fWotD Episode 3067: Stockton and Darlington Railway Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 27 September 2025, is Stockton and Darlington Railway. The Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR) was a railway company that operated in north-east England from 1825 to 1863. The world's first public railway to use steam locomotives, its first line connected collieries near Shildon with Darlington and Stockton in County Durham, and was officially opened on 27 September 1825. The movement of coal to ships rapidly became a lucrative business, and the line was soon extended to a new port at Middlesbrough. While coal waggons were hauled by steam locomotives from the start, passengers were carried in coaches drawn by horses until carriages hauled by steam locomotives were introduced in 1833.The S&DR was involved in building the East Coast Main Line between York and Darlington, but its main expansion was at Middlesbrough Docks and west into Weardale and east to Redcar. It suffered severe financial difficulties at the end of the 1840s and was nearly taken over by the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway, before the discovery of iron ore in Cleveland and the subsequent increase in revenue meant it could pay its debts. At the beginning of the 1860s it took over railways that had crossed the Pennines to join the West Coast Main Line at Tebay and Clifton, near Penrith. The company was taken over by the North Eastern Railway in 1863, transferring 200 route miles (320 route kilometres) of line and about 160 locomotives, but continued to operate independently as the Darlington Section until 1876. S&DR opening was seen as proof of steam railway effectiveness and its anniversary was celebrated in 1875, 1925 and 1975. Much of the original route is now served by the Tees Valley Line, operated by Northern. In 2025, the Stockton and Darlington Railway celebrates the 200th anniversary of its opening. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Saturday, 27 September 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Stockton and Darlington Railway on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Danielle.
In this episode of Book Talk, I interview Ash Clifton, a debut author from Gainesville, Florida, about his intense thriller, Twice The Trouble. I like to compare this novel to works by Michael Cane, Tom Clancy, and Daniel Silva. Ash shares his journey of becoming a writer, inspired by his father's role as Chief of Police and Ash's exposure to former football players on his college team. He discusses the creation of his complex protagonist, a former cop and football player. Ash also talks about the challenges he faced, including cutting characters and scenes based on his agent's recommendations, and how he managed to keep the story engaging. He emphasizes the importance of a hero being both good at heart and having a sense of humor. Additional topics include the writing process, dealing with self-doubt, and his aspirations for a movie adaptation of the book.Connect with Ash CliftonX | Facebook | Instagram | BlueSkyWant to watch this interview? In the days of British Rail and Virgin Trains, the iconic and spectacular Settle & Carlisle railway line was used as a diversionary route whenever there were closures for engineering works or similar on the West Coast Main Line between Preston and Carlisle. The Settle & Carlisle line has not been used for diversions for a decade however, much to the displeasure of communities along the route as well as rail enthusiasts and others who believe an opportunity is being missed to keep people on trains and avoid the dreaded rail replacement buses. Now, there is good news. Thanks to collaboration betweenAvanti West Coast, Network Rail, Northern trains, TransPennine Express, CrossCountry, LNER and others, the Settle & Carlisle line WILL be used to run a shuttle service between Preston and Carlisle in January 2026 when both the West Coast Main Line and the M6 are closed at Clifton for the replacement of a major viaduct. On Wednesday 20 August, Avanti West Coast ran a very special test train over the Settle & Carlisle line to prove it worked and Green Signals was amongst a very select group invited on board.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdInstagram -https://instagram.com/greensignallersThe views and opinions expressed by any guests or interviewees on this channel / podcast are strictly their own and should not be assumed to reflect those of the hosts, the management or the Directors of Green Signals. Send us a textWant to see more mature bucks during daylight hours this season? Clifton Denny from On Your Own Outdoors reveals game-changing tactics that fly in the face of conventional deer hunting wisdom. The most eye-opening revelation? Mature bucks aren't actually "going nocturnal" - they're simply responding to patterns hunters unknowingly establish. Clifton explains how the common practice of filling feeders after work at 5-6pm is precisely why your target buck only appears on camera at night. By shifting your feeding schedule to 10pm and changing your bait type right before hunting, you create the perfect scenario for daylight encounters. The conversation unveils the power of "fat lines" - those mysterious thicker contour lines on topographical maps that consistently mark high deer activity zones. What started as a theory has been field-tested with remarkable success, with hunters reporting mature buck sightings exactly where these terrain features appear on maps. Clifton's comprehensive breakdown of this approach gives listeners a significant advantage for early season success.Beyond technical strategies, the episode dives into fascinating observations about deer behavior during velvet-shedding period, bachelor group dispersal, and critical early-season food sources like persimmon and honey locust trees. The discussion even addresses regional hunting differences, with practical advice for Arkansas hunters looking to adapt their skills to different terrains.Whether you're a weekend warrior or a dedicated trophy hunter, these practical, field-tested approaches will transform your early season strategy. After implementing these tactics, you'll never look at your hunting property - or your trail camera results - the same way again.GUEST WEBSITE: https://www.onyourownoutdoors.comGUEST YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/c/cliftondenneyonyourownoutdoorsOUR WEBSITE/OTC MERCH: https://offtheclockwithbscott.comHAVOC GEAR SHOP: https://havocnation.comHAVOC BOATS WEBSITE: https://havocboats.comHAVOC DEALERS: https://havocboats.com/dealers/WREAKIN' HAVOC CREW WEBSITE: https://wreakinhavoccrew.comSOCIAL LINKSTruth Social: https://truthsocial.com/@OffTheClockwithBScottFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Off-The-Clock-With-B-Scott/61557737220814/Twitter (X): https://twitter.com/OTCwithBScottInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/offtheclockwithbscott/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwu6_wWcXDoBzhpHv4YgZGQRumble: https://rumble.com/c/c-5644782Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2g76hRDp9d609LETevSH2U?si=0ba23ae282c94e88&nd=1&dlsi=d9f84d7699b84724Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/off-the-clock-with-b-scott/id1734265760

If you work for a large company, odds are you already took this test. You can also find that link in the show description. Even corporate America realizes you are coded uniquely. It only makes sense if they invest in you that they would want to maximize your strengths. So are you maximizing your strengths for your Ultimate Power Source, Creator, Abba? Are you overflowing with Joy? Are you content in all circumstances? Well, then you and I have some more exploration to do. On the flip side, I meet way too many dudes that are down and out. If that is you, you are definitely not alone. You are in the majority. Why? You are leaning too much on your own understanding and the rest of the broken people on this broken planet. Odds are you are also leaning on some kind of substance to mask your hurts and what you are missing. Next Steps: Listen to the series mentioned "Maximizing Your Strengths". When the towing and trucking industries seem locked in an endless cycle of misunderstanding and tension, one Kentucky couple has found a remarkable way to change the conversation – by taking their 50-ton rotator to major truck shows across America.Clifton and Joyce Parsley of Crossroads Towing are on a mission to transform how the trucking community views the towing industry. What began as simply displaying their wrecker with an American flag at the Atlanta Motor Speedway has evolved into a nationwide campaign of goodwill that's winning trophies, changing perceptions, and building bridges between industries that desperately need better relationships."We didn't know what kind of response we would get from taking a rotator wrecker to a trucking show, but it has really been positive," explains Clifton. With their impressive 6x10 American flag illuminated at night by boom lights, they've created a display that draws crowds, sparks conversations, and gives them the opportunity to educate truckers about the realities of the towing business beyond what they see on reality TV.Their story gained even greater depth when Joyce, a registered nurse, was thrust into running the entire business during Clifton's two-month hospitalization with COVID-19. "I knew he was coming home, so I was going to keep his dream alive," she shares. This experience gave her invaluable insights into operations, regulations, and the day-to-day challenges of running a towing company. From participating in Christmas parades with the Grinch on their hook to connecting with veterans who appreciate their patriotic display, the Parsleys demonstrate how community engagement can transform industry relationships. Their advice to fellow towers? Get involved locally, attend both towing and trucking shows, and pursue ongoing education through industry certifications.Join us at the International Towing Museum in Chattanooga on October 9th for a live podcast recording where you can meet industry leaders working to strengthen connections between these essential transportation services. Together, we can change perceptions one conversation at a time.

In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Luca Magnani from Institute of Cancer Research and UNIMI in Milan about his work on epigenetic mechanisms of drug resistance and cancer cell dormancy in breast cancer. We start the interview by putting our focus on his significant contributions to the understanding of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. In a foundational study from 2013, Professor Magnani and his colleagues illuminated the role of genome-wide reprogramming of the chromatin landscape in conferring resistance to endocrine therapy. This research marked a departure from a purely genetic mutation paradigm, proposing instead that epigenetic modifications play a pivotal role in the development of drug resistance. A fascinating part of our conversation centers on the role of pioneer transcription factors, particularly PBX1, in regulating the estrogen receptor's transcriptional response. Professor Magnani explains how PBX1, typically associated with hematopoietic development, influences estrogen receptor activity, thereby shaping the cancer cell's fate and response to treatment. Continuing our exploration, we discuss the critical distinctions between primary and metastatic breast cancer through the lens of epigenetic reprogramming. By analyzing samples from women with breast cancer, Professor Magnani's work identifies specific enhancer usage that marks the transition to a drug-resistant state which was a breakthrough in linking epigenetic alterations to real-world patient outcomes. He emphasizes that the reliance on genetic mutations alone does not adequately explain the mechanisms of drug resistance, pushing the field to consider the epigenetic landscape more deeply. Our conversation also touches on the evolution of experimental techniques. Professor Magnani shares insights into the transition from traditional ChIP-seq methods to CUT&RUN, demonstrating the need for techniques that cater to the limited material available from clinical samples. This adaptability mirrors the dynamic nature of cancer itself, as cells continuously evolve under therapeutic pressure. As we traverse through the complexities of dormancy and reactivation in cancer cells, Professor Magnani enlightens us on the unpredictable nature of tumor behavior. He describes how cancer cells can enter dormant states and how their awakening is influenced by environmental factors, akin to an evolutionary response to stressors, thus revealing the intricate balance between survival and proliferation. In the latter part of the episode, we explore Professor Magnani's vision for the future of breast cancer research, which includes the need for better animal models that mimic human disease. His pursuit of understanding estrogen receptor behavior both in healthy and cancerous cells reflects a holistic approach to cancer biology, aiming to decipher the transition from normal tissue to malignancy.
