In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Joyce Chung. Joyce grew up in Honolulu with immigrant parents who modeled discipline, frugality and a deep commitment to education, even though money was rarely discussed out loud. After leaving Hawaii for MIT and later building a career in tech and venture capital, Joyce found herself learning a whole new relationship with risk, wealth and what it means to use money with intention. In our converssation Joyce shares how those lessons shaped the biggest financial choices in her family and inspired the mission behind her foundation. Joyce began her career in operating roles in the technology industry (Cambridge Technology Partners, Sony Corporation, Adobe Systems) and transitioned to early stage venture capital (Adobe Ventures, Cardinal Venture Capital, Garage Technology Ventures), investing in technology entrepreneurs looking to change the world. She has always had a passion for innovation and entrepreneurship and working with people that are excited about using creativity, technology and hard work to solve real world problems. In 2023, she pivoted to focusing on philanthropy to help address pressing needs and challenges in the areas of community resilience, entrepreneurship and environment. Joyce and her husband set up Makahakama Foundation, a foundation to channel their efforts in giving back to their local community, helping under-resourced entrepreneurs and supporting nature through conservation and innovation. Supporting mission-driven individuals and nonprofit organizations brings together the causes of importance to her family and the skills she has developed over her career. She holds an SB in Chemical Engineering from MIT and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business. When Purpose Becomes a Plan Joyce's journey from an immigrant upbringing shaped by frugality and resilience to building the Makahakama Foundation shows how wealth can become a catalyst for meaningful change. Guided by the Aloha spirit and deeply held family values, Makahakama focuses on community resilience, under-resourced entrepreneurs, and environmental stewardship. It's a powerful reminder that philanthropy isn't just about giving. It's about being intentional, taking thoughtful risks, and creating impact you can see in your lifetime. If you're thinking about how to give back more intentionally, an Aspiriant advisor can help you explore philanthropic strategies, structure a foundation or donor-advised fund, and align your wealth with the causes and values that matter most to you and your family. The Mousedebaters talk Disney Would-You-Rathers.What begins as a perfectly normal episode quickly turns into a reminder that we should not be allowed to have microphones.Kami kicks things off by forcing Brittany and Luke to play “Guess the Disney movie based on its promo tagline” — a game that sounds fun until you realize that many of the official Disney taglines are wildly unhelpful and we are… mediocre under pressure. From there, we spiral into a round of Disney Would You Rather questions that say more about us than we're comfortable admitting, including:Would You Rather: Lick the entire Haunted Mansion queue handrail or ride the Storybook Canal Boats with your worst ex?Would You Rather: Be roasted to the point of tears by the Jungle Cruise Skipper or publicly reprimanded by a plaid vest?True to form, we're making questionable choices, revealing alarming personal preferences, and proving yet again that Disney fandom plus unchecked ADHD is a wild combination to record and put on the internet for everyone to hear.

Ray Chung grew up in a faithful Christian home in Malaysia, watching both sides of his family run businesses that shaped the fabric of their communities. Even as a kid, he sensed that business carried real power, but it wasn't until his own encounter with deeper faith that he began wrestling with how work, calling, and impact could fit together. College only fanned that flame, awakening a vision for business as a living witness to the Gospel. Years later, Ray would spend significant time with HOPE International, where a healthy, Christ-centered culture left a lasting mark on him. For more than twenty years, he has been helping leaders and teams reorient their hearts toward the way of Jesus. Now a senior consultant with Rising Sun Consultants, Ray walks alongside organizations as they build cultures formed by servant leadership and spiritual maturity. Then in 2021, Ray faced a radically personal invitation to generosity when he sensed God asking him to give one of his kidneys. His story is full of wisdom on surrender, Christlike culture, and what it means to faithfully steward the life God has given you. Major Topics Include: The theology of work An example of a healthy organizational culture Why an organization's culture is important Words of wisdom about the non-profit model Assessing an organization's board, leadership, and financials The five elements of servant-leadership Prioritizing intimacy with God as a busy leader Practical tips for spiritual rest Being called to give his kidney Stewarding your story, experience, and relationships in a way the points others to Jesus QUOTES TO REMEMBER “Work is a channel of grace to display the glory of God in meeting needs, ours and our neighbors, as we generate resources that can be shared in the redemptive work of the Gospel.” “Business can be a powerful force for God's transformation” “God has been at work in these communities long before we show up.” “Organizational culture is really hard to fake long term.” “Culture requires intentionality and accountability.” “Do I believe that the more I work, the more I can advance the mission? Or do I really think that God is at work here?” “Sometimes we need to remember how to be a human being rather than a human doing. I try to give myself permission to be about more than work.” “I used to believe the lie that I am what I perform. But I'm learning to believe the truth that I am loved by the Creator and that alone is enough.” “Our life is not our own when we are surrendered to God.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW Hope International (see our interview with founder, Jeff Rutt or CEO, Peter Greer) Jesse Casler (see our past interview here) Lead with Prayer by Ryan Skoog, Peter Greer, and Cameron Doolittle (see our interview with the authors here) Practicing the Way by John Mark Comer The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer Lectio 365 App Caleb Breakey, founder of Renown Publishing (see our past interview here) Kate Gardner, co-host of the Ascendants Podcast and co-founder of Magnify (see our past interview here) Alan Barnhart (see our past interview here) Julie Wilson, President of Women Doing Well (see our past interview here) Dana and Bill Wichterman (see our past interview here) The Finish Line Community Facebook Group The Finish Line Community LinkedIn Group BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW Psalm 46:10 | Be Still Be still, and know that I am God. It is finally time to talk big tires. The subject is all the rage these days, but we've been here for a while – riding our thick gravel tires on rigid drop bar bikes for years. Nevertheless, we are intrigued by a lot of what is coming to the discourse, especially some of the quantitative testing we are seeing from certain corners of the internet. Most notably, John Karrasch, a.k.a @flexfitbyjohn on Instagram. The bike fitter, a turned-off-road rolling resistance guru, has refined a form of the Chung method for testing to objectively measure the rolling resistance of countless tires, posting comprehensible graphs that demonstrate the comparative value of each. Karrasch also has a Patreon where he goes deeper into the data and breaks down the nuances of the different traits of the tires he tests. Now, he is a niche-expert who has become a legend in the small corner of the internet that is interested in going fast on gravel. He is also a frequent pen pal with the Rodeo Labs crew, so we had to have him on the podcast to really get into the nitty-gritty details. If you want to learn more about John's testing, check out his Patreon account here.Logan has also written some pretty detailed stories on the subject. Here is a story he did for Cycling Weekly on some of his favorite options.Hosts: Logan Jones-Wilkins, Drew Van Kampen, Stephen FitzgeraldGuest: John Karrasch Hosted on Acast. Few beauty executives currently compete in a category they created, but that's the case for Dr. Julie Chung and Kent Yu, the married co-founders behind T3 hair tools (19:00). The duo created the luxury hair tool category back in 2004 when they launched T3 with the first lightweight, sleek and quiet blowdryer that delivered smoother, faster results. T3's Featherweight model was the first luxury dryer on the market and the most expensive at the time, priced at $200. Dr. Chung and Yu quickly found a consumer, and before long, T3 was the first hair tool sold in stores like Sephora. Fast forward 21 years, and they still own and operate 100% of their Los Angeles-based business. The success of T3 created a runway for a category now filled with brands like Dyson and Shark Beauty. So what is it like to compete in a category you created? Host Lexy Lebsack sat down with Dr. Chung and Yu to learn about their journey to becoming beauty founders, including making time for Dr. Chung's first career as an eye doctor. They also discuss how they're navigating their biggest challenges, balancing retail and DTC, maintaining NPD standards in a faster-is-better world, and competing within the category. But first, Lebsack is joined by co-host Emily Jensen to break down the news of the week. This includes the controversial launch of Rini, a line of skin-care products made for kids aged 2-12 and sold DTC. The line was launched earlier this month by actress Shay Mitchell, boyfriend Matte Babel and Esther Song, and received immediate backlash. Lebsack and Jensen also discuss the launch of Dua by AB, a diffusion line from skin-care founder Augustinus Bader and fronted by singer Dua Lipa. Unfortunately, diffusion lines — defined as secondary, lower-priced product lines from a higher-end brand — rarely find success in the beauty industry. Finally, the duo discusses L'Oréal Group's new investment in Chinese mass clean beauty brand Lan and Estée Lauder Companies' investment in Mexican niche fragrance brand Xinú.
Pete and Sam react LIVE to the hiring of new Virginia Tech Head Coach James Franklin. They also recap Week 12 in college football and are joined by Hokie legend Eugene Chung to talk about his 8-3 Delaware State Hornets.
