What if great friendships aren't found by luck but built through effort?Bestselling novelist Fredrik Backman, the mind behind A Man Called Ove (adapted into the Tom Hanks film A Man Called Otto), Anxious People, and the beloved Beartown series, has spent his career writing about the quiet power of ordinary people. But in his real life, he learned one of his most important lessons from his best friend of 30 years: meaningful friendship is a skill you develop, not a lottery you win.Despite being a self-described introvert, Fredrik discovered that you don't need hundreds of friends. You only get a few humans who truly shape your life. His newest book, My Friends, is a tribute to those relationships and the daily work of showing up for the people who matter most.In this candid and inspiring conversation, Fredrik and I talk about the healing power of friendship, why differences make relationships stronger, the value of having friends who edit us, and the joy of being genuinely happy for someone else.If you want to become a better friend and build deeper connections, this episode offers heartfelt lessons from one of the world's most compassionate storytellers. This is A Bit of Optimism.---------------------------This episode is brought to you by the Porsche USA Macan---------------------------To check out Fredrik's newest book, “My Friends,” visit: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/My-Friends/Fredrik-Backman/9781982112820Find the full-length speech Fredrik gave for Simon & Schuster here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSuSyZ92Cjg
Just because it's November doesn't mean we still can't enjoy the summer. In this episode of Still Loading I am joined by Ray Barnholt from the No More Whoppers podcast (and occasionally Retronauts) and Andrew Kinsey from The EXP Point to talk about the summer of 1975, specifically the summer as seen in the game Boku no Natsuyasumi 2: Umi no Bouken-hen also known as My Summer Vacation 2. Boku no Natsuyasumi 2 is a game unlike anything else that I've played. I had heard about the game a few years back on Retronauts (which Ray was on and is the one who spoke about it) and was curious about what it was like. But the main problem is that the game was never localized in english, at least officially. And then earlier this year I found out about a fan translation from a Hilltop Works that came out in November of 2023 so I figured it was finally time to dive in. Ray, Andrew and I break down whats great about this game, why it makes us all feel so nostalgic and overall what we got out of our experiences. Which summer are you nostalgic for? Bit of a mixed bag for you today, with three unrelated topics. First, we look into why athletes on anabolic–androgenic steroids so often experience tendon injuries. As far as we can remember, a possible explanation has been that the tendons can't keep up with the fast gains of muscle mass and strength from AAS use, but new evidence indicates that there's more going on here! Second, there's growing evidence that isometric training at long muscle lengths can build equal amounts of muscle as traditional full-range-of-motion training. We have a new study on isometric training in resistance-trained subjects that's kind of cool, and we break it down for you. Finally, we got a question about lifting belts on our subreddit. What do they contribute, and is it worth buying one? Timestamps: 05:00 - Use of anabolic steroids and increased risk of tendon injuries 16:10 - Isometrics done at long muscle lengths build muscle better than full ROM? 26:15 - What's the point of lifting belts, and when should you use one? (If you want to listen to the older episode we mention, about testosterone replacement treatment, it's episode 77.) *** Do you like what you hear so far? We all intuitively know that hypocrisy is a bad thing. But what if it isn't a flaw, but a feature? But maybe the real problem isn't hypocrisy, it's how we think about it.Episode SummaryOn this episode, I'm talking to Dr Michael Hallsworth, a leading behavioural scientist and the author of The Hypocrisy Trap. We explore a topic that's instantly recognisable but not often properly understood. Hypocrisy is something we're quick to spot in others, slow to acknowledge in ourselves, and often design around as if it were avoidable or inherently wrong. What Michael reveals — through personal stories, behavioural experiments, and a careful unpacking of what hypocrisy really means — is that our judgments of hypocrisy say more about us than about the people we're criticising. In fact, hypocrisy isn't just common; it's structurally baked into how we navigate competing priorities, conflicting values and real-world trade-offs. And sometimes, paradoxically, a little hypocrisy might even be useful. That makes it incredibly relevant to human risk. In compliance, ethics, and organisational culture, we tend to assume people should act consistently with what they believe, and we often penalise them when they don't. But as Michael explains, this assumption can lead us to build systems that are brittle, punitive or out of touch with how people actually behave. This conversation challenges that frame and offers a more human — and more effective — way of thinking about inconsistency, trust and moral judgment.Guest Biography - Michael HallsworthDr Michael Hallsworth is Chief Behavioural Scientist at the Behavioural Insights Team (BIT), where he applies behavioural science to policy, organisational design and real‑world behavioural change. He describes himself as someone “helping people apply behavioural science to real‑world problems” and is the author of The Hypocrisy Trap: How Changing What We Criticise Can Improve Our Lives. At BIT, Michael has led numerous projects spanning government and private sector domains, bridging rigorous academic research with operational behavioural insight. His work is characterised by practical translation of behavioural science and an upfront acknowledgement of human complexity — the grey zones rather than the simple binaries. His new book brings this lens to the topic of hypocrisy, exploring how our judgments of double standards shape behaviour, institutions and trust in counter‑intuitive ways.AI-Generated Timestamp Summary[00:00:00] Intro and framing of hypocrisy as a human behavioural risk[00:01:00] Why hypocrisy runs deeper than just “saying one thing and doing another”[00:02:00] Discussion of how organisations treat moral consistency — and the limitations of that approach[00:03:00] Michael's background, BIT and the genesis of his book[00:04:00] Defining hypocrisy: the three‑part structure[00:06:00] The two‑fold meaning: false image vs double standards[00:07:00] Michael's personal story with his daughter + the context of “PartyGate”[00:09:00] Historical roots: Freud's view on civilisation and hypocrisy[00:11:00] Why hypocrisy is a social judgement rather than purely behavioural[00:13:00] When calling out hypocrisy becomes counterproductive in change efforts[00:15:00] Real‑world examples: politics, business, everyday life[00:17:00] The phenomenon of ‘do‑gooder derogation' and why consistent people make us uneasy[00:20:00] Hypocrisy as a strategic accusation in social media and organisational life[00:22:00] The behavioural science of induced hypocrisy and what it tells us about change[00:25:00] Honest vs. relatable hypocrisy: shifting the narrative[00:28:00] Michael outlines three categories for navigating hypocrisy[00:30:00] His reflections on writing the book and the surprises he uncovered[00:34:00] Balancing moral integrity with public perception and stakeholder expectations[00:36:00] Hypocrisy in corporate ESG: the tension between expectation and action[00:39:00] Managing contradictions among stakeholders: the inevitable trade‑offs[00:41:00] Experiment results: private hypocrisy and moral judge[00:44:00] The paradox: why we prefer people who are ‘inconsistent but principled' over ‘consistent and bland'[00:46:00] Authenticity vs inauthentic leadership — and the hypocrisy dimension[00:48:00] Is this a practical manual for “how to do hypocrisy well”?[00:51:00] Final reflections: hypocrisy isn't always about morality—sometimes it's about signalling, trust and change[00:54:00] Michael's hope for what the book can achieve and closing thoughts[00:57:00] Wrap‑up, thanks and behavioural nudge for the listenerLinksMichael's website - https://www.michaelhallsworth.com/The Hypocrisy Trap – https://www.thehypocrisytrap.com/Behavioural Insights Team - https://www.bi.team/Michael's IT profile – https://www.bi.team/people/michael-hallsworth/'Partygate' explainer - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-59952395
“Halfway Out” is for anyone who feels stuck between the person they used to be and the person they're trying to become. It speaks to people who are fighting old habits, healing from their past, and learning how to grow even when growth feels messy. This song is for someone who knows they're changing, but isn't fully out of the darkness yet, someone rebuilding themselves step by step, holding onto hope while wrestling with doubt.
It's Nintendo Month! This year, Karl, Will & Marty spotlight on the incredible score to Mario Kart World! For Part 1, they focus on the amazing original music, and Part 2- the phenomenal remixes. Enjoy!
'Running Toward the Fire' is about someone standing at the edge of a life-changing dream—terrified, unsure, but determined to move forward anyway. They're caught between who they used to be and who they're trying to become, fighting private battles nobody sees. Even though fear follows them at every step, they choose to chase something bigger than themselves, accepting that growth demands risk. It's the story of a person who would rather face the fire, fall, bruise, and rebuild than live a life that isn't true to their soul.

Three hours of deep underground house music from a couple of Naarm's extended blend bosses. @jackhnelson & @billusmoon Q. What sounds or feelings did you draw upon when gathering inspiration for this mix, and what listening environments could you imagine it being best enjoyed in? A. Sam: would be amiss not to say deepness – hard to really say what that means, though. Music played deep into the party, everyone on molly, the sound system is the one from Labyrinth, and it's in Yarra Bend. A. Jack: Yeah much the same as Sam, we share a mutual love for deepness albeit in a slightly different way. I hope it will be a bit of an all hours mix for cooking, eating, driving or for the hours after etc. Q. Are there any records in the mix that you were especially excited to share, and what is it about these songs that resonate with you so much? A. Sam: Many resonate, but the Baby Ford track toward the beginning sums up the whole deepness-being-difficult-to-describe thing, for me at least. David Alvarado does that to me as well – he features a fair bit here. A. Jack: there have been many tunes I would've loved to include - but without much defined planning we got to this mix one afternoon. Bit of a mish mash of different deepish tunes from over the years, moving around home base which is good old house music. Nothing too serious. Q. You've both been involved in facilitating a myriad of great underground parties in Melbourne over the last decade from outdoor raves to basement club nights, Jack, tell us about your latest endeavour Reasons and how that fits into the music community focussed party ethos? A. Jack: Reasons came about as a bit of an evolution from just running parties, toward something that connects and platforms the people around me and incorporates music, food and art.. After spending time overseas, I felt a strong pull to bridge those worlds, and to bring some of those ideas we encountered abroad back home. Q. I know you've both been working hard on various studio projects both solo and collaboratively, tell us about the latest endeavours, and what sounds are you enjoying exploring whilst working together? A. Sam: Making music together has always come naturally, finishing tracks less so. Plans mostly go out the window once we start, but I feel like we've always converged on a distinct feeling without having to explicitly voice. I like exploring all sounds with Neil, but I guess we've always tended to steer toward some kind of 90s nostalgia. The final track in the mix is a useful example. A. Jack: We're both always making music in some form, sometimes with more focus than others, at least for me. We've always got a few bits in the works I guess (including the last track in the mix), but as Sam said, finishing things together doesn't always happen... Lately, I've been trying to be a bit more deliberate with what I am making. Definitely a few releases to come in the next 6 months, as well as a new non-dance music project.

A few months ago, our friend Simon Sinek visited our BW Papersystems location in Phillips, WI to record an episode of his "A Bit of Optimism" podcast with Barry-Wehmiller Chairman Bob Chapman. It wasn't the first time Simon had been to Phillips, WI, as you'll soon hear, and for his podcast, Simon not only wanted to talk to his good friend Bob, but other BW teammates in Phillips, some he had met almost 15 years ago. That episode of Simon's podcast is out now. I highly encourage you to listen to it or watch the video version on You Tube, which is almost a mini documentary. You can find this and all things Simon at his website SimonSinek.com On this episode of our podcast, we want to bring you something special. While in Phillips to record, Simon and Bob held a Town Hall for the team members there as a thank you and to recognize them for the inspiration they have been, not only to Simon but countless others. We're going to bring you that Town Hall, which is a great dialogue between Bob and Simon, but also includes a couple questions from the audience, including the high school aged son of one of our team members that is a big fan of Simon's and was very excited to talk to him. Also, Simon and Bob talk about the 10th anniversary revised and expanded edition of Bob and Raj Sisodia's book, Everybody Matters: The Extraordinary Power of Caring for Your People Like Family, which is available now. Find out more about that at everybodymattersbook.com. So, here is a companion piece to Simon Sinek's A Bit of Optimism podcast featuring Bob Chapman and Barry-Wehmiller. Here's a Town Hall with Simon Sinek and Bob Chapman.

If you feel stupid while learning something new, you're doing it right. But if you keep doing the same thing over and over hoping it'll suddenly make sense - that's on you. The trick isn't to push harder; it's to find a new teacher, a new explanation, a new way in.That's exactly how Matthew Broussard approaches comedy - and everything else. A stand-up comedian, math nerd, and former financial analyst, Matthew is obsessed with learning and cracking the formula behind how things work. He treats every joke like an equation, testing, refining, and solving for laughter. He's the creator of Monday Punday, a puzzle webcomic and app, and has been featured on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Conan and Comedy Central's Roast Battle. He's also made appearances on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Mindy Project. His storytelling, including his viral tales about his mother-in-law, proves that logic and vulnerability can live in the same sentence. In this episode, we explore the overlap between comedy and leadership—the art of experimenting, iterating, and connecting through honesty. We talk about the hidden work beneath success, the difference between purpose and perfection, and why laughter might just be the purest form of optimism. This is A Bit of Optimism.---------------------------This episode is brought to you by the Porsche USA Macan---------------------------Check out Matthew's Youtube page for his full comedy special “Hyperbolic”: https://www.youtube.com/@mondaypunday---------------------------

In an unpredictable season, it was fairly predictable that Joao Pedro would find some form and a goal once we'd sold him a couple of weeks ago. Chelsea then, on the rise, but Arsenal's outstanding winning run comes to an end against a stubborn Sunderland. City put Liverpool well and truly to the sword at the Etihad. Spurs rotten home form continues as they have to accept a point agent Man United. The fixtures now take a very positive turn for Liverpool from GW12, so we ask whether they're worth investing in and which are the best FPL assets to get. You may have heard Simon Sinek's recent "A Bit of Optimism" podcast that featured Barry-Wehmiller Chairman Bob Chapman and a number of BW team member from our BW Papersystems company in Phillips, WI. One particular team member that was interviewed was Randall Fleming, who was a welder when we aquired (or adopted) Marquip, the company that would become BW Papersystems. While presenting our message of Truly Human Leadership, our CEO Bob Chapman is often asked: What about the people who don't get it? What about the people who actively work against positive change? Barry-Wehmiller has adopted more than 150 companies and as Bob once wrote: We realize that when we acquire a company, the people within that company are a product of their experiences. They may have experienced great leaders in their past or, more likely, they have had some negative experiences. Consequently, some have difficulty trusting our leadership message. That's okay. We're all at a different point on this journey, and we have to be patient and trust that the skeptics will eventually see the transformative power it can have—on both their work lives and their personal lives. On this podcast, you'll hear the story of Randall Fleming, who was one of those people who resisted change at first, but then experienced a radical transformation. He told Simon a part of his story, but we wanted to give you a deeper dive. This episode is Randall's story, told by Randall. It also features BW team members Ken Coppens and Maureen Schloskey. Randall's story is testament to the life-changing power of meaningful work and the power of what happens when people care in business. It's what happens when you establish a workplace culture of empathy and shared purpose as opposed to the "command and control" atmosphere of most traditional management environments. Randall's story is an illustration of when we say that the way we lead impacts the way people live. He not only found more fulfillment in his work, his whole life completely changed. And Randall then became a leader, mentor and inspiration to others.

Guiding Question: What do you really believe about eternity—and is that your final answer? Key Takeaways: Faith Decisions Shape Everything: Robert Lewis opens with the bold claim that faith decisions are the most important decisions a man will ever make. Everyone lives by some assumption about eternity—even choosing not to believe is, itself, a belief system. These beliefs influence our daily actions more than we realize. The Sacred Ground of the Mind: Continuing a theme from earlier sessions, Lewis calls this internal space of reflection “sacred ground.” It's where men weigh their end, envision eternity, and measure today's choices in light of that vision. Everyone Lives by One of Four Views: Nobody sees and nobody cares. Somebody sees, but it doesn't matter. Somebody sees and is keeping score. Somebody sees and wants to help. These views are not just abstract—they shape how men live, lead, and make decisions today. Comparison of Major World Religions: Lewis walks through what major world religions teach about the afterlife—Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Mormonism—and notes they all share one common element: earning heaven through good works. Christianity stands apart by offering a relationship with a Savior who offers help, not a checklist. Robert Lewis's Personal Journey: He vulnerably shares his own story—growing up in a chaotic home, experiencing inner turmoil in college, and ultimately reaching for Christ at age 18. That decision reshaped both his present and eternal life. The Two Circles Illustration: Lewis explains his theology using two circles: Top Circle – What Jesus Christ has done for me: Forgiveness of sins Eternal life Adoption as a child of God Bottom Circle – What Jesus Christ desires to do in me: Abundant life Good works Loving others well The top circle guarantees salvation (unchangeable), while the bottom circle reflects daily discipleship (changeable and rewardable). Eternal Impact of Daily Choices: While salvation is secured through faith in Christ, rewards in heaven are determined by how faithfully we walk with Him. Lewis emphasizes this doesn't determine if you get in, but it shapes how you live there. A: It's over. B: It's not over, and everyone will be fine. C: It's not over, and I'm good enough. D: It's not over, and I'll need help. Final Challenge: “Is That Your Final Answer?” Echoing Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Lewis asks each listener to confront their deepest belief about eternity. Options: Key Scripture References: Colossians 2:13–14 – Forgiveness of sins. 1 John 5:11–13 – Assurance of eternal life. John 1:12 – Becoming a child of God. John 10:10 – “I came that they may have life...” Ephesians 2:10 – Created for good works. John 15:12 – Loving others as Christ has loved. Philippians 3:20–21 – Citizenship in heaven and transformed bodies. 1 Corinthians 3:10–15 – Eternal rewards and loss.

The final episode of Hidden Levels explores the story of SEGA developer Tez Okano and the bizarre, meta-game he created: Segagaga. Okano joined SEGA in 1992, witnessing firsthand the company's tumultuous experience in the "console wars" against Nintendo and Sony. In the mid-1990s, SEGA struggled to make hardware that kept up with its rivals. The SEGA CD, the 32X, and the Saturn were all commercial failures. For Okano and many developers at SEGA, the console wars were both an exciting time to be in the video game business but also an intense and stressful time. They worked long hours, slept at their desks, and faced relentless deadlines. And so Okano decided to turn the chaotic nature of his professional life into a low-budget, self-parodying game about making video games at SEGA. In Segagaga, the player is a young developer tasked with saving SEGA's market share from the rival DOGMA Corporation (a stand-in for Sony/PlayStation). The gameplay is a mix of a role-playing game (RPG) and a management simulator, where you recruit demoralized, mutant-like SEGA employees by convincing them to join your team for the lowest salary possible. The gameplay reflects the absurd reality of game development. Players can spend a long time creating an original, hit game or they can quickly make a bunch of trashy titles (or shovelware) that barely keeps the company afloat. Okano even told us that the insults characters used in "battles" were actual quotes he heard in the office. The game was finished in 2001, just as the highly anticipated Sony PlayStation 2 was effectively dooming SEGA's Dreamcast. As game journalist Simon Parkin notes, Segagaga was released only two weeks before SEGA exited the console business entirely. This timing transformed the game from a self-parody into a memorial for a dying era, inviting players to literally defeat SEGA's failed consoles as bosses. Though Okano's bizarre proposal was initially met with laughter by executives, the game ultimately got made and, in a strange twist, benefited from the company's decision to stop making video game hardware. Even in the face of industry chaos, some creators simply can't help but pour their love and energy into making games. Credits This episode was produced by Jayson De Leon and edited by Meg Cramer. Mix by Martín Gonzalez. Fact-checking by Graham Hacia. Original music by Swan Real and Paul Vaitkus. Jocelyne Allen helped translate and interpret our interview with Tez Okano (truly the best). Special thanks to Lewis Cox and Tom Charnock over at The Dreamcast Junkyard. Their insight on SEGA, the Dreamcast, and Segagaga was extremely helpful in the making this story. Additional thanks to Adam Kuplowsky and 17 Bit's Jake Kazdal. Simon Parkin has a book about the history of the Dreamcast called Sega Dreamcast: Collected Works. It's rich and beautiful and has even more details about Segagaga that we could not fit into this story. Tez Okano would like to thank the small team that supported Segagaga. Especially Hisao Oguchi, Tadashi Takezaki, and Taku Sasahara. Hidden Levels is a production of 99% Invisible and WBUR's Endless Thread. The Managing Producer for Hidden Levels is Chris Berube. The series was created by Ben Brock Johnson. Series theme by Swan Real and Paul Vaitkus. Series art by Aaron Nestor.
