Friends of the Rosary: Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Archangels Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Believing in the existence of the spiritual, that Sacred Scripture calls “angels” is a truth of faith. Angels are pure, non-corporeal heavenly spirits, on a higher order than human beings. They do not depend on matter for their existence or activity. The name angel means servant or messenger of God. They are distinct from saints, which men can become. Angels have intellect and will, and are immortal. St. Michael (Who is like God?, in Hebrew) is the prince of the heavenly host. He was the archangel who fought against Satan and all his evil angels. He is the protector of all humanity from the snares of the devil. His name appears in Scripture four times, twice in the Book of Daniel, and once each in the Epistle of St. Jude and the Book of Revelation. From Revelation, we learn of the battle in heaven, with St. Michael and his angels combatting Lucifer and the other fallen angels (or devils). We invoke St. Michael to help us in our fight against Satan; to rescue souls from Satan, especially at the hour of death. He is usually pictured as a strong warrior, dressed in armor and wearing sandals. St. Gabriel (God is my strength) announced to Zachariah the forthcoming birth of John the Baptist, and to Mary, the birth of Jesus. He was the angel chosen by God to be the messenger to announce the mystery of the Incarnation. His greeting to the Virgin, “Hail, full of grace,” has become the constant prayer of all Christian people. St. Raphael (God has healed) is the archangel who took care of Tobias' blindness on his journey in the Book of Tobit. His mission was as a healer and fellow traveler with the youthful Tobias. He is also identified with the angel in John 5:1-4 who descended upon the pond and bestowed healing powers. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael Pray for Us! Friends of the Rosary: We read last week (Lk 8:1-3) how Jesus was journeying from one town and village to another proclaiming the Good News and being accompanied by the Twelve Apostles and some women. Among them, "Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, Joanna, the wife of Herod's steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources." Christ Jesus overturned the social conventions of the rabbis of that time and added female disciples. Furthermore, He spoke to the woman at the well, engaged with the Syro-Phoenician woman, and forgave the woman caught in adultery. And the first witnesses of the Resurrection are women. St. Paul famously wrote that in Christ, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female." In light of the kingdom of God, there are no differences. As Bishop Barron wrote, "Given all of this, can we see these women disciples as forerunners of all of the great women who have followed Jesus over the centuries? Can we see them as prototypes of Teresa of Avila, Joan of Arc, Clare of Assisi, Thérèse of Lisieux, Teresa of Kolkata, Katharine Drexel, Edith Stein, and Dorothy Day?" Join Father Dom and James as they sit down with Dr. Dan Schneider to discuss all things spiritual warfare, spiritual combat, and how men can equip themselves and their families to fight the devil. He unpacks the insights from his new book, the Liber Christo Method: A Field Manual for Spiritual Combat, sharing the significance of spiritual discipline and order in our lives as men. Dr. Schneider pulls from his military experience to draw parallels with Catholicism and why sometimes we need to "embrace the suck" and be a smashmouth Catholic. He reinforces the power of prayer, masculine spirituality, and the importance of order and ritual in spiritual warfare. As we navigate through this conversation, we delve deeper into his insights on authority in relationships, particularly the crucial role of a father in a family. We also tap into the poignant topic of suffering, discussing how it can be offered to God as a grace. This episode is a treasure trove of wisdom for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of their faith and spiritual warfare. Friends of the Rosary: A friend of a friend, Jeff Smith, who recently passed away victim of cancer at the age of 51, left his friends with this insightful message: “Stop wasting your time searching. Spend your time learning to love others more perfectly and accept the great gifts that Jesus wants to give you.” Jeff also emphasized: “Start acting on the Truth that God has already placed in your heart.” A wise message indeed: learn to love in a more perfect manner! Friends of the Rosary: In today's reading (Lk 8:19-21), Christ Jesus says: 'My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.' Is he dismissing His own mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary? Not at all. What the Son of God is saying is that our own family should not be our ultimate priority. God is the cornerstone of our lives. Christ Jesus is our mission, without any other attachments. Mind you, by following Jesus, we properly set our values and honor our family—truly loving our wives, husbands, kids, and relatives. This way, we all build the Kingdom of God and walk together to Heaven. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Friends of the Rosary: Yesterday's parable of a landowner hiring laborers and paying them equally regardless of their amount of work was a demonstration of the unfathomable mercy of God, rather than a reflection on equal rights. Any saint, whether known or unknown, who endeavors to share the love of God with their neighbors, profoundly grasps the essence of this parable. Furthermore, such an individual finds joy in understanding that life is about desiring the good for others. Ultimately, the Lord, who embodies perfect and pure love, illuminates our deficiencies in love. Heaven represents the epitome of love, and our earthly journey is a preparation in terms of love. As St. Catherine of Siena eloquently stated, "The way to Heaven is Heaven." Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!St. Padre Pio, Pray for Us! In this episode, we discuss what happens in our lives during the summer, through the lens of the four mysteries of the rosary: joyful, sorrowful, luminous, and glorious. We chat about how each of our lives are a pilgrimage and how even when we cannot feel or see it, God is continuously working. Today, we invite you to reflect upon your recent faith journey and discover the beautiful ways God has been shaping your soul. Heather's One Thing - My revised prayer space Sister Miriam's One Thing - The book: Wisdom of the Heart by Dr. Peter Kreft Michelle's One Thing - Two songs: Joy by Ben Rector & The Choir Room and Mannasseh by Anna Golden Discussion Questions: Which Mystery of the Rosary has resonated with you most in this chapter of your life? Which Mystery of the Rosary has been the hardest for you to resonate with in this chapter of your life? What does it mean for your body to be a temple of the Holy Spirit? Where in your body are you experiencing healing? Where in your life are you looking for resuscitation from God when He wants to offer you resurrection? Friends of the Rosary:The prophet Isaiah reminded us that God's ways are not our ways. We have to read through these lenses in today's reading (Matthew 20:1-16A). The Divinity's vision of justice differs from ours. The parable of the landowner who goes out to hire workers at different hours and pays each the same wage shouldn't disturb us.When the owner contends, "Am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?", should prompt us to thank God for His goodness and generosity. Today's vineyard parable should give us new hope and courage. It may be the sixth, ninth, or even the eleventh hour of our life but we can still earn heaven if we listen to God's call and set to work diligently in His vineyard. We just need to be loyal to Him. Friends of the Rosary: Today is the Memorial of St. Pius of Pietrelcina (1887-1968), more popularly known as Padre Pio. For fifty years, this contemporary saint was a much sought-after spiritual advisor, confessor, and intercessor at the monastery of San Giovanni Rotundo, in Italy, now a point of pilgrimage. His life was devoted to the Eucharist and prayer. And despite his notoriety, he often said, "I only want to be a poor friar who prays." While praying before a cross on September 20, 1918, Padre Pio received the stigmata. He is the first priest ever to be so blessed. He was able to read the consciences of those going to confession with him. He was reportedly able to bi-locate, levitate, and heal by touch. Padre Pio founded the House for the Relief of Suffering, a hospital that serves 60,000 a year, in 1956. Today there are over 400,000 members worldwide in prayer groups begun by Padre Pio in the 1920s. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!St. Padre Pio, Pray for Us! Friends of the Rosary: Grace is given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift, St. Paul wrote in his letter to the Ephesians (Eph 4:1-7, 11-13), as we read yesterday in the Gospel. To the holy ones, Christ equips them for building up His mystical body, the universal Church. Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers are provided with the knowledge to spread the Eternal Truth. Consecrated religious people and lay people like us are all urged to live, in Paul's words, "with humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace: one Body and one Spirit." We all share the apostolic mission of building up together the Kingdom of Heaven by evangelizing those who haven't received the gift of the faith. Friends of the Rosary: Today is the feast day of the Apostle and Evangelist St. Matthew. He had a hateful profession to the Jews, a tax collector for the Roman enemy until he got the call of Christ. One day, while seated at his table of books and money, Jesus looked at Matthew and said: "Follow me." These two words made him rise, leaving his money to follow Christ. Jesus changed the name of the new apostle into Matthew, which means "Gift of God." The Jews were surprised to see Jesus with a publican, a tax collector. The Son of God explained that he had come "not to call the just, but sinners." The Gospel of Matthew was written to convince the Jews that their anticipated Messiah had come in the person of Jesus. Matthew preached in Egypt and Ethiopia and further places East, having a martyr's death. St. Matthew's call from Christ "Follow me" means that we are all called to belong to the family of God.
