While searching the interweb for Rhino documentaries, Robbie came across a TED talk by a professor from the Uiversity of Arkansas Monticello called Elena Rubino talking about Rhinos. He was immediately intrigued as its not a place that one thinks discussions around Rhino Conservation and Trade come from. Robbie reached out, and it turns out the Elena did her Ph.D. work on the perceptions of Trophy Hunting, and naturally that was something he wanted to learn about. Robbie is joined today by Dr. Elena Rubino, a professor at the University of Arkansas-Monticello, to talk about a survey she undertook to understand perceptions around trophy hunting. As you will find out the research is fascinating and really provides some science to what society thinks about hunting writ large. Today, we're taking a deep dive into the heart of hunting and conservation with the CEO of Safari Club International and the Safari Club International Foundation, Laird Hamberlin. In this episode, we unravel the fabric of conservation efforts, debunk myths about hunters merely seeking trophies, and showcase the crucial role hunting plays in wildlife management. We'll discuss why conservation isn't just a word but a practice that hunters are deeply committed to—fueling growth and maintaining balance in animal species worldwide. Laird also tells us about SCI's battles on both federal and state levels, their strategic partnerships, and the critical need to counter false narratives with scientifically backed data. The question that was posed to me was one that we get a lot: Is Trophy Hunting Conservation? Or do people just use that terminology to make themselves feel better about killing animals? This is a great question for the Short Truths. Though the motivation of the individual may not be based in conservation, the action of the individual is conservation, though it may not be the direct motivation. What is conservation? Preservation, sustaining, not wasteful loss of a resource, that has a plan to its management in order to maximize biodiversity. That is a bastardized combination of the Oxford dictionary and the Merriam Websters dictionary; it paints the picture of what conservation actually is - which then begs the question does hunting conform with that definition? So here's my answer ... Do you have a question we can answer on the short truths? Should there be a ban on the importation of the body parts of wild animals, like lion pelts, elephant tusks or zebra hides into Britain? That's a question currently being considered by British lawmakers. Cases like Cecil the Lion - killed by an American dentist in Zimbabwe - have raised concern about the practice worldwide – and the image of white foreigners killing African wildlife disturbs many people. But the leaders of some African countries argue that trophy hunting can be GOOD for the environment. Botswana's environment minister Philda Nani Kereng has been leading a delegation of officials from southern Africa to plead with lawmakers not to pass the law, or at least to make some amendments to it. Botswana has a population of 150,000 elephants, the largest anywhere in the world. So what are the arguments surrounding trophy hunting? PRESENTER: Alan @kasujja GUESTS: Philda Nani Kereng, Botswana's Environment Minister. Polson Majaga, a member of Botswana's parliament representing a community heavily reliant on proceeds from trophy hunting. Henry Smith, the British MP sponsoring the bill.
This past Sunday marked eight years since the killing of Cecil the Lion. Cecil's death started a debate over the humanity of trophy hunting, the killing of wild animals for sport. Earlier this year, MPs voted to stop trophy hunters bringing back the body parts of endangered animals – such as rhino horns - into Britain. However, not everyone agrees with a blanket ban. Some conservationists and local community leaders in parts of Africa warn it unintentionally risks reversing their efforts to grow populations of animals including elephants, lions and the critically endangered black rhino. They also worry bans like this could undermine the livelihoods of people in these rural areas. On the Sky News Daily, Leah Boleto speaks to Jens Ulrik Høgh, who has hunted in Africa dozens of times, and conservationist Maxi Pia Louis, who talks about what communities in Namibia are doing to protect species and their relationship with hunting groups. Plus, Leah is joined by wildlife expert Professor Amy Dickman, from the University of Oxford, to discuss what evidence there is that trophy hunting supports conservation – and we hear from Henry Smith, the MP who put forward the import ban which is currently going through the House of Lords. Trophy hunting is a controversial practice that involves harvesting wild animals for the purpose of obtaining a trophy, such as a mounted head or skin. While some argue that trophy hunting can provide benefits to local communities through revenue and employment opportunities, others believe that it can have negative effects on wildlife populations and ecosystems, and that it is unethical to kill animals for sport or display. Overall, while trophy hunting can have potential benefits, such as revenue generation and employment opportunities. Is the word Trophy doing any benefits to project the industry in a positive light.
The British government has voted to introduce a ban on trophy hunting after the overwhelming backing of many celebrities and controversial incidents such as the Cecil the Lion fiasco back in 2015. However, there are many on the other side of the argument who believe that this ban will actually have the opposite of the desired effect.
