Where you bank may seem like a purely practical decision. We often compare interest rates, fees, convenience, and technology—and those things matter. But for Christians, banking can also be viewed through the larger lens of stewardship. Every financial decision gives us an opportunity to consider how faithfully we are managing the resources God has entrusted to us. Aaron Caid, Chief Marketing Officer at AdelFi Christian Banking, joined the show today to discuss financial discipleship, the role of Christian financial institutions, and how everyday banking decisions can support work that advances the gospel. Banking as an Act of Stewardship Biblical stewardship begins with recognizing that everything ultimately belongs to God. The money we earn, save, spend, borrow, and give has been entrusted to us to manage wisely. That perspective can shape even routine financial decisions. “For Christians, our financial decisions are an act of stewardship,” Aaron says. Whether a family is preparing for the future, a church is expanding its outreach, or a ministry is developing its budget, finances touch nearly every area of life. For a Christian financial institution such as AdelFi, that means providing practical banking tools while keeping biblical stewardship at the center of its mission. Families still need checking accounts, savings tools, loans, and credit cards. Churches and ministries still need financing and cash-management solutions. But those services can be offered with an understanding of the faith and mission behind them. Greater Capacity to Serve The strength of a financial institution matters because it affects its ability to serve its members. For families, that may mean access to resources for managing everyday expenses, building savings, and borrowing wisely. For churches and ministries, it can mean working with financial professionals who understand the unique challenges of ministry—including cash flow, property needs, growth, and long-term planning. One example came during the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Calvary Chapel South Orange County had been holding services outdoors in an outlet mall parking lot while Southern California churches faced restrictions on indoor gatherings. During that period, the congregation grew significantly and eventually became larger than its previous indoor space could accommodate. The church needed a new facility. AdelFi helped provide financing that enabled the congregation to purchase a larger property. While the transaction involved a loan, its impact went beyond dollars and cents. A larger building gave the growing church a place to gather, build relationships, worship, and continue growing together. It shows how financial resources can serve a larger purpose when deployed thoughtfully. What Is Financial Discipleship? Christian stewardship isn't ultimately about accumulating as much money as possible. Financial discipleship is about becoming increasingly faithful in the way we handle what God provides. That includes cultivating wisdom, contentment, generosity, and faithfulness. Jesus makes the connection between our finances and our spiritual lives clear in Matthew 6. He teaches that we cannot serve both God and money and reminds us, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). Our financial habits can either reinforce or compete with the priorities we profess. Practically, financial discipleship may look remarkably ordinary. It can mean following a realistic spending plan, saving for future needs, avoiding unnecessary debt, practicing generosity, and making decisions based on biblical convictions rather than simply following cultural expectations. These habits aren't ends in themselves. They help us put money in its proper place—as a tool entrusted to us rather than a master that controls us. Can Where You Bank Make a Difference? Stewardship can also raise another question: What happens to our money after we deposit it? Financial institutions use deposits to support lending and other financial activity. That means Christians may want to consider not only the products a bank offers but also the purposes their financial institution helps support. At AdelFi, members' deposits help provide resources to serve Christian families, churches, and ministries. According to Aaron, AdelFi has funded more than $1 billion in ministry real estate loans, helping churches and ministries acquire or improve facilities while pursuing financially responsible solutions. The organization also offers products designed to connect everyday financial activity with generosity. Its Cash Rewards Visa®, for example, allows members to earn cash back, while AdelFi also gives to Christian ministries and missions when members use their cards. None of this means choosing a Christian financial institution is required for faithful stewardship. Christians can honor God through many different financial arrangements. But it reminds us that stewardship invites us to think intentionally about all our financial choices—including where we bank. Bringing Faith Into Everyday Financial Decisions Faithful stewardship isn't limited to the offering plate or the major financial decisions we make a few times in life. It reaches into the ordinary. How we budget. How we borrow. How we save. How we spend. And even where we choose to keep our money can reflect what we value. The goal isn't simply to make every financial decision appear “Christian.” It's to recognize that every dollar belongs to God and then prayerfully ask how we can manage His resources with wisdom, generosity, and faithfulness. When our financial choices are shaped by that perspective, even something as routine as choosing a bank can become another opportunity to align our money with our faith. Apply by December 31 to earn a $200 bonus, plus 1.5% cash back on every purchase and other benefits. With every swipe, AdelFi also gives to Christian charities. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions: My husband and sister both passed away, and I received life insurance benefits from each. From a biblical perspective, should I tithe on those proceeds? Our younger daughter needs help with a down payment on property where she hopes to build a home. We'd like to help, but we still have a mortgage, only a few months of cash reserves, older vehicles, and several recent major expenses. Would helping her be wise, or would it put our own finances at too much risk? I'm retired, legally blind, and currently rent a home for $500 a month. The VA has approved grants to modify it for my needs, but my daughter thinks I should buy land and put a prefab home on it so I can build equity. Considering the added costs of ownership, would I be better off continuing to rent or buying a home? With his new book, LIKE SWIMMERS (New York Review Comics), Dash Shaw brings us a supernatural murder mystery set in COVID-era Richmond, VA. We talk about how he uses that story to explore memory, identity, art, marriage, and the social breakdown in America, how a murder mystery helped him reflect on the losses of COVID, LIKE SWIMMERS' pamphlet comic-feel and how that pay tribute to a lost friend who liked very different comics than what Dash usually makes, and how writing this story in the middle of COVID helped him capture details he'd never have recalled after the fact. We get into how we uncover different versions or aspects of the people we've lost, why he eschews three-act structures to find new shapes of storytelling, his use of Richmond as a character (and the very bizarre Kroeger that he couldn't fit into the book), and what it was like to go jogging in 2020 when there were snipers on rooftops. We also talk about his peripatetic project management style, what he thinks about Roy Lichtenstein's art and what it means to love cliches, getting inspiration from an unfinished Winsor McCay cartoon, working with New York Review Comics for several books, how coloring his comics is almost as tough as writing them, and more. All links mentioned in the post can be found here: https://simplysquaredaway.com/184 Click here to learn more and join us at Elevete: The Retreat, October 17, 2026, in Lynchburg, VA. What do you want next? Maybe you have a big dream you've been thinking about for years. Maybe there's one area of your life you know you want to change. Or maybe you're in a season where you honestly have no idea what you want next. In this episode, I'm joined by two of my best friends, Laurie Shopland and Kristin Dabney, for a conversation about dreams, goals, trusting yourself, and what it actually takes to create something you want in your life. And we have a BIG announcement! We're hosting ELEVATE, a one-day retreat for women on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Kristin's beautiful lake home in Lynchburg, Virginia. There are only 20 spots, and registration is now open. Get all the details and register here: https://simplysquaredaway.com/elevate The three of us met during our coach certification and have been meeting together regularly since 2018. We've walked through business growth, personal challenges, big decisions, changing seasons, and a lot of dreams together. One of those early dreams was building a $100K business. At the time, it felt almost impossible. Today, all three of us have crossed that line, and we talk about what surprised us about reaching that goal, including why achieving the goal doesn't necessarily create the feeling you thought it would. We also talk about another dream we've had for years: hosting a retreat together. This year, we finally stopped talking about it and put a date on the calendar. But as our conversation unfolds, we realize that “dream” might not even be the right word for what we're talking about. Elevating your life doesn't have to mean climbing Mount Everest, building a six-figure business, giving a TEDx talk, or making some enormous life change. It might mean having a conversation you've been avoiding. It might mean changing careers, asking for a raise, focusing on your health, improving a relationship, starting a business, organizing your kitchen, or finally giving yourself space to figure out what you want. And sometimes the first step is simply trusting that the thing that keeps coming up in your heart is worth paying attention to. In this episode, we talk about: What we remember about dreaming of becoming $100K business owners Why reaching a goal doesn't automatically make you feel the way you expected What we've learned about pursuing goals without all the hustle Why some dreams stay with you even when the timing isn't right What finally moved our retreat from “someday” to an actual date on the calendar Why your dream doesn't have to be big to matter How to trust yourself when something keeps nudging you What to do when you don't know what you want The value of getting out of your normal environment and giving yourself space to think Why community and coaching can help you see possibilities you can't always see on your own Everything we're planning for ELEVATE! COME TO ELEVATE ELEVATE is a one-day experience designed to give you the space to step back, look at your life, and decide what you want to elevate next. You'll complete a life reflection, choose the ONE area that would make the biggest difference in your life right now, receive coaching and support, and leave with a framework and plan you can use again and again. You'll also have time to reflect, walk by the lake, journal, connect with other women, enjoy beautiful food and surroundings, and let someone else take care of YOU for the day. ELEVATE Saturday, October 17, 2026 9:30 AM–4:00 PM ET Lynchburg, Virginia $297 Only 20 women (now only 18; 2 spots sold immediately, and the others will go fast!) Registration closes October 5 or when all 20 spots are filled. Register at simplysquaredaway.com/elevate You don't need a big dream to come. You might come because you already know exactly what you want to elevate. You might come because something in your life feels unsettled and you need space to think. You might come because you're ready for connection, coaching, inspiration, or simply a beautiful day away. And you might come because you have absolutely no idea what you want next. You don't have to have a dream to come to ELEVATE. You might come to discover one.

Choo-chooooo! All abooooooooard! This train may not run on time, but it does run off the rails...and fast. This week, the Lads complete their "Metal MAY-hem" trifecta by covering the heaviest metal of 'em all: trains. Joining in on the fun is Wallace Dietz and Dan-O Deckelman, who make up the creative engine of the Richmond, VA post-punk locomotive The Melody Chamber. Their self-titled debut (HHBTM Records/Too Good to Be True) landed not only in Brett's Top 5 Albums of 2025, but some of you in the O3L Community also named it as your favorite release of the past year. All of the accolades are very well deserved too - the record sounds like some great lost ‘80s album that was discovered in the dusty racks of a defunct college radio station. It contains 10 songs of post-punk and southern gothic jangle pop that not only evoke bands like The Psychedelic Furs, R.E.M., The Smiths, and The Chameleons, but are of such substantial quality that they stack up favorably against those bands. Although this is The Melody Chamber's first record, Dan-O and Wallace are both veteran musicians who have spent decades in indie bands such as The Silent Boys, The Grain Hoppers, Mudd Helmet, and Rocket 69. Grab your ticket and find a seat to hear: The band's unlikely origin story. Based off Uncle Gregg's off-color remark about our new recording platform, Brett picks an unfortunate new moniker. Silent applause. Train conceptions. Jumping trains. Stickin' it to Sisters of Mercy. New O3L t-shirt ideas (hint: our inspirations are Manowar and the "My Pillow" guy). Pilfering poetry. "Decide, don't hesitate"...to do a classic, no-holds-barred Uncle Gregg rant. Thanks to Mike Turner from HHBTM for introduction! So, whaddya waiting for? Come on, ride the train (woo-woo)! Miami Hurricanes fans have a new reason to believe: A'mir Sears flashes true two-way star potential, drawing comparisons to Travis Hunter. After a dominant display against Bishop Gorman, can Sears redefine what it means to be a game-changer on both sides of the ball? His elite athleticism, hand-eye coordination, and explosive lateral movement suggest he's a year-one starter and possibly the most dynamic skill recruit Miami has landed since Jeremiah Smith. Brian Smith breaks down Sears' positional versatility, from shutdown corner to dangerous playmaker on special teams, and considers whether top programs like LSU or Texas could pry him away before National Signing Day. The conversation explores how Sears stacks up against high school legends like Allen Iverson and Travis Hunter, discusses Miami's recruiting strategy, and raises the question: Will Sears' commitment stay rock-solid amid aggressive national interest? Don't miss this insight-packed look at the Hurricanes' most electric prospect. Support us by supporting our sponsors! Notre Dame's national title aspirations will be on full display with a deep and top-heavy depth chart, as they gear up to face Wisconsin at Lambeau Field. Will quarterback CJ Carr cement his status as a true Heisman contender, and how will the fierce Irish defense handle Colton Joseph's dual-threat potential? The conversation focused on surprising depth chart moves, standout freshmen like defensive end Rodney Dunham and safety Joey O'Brien, and whether big names such as running back Aneyas Williams and cornerback Leonard Moore can deliver game-changing performances. A key theme that emerged was Notre Dame's relentless competition for starting spots across the offensive line and secondary, raising questions about the right guard rotation and the unsettled wide receiver room, which features breakout candidates like Matt Jeffrey and Devin Fitzgerald. The discussion explored how the Fighting Irish's loaded front seven, led by Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa and Boubacar Traore, could set the tone for a playoff-caliber season. Will Notre Dame's balance of experience and young talent lead to a statement win over Wisconsin? Support us by supporting our sponsors! Star Wuerdemann's offer was rejected the same day it went in. The listing didn't even have VA financing marked as an acceptable option. Fifty-four days of inspection contingency later, she owned the house. This is the whole thing, told by the agent and the buyer sitting together.Star and her husband were moving to Olympia. He's leaving the Army, she's opening a writing and art studio downtown. They'd already bought a house in Lakewood with Jana Ross three years earlier, sight unseen, while they were stationed elsewhere. This time they found an 1890 Victorian that needed real work, and a seller who wanted to sell it as-is.Here's what makes this one worth 50 minutes. Jana called the listing agent and asked, straight out, why VA had been left off. The answer was fear: fear that the VA appraisal would call out conditions the seller would then be on the hook to fix. So Jana did the homework, and found something neither she nor the listing agent knew existed. A VA buyer can petition to have conditions waived, as long as they can show they understand the problem and are taking it on. Safety items stay non-negotiable. Everything else is on the table. Then the inspection. Rats in the attic. A crawl space nobody could get into on the first pass. And when they finally did: 1890 framing sitting on rocks and stumps, five and a half inches of differential across the floor, and a $54,000 foundation estimate.Jana's move there is the part agents should sit with. She did not send that estimate. She referenced it, told the listing agent the number on a phone call, and said: if you want it, we will send it. She repeated that line once a week for two months. Her reasoning is that if you shove everything into someone's face that they don't want to see, they get mad and say no to all of it.The seller came back with an $18,000 second opinion from a crawl space and insulation contractor, not a foundation engineer. Jana said no. Three seller-response extensions later, she was calling foundation companies herself, getting availability and pricing she could hand the listing agent so they had no reason left not to call one.Star's side of it is the other half. Anticipation is the worst part. A text thread with her husband and Jana for business, and a separate thread to Jana that was just "Jana, I'm dying." Several thousand dollars of their own money in inspections, estimates and the VA appraisal, sunk before they knew if they'd even get the house. She names her walk-away point out loud. They agreed on March 11 and closed March 17. Final terms: $24,000 off the original contract price, plus $4,000 in seller-paid concessions, plus the seller covering the buyer's closing costs. On a VA loan a buyer can take up to 4% in seller concessions on top of closing costs, and Jana explains how they used every inch of that. And after months of everybody being afraid of what a VA appraisal would find on an 1890 house: the appraisal called out one condition. Moss on the shed roof. Three hundred and fifty dollars. Jana paid it herself.MEET THE GUESTSJana Ross, Broker, Windermere Abode. The Torah in Parashat Nisavim foresees the time when Beneh Yisrael would be banished into exile on account of their breach of their covenant with G-d, describing, "Va'yashlichem Be'eretz Aheret" – Hashem's casting the nation into a different land (29:27). Those who look carefully at the Torah scroll will notice that the letter Lamed in the word "Va'yashlichem" is written larger than the other letters of the Torah. Enlarged letters in the Torah function like bolded text, or capitalized letters, in modern-day writing, denoting emphasis. What might the Torah have sought to emphasize with the enlarged Lamed in this word? Perhaps we can answer this question by understanding the unique significance of this letter. Several great Rabbis taught that as the word "Lamed" means "learn," this letter is associated with Torah study. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) explains on this basis the unique shape of the letter Lamed, which is drawn with a vertical line on top, followed by a horizontal line, and then another vertical line dropping down. This shape, the Ben Ish Hai writes, represents the process of Torah tradition. The top vertical line represents the transmission of Torah wisdom as it "descends" from the scholar to his disciple. The horizontal line represents the learning that takes place among peers, how the students – who are generally on the same level, like points on a horizontal line – learn and gain from another. The line descending from that horizonal line symbolizes the students' then transmitting their knowledge and wisdom down to their offspring and students. If, indeed, the letter Lamed represents Torah learning, then we can perhaps explain the significance of the enlarged letter Lamed in the word "Va'yachlichem." As mentioned, this word speaks of the Jews leaving into exile, where they would live amidst, and under the authority of, foreign nations. The Torah is alluding to us that when this happens, when we are driven to exile, the Lamed – Torah learning – must be our central point of focus. Living among foreign cultures, we face two potential challenges: persecution, and assimilation. In some exiles, the primary hardship involved the foreign governments' attempts to ban Jewish learning and practice, to pull us away from our faith and our traditions by force. But in other eras, such as in our current exile here in the United States, the challenge is assimilation. We are, thank G-d, free to practice our religion without any restrictions, but with all the freedoms we enjoy come the lures and pressures of our society. Its beliefs are not our beliefs, its values are not our values, and its lifestyle is not our lifestyle. As a small minority, we face the constant pressure to accept the beliefs, values and lifestyle of our surroundings. This is why the Lamed is enlarged. The most effective and most important weapon we have in our arsenal with which to defend ourselves against the unrelenting cultural pressure to which we are subject in exile is Torah learning. When we learn Torah, we submerge ourselves in our faith, in our values, in our traditions, in our laws and customs. Torah learning of course is and always was a vitally important part of Jewish life, for several reasons, but in exile – and especially in our current reality – it serves the function of anchoring us to our spiritual core, and fortifying us against the hostile spiritual influences of general society. Let us, then, redouble our commitment to Torah learning, so we will survive this exile both physically and spiritually, and be worthy of our final redemption, speedily and in our time, Amen.

Going through a medical board can be confusing, and it's happening at a time when you may already be dealing with health issues and an unexpected change to your military career. On top of that, there are two disability ratings, different rules for medical retirement versus medical separation, and benefits that can depend on the details of your situation. In this episode, Heather Walrath and I talk about the Integrated Disability Evaluation System, how the VA and DoD ratings work, and what the difference between medical retirement and medical separation can mean for your pay, health care, and survivor benefits. We also talk about questions to ask along the way and how to make sure the information you're getting is accurate. Heather is an Accredited Financial Counselor, Financial Educator, and Military Benefits Liaison with Navy Mutual who has spent years helping military families understand complex benefits. She brings a lot of practical knowledge to a process that can be difficult to navigate, especially when there's a lot riding on the decisions you make. È l'espressione italiana per augurare buona fortuna, equivalente all'inglese "good luck!". "Sei stressato ultimamente..." — "Lo so, ho bisogno di vacanze!" — "Vai, ricarica le batterie!" "Buone Vacanze!" 3. "Sei Arrivato/a Sano/a e Salvo/a?" Un'espressione affettuosa, equivalente all'inglese "safe and sound". "Quanti paesi hai visitato?" — "Tanti, ho girato mezzo mondo!" “Perfect Love Casts Out Fear”1 John 4:16-18No More Fear: Living Life with a Living SaviorWe live in a world filled with fear—fear for our kids and marriages, fear of sickness and job loss, fear of the future and the headlines, even fear of death itself. Many people feel trapped by these fears, either trying to control everything around them or resigning themselves to the thought, “That's just how I am.”But the resurrection of Jesus speaks directly into those fears. In this series, we will explore what it means to live life in light of a living Savior. If Christ had not been raised, many of our fears would be completely justified. But because the tomb is empty and Jesus is alive, everything has changed. His resurrection gives us a new foundation for our faith, a new identity as His people, and a new way to face the fears that shape our lives.Again and again, we can return to this central truth: because Jesus is alive, fear does not have the final word. Through the power of the resurrection, we can move from being gripped by fear to being grounded in the perfect love of a risen Savior.

Mortgage rates today are under pressure after Brent crude broke $90 a barrel, and the Federal Reserve just put a rate HIKE back on the table. Here is what moved, what it costs, and what I am telling my clients to do about it.Updated for Monday, August 31, 2026 — Mortgage bonds opened down 15 on oil and Middle East conflict, pushing mortgage rates toward 6.85% and possibly 7%. PCE inflation sits at 3.7% against the Federal Reserve's 2% target, with 54% of the basket running over 3% versus 32% before the pandemic. Inflation has now been above target for 64 straight months. Meanwhile 23,000 jobs were lost in July and May–June revisions erased another 103,000 — and the Fed said plainly it is focused on inflation, not jobs. Here is the part almost nobody explains to homebuyers: the Federal Reserve can raise rates and your mortgage rate can still go down. The Fed sets short-term interbank lending. Mortgage rates track the 10-Year Treasury. If bond investors believe a hike will actually control inflation, long-term yields can fall even while the funds rate rises. That mechanism is walked through at 06:40.What I am telling clients: if you are under contract, lock your mortgage rate. I cannot price around another drone strike. If you are not under contract yet, watch two things — oil and inflation. Oil back under $70 and holding is when the Federal Reserve gets room to cut and mortgage rates can finally come down. Oil at $120 is a very different conversation for the housing market.CHAPTERS00:00 Oil Just Broke $90 — Here's Why That Hits Your Rate00:39 The Chart I Check Every Morning Before Quoting a Rate01:21 What the Federal Reserve Actually Watches01:46 Inflation at 3.7% When the Target Is 2%01:59 The Data This Week That Can Move Mortgage Rates02:40 103,000 Jobs Gone — And the Fed Says It Doesn't Care04:06 The Jackson Hole Speech, Translated06:20 The Odds of a Hike Just Changed06:40 Why a Fed Hike Doesn't Have to Raise Your Mortgage Rate08:31 Lock or Float: What I'm Telling Clients Right Now10:04 Rate Watch, Loan Estimate Review and DIY Mortgage11:16 What to Watch NextNEXT STEPS
What would a Libertarian actually do if elected to Congress? Brian Lambert says Washington needs less power, Americans need more freedom, and the government needs to get out of your wallet. Josh Martens sits down with Brian Lambert, a Navy veteran and Libertarian candidate for Florida's 14th Congressional District, to break down his campaign and political philosophy. Lambert explains why he left the Republican Party, why his campaign centers on "your money, your freedom, your vote," and how he approaches federal spending, veterans' care, healthcare, war, surveillance, small business, and taxes. They dig into some of the biggest libertarian fights in American politics: • Cutting federal spending and returning education to local control • Protecting veterans while questioning America's military interventions • Getting government and insurance bureaucracies out of healthcare decisions • Ending warrantless mass surveillance and pushing back on Flock cameras Plus, Lambert explains why constitutional limits should come before political convenience and why reducing the IRS could give Americans more financial freedom. On this episode hosts Fred and Gregg welcome David Shulkin, MD who served as U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs under President Trump and before that as VA Under Secretary for Health under President Obama. In this conversation Secretary Shulkin makes a counterintuitive argument: the VA's government-run, globally budgeted healthcare system is a model the private sector should be learning from, not dismissing. The discussion spans the VA's landmark hepatitis C elimination campaign, its AI-powered suicide prevention program, the structural case for population health over fee-for-service, and why Shulkin believes incremental reform has run its course.
