This week we're doing our annual SDCC download, and there is a lot to unpack. We start with Avengers: Doomsday, because obviously, and get into the very Dr. Doom-heavy footage from Hall H. From there we hop to Disney+'s Percy Jackson, which just dropped a season 3 teaser and a release date (November 20!) that has book readers buzzing about how accurate this season might actually be. Then we talking about Mike Flanagan's Carrie reboot — yes, with cell phones, yes, we have thoughts — landing on Prime October 7, plus Matthew Lillard's casting as the principal, which, honestly, correct choice. And because no Comic-Con recap is complete without a little discourse, we get into Kevin Feige comparing the Doctor Doom buildup to Thanos and why fans are very much not here for it. Rounding things out, we've got Spaceballs news (Rick Moranis showed UP, people), a surprisingly moving story about how fan campaigning got Coyote vs. Acme un-shelved and into actual theaters, and just an overall reminder that this fandom stuff still means something to people. We close things out with recs: Laura's hydrating her face with the Elf Holy Hydration moisturizer, Eric's deep in Star Trek mode with the Improvised Star Trek podcast (start on episode 85, "The Search for Sock"), and Pam wants you to buy local produce when you can to avoid the current explosive diarrhea outbreak sweeping the nation. And in this week's installment of After Dark... the girls haven't had a chance to catch up on life things in a while! "Her and Percy Jackson arguing all over the place Lightning Thief style." The show congratulates long-suffering Philadelphia 76ers fan, JuJu Gotti, on his team acquiring LeBron James and asks him whether he has any concerns about how LeBron fits in with his Sixers. If you know the name Bear McCreary, it's probably from the goosebumps he's given you without you even knowing it was him. You may know his work from Battlestar Galactica, The Walking Dead, God of War, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. He's one of the most prolific composers working today, and on July 31st, he's releasing Singularity: Ekleipsis, his second metal album. He sat down with us to talk about creating something that is his own art. We dug into how neither of us comes from a metal background and what that means for the music he is creating. He drops some great recommendations of things to listen to in order to find your way into the genre. The album itself is brilliant from top to bottom. Bear McCreary discusses how this was, in his opinion, more finely tuned than the first, but both albums have been on constant repeat for me lately. About Bear McCreary and Singularity: Ekleipsis Award-winning composer and recording artist Bear McCreary began his career as a protégé of legendary film composer Elmer Bernstein, before bursting onto the scene scoring the revered series Battlestar Galactica in 2004. Since then, McCreary has won three Emmy Awards, including two for Disney's Percy Jackson and the Olympians and one for his theme for Da Vinci's Demons, a musical palindrome, and has won twelve International Film Music Critics Association Awards, including the award for Score of the Year in 2024, his second. Named the 23rd Most Definitive Bear in Popular Culture (The Ringer), he's also been the subject of a clue on Jeopardy! Project highlights include The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Amazon); Foundation (Apple TV); the beloved series Outlander (STARZ); Godzilla: King of the Monsters (Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures); The Walking Dead (AMC); and Netflix's Academy Award–nominated documentary Crip Camp (produced by Barack and Michelle Obama). McCreary's celebrated scores for Sony PlayStation's blockbusters God of War and God of War Ragnarök have earned him two BAFTA Awards and two Grammy nominations. In 2024, McCreary released The Singularity, a hard-rock concept album featuring legendary rock talent including Slash, Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Rufus Wainwright, and more. McCreary has collaborated with artists from across the musical spectrum, including Hozier, Fiona Apple, Shirley Manson (Garbage), Annie Lennox, and the late Sinéad O'Connor. In 2014, Maestro Gustavo Dudamel conducted a suite of McCreary's music with the L.A. Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl.
Greek mythology retellings keep multiplying, and nobody can quite explain why. Christopher Nolan just dropped a $250 million adaptation of The Odyssey, a poem roughly 2,700 years old, and Meaghan and Shirin wanted to figure out what keeps pulling all of us (and Hollywood) back to these stories. This one stays high-level, and neither of us was a classics major, so we'll own that upfront. We walk through what The Odyssey actually is, why Odysseus is a much grayer hero than people remember, and why feminist retellings like Madeline Miller's Circe keep landing so hard. Then we get into Nolan's stacked cast: Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as the suitor Antinous, and Lupita Nyong'o doing double duty as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (2026): The Cast, Explained • Nolan's $250 million IMAX adaptation of The Odyssey hit theaters on July 17, 2026, his first film since Oppenheimer. • Confirmed casting: Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as the suitor Antinous. • Lupita Nyong'o pulls double duty as Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra. Charlize Theron plays Calypso (some listings say Circe, so we're flagging it). The Odyssey, For People Who Skipped Classics • The short version: Odysseus spends ten years getting home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, mostly because he pissed off Poseidon. • Penelope holds down the kingdom and fends off suitors while raising their son, Telemachus, not knowing if her husband is alive. • Gods, monsters, a cyclops, the enchantress Circe, the sirens. Odysseus survives on cunning over brute strength, then loses his whole crew anyway. Why Greek Mythology Retellings Keep Winning • Older texts sort people into good and bad. Modern retellings hand the mic to the ones shoved to the margins. • Feminist retellings are the clearest example, like Madeline Miller's Circe, centering a character the original treats as a footnote. • Odysseus himself was never a clean hero, and that gray area is a big reason the story keeps holding up. Odyssey Adaptations Hiding in Plain Sight • You've seen more of them than you think: O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Cold Mountain (Charles Frazier, 1997), and [LINK: Ulysses] by James Joyce. • It reaches into sci-fi too, from 2001: A Space Odyssey to the creatures and detours borrowed by Percy Jackson (Rick Riordan). On Our Nightstand: New Releases and ARCs • Shirin is deep in Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman, now getting a Peacock series from Seth MacFarlane (Princess Donut on screen, finally). • Meaghan is reading an ARC of The Iron Hex, the debut romantasy from Canadian author Victoria S. Walsh, out August 4, 2026. It WAY overuses simile and is a little more navel-gazing than I expect Ma would actually have had time for, but I'm finding it very engaging and interesting. Listening to this for me is completely independent of the new Netflix series that is currently ALL over the news and social media. I didn't even know there was going to be a new series until just this week and I have been on the waiting list for Caroline for several months now. I also feel like I need a disclaimer that despite my deep childhood fondness for this series, as an adult, I've definitely come to see what a sanitized, idealized, and whitewashed picture it paints of the westward expansion, colonialism, and the indigenous nightmare of forced removal.with Tanner and Mark: Daughter of the Deep—a lengthy revisiting of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Rick Riordan. Shades of Percy Jackson and a bit of Harry Potter abound therein. I do enjoy the diverse cast and the female heroine. There is plenty right here, a cocoon for the metamorphosis of now.Inviting you to step into the Cauldron of Change in our Rituals of Returning video for July. This month is a gently powerful invitation into midyear reflection and integration—a sacred pause to let your experiences steep, so you can carry forward what truly nourishes you.Reminder: I do create monthly handbooks for members of our Goddess Magic Mystery School community and July's handbook is available here.Expanded post available here.Questions to consider:What from the first half of this year needs to be:Scooped out and released?Left to steep longer?More fully savored and integrated? What needs to be reconsidered, redefined, or re‑explored at this midpoint of the year?Where do you need spikier boundaries around your time, your days, and your energy? What needs to be lovingly cut away so you can choose transformation?Where are you being invited to savor the sweetness of your life more fully? How can you create sanctuary in your everyday life, right where you are?How can you create what you seek right now, in the middle of everything? What might become clear if you grant yourself a sacred pause this month to integrate, reflect, deepen, and steep?AffirmationsI tumble with the turning.I allow myself to choose and to change.I take my life to the cauldron and listen.I am on the lookout for the presence of wonder.I am awake to the miracle.I tend to the secret garden in my soul.I am at home in myself.I create a sanctuary in my everyday.I savor this sweet and wild life.A Blessing of BelongingWe close our weekly live community practice each week with our familiar blessing of belonging:Breathing in, we arrive in our bodies, breathing out we soften. We remember we belong to the earth and the sky,to ourselves and one another.May our small, steady flamesjoin countless othersin a great weaving of repair. Here, in the Cauldron of Change of summer, we remember: we do not change alone. We change in circles, in conversations, in the solidarity of knowing that other people, other places, are lighting their candles too, placing their own experiences into the cauldron, asking their own questions, and trusting that together, across distance and in all our imperfect humanity, we are part of a great weaving of repair. So as July unfurls, I invite you to steep in some practices/ideas that we've recently been exploring in circle:Let July be July.Let yourself be yourself.Release what is too heavy.Let what is still becoming have time to steep.Savor what is already sweet and true. And remember, every time you pause to remember you belong: you are a small, steady flame in a wide, wild, shimmering cauldron of change in which we can brew a new world to share. Our Inner Pace…My inner pace in Julymoves in resonancewith the languorous, liquid, luminous, lazy rhythm of desire,of longing,of curiosity and wonder. It is the pace of discovery,of creative renewaland energetic re-setand review, the pace of life's own unfolding,on its own time,in its own ways.Sending love to all of you.Keep living your magic, Molly, Mark, + Family This is a public episode. For millennia, the legend of Medusa has haunted the human imagination, a creature so terrifying that a single glance could turn the living to stone. While most dismiss her as pure mythology, some researchers point to serpentine monsters appearing independently across ancient cultures and ask: were they all describing the same thing? But look closer at Medusa's story, and something shifts. Because some say she wasn't born a monster; she was made into one. Drop us a note about the podcast. We read a string of Scripture that ties together rest, marriage honor, family blessing, and self-control, then turn Psalm 101 into a practical guide for what we allow into our homes and friendships. We also share quotes from Salmon P. Chase, reflect on culture and education, and end by pointing back to prayer and the gospel as the best help we can offer our nation. • Psalm 127 on God building the house and giving rest • Hebrews 13:4 on honoring marriage and rejecting sexual immorality • Acts 7 on Moses, deliverance, and the danger of idolatry • Psalm 128 on joyful work, family blessing, and fearing the Lord • Proverbs 16 on patience, self-control, and God ruling outcomes • Psalm 101 as a blueprint for integrity and wise companions • Salmon P. Chase on substantial religion, humility, and practical wisdom • Thoughts on Bible courses in schools and Christian heritage claims • Closing prayer and blessing for families and the nation If you are looking for a middle grade fantasy series, kind of like Narnia, The Hobbit, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, if you would check out the countryside series If you enjoy it, if you would leave a review online somewhere, I would be grateful for that Same with the podcast, American Soul and America's Christian Heritage And if you have five or ten dollars to spare a month, that supports the podcast and the writings. Drop us a note about the podcast. We open with Psalm 127 and confront the lie that nonstop work can secure a home, a family, or a nation without God. We move from prayer and marriage Scripture to American history, military sacrifice, and a blunt challenge about what happens when a culture abandons Christian foundations. • Psalm 127 on anxious labor, rest, and God's protection • A brief report on a UK sexual assault case and sentencing concerns • Prayer for listeners, families, marriages, and the hurting • Proverbs 31 as a standard for character and marriage • Acts 7 with Stephen's retelling from Abraham to Moses • Children as a gift from the Lord, not a burden • Proverbs 16 on gossip, strife, and quiet evil • A DUI death case used to argue about immigration and public safety • Medal of Honor story of Jose Calugas and the reality of combat • Critique of coed deployable units in war and public safety roles • The origin of “In God We Trust” through Salmon P. Chase and Congress Also, if you get a chance, join us over on America's Christian Heritage Podcast. If you would leave a review of that as well, I would appreciate it. If you have five or ten dollars a month you can spare, there's a link in the show notes where you can set that up and that helps both podcasts. If you're looking for a middle grade fantasy series, kind of along the lines of Narnia, The Hobbit, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, if you would check out the first two books in the countryside series, I would be very grateful for that. Surprise! It's a bonus episode of BEHIND THE LENS! So many terrific interviews of late with some very energetic and enthusiastic filmmakers, and all rather lengthy, that I can't fit them all in on our weekly Monday show. And because of the fun and enthusiasm of these filmmakers, I want you to hear and enjoy that enthusiasm rather than read a written feature. So you're getting some bonus episodes, and this is one of them as I chat with director and editor JOSH DRAGOTTA and Tiki mug collector and film subject DOUG "FINI" FINICAL about the documentary CABALI AND THE TIKI MUG OBSESSION. CABALI made its Los Angeles premiere at Dances With Films last month. What a fun, fun film and what passionate and engaging guys. I, for one, have always admired the artistry of tiki mugs, but until this film, never knew the history of the Tiki culture. CABALI AND THE TIKI MUG OBSESSION fills that void as it examines the history, artistry, and resurgence of Tiki culture through the collectors, artists, and enthusiasts who helped preserve it during a period when much of the culture was disappearing. And did you know that the Tiki culture, as it's called, started right outside of LA in Venice, California? Directed by JOSH DRAGOTTA who is a veteran editor specializing in commercial production, trailers and documentaries, along with editing on projects tied to La La Land, Bullet Train, Severance, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians, CABALI marks his feature directorial debut. Focusing on the evolution of Tiki mug collecting from a niche hobby into a worldwide community rooted in design, craftsmanship, nostalgia, and preservation, the film also follows Doug "Fini" Finical, a longtime Tiki collector whose extensive collection of over 1000 Tiki mugs inspired the creation of Cabali, a modern speakeasy-style Tiki bar in Oro Valley, Arizona. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

BookTok helped readers find community online. Now, some fans are taking that connection into the real world through literary tourism. USA TODAY Books Reporter Clare Mulroy joins The Excerpt to talk about joining a Percy Jackson-inspired trip through Cairo, Athens and Rome, where readers visited ancient sites, completed quests and bonded over the books that shaped them. She also explains why literary tourism is growing, what readers are really paying for and how book lovers can build their own story-inspired experiences closer to home.Let us know what you think of this episode by sending an email to podcasts@usatoday.com. Today on Too Opinionated, we're joined by actress, producer, writer, and creative force Catharine Daddario. While many know the Daddario name through siblings Alexandra Daddario (The White Lotus, Percy Jackson) and Matthew Daddario (Shadowhunters), Catharine has been carving out a unique path of her own through independent film, production, writing, and modeling. Catharine recently appeared in the hit family fantasy film:
Lisa Dent checks in with the newsroom to hear their stories including the list of things Indiana needs to complete before the Bears can move to Hammond, Percy Jackson becomes the most looked up book franchise, and Mary asks “what’s with” people dumping their belongings in parks.

Send us Fan MailIn this episode of Teachers in Transition, Vanessa explores how the books we loved when we were young helped shape what we notice, value, question, and carry into adulthood AND how our own stories can help us write a better resume. From Erma Bombeck and Agatha Christie's Miss Marple to Nancy Drew, The Boxcar Children, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games, Divergent, and more, this episode looks at the “childhood bookshelf” as more than nostalgia. Those early stories may have taught us how to solve problems, recognize patterns, seek belonging, survive broken systems, resist being reduced to one role, and remember who we were before burnout took over.Vanessa also talks about reading with children and teens, the difference between censorship and conversation, and why the books young people choose can give us clues about what they are trying to understand. In the Career Transition and Job Search segment, Vanessa moves into resume basics for teachers leaving the classroom. She explains why a modern resume is not your whole life story, why skills should be shown through evidence-rich bullet points instead of a disconnected skills section, and how teachers can begin turning real classroom stories into quantifiable resume accomplishments. You'll also hear about the “Everything Resume” — a master resume template that holds your stories, accomplishments, projects, leadership roles, certifications, data stories, communication wins, and more — so you have raw material ready when it is time to tailor a resume for a specific job posting.Episode highlights:Why childhood books may still hold clues about who we areHow Gen X, Millennial, and Gen Z reading experiences shaped different kinds of courageWhy “stories matter” does not mean censorship is the answerHow rereading old favorites can help reconnect us with ourselvesWhy teachers need targeted resumes, not one perfect resume for every jobHow to turn teaching stories into resume bullet pointsWhy quantifiable resume metrics matterWhat an Everything Resume is and why teachers should build oneHow SCOUT helps Vanessa's clients explore career direction and translate teaching experienceMentioned in this episode:Erma Bombeck — Aunt Erma's Cope Book and other humor collections Carolyn Keene — Nancy Drew series Franklin W. Don't forget to grab your free scripture journal at PrayingChristianWomen.com/journal today! How do we protect our kids spiritually and set wise boundaries without raising them in a culture of fear? In this episode, Jaime and Alana dive into the nuanced—and sometimes controversial—topic of navigating Halloween, fantasy media, and cultural traditions as Christians. They discuss the critical difference between setting healthy spiritual boundaries and letting “religious default settings” or fear-based superstition dictate our choices, exploring why treating pop culture with extreme suspicion can sometimes do more harm than good. Alana highlights the historical weaponization of the word “witch” by old-school religious establishments to silence women and control spiritual independence, sparking a deeper conversation about how we label things as “evil” without thoughtful examination. Meanwhile, she opens up about her own attempt to watch Harry Potter as an adult and the surprising “nocebo” effect—how deeply ingrained beliefs that something is spiritually dangerous can trigger real spiritual and emotional unease—showing how our upbringing can shape our reactions even when we intellectually know better. Jaime shares her evolving perspective on allowing her children to engage with the series, moving from a more permissive stance to a greater awareness of potential spiritual “open doors,” while still rejecting blanket outrage in favor of Holy Spirit-led discernment. Along the way, they swap practical wisdom on navigating the gray areas of modern Christian parenting and culture. From the beautiful analogy of treating young children like delicate seedlings that need extra protection while older ones must develop resilience through measured exposure, to an eye-opening experience at an Alaska Native Heritage Center, to their kids’ own self-censoring decisions with Percy Jackson and Coco, they offer a discerning yet grace-filled perspective. They emphasize the importance of teaching our children how to think biblically for themselves rather than simply handing down rigid rules, and they guard against the easy temptation to judge other believers who reach different conclusions. Whether you are wrestling with what media to allow in your home, trying to break free from the fear-based religious environment you grew up in, or simply need a reminder to seek God’s specific wisdom for your family instead of defaulting to either permissiveness or paranoia, we hope this episode encourages you to lead with prayerful discernment, intentionality, and confident grace. This week we welcome to the main feed, for the first time ever, resident Film Bro, one of our earliest patrons, and #MySistersBoyfriend, DYLAN DELUCA! Dylan has NEVER read Percy Jackson, never seen Logan Lerman play Percy Jackson, never heard a note of the Lightning Thief Musical, and is here to join our council of AWOCs (Adults Without Children) as we analyze the famous (to us at least) JSTOPJOSM (Jon Steinberg's Tetrahedron of PJO Showmaking) from our least witnessed angle (non-fans). I truly can't think of a better way to start winding down our Season 2 era than with a good ole long conversation with Dylan covering everything he loved, hated, and didn't understand about the Sea of Monsters. In lieu of socials Dylan asked to promote our patreon. Hey HBs! We're back with part 2 of AUTOBOYOGRAPHY by Christina Lauren! When we left you yesterday, Tanner and Sebastian were dating in secret and Tanner just realized that the most important piece of Sebastian's identity is his status as a faithful Mormon. Understandably, he's not sure where that leaves him or their relationship. That's where we're jumping in! Lady Loves: Mel: reading Percy Jackson to my kids every night before bed has been THE BEST. Sabrina: Live Music! It's their happiest place. Especially local live shows with unknown acts. Sabrina: ALSO, loop ear plugs! Leaving a heavy metal show and not feeling like they're underwater is revolutionary. Mel: WELL, IF WE'RE DOING EXTRAS. Current guilty pleasure is the latest season of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. Granted, this was recorded before I was done with the season and before Taylor Frankie Paul's continued abuse allegations broke and the subsequent Bachelorette scandal/cancellation. It got less fun then. Want to support the show? Rate and review us on your favorite podcast app! It super helps the algorithm connect us to new listeners. Want more of us? Check out our PATREON! Erin and Manasa begin their Percy Jackson podcasting by debriefing the Big Animorphs News, naturally (perchance… a new podcast idea??? Stay tuned). Will there now be explicit Animorphs references in the Disney+ PJO adaptation? Crossover musical episode? Just kidding (unless…). Erin points out that the plot of this book is just like Halloweentown 3, Halloweentown High. The mythics have a hard time fitting in with the demigods. We find some more plot holes. They learn about some mysterious threats plaguing the mythics and Nico. And then… the mythics start to disappear. First Arielle, then Quinoa. Then, Manasa gives us a deep dive on the Empousa, our favorite hot weird-legged woman. PS - there were some funny bloopers edited out this episode. It was a bit of an editing beast to fix.
