Every now and then I have an topic that's not necessarily related to games but I am justing DYING to talk about on a podcast. Sometimes I get lucky and can find a loophole to shoehorn that topic onto the show with a loose connection to video games. This episode is on a topic exactly like that. Joining me for this one, returning guest to the show, is Matt Storm. Matt joins me to talk about Dropout TV, an internet streaming service that just so happens also to have a few browser games that are connected to their shows. Matt and I have a ton of fun talking about why we love Dropout TV, what makes it so special as a streaming service and why the games are... Ok they aren't great, but they are games dammit. Shortly after Leigh's 22-year-old son, Josh, was killed in a plane crash, her best friend looked her straight in the eyes and said some of the most beautiful words a bereaved mother can ever hear: "Your grief doesn't scare me." When she told me that during this week's podcast interview, it took my breath away. As a grieving parent myself, I remember how often my grief did seem to scare people. I saw the uncomfortable glances from across the room. I heard the mumbled apologies when someone said something that "made" me cry. It was as if my tears were a burden they didn't quite know how to hold. And the truth is… my grief scared me, too. There were days I collapsed to the floor, sobbing so hard I feared I would never stop. Moments when the pain felt so big, so consuming, that I wondered if it might swallow me whole. Grief can feel like that—wild, unpredictable, and utterly overwhelming. Fifteen months into her own grief journey, these are the same emotions Leigh continues to navigate day by day. As she shared her story, I could feel both the depth of her love for Josh and the weight she carries in his absence. She spoke with such honesty about the moments when she still reaches for her phone, waiting for his daily phone call. And each day, she lights a candle for Josh, a simple yet sacred ritual that keeps his presence in the home. But here's a lesson I've learned—for myself and for anyone walking this path—slowly and painfully, and with more tenderness than I ever thought possible: Grief may shake us, but it does not destroy us. We survive what once felt unsurvivable. Bit by bit, breath by breath, we learn to carry the weight. And somewhere along the way, light begins to seep back in—not because the grief is gone, but because we've grown strong enough to hold both love and loss at the same time. If you're grieving today, I want you to know this: Your grief doesn't scare me. And even if you can't feel it right now, there is hope ahead. Not a return to who you were, but a gentle becoming of who you're learning to be. You're not alone.
Scrooged and Emotional Intelligence | The Shadows PodcastThe 1988 holiday classic Scrooged isn't just a funny, chaotic, Bill-Murray-fueled Christmas movie—it's one of the most emotionally rich, psychologically layered holiday stories ever put on screen. Behind the sarcasm, the ghosts, the TV-network chaos, and the unforgettable final monologue is a message that hits deeper than most people ever realize: emotional intelligence is the real holiday spirit. In this episode of The Shadows Podcast, we break down Scrooged through the lens of emotional intelligence, self-awareness, emotional triggers, leadership, relationships, and the power of personal transformation. Whether you've seen the movie a hundred times or you only remember Bill Murray yelling “Feed me, Seymour!” on live television, this episode will change the way you watch it forever.Frank is the perfect example of how unresolved childhood wounds, workplace pressure, and distorted self-worth shape adult behavior. We break down:Why Frank's sarcasm is actually a defense mechanismHow over-achievers numb themselves with workWhy “success without connection” leaves people emptyEmotional burnout, holiday stress, and the cost of avoiding vulnerabilityYou'll see Frank's emotional triggers—and maybe even a few of your own—more clearly than ever. Each ghost in Scrooged represents an EQ checkpoint:Past: self-reflection, childhood imprinting, identityPresent: situational awareness, emotional blindnessFuture: consequences of unhealed patternsWe talk about how the movie uses humor and shock to highlight empathy, compassion, and the life-changing impact of perspective-taking. Tiny Tim isn't the heart of this version—Grace and Calvin are.Frank's transformation is chaotic, hilarious, and deeply human. We explore:Why real change looks “messy”Why relationships need repair, not perfectionHow EQ helps us reconnect with the people we pushed awayWhy showing emotion isn't weakness—it's leadershipFrank's final monologue is more than a holiday moment. It's an EQ masterclass about connection, gratitude, forgiveness, and emotional courage. We bring the film into today's world with real-life examples:Perfectionism during the holidaysOverworking to avoid emotionsEmotional withdrawal after burnout (especially in leadership roles)The pressure to look “fine” when life feels overwhelmingHow unresolved pain shows up as anger, sarcasm, or distanceIf you've ever found yourself short-tempered during the holidays, overstretched at work, or emotionally disconnected around the people you love—this episode will make you feel seen.Awareness: Notice your emotional patterns before they hijack your holiday.Empathy: Everyone is carrying more than you know. Grace goes further than you think.Connection: Repair the relationships that matter.Purpose: The holidays aren't about perfection—they're about presence. We even give you reflection questions you can carry with you into the season or revisit during your inevitable Scrooged rewatch.Emotional intelligenceHoliday classicsLeadership developmentSelf-awareness and personal growthMovies with deeper meaning…then this is the perfect holiday episode for you.Share this episode with someone who:Needs a reminder that change is possibleStruggles with holiday stressIs navigating emotional burnoutLoves Scrooged, Christmas movies, or Bill MurrayIf this episode resonates, tap follow and stay connected for weekly conversations on emotional intelligence, personal growth, and the stories that shape us.“A Bit of Hope” by David Fesliyan — FesliyanStudios.com

Who would've guessed that one of the world's best company cultures was hiding behind a can of WD-40? Of all the places to find a leadership masterclass, the blue-and-yellow can in your garage probably wasn't on your list - but it's time to put it there.Garry Ridge - an Australian who brought his charm and curiosity across the Pacific - joined WD-40 Company in the late '80s and rose through the ranks, eventually serving as CEO for 25 years. But he didn't start out as the culture-building expert he's known as today. Early in his career, he lived by the old mantra: “be brilliant, be brief, be gone.” He had to unlearn that mindset and rebuild himself into a leader who centers people, learning, and belonging - an evolution that reshaped WD-40 from the inside out. His new book, Any Dumb Ass Can Do It, captures that journey. In this episode, we break down how Garry built a company where people genuinely love coming to work - even through recessions, pandemics, and all the external chaos leaders can't control. We dig into the systems and behaviors that fueled WD-40's rise, from psychological safety to accountability to building internal consistency no matter what the market is doing.Garry and I both believe that people deserve to love their work - even if they don't like it every single day. People want to feel seen, heard, and valued. And Garry is one of the rare leaders who knows exactly how to make that happen. This is A Bit of Optimism.---------------------------This episode is brought to you by the Porsche USA Macan---------------------------Check out Garry's new book.https://thelearningmoment.net/any-dumb-ass-can-do-it/And his coaching work with The Learning Movement. https://thelearningmoment.net/
We are sending Diablo back to hell.... again... Shane Selterre of the Retro Hangover Podcast returns to help me save Sanctuary again as we discuss Diablo 2. Diablo 2 is a very personal game for me. It was one of my earliest PC LAN party gaming experiences and it served as major game for me and a lot of my friends growing up. But what makes Diablo 2 special outside of my personal nostalgia for it? Shane and I discuss all of that in this episode. We look at what changed between the original Diablo and this one. We look at how this game is basically became the template for ARPG games for years. We talk about so much and yet only scratch the surface. Who knows, maybe Shane will be back for us to dive further beyond the surface, further into the depths of Hell. Thanksgiving doesn't get any respect, but we're looking to change that. The beleaguered middle child of the holiday season, Thanksgiving is often overlooked. Yet so many elements of Thanksgiving (gathering with family, romanticizing our past traditions, and reckless binge-eating, among others) seem to make it the perfect holiday for a dad and for country music. We explore why Thanksgiving doesn't get its due and we take our best shot at creating a Country Music Thanksgiving Playlist.0:01 - The introduction: Why do we, in the country music and dad community, not elevate Thanksgiving to its rightful place as the American Holiday? 2:33 - A Bit of History about Thanksgiving and how it became today's National Holiday. Please note that Donnie had a lot of trouble with the word “popularization.” 5:30 - What does Thanksgiving mean to the Dads? What must you have to eat in order for it to be “right?” And how does being an adult make a difference? Donnie also talks about when he was in shape and ran really fast during a Turkey Trot (Much like the misremembered history of the holiday, Donnie made up a bit of the story, but he did come in first place in the Clydesdale division one year).13:16 - Deep-fried turkeys, roasting turkey and handling the bird like a chunky nine-month-old. Also, how do you pronounce “giblets?”16:30 - How do kids change your traditions? Establishing these rituals is very important, and with a bit of planning, you can do great things. But there is more that gets done, and less pure enjoyment and celebration. 19:08 - The great joy of being a parent comes from hard work, and what Donnie says to people who are considering having kids. 21:21 - A Call to Dad Action: We should take Thanksgiving and make it THE American Dad Holiday. 22:30 - What must be on your Thanksgiving table?26:20 - Donnie and Dave discuss why we think Thanksgiving doesn't get the respect it deserves. And like the Father of our Nation, George Washington, the Country Music Dads make a proclamation naming Thanksgiving the Dads' Holiday. 29:48 - Why are there no country music Thanksgiving songs? There are a few songs that work, and the Dads try to jam a square peg into a round hole. 40:51 - Green Bean Casserole is easy: Dads, you can up your game! Donnie outlines the entire process of making it—and it's super easy. 42:31 - Alice's Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie is a bonkers banana pants song, but it's a song about Thanksgiving. Sorta…44:00 Change My Mind: Donnie pretends to believe that turkey is overrated. And Dave changed my mind -- in the name of tradition. But everyone can agree that the next day sandwich is what Thanksgiving is really all about. Thank you for listening. The word WISDOM is used so often when we talk about this midlife chapter. Bit what is wisdom? Do we all have it? Can we learn it? And how does it impact our lives? In this episode, I sit down with Common Wisdom author and ER physician-turned-researcher Dr. Laura Gabayan for a soulful deep dive into what wisdom really is — and why it might just be our greatest superpower in midlife. We unpack the eight elements of wisdom (think resilience, kindness, curiosity, spirituality, and more), how life experiences shape us, and why self-awareness is the doorway to a wiser, more grounded life. This conversation is a beautiful reminder that every challenge carries a lesson, every emotion has information, and every one of us can grow wiser with time. You'll hear about: Why wisdom is your greatest life asset The 8 elements that make up wisdom How to reframe hard experiences as growth Why kindness is strength, not softness The role of emotions in decision-making How to tap your inner knowing for the answers you seek ---------- Dr. Laura Gabayan is a world-renowned physician, scientist, researcher, Psychology Today Contributor, and Award-Winning Author of 2 books: “Common Wisdom: 8 Scientific Elements of a Meaningful Life” (March 2024) and “Common Wisdom Journal” (December 2024). To help others, the author created The Wisdom Research Project in 2013 to study wisdom after many medical obstacles forced her to change course. Using applied science and objectivity, Dr. Laura Gabayan developed a clear path to gaining wisdom that can help you live your best life, which is summarized in her books. Dr. Gabayon has received multiple research grants and awards for her work. Dr. Gabayan has also published dozens of academic manuscripts cited by hundreds of researchers. Dr. Gabayan and her work have been featured on FOX News At Night, FOX 11 Los Angeles, KTLA, ABC 8 Dallas / Good Morning Texas, KFMG 98.9FM The Culture Buzz, Jewish Journal, The Eden Magazine, Authority Magazine, BookLife Reviews, Great Books Great Minds, ShoutOut LA, Palisadian-Post, Leader Magazine and many top podcasts and radio shows. https://lauragabayan.com Author Website- https://lauragabayan.com Wisdom IQ Test (free) - https://lauragabayan.com/wisdom-iq-test/ SOCIAL MEDIA Linked IN- https://www.linkedin.com/in/lauragabayan/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/l.gabayan/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/DrLauraGabayan

But in his real life, he learned one of his most important lessons from his best friend of 30 years: meaningful friendship is a skill you develop, not a lottery you win.Despite being a self-described introvert, Fredrik discovered that you don't need hundreds of friends. You only get a few humans who truly shape your life. His newest book, My Friends, is a tribute to those relationships and the daily work of showing up for the people who matter most.In this candid and inspiring conversation, Fredrik and I talk about the healing power of friendship, why differences make relationships stronger, the value of having friends who edit us, and the joy of being genuinely happy for someone else.If you want to become a better friend and build deeper connections, this episode offers heartfelt lessons from one of the world's most compassionate storytellers. This is A Bit of Optimism.---------------------------This episode is brought to you by the Porsche USA Macan---------------------------To check out Fredrik's newest book, “My Friends,” visit: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/My-Friends/Fredrik-Backman/9781982112820Find the full-length speech Fredrik gave for Simon & Schuster here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSuSyZ92Cjg
This episode, University of Edinburgh PhD candidate Mia Belle Frothingham chats with Dr Frances Westall, leader of the Exobiology Group of the CNRS in Orléans (France). We talk about Frances's diverse and inspiring path, the dramatic and divisive period after a Martian meteorite found (ALH84001) in Antarctica in 1984, and the politic motivations behind false pretences of the discovery of extraterrestrial life.
Just because it's November doesn't mean we still can't enjoy the summer. In this episode of Still Loading I am joined by Ray Barnholt from the No More Whoppers podcast (and occasionally Retronauts) and Andrew Kinsey from The EXP Point to talk about the summer of 1975, specifically the summer as seen in the game Boku no Natsuyasumi 2: Umi no Bouken-hen also known as My Summer Vacation 2. Boku no Natsuyasumi 2 is a game unlike anything else that I've played. I had heard about the game a few years back on Retronauts (which Ray was on and is the one who spoke about it) and was curious about what it was like. But the main problem is that the game was never localized in english, at least officially. And then earlier this year I found out about a fan translation from a Hilltop Works that came out in November of 2023 so I figured it was finally time to dive in. Ray, Andrew and I break down whats great about this game, why it makes us all feel so nostalgic and overall what we got out of our experiences. Which summer are you nostalgic for? Bit of a mixed bag for you today, with three unrelated topics. First, we look into why athletes on anabolic–androgenic steroids so often experience tendon injuries. As far as we can remember, a possible explanation has been that the tendons can't keep up with the fast gains of muscle mass and strength from AAS use, but new evidence indicates that there's more going on here! Second, there's growing evidence that isometric training at long muscle lengths can build equal amounts of muscle as traditional full-range-of-motion training. We have a new study on isometric training in resistance-trained subjects that's kind of cool, and we break it down for you. Finally, we got a question about lifting belts on our subreddit. What do they contribute, and is it worth buying one? Timestamps: 05:00 - Use of anabolic steroids and increased risk of tendon injuries 16:10 - Isometrics done at long muscle lengths build muscle better than full ROM? 26:15 - What's the point of lifting belts, and when should you use one? (If you want to listen to the older episode we mention, about testosterone replacement treatment, it's episode 77.) *** Do you like what you hear so far? We all intuitively know that hypocrisy is a bad thing. But what if it isn't a flaw, but a feature? But maybe the real problem isn't hypocrisy, it's how we think about it.Episode SummaryOn this episode, I'm talking to Dr Michael Hallsworth, a leading behavioural scientist and the author of The Hypocrisy Trap. We explore a topic that's instantly recognisable but not often properly understood. Hypocrisy is something we're quick to spot in others, slow to acknowledge in ourselves, and often design around as if it were avoidable or inherently wrong. What Michael reveals — through personal stories, behavioural experiments, and a careful unpacking of what hypocrisy really means — is that our judgments of hypocrisy say more about us than about the people we're criticising. In fact, hypocrisy isn't just common; it's structurally baked into how we navigate competing priorities, conflicting values and real-world trade-offs. And sometimes, paradoxically, a little hypocrisy might even be useful. That makes it incredibly relevant to human risk. In compliance, ethics, and organisational culture, we tend to assume people should act consistently with what they believe, and we often penalise them when they don't. But as Michael explains, this assumption can lead us to build systems that are brittle, punitive or out of touch with how people actually behave. This conversation challenges that frame and offers a more human — and more effective — way of thinking about inconsistency, trust and moral judgment.Guest Biography - Michael HallsworthDr Michael Hallsworth is Chief Behavioural Scientist at the Behavioural Insights Team (BIT), where he applies behavioural science to policy, organisational design and real‑world behavioural change. He describes himself as someone “helping people apply behavioural science to real‑world problems” and is the author of The Hypocrisy Trap: How Changing What We Criticise Can Improve Our Lives. At BIT, Michael has led numerous projects spanning government and private sector domains, bridging rigorous academic research with operational behavioural insight. His work is characterised by practical translation of behavioural science and an upfront acknowledgement of human complexity — the grey zones rather than the simple binaries. His new book brings this lens to the topic of hypocrisy, exploring how our judgments of double standards shape behaviour, institutions and trust in counter‑intuitive ways.AI-Generated Timestamp Summary[00:00:00] Intro and framing of hypocrisy as a human behavioural risk[00:01:00] Why hypocrisy runs deeper than just “saying one thing and doing another”[00:02:00] Discussion of how organisations treat moral consistency — and the limitations of that approach[00:03:00] Michael's background, BIT and the genesis of his book[00:04:00] Defining hypocrisy: the three‑part structure[00:06:00] The two‑fold meaning: false image vs double standards[00:07:00] Michael's personal story with his daughter + the context of “PartyGate”[00:09:00] Historical roots: Freud's view on civilisation and hypocrisy[00:11:00] Why hypocrisy is a social judgement rather than purely behavioural[00:13:00] When calling out hypocrisy becomes counterproductive in change efforts[00:15:00] Real‑world examples: politics, business, everyday life[00:17:00] The phenomenon of ‘do‑gooder derogation' and why consistent people make us uneasy[00:20:00] Hypocrisy as a strategic accusation in social media and organisational life[00:22:00] The behavioural science of induced hypocrisy and what it tells us about change[00:25:00] Honest vs. relatable hypocrisy: shifting the narrative[00:28:00] Michael outlines three categories for navigating hypocrisy[00:30:00] His reflections on writing the book and the surprises he uncovered[00:34:00] Balancing moral integrity with public perception and stakeholder expectations[00:36:00] Hypocrisy in corporate ESG: the tension between expectation and action[00:39:00] Managing contradictions among stakeholders: the inevitable trade‑offs[00:41:00] Experiment results: private hypocrisy and moral judge[00:44:00] The paradox: why we prefer people who are ‘inconsistent but principled' over ‘consistent and bland'[00:46:00] Authenticity vs inauthentic leadership — and the hypocrisy dimension[00:48:00] Is this a practical manual for “how to do hypocrisy well”?[00:51:00] Final reflections: hypocrisy isn't always about morality—sometimes it's about signalling, trust and change[00:54:00] Michael's hope for what the book can achieve and closing thoughts[00:57:00] Wrap‑up, thanks and behavioural nudge for the listenerLinksMichael's website - https://www.michaelhallsworth.com/The Hypocrisy Trap – https://www.thehypocrisytrap.com/Behavioural Insights Team - https://www.bi.team/Michael's IT profile – https://www.bi.team/people/michael-hallsworth/'Partygate' explainer - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-59952395

A few months ago, our friend Simon Sinek visited our BW Papersystems location in Phillips, WI to record an episode of his "A Bit of Optimism" podcast with Barry-Wehmiller Chairman Bob Chapman. It wasn't the first time Simon had been to Phillips, WI, as you'll soon hear, and for his podcast, Simon not only wanted to talk to his good friend Bob, but other BW teammates in Phillips, some he had met almost 15 years ago. That episode of Simon's podcast is out now. I highly encourage you to listen to it or watch the video version on You Tube, which is almost a mini documentary. You can find this and all things Simon at his website SimonSinek.com On this episode of our podcast, we want to bring you something special. While in Phillips to record, Simon and Bob held a Town Hall for the team members there as a thank you and to recognize them for the inspiration they have been, not only to Simon but countless others. We're going to bring you that Town Hall, which is a great dialogue between Bob and Simon, but also includes a couple questions from the audience, including the high school aged son of one of our team members that is a big fan of Simon's and was very excited to talk to him. Also, Simon and Bob talk about the 10th anniversary revised and expanded edition of Bob and Raj Sisodia's book, Everybody Matters: The Extraordinary Power of Caring for Your People Like Family, which is available now. Find out more about that at everybodymattersbook.com. So, here is a companion piece to Simon Sinek's A Bit of Optimism podcast featuring Bob Chapman and Barry-Wehmiller. Here's a Town Hall with Simon Sinek and Bob Chapman.

If you feel stupid while learning something new, you're doing it right. But if you keep doing the same thing over and over hoping it'll suddenly make sense - that's on you. The trick isn't to push harder; it's to find a new teacher, a new explanation, a new way in.That's exactly how Matthew Broussard approaches comedy - and everything else. A stand-up comedian, math nerd, and former financial analyst, Matthew is obsessed with learning and cracking the formula behind how things work. He treats every joke like an equation, testing, refining, and solving for laughter. He's the creator of Monday Punday, a puzzle webcomic and app, and has been featured on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Conan and Comedy Central's Roast Battle. He's also made appearances on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Mindy Project. His storytelling, including his viral tales about his mother-in-law, proves that logic and vulnerability can live in the same sentence. In this episode, we explore the overlap between comedy and leadership—the art of experimenting, iterating, and connecting through honesty. We talk about the hidden work beneath success, the difference between purpose and perfection, and why laughter might just be the purest form of optimism. This is A Bit of Optimism.---------------------------This episode is brought to you by the Porsche USA Macan---------------------------Check out Matthew's Youtube page for his full comedy special “Hyperbolic”: https://www.youtube.com/@mondaypunday---------------------------
