzle out how all of these figures are associated with the zodiac and it breaks our brains a little bit. Kristen keeps making How I Met Your Mother references and they go right over Karen's head. In case you were wondering, this is NOT a Brooklyn Nine-Nine podcast. Scorpio's myth is pretty straight forward. Babylonia probably saw more scorpions than jellyfish. The god Nergal from Babylonian mythology is somehow even stranger than Chiron and his human legs. There were simply no constellations before Herakles. It seems Capricorn has always been a goat-fish. Okay, it feels a little TOO convenient that Pan could just grow a fishtail to escape. No matter how you spin it, Aquarius is associated with flooding. This sign is also associated with Ganymede, who we'll meet in Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods. There are so many things we're just gonna skip over. Shapeshifting was a PLAGUE back in the day, apparently. We go on a WHOLE journey about ichthyocentaurs and Camp Fish-Blood. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (01:14:40) Let's talk about The Last Olympian chapter 22. Rainbow came to visit, and we're so happy!! How did Rachel get into Camp Half-Blood unscathed? And why wasn't Chiron more concerned about Rachel's fate!? Do you think they'll push Rachel's story to earlier in the TV series in case we don't get a Heroes of Olympus series? The Great Prophecy is officially Prophecy Count #32! The memorials were super sad and beautiful at the same time. We're so happy Nico got the credit and acceptance he deserves!! Annabeth and Tyson have come such a long way as friends!! We kind of wish we had a bit more Percabeth at the end here. Rick is CRUEL for naming this chapter “I Am Dumped.” How did neither one of us pick “And it was pretty much the best underwater kiss of all time”!? The end of this chapter is just so ICONIC. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 69, where we'll have a chat with J. Maya about music—both her own and what she'd like to see in the show. Prophecy Radio: A Percy Jackson Podcast

Prophecy Radio episode #67 discusses The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure chapter 1, which can be found in the back of the “Percy Jackson and the Sword of Hades” re-release. Plus, we talk about all the latest news in the Riordanverse, including the Last Canto of the Dead cover reveal, as well as read and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 21. We're so close to the end of the book now! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News (00:01:38) Happy birthday to Magnus Chase and Daniel José Older! Did you see the Last Canto of the Dead cover and synopsis reveal? This book is gonna be amazing. Read Riordan also gives us a tourist's guide to Tartarus. They also break down the Rick Riordan Presents new releases of 2023, and we discuss which titles are missing from the list. J.C. Cervantes announces her adult debut, The Enchanted Hacienda. Paola Santiago is getting translated into Spanish! Rick answers some more Goodreads questions. Maze of Bones (39 Clues) is being turned into a graphic novel! Make sure you're checking Rick's Mastodon because he's been sharing some updates! The Sun and the Star chapter 1 (00:21:44) We discuss Nico's choice to go on a date with…Darth Vader!? There's gonna be a BIG decision Nico will need to make in this book, mark our words. We absolutely love everything about Solangelo, and we can definitely feel Mark's fingerprints all over this. Our hunch is that the Gray Sisters will be significant later in the story. We kind of love that this book is not going to be about saving the world. Who wants to bet we're going to tackle a lot of mental health issues in The Sun and the Star? Will probably has a lot to deal with as well, and we're curious where this will lead. What ghosts do we think Nico will come up against in this book? When will we get to hear the prophecy!? Everything's gonna be fine…right? We really loved this first chapter, even if it feels like an anvil hanging over our heads. Why doesn't he acknowledge that the voice belongs to Bob in this chapter? What are our plans when The Sun and the Star comes out? Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:53:56) Let's talk about The Last Olympian chapter 21. The Mist is so interesting, and we theorize where it came from and who might control it. What did we think of Percy's apology, and Hermes' choice to let Luke walk his own path? Good job delivering Annabeth's apology to Percy, Hermes. *eye roll* In the end, did Luke love his father? Can the gods change their natures? Quick, what do Percy Jackson, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Doctor Who have in common? Would you rather see a Percy Jackson story set in the future or the past? Can you IMAGINE having Athena as your mother? Ares has got nothing on her. Sally trying to get up to Olympus in one breath and admonishing Paul for wanting the same in the next will never not be hilarious. We still can't stop imagining Paul Rudd as Paul Blofis. Becky gives us some clues as to why there might be a difference in the signal Zeus puts out to tell Sally that Percy is okay. Karen definitely thought Blackjack was gonna get buff. We're so ready for some answers about Rachel Elizabeth Dare! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 68, where we'll discuss some constellations and how they may relate to Greek myths. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #66 returns from our mini-hiatus to catch you up on all the news we missed while we were away. We're talking about The Sun and the Star, Rick Riordan Presents, Percy Jackson and the Olymjpians, and much, MUCH more. Plus, we read and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 20, which contains one of the most iconic scenes in the entire series. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News Roundup (00:04:49) We're back! We had a nice little break, but we're super excited to jump back into Prophecy Radio and catch up on all the news we missed while we were away. We're totally going to keep talking about Greek mythology and Percy Jackson, even as we start in on The Red Pyramid. Let's kick this off by wishing both Thalia Grace (December 22) and Walker Scobell (January 5) a happy, happy birthday. We're so happy that everyone on set seems optimistic about getting more seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Did you see the stunt video that Alex Kyshkovych posted of Walker training for The Adam Project? Read Riordan posted some New Year's resolutions from the gods and demigods, as it's super cute! Except for that last part about Gaea. We find that highly suspicious. Karen has some qualms with their article about the five most underrated demigods, but she finds peace by the end of the discussion. As always, when we see a quiz, we've gotta take it! How did we do on the Rick Riordan Presents quotes quiz? Have you seen the cover to Dawn of the Jaguar by J.C. Cervantes? We're also very excited about Fox Snare, the conclusion to the Thousand Worlds trilogy by Yoon Ha Lee. It's so awesome that Daughter of the Deep is still on the New York Times bestselling books list. Becky has some stuff to say about Chalice of the Gods. Don't forget to pick up The Sword of Hades and get that sneak peek of The Sun and the Star. Karen took some SERIOUS notes about Mark Oshiro's Instagram takeover for Macmillan, so buckle in and made sure you pre-order Into the Light before March 28! We're counting down the days until Mark writes a Rick Riordan Presents book! We really loved the picture of Mark and Rick meeting for the first time. How could you not be jealous about Mark witnessing Rick's process and brilliance firsthand?? Why does Nico mean so much to Mark Oshiro? It's not too much to hope that because this process went so smoothly that we could get books for other characters, right? How crazy is the end of The Sun and the Star going to be!? Rick found it very important to make Will a big part of this book, and we are so excited about that. Do you think Nico is a…snake person!? Keep your eye out for more announcements from Mark soon! Walker confirmed there's only three more weeks of filming after they return from their break. Do we REALLY think the show's release date could be late 2023? Logan Lerman talks about how talented Walker Scobell is. If you're interested, here's a link to the Esquire article about him as well. Becky has some really good things to say about Alexandra Daddario and actors in general. And this article from Sydney Morning Herald was also very good. And that's what you missed on Prophecy Radio! Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (01:28:52) We're talking about The Last Olympian chapter 20. This chapter is kind of a big deal, and there's a reason why so many people reference it all the time. Why did the Fates remove Luke's body?? Is this a big honor? That bit with the string from The Lightning Thief totally blows our minds. Is this conformation that Percy will grow old!? Will Hermes be able to help May now that the prophecy has been fulfilled? In your copy of the book, does Zeus fly a flag or light up the top of the Empire State Building? We love that both Hades and Nico were welcomed into Olympus as heroes. Why doesn't anyone stand up to Ares and talk about the fact that he's physically abusive to Clarisse? Karen has issues with the scene where Dionysus talks about Zeus reducing his sentence. Poor Grover is feeling so sad, and we hate it! You get a gift! And you get a gift! And YOU get a gift! Grover has had so much growth over these last five books. Hades isn't even ashamed he's the one who told Percy about making them swear on the River Styx. Percy really covered ALL the bases when it comes to his request. Would Sally have been upset if Percy had become a god, or would she have been relieved she wouldn't have to worry about him anymore? Thank goodness Athena spoke up on Percy's behalf. Percy is officially a Hero of Olympus. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 67, where we'll discuss The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure chapter 1. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #65 takes a look at both the Lightning Thief illustrated edition, as well as the graphic novel. We're once again skipping the news as we take a little break for the holidays, but we'll be back next week to catch you up on everything you missed. And don't worry! We're still going to reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 19. We're getting close to the end now! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. The Lightning Thief illustrated edition/graphic novel (00:01:12) Let's jump right into discussing Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief Illustrated Edition, which was published in 2018 and illustrated by John Rocco. We really liked John's dedication in the back of the book. It's so sad there are no current plans for more, but maybe the TV show will change that! Who doesn't love a map in the front of a book!? We're super impressed by all of the illustrations, big and small. Did they accidentally spoil Percy's godly parentage at the end of chapter 1? Unlike most other depictions of him, Chiron is actually a white stallion in the illustrated edition! Are we disappointed we can't see Ares' motorcycle seat made of human skin?? The official merchandise HAS to include a ballpoint pen. If those little mechanical spiders were meant to be a jump-scare, they worked! How beautiful was that sea spirit who gave Percy the pearls!? The way they placed certain characters on the page, like Procrustes and Zeus and Poseidon, was super impactful. Clarisse is SO TALL in that Capture the Flag illustration. Being compared to Gabe is NOT a compliment. The scenes that take place in the Underworld are so iconic. What did we think of the actual style of art that John Rocco brought to the page? Now it's time to switch over to Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief: The Graphic Novel. We compare the art in each book, and whether the styles are at odds. We go through all the differences between the book and the graphic novel, according to the Fandom website. Most of these are understandable, but a few of them were a little surprising. The Trio looks SO much older in the graphic novel, but Kristen has an idea as to why that may be. Seeing so much of the Lotus Hotel was pretty cool! We hope the show makes the Olympian thrones really individualized and cool. Okay, but why is Grover so hot at the end of the graphic novel!? There are some scenes that were MADE for this format. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:39:11) We're talking about The Last Olympian chapter 19. This is the biggest of the biggest chapters, but that makes sense considering this is the climax of the whole book. Rick's writing is so cinematic, and this book is a testament to that. What do we think about Hera's curse coming into play at the end here? Luke smiling at Annabeth is like Void Stiles smiling at Scott. Grover playing his reed pipes and growing grass was surprisingly helpful. Is Aryan going to take reed pipe lessons!? We totally get why people like Ethan Nakamura so much, even after everything he did. Would you read a standalone novel about Ethan? Did you envision Typhon the way he's described in the book? We got GOOSEBUMPS when Poseidon and Tyson showed up. We're glad Annabeth got so many moments in this chapter! Hestia also has some time to shine, and it's all so significant. Rick is a genius. Does it make sense that Annabeth's knife was the cursed blade? Okay, let's talk about that moment where Luke asks Annabeth if she loved him. Did Luke deserve to go to Elysium? Thank GOODNESS we have a few more chapters to wrap up this book. Feedback (01:20:52) A Positive Guy lets us know just how much he loves the illustrated edition. Prophecy Radio: A Percy Jackson Podcast

Prophecy Radio episode #64 takes a look ahead at all the projects we know are coming up in 2023, as well as our goals for the year as a podcast! This week, we're skipping the news since we're recording ahead of time, and we'll catch up on that in a couple weeks. But don't worry! We're still going to reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 18. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. Looking ahead to 2023 (00:02:07) On January 10, The Sword of Hades will be re-released with a The Sun and the Star sneak peek. Are you going to pre-order it? One of the biggest books to come out this year will be The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro, which will release on May 2. Here's everything we know about The Sun and the Star so far. We speculate what we might get when we read Chalice of the Gods, which comes out on September 26. And let's not forget the Rick Riordan Presents imprint! What books can we look forward to in 2023? First up on the list is Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee, who will be releasing her first book under RRP. We loved Ballad & Dagger, so it should come as no surprise that Last Canto of the Dead by Daniel José Older is at the top of our lists for 2023. Next up, we have The Last Fallen Realm by Graci Kim, which will wrap up the Gifted Clans series. Roshani Chokshi is writing another book for RRP, this time about Filipino mythology! Obviously we can't wait for the second book in the Serwa Boateng series by Roseanne A. Brown. And maybe it won't be the last! We really need to read City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda…if only so we can read Fury of the Dragon Goddess. This fall, we can also expect Pahua and the Dragon's Secret by Lori M. Lee to hit store shelves. Moko Magic by Tracey Baptiste also promises to be great, and we wonder if there will be any similarities to Ballad & Dagger. And even though we haven't covered the books yet on the podcast, we're excited for the next book in the Shadow Bruja series by J.C. Cervantes. Many of the Rick Riordan Presents authors have OTHER books coming out outside of the imprint. Which ones are we most looking forward to? First up, Roshani Chokshi gives us a Valentine's Day treat with The Last Tale of the Flower Bride. And then there's Tehlor Kay Mejia's Lucha of the Night Forest, out on March 21. And then there's Into the Light by Mark Oshiro, which has mushrooms on the cover, so you know it's going to be cool. What announcements for Percy Jackson and the Olympians do we think we'll get in 2023? They have to tell us who Zeus and Poseidon are eventually, right?? Could we get a trailer by the end of the year? Will Percy Jackson attend SDCC? Will they be at D23 again? What if they did monster reveals!? Make sure you check out Aryan's show on Paramount+, Adventures in Wonder Park. When could we expect a season 2 greenlight? As far as the Red Pyramid film coming to Netflix, we can probably expect the script to be finished. But we know it's not coming out in 2023, so we need to be patient! What about a director? Or any casting announcements? What's Prophecy Radio hoping to accomplish next year? We want to bring as many exclusives to you as we possibly can! But we're super excited to start The Kane Chronicles. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:54:52) We're talking about The Last Olympian chapter 18. How can Clarisse survive being turned into a block of ice? Chiron standing in between Kronos and Mount Olympus is pretty badass. Annabeth gave it a good old college try, but it just wasn't enough. How could you not LOVE AND RESPECT Nico di Angelo until the ends of the Earth after this scene?? Seeing Demeter and Persephone in action was pretty cool. And speaking of badasses—Paul and Sally can totally handle their own! Why does Ethan Nakamura have such a place of honor amongst Kronos' army? We need more fanart from the Battle of Manhattan! Feedback (01:19:49) A positive guy says he's really looking forward to Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem and Fury of the Dragon Goddess. Meanwhile, Phoebe's got her heart set on The Sun and the Star. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 65, where we'll discuss the Lightning Thief illustrated edition, as well as the graphic novel! Hi everyone! Two years already, can you believe it? To celebrate this, Jordanne from the 'Books To Last' Podcast and I put together a very cool episode for you where we compare different book covers from around the world! If you want to follow along with us, here is the link to the presentation that we are referencing: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1ugEwX83KWB3XZ5Kf86RQyo0bpd7R_d4XrHl4bOMk6mc/edit?usp=sharing You will find the main slides with the grey header and also additional context on the slides in between (I did not hide them in the end because I don't think you would have been able to see them then). Come check out Jordanne over on all her channels: https://jordannedunn.carrd.co And take a look at her latest episode about her very first book panel: https://open.spotify.com/episode/3TpsW8C6UGjFr4EMT1EpEF For everyone who is interested, this is the article I mentioned about the cover design of 'Three Dark Crowns': https://www.epicreads.com/blog/three-dark-crowns-cover-design/ Editing this episode I have to admit I caved and bought the first book in the Taiwanese version. I don't entertain the prospect of ever being able to read it, but a girl can dream and look at the cover while doing so ;) And while you are merrily being entertained by book covers, do yourself a favour and search for all of the Harry Potter Thailand editions, each installment is just a masterpiece in itself. I hope you have just as much fun with this episode as Jordanne and I had :) My Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/childofthelibrary My StoryGraph: https://app.thestorygraph.com/profile/child_of_the_library_podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/childofthelibrary/ Email: childofthelibrary@gmail.com

Prophecy Radio episode #63 takes a look back on the last year to reminisce about all the announcements we witnessed and all we've accomplished in 2022! We also talk about the most recent news in the Riordanverse, including the livestream and the winner of our art giveaway, as well as reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 17. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:45) Thank you to everyone who tuned into the Percy Jackson for Good Winter Solstice Fundraiser! We let you know what kind of content to expect from us in the coming weeks. Shoutout to @JessycaJill, who won our art giveaway, and to @Hellredsky, for working with us on that! Graci Kim's tweet from the other day was bittersweet, and we take a moment to recognize all she's accomplished. Read Riordan also gave us some tips for how to throw a Camp Half-Blood-themed holiday party. End of the year round-up and reflection (00:10:26) Once again we really love that we switched over to one chapter an episode. We're very proud of our episode titles, but which ones are our favorites? What's the most interesting thing we learned in our pursuit of increasing our knowledge of mythology? Our memories are so bad, but we did think of a couple fun facts we enjoyed learning. And it's not just Greek mythology that fascinated us! The books Karen was talking about were Skin of the Sea and Soul of the Deep by Natasha Bowen. It's so hard to pick a favorite interview since everyone has been lovely, and we managed to talk about pretty much all of them. In particular, make sure you go back and listen to our chat with Roseanne A. Brown and Roshani Chokshi but also Daniel José Older. There are so many talented people in the Percy Jackson fandom, but we have to shout-out a couple of our favorite artists we've discovered this year. There's definitely been an Annabeth Chase art renaissance, and we are so here for it. All of the Sun and the Star artwork has been incredible, but a special shout-out to @AlessiaTrunfio (Kristen's choice picks: here and here). Obviously Sarah (@Hellredsky) is one of our favorites, and Soia also has a special place in our hearts. And how could we forget about @Velinxi. Were you as surprised by the length of our longest episode as we were? What about our shortest episode? Did we ever get under an hour? We got a lot of big announcements this year, but which ones stick out in our minds the most? It's so hard to concentrate when there's so much awesome Percy Jackson news in the world. Chalice of the Gods was a really shocking announcement, and we're still recovering. Surprise, surprise, we had a lot to talk about this episode. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:54:21) We're here to talk about The Last Olympian chapter 17. We're coming up on the end of this book pretty quickly!! We don't want to talk about Silena dying OR the fact that she was the traitor, but we have to. This was a great twist to the book, and it would've been hard to guess. Are we upset with Silena for being the traitor? CLARISSE DRAKON-SLAYER, FIRST OF HER NAME. The Blessing of Ares is super interesting, especially because it makes Clarisse momentarily invulnerable. Who does Percy summon with Mrs. O'Leary? Okay, why was Leneus' death so sad??? Aryan is going to be so great as Grover. We can see it so clearly. That elevator ride was a beautiful full circle moment. Is the Empire State Building guard mortal? We have another Will Solace sighting! How do we feel about Annabeth's confession that she no longer thinks Luke can be saved? Okay, hear us out: Rachel is Jacob. Percy is Bella. Mount Olympus is Renesmee. It would've been nice to see a conversation between Annabeth and Rachel after this moment. The moment at the hearth is what the sand dollar scene should've been like! Thank goodness Poseidon decided to listen to Percy. Kronos is near! Feedback (01:38:09) Daphne Olive totally agrees with us that Frozen II is the best Frozen. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 64, which will take a look ahead at everything coming in 2023! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. We also talk about the most recent news in the Riordanverse, including the Mark of Athena graphic novel cover reveal and all the latest on the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series coming to Disney+, as well as reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 16. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:25) December 19 is your last day to enter our art giveaway! See instructions. And don't forget about the livestream fundraiser. Details here. Read Riordan gave us a last-minute holiday gift guide from the gods and demigods. We got the cover reveal for Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem by Roseanne A. Brown. We even got the cover reveal for the upcoming Mark of Athena graphic novel. Hazel's birthday was on December 17! Cool. Awkward. Black., edited by Karen Strong, features short stories from Roseanne A. Brown and Kwame Mbalia. Someone on Twitter also asked Becky about merchandise, and she talked a bit about how it all depends on the success of the show. As Percy Jackson and the Olympians goes into their winter break, we probably won't be getting the Zeus and Posiedon casting. In a now-deleted Tweet, Becky also talks about seeing a network cut of an episode, and how it's interesting to see what ends up being cut. Charlie Bushnell has officially wrapped on the first season. Jessica Parker Kennedy talks about playing Medusa. Becky and Stephanie Lurie also helped us figure out approximately how many books Rick might've signed in his lifetime. Ashlee will no longer be in charge of Rick's socials, but here's an update on what they'll be doing (and their dream jobs for the future). We also go through some new Goodreads answers from Rick Riordan. There are no current plans for a Daughter of the Deep sequel. That also goes for any additional Percy Jackson illustrated editions. Will we ever see Leo Valdez again? It turns out we'll learn how Will identifies in The Sun and the Star. Is there a Magnus Chase adaptation in our future? Could Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities ever get an adaptation? Deep Dive: Chiron (00:30:30) There weren't many references to Chiron in Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes and Greek Gods. The Party Ponies are much closer to what actual centaurs are like. Chiron is pretty different because he doesn't share the same ancestry as the other centaurs. There are several different origin stories for centaurs, and all of them are…weird. Did you know some centaurs are horned!? Why does it always come back to Zeus and Hera? Poor Chiron didn't have a very nice childhood. How do you teach a horse gymnastics!? We find out what Chiron is REALLY supposed to look like. We get into the age-old debate of how centaurs would wear pants. Who are some of the heroes Chiron trained? Karen discovers a fun fact about Disney's Hercules! How did Chiron die? What was Chiron like in the Percy Jackson books? More importantly, what did he look like? Why wasn't he a white stallion in any of the visual adaptations of the books? Chiron has a couple of pretty interesting abilities. What are some Chiron-related fun facts from the series? Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:47:39) This week, we're reading The Last Olympian chapter 16. Did this chapter make us emotional? Did we find it exciting? Is it believable that Annabeth was able to fly the helicopter? This part is going to be SO exciting in the show. If this is Rachel without any training and focus, imagine what's coming next! Do we sympathize with Percy about being mad that Rachel told him he's not the hero? Is it weird that Chiron really wasn't worried when Rachel showed up with some possible prophetic thoughts and dreams? We're up to Prophecy Count #31! And Demeter and Persephone definitely stole the show. How do we feel about Nico's arguments to get Hades to help the Olympians? Seriously, Hades needs some family therapy. Is Ethan purposefully trying to stall Kronos? Is he having regrets? Does Prometheus think he's smarter than Kronos? That drakon is very large. And very close. Percy's anger throughout The Last Olympian is totally valid. We're constantly impressed with how good of a leader and strategist Percy is. Why was Silena the one to lead the charge with the Ares Cabin? We really have to wait until next week to talk about what sort of impact this will have on the book and all these characters. Feedback (01:21:09) Jessica writes in to tell us she totally agrees with us on the concept of Western Civilization. Phoebe thinks Dionysus is afraid of the Party Ponies, and we find that visual totally hilarious. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 63, which will look back on everything that happened in 2022 and all that we accomplished! Prophecy Radio episode #61 offers up some gift ideas if you have a godly parent and have no idea what to get them this holiday season! Who was the hardest to shop for, and who would be happy just to spend some quality time with their family? We also talk about all the latest news in the Riordanverse, which includes taking a quiz that tells us which Rick Riordan Presents villain we are, as well as reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 15. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:02:06) We're doing a livestream fundraiser with the other Riordanverse podcasters! See details here. Don't forget about our art giveaway! You have until Dec. 19 to enter! Karen wrote an article about why now is the perfect time to be a Percy Jackson fan (and how it's only going to get better). Did you catch the New York Times crossword puzzle clue about Percy Jackson? In case you missed the news, Read Riordan posted about Judy I. Lin joining Rick Riordan Presents! Mark Oshiro has to sign HOW MANY tip-ins for The Sun and the Star!? Can you believe there's only one(ish) month left of filming!? We recently found out what Sonny the chihuahua/chimera looks like. Comicbook.com did an interview with Alexandra Daddario, and she had nothing but nice things to say about Leah and the Percy Jackson and the Olympians show. Read Riordan put out another quiz, and you KNOW we had to take it to figure out which Rick Riordan Presents villain we were. Gifts worthy of the gods (00:29:43) We decided to come up with some gifts worthy of the gods, whether they deserved it or not! Kristen had trouble coming up for a gift for Zeus, but honestly, he would love what she landed on. Karen really wanted to get him a lame tie, but she found something a little better. Hera's gifts came a lot easier, and Kristen's idea was GENIUS. Both of our presents are centered around her relationship with Zeus, but in two VERY different ways. Poseidon was kind of a big deal, and we really wanted to do something special for him. Gotta feed the ego of a god, you know? When it comes to Hades, the best thing to do is appeal to his hardworking nature. Like, would he even enjoy going on vacation?? Kristen's gift for Athena is clever AND practical. Karen also wanted to get her something practical, but with a little extra sparkle. Does Ares' gift from Kristen actually work better for…Hermes? Whatever gift you get Ares, it has to include violence. And meat. This week's chapter inspired Kristen's gift for Dionysus. Meanwhile, Karen is wracking up some serious debt to get on Mr. D's good side. When it comes to Apollo, it's a good idea to feed into his vanity. Karen takes some inspiration from the Hermes myth for her idea. If you're gonna get something solar-powered for Apollo, you gotta go with a moon present for Artemis. Meanwhile, Karen really wants her to take a day off from all that hunting. Hephaestus doesn't need any junk. Keep it simple. And symbolic. But he'd probably also like something complicated that engages his mind. Kristen's idea for Aphrodite is actually really clever, and she has a fantastic reason for giving it to her. Meanwhile, Karen wants to gift her something that'll allow her to see the latest and greatest fashions. What to get for Demeter? It's corn! It has the juice! Karen goes above and beyond for Demeter, and she wracks up even more debt to do it. While Kristen didn't gift Hermes any Redbull, she did think of another beverage he might enjoy. But we all know what he would really like—a way to trap and embarrass Zeus. Hestia might be the easiest god to please with a gift for the holidays. Kristen wants to make sure she stays nice and toasty. And Karen wants to give her the gift of spending time with her family. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:59:23) It's time to talk about The Last Olympian chapter 15. This chapter was a little lighter than last week's. We appreciate that this battle wasn't over right away. What would you do if you were invincible? Did anyone else cry when the Party Ponies arrived? It's nice that Annabeth and Percy finally had a heart-to-heart. This was a really nice Annabeth moment after not seeing her much in this book. But this scene really made us worry about her future! We're totally counting this as Prophecy Count #30. But what is a prophecy, exactly? It's always Party Time with the Party Ponies! Dionysus TOTALLY meant to call Percy into this little vision chat. We discuss the idea that Western Civilization will fall if the gods are defeated. Is this a fair assessment, given how global and interdependent our culture is these days? What came first, the chicken or the Greek god? Okay, Karen has come up with a better nickname for Lukronos. All in favor?? Are any of the other gods worried about their demigod children? That scene where Percy discovers Paul's car with his parents inside is going to be rough to watch on screen. Okay, Prometheus is definitely as manipulative as everyone said he was. What do we think of Rachel and Annabeth's rivalry? Feedback (01:39:12) Caoimhe gave us an EXCELLENT idea for another episode. Monster Donut Podcast also did an episode on pit scorpions! Ian also discovered Percy Jackson because of the films, just like Sarah from last week! P.S. Stick around for the bloopers! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 62, where we'll do a Deep Dive on Chiron! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #60 talks about all things fan art, and even has a special guest! Please welcome Sarah Barra (aka @Hellredsky), who graciously joined us for another fun discussion. We also talk about all the latest news in the Riordanverse, including the new Rick Riordan Presents author who recently joined the roster, as well as reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 14. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:02:28) The start of this episode is chaotic, but what else is new? We recorded a little early this week, so news is light. Read Riordan lets us know some great gifts you can receive as a demigod. They definitely stole our idea for next week! Except no they didn't, our idea is pretty different. Rebecca Kuss at Rick Riordan Presents/Disney-Hyperion announced a new book coming to the RRP imprint! Judy I. Lin has joined Rick Riordan Presents! We've definitely heard of A Magic Steeped in Poison. It'll be so fun and interesting to read about Taiwanese folklore! Karen is super excited about a horror novel joining the lineup! Kristen is…not. (The book she references is The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich.) This book takes place in Vancouver, so we can live vicariously through the characters to explore the city where Percy Jackson and the Olympians is filming! Kristen rebukes Karen's idea of exposure therapy for horror novels. Percy Jackson fanart (feat. Sarah Barra aka @Hellredsky) (00:09:31) Welcome, Sarah! It's so great to finally talk in person because we've been mutually supporting each other for a while now! Sarah tells us about how she's been drawing fanart since she was little! They also give us some good advice on how to keep the enjoyment of your craft alive when it's become your fulltime job. And if you're looking for some good tools, Sarah has some great advice for that, too! Remember: Digital art is just as valid and beautiful as traditional art mediums. Does anyone else struggle to color in their creations? You can't please everyone! Even ugly or bad art invokes an emotion, and that's important, too. Create something YOU enjoy, first and foremost. It's so interesting how a fandom can grow into something new thanks to fanart and fandom. In particular, we're thinking of Velinxi, whose art is monumentally influential in the Percy Jackson fandom. It's fun to put your own spin on a character like Percy Jackson, and it's interesting to hear how Sarah does that in their artwork. All three of us talk about how old we are and how long we've been around the internet and fandom culture. Social media might be a dumpster fire on any given day, but it also brings us a lot of opportunities to meet new people and see different kinds of artwork. What are some of our biggest fandoms? Shout-out to Teen Wolf!! Kristen and Karen are huge fans of Karen Hallion and Lord Mesa. Sarah tells us how she first got into Percy Jackson. Some of Sarah's favorite PJO artists include: Viria, Velinxi, Sarah Moustafa (@smoustart), Arisha (@arishatistic) Drazen (@spiderdeli), and Marik (@marik_draw). What kind of influences, good or bad, will the show have on the fandom once it comes out? We love the Percy Jackson multiverse! Sarah makes a good point about how Clarisse's portrayal in the fandom could change a lot because of Dior Goodjohn's casting in the show. Karen wants to see more demigods wearing glasses! All of us also want to see more diversity in the fandom! We're giving away one of Sarah's $40 chibi commissions! The rules are simple: 1. Make sure you're following @prophecypodcast and @Hellredsky on Twitter, and 2. Tell us who your favorite Percy Jackson character is using the hashtag #ProphecyRadioGiveaway. You'll have until December 19 to enter, and then we'll pick one random winner to receive the prize! Make sure you follow Sarah @Hellredsky on Twitter/Instagram/Tumblr/Hive/Mastodon, as well as check out their ko.fi as well as their podcast Herosgrafia. “Bye bye!” “(I waved.)” We had a BLAST. Thanks again to Sarah, and we can't wait to have her on again! Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (01:08:50) It's time to talk about The Last Olympian chapter 14. Why was this chapter SO. LONG. Kristen's recap this week is poetry to the ears. We loved hearing Thalia's perspective on the whole LuKronos situation. It'll be so interesting to see how the Hunters are portrayed in the show. Why is Thalia defending Hermes in this situation? Percy doesn't want anymore nightmares, but you can't always get what you want. We're up to Prophecy Count #29! Prophetic dreams are a demigod thing, and it's simply not mentioned enough. What does Clarisse dream about?? We loved the callback to Auntie Em's Garden Gnome Emporium. Why do certain monsters take longer to reform? What's the correlation between intelligence and the length of time it takes for them to return from Tartarus? Are we meant to empathize with Ethan Nakamura at all? When did Luke start regretting his decision to join with Kronos? Oh, to be a fly on the wall inside Kronos' mind. Has the Big House always been blue!? Why does the Oracle choose young girls as its vessel? (Is this an Apollo thing…?) Was May Castellan unstable even before she was hit with Hades' curse? We kind of spoiled ourselves last week. Oops. Have we seen Thalia use lightning before!? Okay, how did Percy create that hurricane? And on ACCIDENT? Can we assume Percy can control hurricanes, too? And if so…what the heck, man!? You're falling down on the job. We once again discuss whether Percy Jackson is overpowered. We try to figure out where the Clazmonian Sow is from. How do the lion statues come to life? That visual of Percy lassoing the flying pig is hilarious. Feedback (02:02:01) Jessica chimes in with some comments on the gods and the Fates. Espeon is excited about the new Rick Riordan Presents book, not least because it's a young adult book! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 61, where we'll try to come up with a few gifts good enough for the gods! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #59 does another Monster Guide, this time on pit scorpions (and all related materials). In addition, the hosts discuss all the latest news in the Riordanverse, though we're happy to report it looks like everyone took a break during Thanksgiving week here in the States, as well as reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 13. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:02:00) There's not a lot of news this time, which is pretty nice after the last couple of weeks. Read Riordan posted an article asking what are the gods and demigods thankful for this year? Becky answers a question about whether more The Sun and the Star samplers will be available. We also learned that the book will be 480 pages long. Monster Guide: Pit Scorpions (00:06:41) In turns out pit scorpions are kind of generic monsters, BUT we did find some scorpion-related content to talk about. Hesiod wrote of Skorpios and Orion, and there are several different versions of this myth. But they were both put into the sky, and they never appear at the same time! We also learn all about the Skorpios constellation and how it relates to Kristen and Karen specifically. Oh, and do you know what the Skorpios constellation is called in a culture that is very specific and related to our interests?? Scorpio is associated with death and rebirth, and you know what? That just makes a lot of sense. Can you guess what planet rules this sign? Ovid also wrote about Phaethon, the son of Helios, and how he drove his father's chariot among the stars. It's interesting to think about what real life things this story tries to explain. But what about pit scorpions in Percy Jackson? Let's just say, we wouldn't want to battle this monster, like, ever. Percy is also super lucky to have survived being stung by one. Do the scorpions come out to play during any of the battles? Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:19:12) It's time to talk about The Last Olympian chapter 13. Grover and Anya need to form a No Bunnies Allowed Club House. Would YOU have a snowball fight with a bunch of ice giants? We wonder how giants are usually portrayed throughout various pieces of media. Prometheus is a super interesting character, and we really liked his presence in the story. What advancement could Prometheus have given mankind? Can we actually trust what Prometheus is saying? That back-and-forth between Percy and Ethan was fantastic. This is Prophecy Count #28 because we make the rules. It couldn't have been easy for Luke to grow up with May as his mother. How did May end up the way she did? We might be skipping ahead here. Okay, we don't feel bad for Hermes here, but hear us out… We get a nice little Grover moment in this chapter. Who started the rumor that Pandora had a box!? Prometheus is very good at his job, and you know what really helps? He's not wrong. But you know who's worse than the Olympian gods. KRONOS! Percy was on FIRE this chapter! Figuratively speaking. Feedback (00:57:52) Thanks for your email, Edward! We love learning about the inconsistencies and mistakes throughout the books. Nicolaas gives us another Percy Jackson fun fact. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 60, where we'll talk about fanart, complete with a couple surprises! Prophecy Radio episode #58 sees the hosts talking about food. Specifically, what kind of food represents each of the main Olympian gods (plus Hades)? In addition to this, the hosts discuss all the latest news in the Riordanverse, including the casting of Hades and Hephaestus for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, as well as reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 12. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:03:23) Read Riordan released another OTP timelines article, this time about Nico di Angelo and Will Solace. Then, we try to guess which gods said what in the Riordanverse. Did you do better than us?? You probably did. Let's talk about the November 11 blog post. What moments from The Lightning Thief do they need an underwater set for? The Underworld set is going to be AMAZING. It's so interesting to think which gods we're going to see this season and which have to wait. It has been confirmed and confirmed again: No actors from the Percy Jackson movies will appear in Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+. It's so amazing to hear that the studio partners keep giving them excellent notes and that everything has been super collaborative. We got another update for Daughter of the Deep! How long do you think it'll be until that movie comes out? Make sure you've ordered The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro. Hopefully we're able to go to an in-person tour stop for this book, but if not, maybe we can catch the virtual event. Okay, it's time for the November 18 blog post, which is all about new casting. First up is Jay Duplass as Hades. Do we know Jay from anything? One of our friends is definitely excited for this one! We've also got Timothy Omundson as Hephaestus! Is there a better, more prolific actor for this role?? We think not! Kristen makes a confession that SHOCKS Karen to the core. We do a lot of speculating about how Hephaestus' role could be expanded for the show. Divine recipes (00:40:41) It's almost Thanksgiving here in the United States, so let's talk about food! Despite the fact that Zeus' recipe inspired Karen to come up with this series, Kristen had the most trouble with him! We both definitely tried to incorporate weather somehow. How do you turn Hera's personality into a recipe?? We agreed it had to be something homemade and comforting. For Poseidon, is there really any choice other than seafood? Kristen went for freshness and Karen went for abundance, but both work really well! And no, there's no blue JELL-O with goldfish inside. Hades definitely demands some sort of MEAT. We both also incorporated fire in different ways. And maybe the Italian flag?? Athena was a little bit of a tricky one, but we both knew it HAD to involve olives or olive oil in some way. Plus, it had to be light and have enough substance to sustain you during battle! Kristen's pick for Ares was honestly the best recipe out of the entire list. We both knew it had to be meat, and it had to be violent. Kristen also describes Ares in the nicest way possible. Next up is Dionysus, and we go in two different directions for this one. Kristen was thinking parties, and Karen was thinking wine. How could you go wrong with either? Kristen knew she HAD to work oranges into her recipe for Apollo. Karen had a similar reasoning for going with her choice for Apollo as well. Artemis is next on our list, and Kristen had a really clever way of working one of her major symbols into her choice. Why did we both think Artemis was vegetarian?? She's the goddess of the HUNT. And yes, Karen found a way to incorporate mushrooms. Obviously. Hephaestus is such an interesting god to find a recipe for, and apparently Kristen had NO trouble with this one. That being said, we think of Hephaestus VERY differently. For Aphrodite, are there any options other than chocolate?? Callie interrupts us to eat a little bit of dinner. Whatever Aphrodite gets, it has to be elegant and decadent. Demeter is an interesting one, but Kristen found a really good recipe for that. Meanwhile, Karen went with something a little more classic. Hermes was another god who was really fun and interesting to come up with recipes for. Seriously, tacos are so versatile and they're good to eat on the go! Our last god on the list is Hestia, and we knew from the get-go it would be a little bit difficult. Whatever her meal is, it's gotta be roasted over an open fire! Was this fun? Did you like it? Should we do some more? Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (01:24:45) It's time to talk about The Last Olympian chapter 12. Is this the first time we're meeting Will Solace? He must be an excellent healer if Percy is allowing him to look after Annabeth. How much does Pompona look like Demeter? Watch out for that foreshadowing! It'll bite you right on the nose. We really wanted to root for you, Ethan! We're really feeling the Percabeth vibes in this chapter!! There was a point in time where Luke wanted to run away from Kronos and everything he had to do. How do we feel about this? Grover returns to deliver some bad news and eat some furniture. Karen totally forgets the word for hellhounds. We're officially up to Prophecy Count #27. Nico needs to learn the delicate art of listening to your elders. Did Maria di Angelo make the right call, or was she being naïve? Zeus would totally kill children. Poor Persephone would've been forced to live with Hades' mistress. YIKES. Hades goes full God of Death on the Oracle, and we just feel so bad for her. Rachel's father is kind of the worst. Kristen has ANOTHER confession. Feedback (02:00:40) Henry lets us know that there's a Mythic Quest/Percy Jackson crossover…in Becky's dreams. Phoebe tries to help us out with the whole sand dollar problem. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 59, where we'll do a Monster Guide on pit scorpions.
