We'll be joined by Michelle Young Doers to discuss her book, Killing for Profit: The Dark Side of Hospice. Michelle is a respiratory therapist who served for 5 years on the ethics committees of 4 major hospitals, she was a clinical instructor, and she worked on the front lines of health care during the SARS outbreak and the swine flu outbreak. In her work, she has played an important role in the living and/or dying of patients with prolonged illnesses and decisions about hospice. The point of her book is not to say that all hospice is bad. In fact, the concept of hospice is great. But, she will discuss the big business of hospice and how to prepare yourself for such a huge decision without being marketed to and manipulated.
Our society is obsessed with stories about crime, and most of the time the more heinous it is, the better. That means that there are millions of dollars to be made off of the retelling of the lives and misdeeds of criminals. Do they have a right to share their stories under free speech protections? Does that include the profit that follows? Or should a consideration of their victims prompt us to forbid such cashing in on crime?
Join us today with special guest, investigative journalist Julian Rademeyer as we discuss his book Killing For Profit, which reads like an international thriller, but is a terrifying true story of greed, corruption, and ruthless criminal enterprise centered around the illegal trafficking of rhino horn and wildlife. This is a compelling, meticulous and revelatory account of one the worlds most secretive trades aiding in the decimation of one of our world's unique endangered species, the Rhino. Since publication, Mr. Rademeyer attended the CITES 2013 in Bangkok, reporting first hand the human folly and convoluted international conservation policies, politics, players and loopholes which undermine the global efforts to save the rhino from extinction.
