We took this podcast in a little different direction by combining clips from previously recorded interviews with Jeff Jensen, SW Regional Field Staff Rep for the GCSAA and Mike Huck of Irrigation & Turfgrass Services. Then we brought back our friend Gerald Flaherty, CGCS to talk about a new technology that his company, Task Tracker, launched this year. By having clips from Jeff and Mike before bringing Gerald into the conversation, we were able to set the table for the launch of Turf Rad soil moisture technology that's offered exclusively through the Task Tracker platform. This groundbreaking technology will help users dial in their water use to improve playability and reduce the cost of irrigation water. Gerald and I have been talking about this technology for a while and I'm excited to see them finally get it launched. It's very powerful and can help users save money and water. There is a little bit of visual to this podcast, so the YouTube version may be helpful for the tail end of the interview with Gerald. It may be helpful to watch it on that platform as well. In this episode of Frankly Speaking, our “water guy” Mike Huck, President of Irrigation and Turf Services, chats with Frank about the past, present and future of water. The conversation ranges from “all water is local” and the classic movie “Chinatown” to the obstacles and opportunities for conservation. Will there be a “free market” for water and where will golf fall out in the allocations? To be sure this is not simply a conversation for golf west of the Mississippi River, but as drought impacts various areas all over the country, these conversations will be relevant.
Mike Huck, owner of Irrigation and Turf Services joins Kevin Hicks to talk about his many career steps including his affiliation with an aftermarket sprinkler nozzle market, his time as an agronomist with the USGA, and finally hanging his own shingle as a consultant for water rights, irrigation auditing, and turf consulting. We discuss his early years as a course employee in Wisconsin, his venture west to Cal Poly Pomona, and some of the equipment that many of us “old timers” worked with early in our careers. Mike's 40+ years in the golf business has impacted countless turf managers. His continued work on the state of water in the western United States will keep golf and turf at the table as tough decisions are made about who gets an ever-dwindling water supply. Please join us for an interesting conversation! And don't forget to subscribe to our podcast or catch us on the EarthWorks YouTube channel.

In this episode of Frankly Speaking, Frank Rossi chats with Mike Huck, principal of Irrigation & Turfgrass Services (Orange County, CA) during the recent California wildfires. What is the cause of the wildfires? Why so many fires? For one, the Santa Ana winds that blow hot and steady for weeks on end. Secondly, increased density of trees sharing reduced levels of precipitation. Snowpack, drought, insect activity all enter into it. Using historical data, some of these fires could have been mapped in advance. And how does the government factor in? Listen in as Frank and Mike hash it out. Sponsored by Civitas and DryJect.
