When the towing and trucking industries seem locked in an endless cycle of misunderstanding and tension, one Kentucky couple has found a remarkable way to change the conversation – by taking their 50-ton rotator to major truck shows across America.Clifton and Joyce Parsley of Crossroads Towing are on a mission to transform how the trucking community views the towing industry. What began as simply displaying their wrecker with an American flag at the Atlanta Motor Speedway has evolved into a nationwide campaign of goodwill that's winning trophies, changing perceptions, and building bridges between industries that desperately need better relationships."We didn't know what kind of response we would get from taking a rotator wrecker to a trucking show, but it has really been positive," explains Clifton. With their impressive 6x10 American flag illuminated at night by boom lights, they've created a display that draws crowds, sparks conversations, and gives them the opportunity to educate truckers about the realities of the towing business beyond what they see on reality TV.Their story gained even greater depth when Joyce, a registered nurse, was thrust into running the entire business during Clifton's two-month hospitalization with COVID-19. "I knew he was coming home, so I was going to keep his dream alive," she shares. This experience gave her invaluable insights into operations, regulations, and the day-to-day challenges of running a towing company. From participating in Christmas parades with the Grinch on their hook to connecting with veterans who appreciate their patriotic display, the Parsleys demonstrate how community engagement can transform industry relationships. Their advice to fellow towers? Get involved locally, attend both towing and trucking shows, and pursue ongoing education through industry certifications.Join us at the International Towing Museum in Chattanooga on October 9th for a live podcast recording where you can meet industry leaders working to strengthen connections between these essential transportation services. Together, we can change perceptions one conversation at a time.

In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Luca Magnani from Institute of Cancer Research and UNIMI in Milan about his work on epigenetic mechanisms of drug resistance and cancer cell dormancy in breast cancer. We start the interview by putting our focus on his significant contributions to the understanding of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. In a foundational study from 2013, Professor Magnani and his colleagues illuminated the role of genome-wide reprogramming of the chromatin landscape in conferring resistance to endocrine therapy. This research marked a departure from a purely genetic mutation paradigm, proposing instead that epigenetic modifications play a pivotal role in the development of drug resistance. A fascinating part of our conversation centers on the role of pioneer transcription factors, particularly PBX1, in regulating the estrogen receptor's transcriptional response. Professor Magnani explains how PBX1, typically associated with hematopoietic development, influences estrogen receptor activity, thereby shaping the cancer cell's fate and response to treatment. Continuing our exploration, we discuss the critical distinctions between primary and metastatic breast cancer through the lens of epigenetic reprogramming. By analyzing samples from women with breast cancer, Professor Magnani's work identifies specific enhancer usage that marks the transition to a drug-resistant state which was a breakthrough in linking epigenetic alterations to real-world patient outcomes. He emphasizes that the reliance on genetic mutations alone does not adequately explain the mechanisms of drug resistance, pushing the field to consider the epigenetic landscape more deeply. Our conversation also touches on the evolution of experimental techniques. Professor Magnani shares insights into the transition from traditional ChIP-seq methods to CUT&RUN, demonstrating the need for techniques that cater to the limited material available from clinical samples. This adaptability mirrors the dynamic nature of cancer itself, as cells continuously evolve under therapeutic pressure. As we traverse through the complexities of dormancy and reactivation in cancer cells, Professor Magnani enlightens us on the unpredictable nature of tumor behavior. He describes how cancer cells can enter dormant states and how their awakening is influenced by environmental factors, akin to an evolutionary response to stressors, thus revealing the intricate balance between survival and proliferation. In the latter part of the episode, we explore Professor Magnani's vision for the future of breast cancer research, which includes the need for better animal models that mimic human disease. His pursuit of understanding estrogen receptor behavior both in healthy and cancerous cells reflects a holistic approach to cancer biology, aiming to decipher the transition from normal tissue to malignancy. Join Will and his friend Pierre for a walking-and-talking podcast recorded against the stunning backdrop of some Renosterveld in Cape Town. In this free-flowing conversation, they explore creativity, strategy, and the value of embracing your uniqueness in a world increasingly dominated by AI. Pierre shares his journey of compiling four years of daily letters into a book, his philosophy of “tracking desire” to guide the creative process, and why weirdness is often the most powerful business differentiator. They discuss the pitfalls of competing solely on price, speed, or quality, and why identity and differentiation matter more than ever. Along the way, the two friends reflect on parenting, the fleeting nature of time with children, and the importance of taking ownership of your own agency. From productivity systems using Apple Notes to the benefits of cold plunges and winter hiking crews, this episode blends business insights with personal reflections topped off with a few unexpected ostrich sightings.Speaker Notes: 1. Opening & Setting the Scene (00:00 – 02:10) Greeting listeners; casual “walking and talking” intro. Location: Renosterveld with panoramic views towards Stellenbosch. Multi-tasking mindset: walking + podcast + errands.2. Pierre's Current Project (02:11 – 04:30) Compiling daily letters from 2020–2024 into a 365-entry book. Project is more editing and aligning than creating from scratch. Letters span pre-COVID, COVID, and post-COVID years. 3. Pierre's Creative Process (04:31 – 07:10) Start with the desired future state; “tracking desire” like tracking an animal. Use emotion and gut instinct as creative compass. Embrace randomness and weirdness as creative fuel. 4. Three Ways to Win in Business (07:11 – 11:45) First: Rare and risky, but massively rewarding. Best: Often vague, can lead to “cheaper, faster, nicer” race to the bottom. Different: The most sustainable advantage; uniqueness removes direct competition. Link to “Category of One” concept. 5. AI & Human Uniqueness (11:46 – 14:30) AI will be faster and smarter but will never be “you.” Your wiring, experiences, and quirks are irreplaceable. Quote: “The only way to beat the agents is to use your agency.” 6. Parenting & Time Perspective (14:31 – 16:05) Shocking stat: By age 17, you've spent 90% of the time you'll have with your kids. Encourages being present and intentional with time. 7. Pierre's Background (16:06 – 18:40) Self-described “philosopher disguised as a strategist.” Focus: helping businesses and individuals find their differentiator. Meeting Will at Alchemy on the day Pierre was retrenched. 8. Systems for Capturing Ideas (18:41 – 22:30) Apple Notes with structured folders and smart tagging. Siri + Reminders to capture on-the-go ideas. Always-on capture to avoid losing sparks of inspiration. 9. Value Creation vs. Noise (22:31 – 24:00) Importance of delivering real value over social media posturing. Sermons, talks, and deadlines as productive cadence. 10. Cold Showers, Hiking, and Seasonal Crews (24:01 – 26:15) Will's weekly Lion's Head hikes: summer selfie crowd vs. winter hardcore crew. Pierre's Clifton cold plunge tradition. 11. Closing Thoughts (26:16 – End) Biggest takeaway: Don't fear your own agency. Make decisions and take responsibility before others (brands, AI, governments) do it for you. Wrap-up: coffee plans, shared photos of the walk and where to find more from both hosts. Will https://www.linkedin.com/in/willgreen/Pierre https://www.linkedin.com/in/pierredup/Pierre's Daily Letters: https://thisispierre.co/

Let us know what you think of the latest episode of Distinct Nostalgia by clicking here and sending us a messageAhead of the launch of the epic new landmark drama about the decision to drop the first atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, Clifton Truman Daniel chats to Ashley Byrne about playing his grandfather in The President and the Emperor. Clifton talks candidly about his relationship with his grandpa and how he learned about his family history when he was growing up. He also reflects on the impact the decision his grandfather made has had on the world and on the work he's done to foster peace the region.Clifton Truman Daniel is in conversation with Ashley Byrne.A Made in Manchester Production Coming soon ....The President and The Emperor brings to life the story behind one of the most consequential decisions in modern history, the dropping of the atomic bomb eighty years ago.Told in seven parts and produced by indie company Made in Manchester, the series draws on newly declassified US and Japanese documents, along with first-hand testimony, to present a dual-perspective account of the final days of the Second World War.At the heart of the drama are two isolated but powerful figures, President Harry S. Truman and Emperor Hirohito. They navigate moral and political dilemmas as the world teeters on the brink of nuclear devastation. In a unique casting move, Truman is portrayed by his real-life grandson, Clifton Truman Daniel, adding an intimate connection to a role few could approach with such personal insight. He stars alongside acclaimed Japanese actor Sadao Ueda, who plays Hirohito with quiet intensity and emotional nuance.“This drama is not about who was right or wrong in the war,” Ueda says. “It presents historical facts dramatically from two different points of view. I hope the listener will reflect on what global conflict might mean if it ever happened again.”Samuel Barnett plays Robert OppenheimerThe President and the Emperor is written by Guy Smith, directed by Jonathan Kydd and produced by Ashley Byrne. The Executive Producer is Kurt Brookes.Guy Smith says: ''I wanted to find out what really took place behind the scenes in Washington and Tokyo in the weeks leading up to the most momentous - and controversial - decision in the history of modern warfare; the order to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. And, just as importantly, I wanted to find out if that world changing event could have been avoided. Was it inevitable? Or could the conflict have been ended without the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki? The more I dug into the archives and examined first hand accounts of those who were there at the White House and Imperial Palace, I discovered an extraordinary story full of intrigue, drama and turmoil. Now, as the world once again moves closer to the threat of nuclear conflict than at any time since the Cold War, I hope The President and the Emperor provides listeners with a timely warning on the dangers of escalating tensions and failing to explore all possible opportunities to stop man's inhumanity to man.'With thanks to:The National Security Archive, Washington DChttps://nsarchive.gwu.eduThe Harry S Truman Library, Independence, MOhttps://www.trumanlibrary.govSupport the show
