Today I have SYNC WARRIOR Mike Genato back on the show to discuss “Micro-Licensing” which in short, is direct to consumer licensing. Mike has credits including advertising campaigns for Lexus, Infiniti, Nissan, Nike, Adidas, and Mountain Dew; promos and show open for HBO, SYFY, MTV, and BET. He has also worked with such heavy hitters as Netflix, Discovery Networks, Viacom, SOUTH, Elias, Massive Music, MAS, and Expansion Team. We discuss everything from the definition of micro-licensing, to how to set your rates, how to handle transactions, what terms you need to put in your contracts, to how to set up your website, to how to find libraries/agents that will represent your catalog for you so you don't have to be your own “sales rep”. This entire episode is chock full of GOLD so I would TAKE NOTES!! Want to learn more about how to make money with your music? Click the link below!

It happened in Vegas, and we are going to spill the tea. The SyFy Sistas have never laughed as hard as we did with everyone's favorite Discovery Season 3 cast member, Noah Averbach-Katz. The Son of Rachelle, while living a Trekkie's ultimate dream, earned his spot on the cast with his Julliard training, those super expressive eyes, and some good old-fashioned schmoozing. Noah gets silly and serious, and even makes a 'beta-canon logical' call on a burning question. We give a special shout out to our sound engineer DoS, the Anonymous. On this episode of “Making Elephants Fly,” Terry sits down with Mike Brennan. Mike is a New Jersey-based designer and illustrator. His artistic journey began as a boy in New York, where he would construct heartwarming greeting cards which lit up the faces of his family and friends. From an early age, he understood the importance of serving others through his art and bringing them value, an ethos still evident in his creative practice today. Mike's portfolio showcases his versatility and creativity. He is known for his custom ‘Rockstar' pet portraits, pop culture art, yoga art, live event sketching and graphic design. He is also the author and illustrator of three self-published books: “Dear Snow: One Man's Angry Rant Against Winter,” “Dear Human: What Your Dog Is Really Thinking” and “The Art of Yoga.” Mike helps fellow creatives and content creators leverage simple, practical steps for establishing a daily creative habit. He does this via public speaking and his course “Your Artist Journey” where he shares key methods and principles from his own daily art making practice that spans over seven consecutive years and counting (over 2,555 works of art). He studied in New York City and graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and The School of Visual Arts. Mike has enjoyed working with a range of clients in the past, from major brands including Mobile, Heineken, Chase Manhattan Bank, to independent agencies serving boutique businesses. His pop culture art was spotlighted on AMC's Talking Dead, and featured on Syfy.com. His yoga art appeared in ‘The Art of Healthy Living' exhibit at the I.D.E.A. Museum, Mesa, Arizona. On this episode, we talk about The Thing 2021 and why you should join us in on the livestream if you can't be in the room. This week the SyFy Sistas look at the thirteen Star Trek films to see how Black actors have fared in them. We rate the TOS crew, the TNG crew, and the Kelvin crew on inclusion. With the help of a repurposed Bechdel-Wallace type test (which gauges how women fare in films) that we call the SyFy Sistas Cultural Inclusion Checklist we hold these films up to their own IDIC imbued mirror. But it's not all “a day in diversity training”, we select personal favorites (come on, it's got to be the one with the whales!), and reveal which scenes really get on our last nerves. On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are joined by extra special guest, Greg Dengler (of our Army of Darkness episode fame), to wade into the shark-filled Los Angeles water with a bunch of straight-up dinguses in the 2013 “film” from Anthony C. Ferrante, Sharknado. “Syfy joke” isn't some clever turn of phrase we're using to describe this thing. It's a ridiculous experiment in bad movie-making that somehow captured the attention of enough people to allow for the funding and production of five additional sequels! Are the rest as gobsmacking and terrible as this first installment? I'm assuming they're worse, but you may never get to find out, dear listener/reader. After watching this fever dream of a movie, I find myself wishing that the sharks had won. It would have done my movie-loving soul good to see this movie end with Ian Ziering not make it out of the belly of the shark that gobbled him up whole. CHOMP! Credits. A better world is left for all.   These are not the heroes that this world needs or deserves. One day, if sharknados become a real and terrifying thing (and they just might considering the ravages of climate change), please send anyone else to save us all. The only bright, shining spot to this whole affair is that it gave us a chance to talk about it, so enjoy the episode. And if you're going to watch this thing, make sure you do it with a friend. Take it from us, that will make the entire experience bearable. This week, the Shuttle Pod feed has been taken over by the SyFy Sistas: Yvette, J.D., Subrina, Fran, and Tamia. The SyFy Sistas cover Sci-fi movies, books, comics, TV series, conventions, and podcasts from a black female point of view. It’s where science fiction meets Afrofuturism! You can read more content from the Sistas on their website or listen to their podcast on the Trek Geeks network. For this takeover episode, the SyFy Sistas ask: can any Star Trek movie pass the SyFy Sistas Inclusion Checklist test? Many listeners may be aware of the Bechdel test, in which a film or television show passes the test if two female characters have at least one conversation that is not about other male characters. The test became famous because, despite the extremely low bar for female representation in film, a surprisingly large number of movies and TV shows fail. The Sy-Fy Sistas have taken a similar look at the Star Trek movie universe, but with respect to characters of color. The Sy-Fy Sistas Inclusion Checklist consists of six key points that a Star Trek film must have to pass the test: At least two named characters of color Dialog of those characters must be more than merey supportive of the white characters Characters of color must have a skill that contributes to the survival of the group Characters of color don’t have a criminal record Characters of color must have a positive relationship with another character Characters of color are not magical stock characters The first run of this podcast episode is exclusively here on The Shuttle Pod, and will be published on the SyFy Sistas podcast on TrekGeeks.com later this week.

This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with writer, producer, former studio executive and diversity thought leader Kelly Edwards. Many of us want to be able to pitch our shows to a network or studio but just don't know how the game is played. Kelly not only knows how the game is played she wrote a book on how to do it.Her new book is The Executive Chair: A Writer's Guide to TV Series Development. To make compelling television, our industry depends on enthusiastic new voices with fresh ideas. While there are plenty of books about the mechanics of writing, this is the first time an insider has detailed the invaluable TV executive perspective. As key pieces of the entertainment puzzle, executives hold institutional wisdom that seldom gets disseminated outside network walls. The Executive Chair breaks down the business from the gatekeeper's point of view, illuminating the creative process used by those who ultimately make the decisions. Whether developing a project for the entertainment marketplace or merely probing the executive mindset, The Executive Chair dispels myths about the creative process and takes the reader through the development of a pilot script."There are a million ways to break into Hollywood. Your journey will be unique to you. Meet all the people. Work all the angles. But most of all, enjoy the ride." - Kelly EdwardsKelly Edwards recently transitioned from inside the network ranks into a writing and producing deal with HBO under her Edwardian Pictures banner. In her former executive role, she oversaw all of the emerging artists programs for HBO, HBOMax, and Turner. The pilots she produced through the HBOAccess Writing and Directing fellowships have screened at major film festivals including Tribeca and SXSW, and garnered multiple awards.Prior to HBO, Edwards was a key corporate diversity executive at Comcast/NBCUniversal for over five years where she oversaw over 20 divisions, launched employee resource groups, and introduced diverse creative talent to NBC, USA, Syfy, Bravo, and Telemundo.Edwards' career spans both television and film. Early in her career, she worked as a creative executive in features at both Disney and Sony under such talents as Garry Marshall and Laura Ziskin. After moving to television, she served as a senior executive at FOX where she developed LIVING SINGLE, CLUELESS, and THE WILD THORNBERRYS. While heading up UPN's Comedy division as the SVP of Comedy Development she developed GIRLFRIENDS, THE PARKERS, and MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE.In 2000, Edwards co-founded the non-profit organization Colour Entertainment, a networking group for diverse creative executives in TV, Film, Digital, as well as assistants, all designed to connect current and future industry executives with one another.Kelly and I had an amazing conversation about the business, how to pitch a television project to a studio, and much more. Enjoy!

We're off-world this week as we head into Denis Villeneuve's Dune with Ocean Murff, Matthew Fox, Steve Sarmento, and Pete Wright. This is a property with some baggage and we come carrying a lot of it. Loved the book? Loved the Lynch film? Loved the SyFy remake? We're a mixed back on the show this week and one of us hasn't seen a single dune-y thing until this very film. This, of course, gives us the opportunity to talk about how well the movie sets up the universe of Dune without the knowledge of the story and where our hero ultimately goes in the sequel. How well does the political intrigue land? Where is Zendaya in this thing? Why is there a guy named Duncan Idaho in the year 10000? It's a complicated story and we set out to explore how well this version communicates its themes in our search for Chani and the worm riders. You've probably seen the shows where ghost hunters go to spooky places to look for entities and use equipment to capture them. Well, believe it or not, one of the tools they use is special technical cameras. Behind the scenes, ghost hunters are a lot like genealogists. They look for documents and images to help determine what might be going on in these haunted places. This episode is part of my series on how other professions use historical images.  Related Episodes:Episode 61: Mourning Jewelry Fact or FictionEpisode 94: Dead Still: Postmortem PhotographyLinks:Dustin PariSign up for my newsletter.Watch my YouTube Channel.Like the Photo Detective Facebook Page so you get notified of my Facebook Live videos.Need help organizing your photos? Will you start on offense, or on defense? What would you give up to play the Squid Game? That's the real question here! Before the games start, maybe you should grab your lightsaber or your Chucky doll and hit the playground to practice your moves. Red or blue, it's all up to you!The fall weather has settled in nicely and in this spoopy season the boys have gathered again around the computer screen... erm... the recording studio to discuss the past month of pop culture and they've got some great topics to share with you! After a well placed Back To The Future reference, they jump into the first topic, Star Wars Visions on Disney+. What did the boys think about this new anime style anthology series about the beloved Lucasfilms property and does it match up with what you thought? Chime in to let them know! From there the boys get cursed in the body of a Child's Play thing with Syfy's newest gay rights icon, Chucky! After that, the boys get ready to shed some tears with the help of Bob the Drag Queen, Shangela, and Eureka as they discuss the second season premiere of HBO's We're Here. Have you watched this season yet? Did you ugly cry or has your soul turned to ash? Let the boys know what you think of this new season on social media! Once the boys get back from a brief station identification they tackle the final topic of the month and it's one of (if not THE) top watched programs from Netflix, Squid Game! The boys dive into the premise, the dub versus sub debate, and whether or not any of the characters were redeemable throughout the show. Pat for sure has some thoughts and questions after binging the entirety of Squid Game in one day. Have you watched the show yet? What would you do for a second season of Squid Game if you were in charge? Sound off in the comments! As always, the boys close out the show with the things that are giving them life, their 1-UPs!Sit back and get ready to FLAME ON! Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/flameon.
