We visit the Chinatown of Vancouv–we mean, San Francisco, in “Hell Money”. Then, Darin Morgan gives us his last episode (well, until 2015) with “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space”. Plus! Eric really wants a piece of sweet potato pie. iTunes RSS
It's the ultimate battle of our two nerdy shows, finally battling head to head in our trope of the week: Favorite Nerdy Episode. Z Nation writer Delondra Williams joins us to discuss (and nerd out over) Doctor Who "School Reunion" (Series 2, Episode 3) and The X-Files "Jose Chung's From Outer Space" (Season 3, Episode 20). We also talk about Riverdale (again), Mulder's late night activities, and how emotional Mabry got over a tin dog. Special shout out to Cody Zigler for making us sound good and Kara Johnson for our theme song (and token male guest host Scott Pawley, as per usual)! Follow us (on Twitter, not in real life, preferably): TV Wars (@anewtrope). Asha Michelle Wilson (@ashamichelle). Mabry Williams (@mabrywilliams). And watch full episodes of Z Nation on SyFy.com!
Dare To Dream with Debbi Dachinger and special guest Whitley Strieber. Whitley Strieber is the author of Communion, the Key, Warday, the Communion Letters, Super Natural: a New Vision of the Unexplained and over 40 other books. Movies and TV series have been made of many of his works. His website, Unknowncountry.com, presents news from the edge of science and Whitley hosts a long-running podcast called Dreamland. Mr. Strieber has influenced much in our culture. In the TV series Babylon 5, there is an alien race that is similar to the Greys in his book Communion; the race is named the Streibs after Whitley Strieber. In an episode of The X-Files, "Jose Chung's From Outer Space," the cover of the book From Outer Space is a parody of the cover of Communion. In the 120th book in The Hardy Boys series, The Case of the Cosmic Kidnapping, the character of "Hodding Wheatley," a Connecticut-based writer who has had UFO experiences, is inspired by Strieber, as indicated by the surname of the character "Wheatley.". The post-punk dance music group The Mekano Set cite Whitley Strieber's non-fiction work as an influence - they wrote a tribute to Strieber for their album The Three Thieves (a reference to characters from Strieber's novel The Grays) entitled What is it Whit? http://debbidachinger.com
"You probably thought you saw something up in the sky other than Venus, but I assure you, it was Venus." -"Jose Chung's From Outer Space," The X-Files Perhaps you aren't a true believer like Mulder, but even you must admit that aliens of all shapes and sizes have invaded our books, living rooms, and movie screens for decades. This episode, Tim and Nick examine how the idea of the alien works itself out in the stories around us. Then, because it's EPISODE 70, and the SIXTH ANNIVERSARY of your premier podcast on storytelling, we have a special segment--Our Take on a Bit of Live Crackpot Pun Project Brainstorming from the Intrawebs If It Was Selected For Cinema! It's just as awesome as it sounds. And it involves werewolves. So, seriously, it's Halloween, it's a new episode, we discuss aliens and werewolves...why haven't you listened yet? Show Notes
The truth is out there: season 3 of The X-Files is the show's strongest season. That is, if you can trust Paul, Arlo, and the inimitable Wesley "Wezzo" Mead as they have another of their periodic discussions of Chris Carter's '90s masterwork. What makes season 3 work so well? It might have something to do with the series' expanded tonal range--a tense thriller in "Pusher," Satanic panic meetsHeathers in "Syzygy"--and the confidence with which it tackles both the monster-of-the-week hours and the increasingly complex (or is that convoluted?) mytharc installments. Then there are the Darin Morgan episodes ("Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose," "War of the Coprophages," and "Jose Chung's From Outer Space"), which are something else entirely. Plus holy cow, UK politics have gotten super depressing since the last time Wezzo stopped by. Next: Paul and Arlo return to Boneville, site of last year's Four-Color Flashback, for a look at the newly published Bone: Coda.
(Trigger Warning: The subject of rape is discussed from about minute 22:00-25:45 and again from about 27:30-28:30, so please skip forward if you would like to avoid that conversation. Thanks!) This week, author Heidi Bleackley joins the girls to discuss a writer-centric episode, Jose Chung's "From Outer Space!" It's a favourite of Vanessa and Heidi's, and quickly makes its way into Amanda's heart, too. The girls cover topics such as the prison system, why it's good to be alive in 2016, and Mulder's problematic interrogation practices. Plus, the girls hilariously try to imitate Mulder's iconic girly scream! Closing Music by Eric Matyas www.soundimage.org
