Bishop Michael F. Burbidge prayed with the Basilica of Saint Mary community, in Alexandria, VA, during a Holy Hour hosted by the Saint Katharine Drexel Society on July 28, 2021. This podcast was Bishop Burbidge's reflection during the Holy Hour. The society was founded in June of 2020 in response to recent events of racial injustice. The society prays for the healing of our nation, especially for the historical wounds inflicted by slavery that continue to affect our populace, and in reparation for the sins of racism, past and present. The group prays the Rosary during the Basilica's Holy Hour on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and meets at other times for prayer and fellowship. Father David Dufresne is the group's chaplain. Catholic teaching encourages reparations not only for our own sins, but through the virtue of the Communion of the Saints and the oneness of the mystical Body of Christ, to also make reparation for the sins of others. Through our prayers, we ask God to repair the spiritual damage that has been done and to heal our community, our state, our country, and the world. In Fairfax County, the Family Life Education Curriculum Advisory Committee has proposed changes that Arlington Bishop Michael F. Burbidge calls “almost unbelievable,” including removing clergy from a list of trusted adults students can turn to for advice, and replacing “biological sex” with “sex assigned at birth.” School Board Member Elizabeth Schultz, a mother of four and a parishioner of St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Clifton, sat down to talk about what parents can do to have their voices heard.
A closer look at some of the stories in our latest issue. Arlington Bishop Michael F. Burbidge prayed for First Responders during the 14th annual Blue Mass he celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More Sept. 16. Francis Giaccio, 11, an altar server at St. James Church in Falls Church, mowed the lawn of the Rose Garden Sept. 15, maintaining his concentration even as cameras flashed and the president came to check on the progress.
