Leaving The Valley
Ep. 040 : Shame & Suicide

Leaving The Valley

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 21, 2021 47:05

Shame around suicide is pervasive and exists in many different forms. We may feel ashamed if we lost someone to suicide. We may feel shame if we've ever had suicidal thoughts. We sometimes even use shame as a tactic to try and stop someone from taking their own life. We talk with Dr. Jana Tran, psychologist, about shame. Dr. Tran has spent many years serving high-risk groups for suicide through her work at the VA and serving First Responders at the Houston Fire Department. Dr. Tran examines the message "suicide is selfish." It is harder to seek help when there is no safe space to talk about how badly you feel without getting shamed. Additionally, those who have lost someone to suicide may also feel ashamed. (However unwarranted those feelings may be).

Jorge Moral, a veteran firefighter for the past 30 years, used to think he had a drinking problem. It's something many firefighters struggle with — turning to the bottle in response to on-the-job stress and, in more extreme cases, trauma and PTSD. Only for Jorge, he realized it wasn't actually a drinking problem he had. It was a sleeping problem.   “I was using alcohol to try to go to bed, because I went two or three years of just taking naps,” he says. “I would take a nap at night, maybe a couple of hours, and that's it.”    Ultimately, Jorge decided to try CBD to treat his insomnia — and he's never looked back. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Jorge talk about the ways CBD has helped him with his recovery as a first responder, the coping mechanisms it's allowed him to let go of (including Adderall), and why he sees CBD as a piece of the puzzle (but not the entire answer).   What You'll Learn: The role CBD played in his recovery when Jorge (drunkenly, at a wedding) decided to donate his kidney What else he's turned to, besides CBD, to improve his sleep hygiene Why it's important that more first responders have stigma-free access to CBD and THC And much more!   Favorite Quote:   “CBD is not the answer to everything, but it's a tool to get you to the answer.” — Jorge Moral   Connect with Jorge:    Facebook   Instagram   How to Get Involved:   Gary Roberts is the founder and CEO of Pure Body Zen, a company based around creating and selling high-quality CBD products that work to heal mind and body alike. Gary considers hemp-based medicine a calling, and his organization, along with the world-class team that runs it, reflects his passion.   You can learn more about Pure Body Zen on their site, on LinkedIn and on Instagram.   If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to visit the show on Apple Podcasts and leave a rating and review! When I moved from the big city to a rural community,  I suspected that the fire department here had to operate differently.  From my first day in the area, I started noticing many differences. I didn't see any fire hydrants and I knew my residential water came from a pretty small water department.  It seemed there was always a brush fire or some type of structure fire off in the distance. Less than a half mile down the road from my home, I saw a fire station…. next to a major interstate. Almost everyday, a fire engine roared by my house followed by a tanker. The sides of the apparatus read "WCFPD."  That was about the extent of my knowledge about this fire department... until a few months later...when my, then, 18 year old son started volunteering as a fire fighter there.Williamson County Fire Protection District or WCFPD may be small when compared to big city fire departments but I soon discovered that it is actually an amazing fire department and serves it's community well here in Southern Illinois.  Their  training, the emergency response… is second to none…..which includes Hazmat, Aircraft Rescue  and Firefighting (ARFF), wild land firefighting, rescue…. automotive , structure fires of any size…. and always some unique calls that are found only in rural America.   To provide such a service to the community takes leadership.  Williamson County Fire Protection District has that experienced leadership …. and many are volunteers.  In this Emergency FD storyline podcast, I talk to the man at the top… Chief Jeremy Norris.Innovative Firefighting: The Volunteer Heroes…-Tom MannHost & Executive ProducerEMERGENCYFD STORYLINE  Storylines guests include:   Chief Jeremy Norris- Williamson County Fire Protection DistrictWilliamson County, IllinoisGo to emergencyfd.com for more podcasts.Support EmergencyFD Storyline at emergencyfd.comEmail EmergencyFD Storyline:  storyline@emergencyfd.comSupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=4ZST3HRUMZG36)PPE provided to the EmergencyFD video team by MSAAt MSA, our business is safety. Today we hear the Combat Story of Dr. Dan Pronk, a former Australian SAS doctor who completed four tours to Afghanistan. Do not be fooled by the doctor title, Dan was on the front lines conducting hundreds of operations with the elite SAS. This is the first of two interviews with Dan. Before the military, Dan was a triathlete and lived what he described as an average Australian upbringing. The military put him through medical school, but he wanted to be part of the elite SAS and fought for years for a chance to just get to selection, which he eventually did. Since leaving the military, Dan has gone on to an executive role in medical management, as well as co-owning the multimillion dollar company TacMed Australia and founding several other entrepreneurial startups. He's written several books, including Average 70kg Dickhead: Motivational Lessons from an Ex-Army Special Forces Doctor, and Arterial Tourniquets: For Police Officers, Law Enforcement and other First-Responders. He just released a third book with two fellow former SAS operators called Resilience Shield. Dan's also a motorhead with a love of high performance cars, leading him to own a classic Ferrari and Lamborghini. He also created Delta Automotive that builds these limited edition classic sports cars. Dan was referred to me by another SAS leader as “legend” in the community and I hope you enjoy this first of two Combat Story rounds with Dan as much as I did. In the US, a little over 50% of marriages end in divorce. In a first responder family, that number spikes to 60-70%. Figuring out a co-parenting schedule when you work a 9-5 job is hard enough as it is, but when you factor in the schedule of a first responder parent, things can get even trickier. But don't worry - there are ways to design a parenting plan in a first responder family that will give your kids the consistency they deserve, our guest Susan Guthrie shares, and it starts with building flexibility into your plan. The tips Susan shares in this episode are incredible, and can be applied to all parenting plans as well. Susan Guthrie, nationally recognized as one of the Top Family Law and Mediation Attorneys in the United States, has been helping individuals and families navigate separation and divorce for more than 30 years. The Biden administration continues to push the narrative that Border Patrol agents on horses used whips against illegal migrants. Border Patrol agents are FURIOUS with President Biden's threat to make agents “pay.” Did this administration start a war between the agents and the federal government? A Disney park actor playing the role of Gaston told a guest to “leave” after she touched his chest. Yes, the fan didn't read the room, but to be this WOKE and OFFENDED is ridiculous. This actor not only breaks character but then SHAMES a fan. … Is this even real? CHOAS broke on the set of "The View" after Sunny Hostin and Ana Navarro were told that they tested positive for COVID-19, and they had to leave during the show. Now both co-hosts are “pissed” because the tests were false positives and the whole chaos derailed an important show with Vice President Kamala Harris. Five Scientific American writers took to pen and paper and wrote a 2,600-word article: “Why the term ‘JEDI' Is Problematic for Describing Programs That Promote Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.” Yes, if you watch "Star Wars," you are supporting a fable that include white saviors, toxic masculinity, and even the phallic-shaped lightsabers.
