What if the air around your home could become a reliable source of clean water? In this eye-opening episode, we sit down with Brian Chang, CEO and founder of Aquaria — the company building atmospheric water generators that turn humidity into clean, drinkable water. We explore:• How Aquaria's systems produce water from air using principles HVAC pros already understand• Why water scarcity is becoming a growing concern in communities across the country• How mechanical contractors could play a key role in installing and supporting this emerging technology• What makes air-to-water systems different from standard dehumidification• Why homeowners are using air water for drinking, cooking and even showering• How this innovation could help in urgent situations like the current water crisis in Corpus ChristiBrian and Clifton break down how a standalone outdoor unit can produce up to 250 gallons of water a day, connect to a home's existing plumbing, and deliver filtered, high-quality water on demand. Whether you're a contractor, engineer or simply an interested student, this conversation offers an eye-popping look at where the trade is heading.Learn more about Aquaria by reaching out to Brian directly on LinkedIn.#HVAC #Innovation #ESCO #ESCOInstitute--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today, Theo Ellington is the secretary at the Ruth Williams Opera House. This born-and-raised San Franciscan is also running to be the next D10 supervisor. In Part 1 of this episode, meet Theo. His maternal grandfather, Clifton Weeks, came to SF because his sister, Marie Weeks (Theo's great-aunt), had come here. Clifton and his sister had grown up in rural Natchez, Mississippi, but they came out West during the Great Migration. Their first landing spot was The Fillmore. Clifton found work as a laborer, where he helped build roads and bridges. He also did a little work at the shipyard back when it was still in The City. He had three daughters and made enough money to be able to buy a house in Bayview. Theo grew up in that house with his aunts and cousins. Theo's dad, Grant Ellington, a veteran, came here from Cleveland as an adult. While Theo isn't 100 percent sure what the story is, his parents say that they met at a party … in the Eighties, no less. Grant was a big dude, 6'5", and he commanded a presence. Grant would come by the house, Theo says, and seemed overly concerned with whether his son had a girlfriend. Theo would get that question as young as 6. His dad passed away when Theo was in high school. Theo has two brothers—one older and one younger. He was the third-youngest among the 10 cousins living in his house at Third and Palou. They grew up pre-internet, and so, like a lot of us, went out and made up their own games. He and his cousins and their friends would stay out until the streetlights came on. Theo goes an aside about one of the games they invented—"baserunner." They rode bikes and skateboards, as well. He was born in 1988 and went to a lot of school all in The Bayview. Because he's born-and-raised, I ask Theo to rattle off the schools he attended: Charles Drew Elementary, afterschool at Leola Havard, and Gloria R. Davis Middle School, where he helped make a documentary on a grant from Salesforce about the 24-Divisadero called Bus 24 "The Diversity Bus." It's very much worth watching. That experience really helped to shape Theo's perspective. He started to see his neighborhood, The Bayview, in a different light. And he saw the rest of The City. It sparked a curiosity in him—why was his own hood living in such poverty while other parts of SF thrived? Theo was in the top of his class at Davis Middle School. He began high school at Sacred Heart, and suddenly found himself at the bottom of his class. Drawing from his experience making the Muni documentary, for his junior year, he transferred to School of the Arts (SOTA), where he could focus less on academics and more on filmmaking and documentaries. When he was a kid, Theo had done some acting with American Conservatory Theater (ACT) and WB TV, back when they had a studio in The Bayview. He spent two years in SoCal at Marymount College. One aspect he appreciated as a young freshman was the townhouse dorms, which felt less like typical college dorms and more like adult homes. The move served two goals—go to college, but also, pursue his dream of working in the film industry. While at Marymount, Theo worked at the local Boys and Girls Club, where he and others helped young boys who lacked role models. The experience allowed him to see how life in Southern California was different than life in his hometown. Check back Thursday for Part 2 and the conclusion of Theo Ellington's story. We recorded this podcast at the Bayview Opera House in Bayview in November 2025. Photography by Jeff Hunt

Big changes are coming to the plumbing and HVAC trades — and the people who train for them now will lead tomorrow. In this energetic episode, we chat with Marty Kuerzi and David McConnell from UA Local 502 about how two industries are converging and what that means for the next generation of skilled workers. We explore:• How plumbing and HVAC trades are blending as new technologies hit the market• The coming shift to heat pump water heaters and air-to-water monobloc systems• Why apprenticeships, certifications and cross-trade training matter more than ever• The role of unions and UA Local 502 in preparing workers for industry change• Why contractors who invest in education will thrive while others fall behindMarty, David and Clifton share an honest, ground-level look at the skills, mindset and teamwork it takes to adapt. They talk about embracing change instead of fearing it, leaning on younger talent with new tech skills, and refusing to "pull up the ladder" on the next generation. If you're a contractor, apprentice, educator or industry leader, this conversation offers practical insight for you on where the trades are heading.Learn more about UA Local 502 and the work they're doing to train the next wave of skilled professionals at lu502.com.#HVAC #Plumbing #SkilledTrades #ESCO #ESCOInstitute #UALocal502--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trainers are living through another major shift.AI is moving fast. Companies are looking for faster ways to build courses, reduce costs, and implement new tools. And once again, training departments may be one of the first places leaders look when they want to save money. So what should trainers do?In this episode of Lessons from Learning Leaders, I talk with Clifton Clarke III, Chief Learning Strategist for ATD Detroit and founder of Detroit Learning Solutions, about his ATD session Pivot or Perish and what trainers need to do in a changing workplace.Clifton's path into training started the way many L&D careers do: almost by accident. Someone saw something in him, gave him a chance, and he discovered the fulfillment that comes from helping people get better at their work. That sense of service runs through the entire conversation. As Clifton puts it, training is about helping people improve their jobs, feed their families, and increase their livelihood. We talk about:* How Clifton found his way into corporate training* Why trainers need to adapt instead of panic* What AI means for L&D professionals* Why trainers must advocate for frontline employees* How to partner with leadership during change* Why staying calm is part of the trainer's job* What trainers need to learn before they can lead others through changeClifton offers three practical moves for trainers right now: stay calm, ask better questions, and learn the tools inside and out. His point is not that AI should be ignored or feared. His point is that trainers have to understand it well enough to guide the organization, protect employees from bad implementation, and help leaders make smarter decisions. This conversation is a reminder that training is not about protecting the way we have always done things. It is about helping people move forward without losing sight of the humans doing the work.If you are a trainer, facilitator, instructional designer, or L&D leader wondering where you fit in the AI shift, this episode is worth your time.If this conversation would help another trainer, facilitator, instructional designer, or L&D leader, share it with them. I have written thousands of words about the joys of eating hot dogs, so when Memorial Day rolls around, this serious eater's thoughts immediately turn to the humble frankfurter. A couple of years ago we had my friend and fellow food writer J.J. Goode on Special Sauce to talk about our love for the hot dog in all its forms, including the many regional styles we both have encountered along the way. We talked about hot dog styles both ubiquitous and obscure, from the famous Chicago hot dogs with french fries on top at Gene and Jude's near O'Hare Airport to the deep-fried hot dogs poetically known as rippers at Rutt's Hut in Clifton, N.J. So to honor this most humble of foods from around the country and the world as we head into Memorial Day weekend we decided to reheat one of J.J.'s terrifically entertaining and informative episodes about our mutual love of hot dogs. And just for the record I still have two Gray's Papaya hot dogs for lunch a couple of times a week. Please don't tell my cardiologist...or my wife. Summer cometh: the grills get scraped clean, the buns are split, and hungry Americans get set to boil or broil their wursts, wieners, and sausages. In the summer of 2021, Jamie Loftus drove from coast to coast, tasting the vast array of hot dogs that America has to offer, consuming as many as four a day—and in one notable (or regrettable) instance, five. Chicago-style and the Coney Island special; drive-through and deli; chili and chile: Loftus devoured them all. Her ensuing book, Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot Dogs, brings the glory and the gory. It may be the first to detail not only the different genders of pickle jars one can buy at a gas station, but also the horrific treatment of animals and workers at slaughterhouses, conditions that got distinctly worse during the pandemic. Today we'll talk about Cape Town, South Africa, Part 1 of 2 Welcome to the  Dr. Mary Travelbest Guide podcast. A few weeks ago, I returned from a 90-day journey around the world, and I'm excited to connect with fellow travelers and share experiences. The FAQ is: Carolyn asked me about traveling and how to improve her posture while traveling. I thought about all of the times I look down at my screens and slouch as a habit I want to break, too. So thanks for the question, Carolyn. To improve posture, here is my response. Answer: Here is a short routine for neck mobility and posture, because "tech neck" and looking down at phones can worsen the appearance of neck lines and make the area muscles tighter. Cleveland Clinic recommends regular neck movement and posture work for tech neck, and Harvard notes posture-focused stretching can help mobility. A simple travel routine you do a few minutes a day while on the go. Chin tuck: Sit tall, pull your head straight back like you are making a double chin. Hold 5 seconds, repeat 8–10 times. Neck rotations: Slowly turn right, center, left. Repeat 5 times on each side. Cleveland Clinic also describes slow neck circles/rotations for the neck area. Side neck stretch: Ear toward shoulder, hold 15–20 seconds each side, 2 rounds. Shoulder blade squeeze: Pull shoulder blades gently back and down for 5 seconds, 10 reps. Seated chest stretch: Clasp hands behind you and lift slightly to open the chest; Harvard describes this as a posture stretch. Hold 10 seconds, repeat 2–4 times. Those exercises help mobility, tension, and posture, which can make your neck look better, One small caution: stop the stretches if you get pain, tingling, numbness, dizziness, or headaches, and get checked if neck stiffness is severe or persistent. Neck mobility work should feel gentle, not aggressive.   60-second confidence challenge Your challenge today, Confidence Challenge in Cape Town, Part 1 of 2  If you like today's Confidence Challenge, my book series delves into how to get exercise while traveling. See the 5 steps to solo travel, from easy to more challenging, with tips and all of my mistakes, too See Book A for healthy travel, and Book B for great destinations. Soon, C will be joining them with adventures for you to experience around the world. Find it on the website at https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com/ or on Amazon. Look for the pre-order info for Book C. It will be available for pre-order soon.   Today's destination is Cape Town, South Africa, Part 1 of 2 Start with Table Mountain. You should not skip Table Mountain. The day I went was foggy, cold, and rainy, but the views were still great. On the way up the cable car, I met two guys who were planning to BASE jump off the mountain, which is a bit like skydiving but from a mountain. See the link. It's very dangerous. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3C4csBc90V8 A safer alternative is to take the cable car if conditions are clear or almost clear. It was a joy to be taken up to the top and explore the views from above, learn the history, and even have lunch there if you like. And here's the catch: weather changes fast. If you wait for the "perfect day," you may miss it. So go early. Stay flexible. I recommend you take the Hop-on Hop-off bus around Cape Town and explore with a guided tour from the double-decker. I did that, plus the wharf, art museums, Aquarium with jellyfish and shark exhibits, and the beach, of course. The Red line takes you to Table Mountain. Robben Island was closed for repairs, so it should be open now. Worth seeing is Robben Island, located in Table Bay near Cape Town, South Africa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous as the former maximum-security prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 years of his 27 years in prison. Now a museum symbolizing the triumph of democracy over apartheid, it offers tours guided by former political prisoners.  The wharf was excellent. Sea-faring boats such as those you would see in San Francisco or Boston. Let's talk about the beach. Along Camp Bay, I walked on the beach. I saw lots of artists selling paintings here. They were mostly people who were starving and unemployed, so they became entrepreneurs. People standing in the street with cups for coins.  Drive—or hire a driver—to experience: ●      Chapman's Peak Drive ●      Cape of Good Hope https://www.sanparks.org/parks/table-mountain/what-to-do/attractions/cape-of-good-hope-cape-point   Now, let's be practical. Cape Town is not a "wander anywhere" city. Stick to: ●      V&A Waterfront ●      Sea Point Promenade https://www.waterfront.co.za/? Clifton and Camps Bay are stunning. But don't confuse beauty with safety. Go during the day. Stay aware. Leave before dark. I swam in Fish Hoek, and it was chilly, but so refreshing and safe, too. https://www.capetown.gov.za/Family%20and%20home/see-all-city-facilities/our-recreational-facilities/Beaches/Fish-Hoek-Beach  My missteps: Travel Mistakes to Avoid: TSA delays   This around-the-world trip had a few TSA security stops, but in the last few years I have been stopped for bringing all kinds of items across the border. The most recent stop was for spices, traveling in a sealed container, at the border.  Next time I carry spices, I'll check that bag. The TSA spent 5 minutes checking my spice for tampering on the way to Taiwan last month.   AI was used to select some of the suggestions for this episode.   Connect with Dr. Travelbest 5 Steps to Solo Travel website Dr. Mary Travelbest X Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram Dr. Mary Travelbest Podcast Dr. Travelbest on TikTok Dr.Travelbest on YouTube In the news

A bracing account of how our current planetary crisis emerged from the worst cataclysmic destruction in human history, which Clifton Crais terms the Mortecene—the killing age. We are used to speaking of the Anthropocene and the outsized impact humans have had on the planet. But we sometimes lose sight of a fundamental truth at the heart of modern world history: the legacy of human predation, slavery, and imperialism that has devastated the natural world and led us to our present moment. As historian Clifton Crais shows in this magisterial work The Killing Age: How Violence Made the Modern World (U Chicago Press, 2025), the period that we most associate with human progress—which gave us the Enlightenment, the rise of democracies, the Industrial Revolution, and more—was at the same time catastrophically destructive. In this bracing, landmark book, Crais urges us to view the growth of global capitalism between 1750 and the early 1900s not as the Anthropocene, but as the Mortecene: the Killing Age. Killing brought the world together and tore it apart, as profiteering warlords committed mass-scale slaughter of humans and animals across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The newfound ease and profitability of killing created a disturbing network of global connections and economies, eliminating tens of millions of people and sparking an environmental crisis that remains the most urgent catastrophe facing the world today.Drawing on years of scholarship and marshaling myriad sources across world history, The Killing Age (University of Chicago Press 2025) turns our vision of past and present on its head, illuminating the Mortecene in all its horror—how it shaped who we are, what we value and fear, and the precarious present we inhabit today. Our guest is Professor Clifton Crais, a Professor of History at Emory University Our host is Eleonora Mattiacci, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Amherst College.
