Megan Duckett came to the US with dreams of becoming a rock 'n' roll lighting tech. Unfortunately, that dream was never fully realized, but with the true hustler spirit, Megan carved out her own unique space in soft goods, and has taken her business from an 800-square-foot operation in Torrance to a 50,000-square-foot operation in Compton, employing more than 30 people, making backdrops and custom soft goods for groups like KISS, The Foo Fighters, Guns 'N' Roses, and Kendrick Lamar. In our discussion, we talk about Megan's hustler spirit, the innovative ways she's incorporated technology into her business, her pivot to PPE during COVID, and the importance of finding purpose in the face of adversity.

Who:   Megan Duckett - Founder of Sew What? What We Talked About:  It's Throwback Thursday!  Listen to this classic interview where I talked to Megan Duckett about how she took her kitchen table hobby to celebrity level.  Her portfolio is like a who's who of rock and roll including Katy Perry, Black Sabbath, Sting, Rod Stewart, Josh Groban, Lady Gaga, Alice in Chains, Brittany Spears, Madonna, and more and it all started with lining coffins from her kitchen table. Why I Like Megan:  She's a risk taker.  She says “yes” first and then figures out how to do it afterwards.  She follows her gut.  She follows the projects that sound interesting and she trusts her intuition to bring her to the next level and the next. Great Line:  I think I come from the organic school of business growth. Where to Learn More:  http://www.sewwhatinc.com/ http://www.themindawareshow.com

Featured GuestMegan Duckett, Founder of Sew What, Inc. credits her progressive deployment of innovative technologies in transforming her part-time passion for sewing into a flourishing business and the go-to entertainment and event industries resource for custom theatrical draperies and fabrics. What began with a single sewing machine, now extends to include drapes and backdrops for music superstars including Green Day, Beyonce, Sting and even Lady Gaga. When working with celebrities of such high caliber, first impressions are everything, which created a dilemma for Sew What?, a small company operating out of a little office in Rancho Dominguez, CA. Megan’s crowded workspace outside Los Angeles was hardly an appropriate venue for meetings with her superstar clients and she needed some means to present them with her designs.Sew What? counts on technology to extend their sales reach, deliver topnotch customer service and to increase workforce productivity, so it was only natural that Megan would look to technology for a solution, implementing a remote video conferencing solution. “Now I can reach clients in Hollywood and Nashville from right here in my office,” says Megan.Technology has helped Sew What? bring this innovative business model to market – a model that could be highly beneficial for other entrepreneurs and small companies that do business cross country and even internationally. Rather than spending a large portion of the budget on travel, they could be saving time and money in the long-term by investing in a technology solution.

Power to the Small Business | Branding / Marketing Plans & Ideas / Social Media / Customer Experience Design / Digital Market

Megan Duckett has a great perspective on marketing, but she's not a marketer, at least not professionally. Megan is an entrepreneur and she owns a pretty cool small business called Sew What that makes custom theatrical curtains. She was recently the winner of the Dell Small Business Excellence Award and has some really sensible thoughts about marketing. Take a listen as host Jay Ehret discusses marketing with Sew What owner, Megan Duckett Complete show notes are available on The Marketing Spot Blog: http://bizy.be/fRsf9
