Indie rock band Scorched Waves stopped by Fox Cities Core on WCZR Code Zero Radio for an in-depth interview during Mile of Music 13 in Appleton, WI! The Stevens Point, Wisconsin group — Tyler Armstrong (guitar), Finn Vaughn (bass), Tiernan Brinkman (lead vocals), and Jaron Chick (keys), with drummer Damien Kessler holding down the road — sat down to talk band history, songwriting, touring stories, and what's next for Scorched Waves. In this interview, Scorched Waves breaks down their evolution from a high school garage band into an energetic live act — from their earliest EP recorded in a bedroom, to their debut album "Televised Paradise," to 2024's "With a Smile," and the more melodic, dynamic direction they're taking on new music like "Sinners" and "Things Will Be Fine." They also dig into their collaborative songwriting process, their weekly practice routine (every Sunday since 2019!), wild tour stories from Denver to Nashville, an unexpected shoutout from actor Danny Trejo, and their love for Wisconsin's local music scene, including Wild Adriatic's influence on their sound.Whether you caught Scorched Waves at Mile of Music, Paper Fest, or Crazy Todd's house show, this Fox Cities Core interview gives you the full story behind the band and a look at where they're headed next.Follow Scorched Waves:Find them on all social media @scorchedwavesMore Fox Cities Core:Fox Cities Core is your source for interviews, venue spotlights, and show previews from the Fox Cities and Wisconsin regional live music scene, brought to you by WCZR Code Zero Radio.CHAPTERS:00:00 Scorched Waves Interview Begins – Fox Cities Core Welcome00:31 Scorched Waves & Their Fox Valley Roots02:29 Meet the Band – Tyler, Finn, Tiernan & Jaron02:55 Scorched Waves Origin Story – How the Band Started (2017-2019)03:30 From High School Emo Band to Indie Rock05:59 Where the Name "Scorched Waves" Came From07:37 Weekly Practice Since 2019 – Their Work Ethic10:52 Inside Scorched Waves' Songwriting Process14:23 Debut Album "Televised Paradise" & Recording During COVID17:19 "With a Smile" (2024) – A More Mature Sound19:33 New Singles & Plans for a Bigger Album Project20:46 Evolving Sound – Dance Rock, Melody & "Sinners"27:45 Paper Fest Story – Choking Mid-Set30:18 Scorched Waves Returns to Mile of Music33:58 Life on Tour – Sticky Vans & Small Towns, Big Energy36:07 Dedicated Fans & Unexpected Road Trip Stories39:56 The Danny Trejo Connection41:14 Crazy Todd's House Show & the Great Bee Incident43:20 Opening for Wheatus, High Fade & Bigger Artists45:18 Goals for Scorched Waves – First Avenue & Beyond46:48 Upcoming Shows: Riverside & Appleton Beer Factory48:43 Final Words from Scorched Waves#ScorchedWaves #MileofMusic #FoxCitiesCore #CodeZeroRadio #AppletonWI #IndieRock #WisconsinMusic #LiveMusicInterview #FoxValley #IndieBand #Mile13
Milwaukee pop punk band Gold Steps stopped by Fox Cities Core on WCZR Code Zero Radio during their first-ever Mile of Music appearance in Appleton, WI! Alternative Press has called them out as one of the artists reclaiming pop punk, and the band has toured with acts like Charlotte Sands and Stand Atlantic, played Warped Tour and Summerfest, and even performed in the legendary pool at The Rave in Milwaukee opening for The Used.In this interview, Gold Steps — vocalist/frontwoman Betty, guitarist and co-founder Zach, bassist Ryan, and drummer John — talk about how the band started back in 2016 in Austin, Texas, and how they named themselves after a Neck Deep song. They dig into the wild, nearly four-year journey behind their debut EP, going independent after their label dissolved, and the meaning behind their song "Narcissist." The band also opens up about life on tour (breakdowns, no A/C, and catching COVID in an RV), Betty's connection to Taylor Swift as a songwriting inspiration, and their new crowdfunding partnership with the Inertia Project to build a "Digital Tour Bus" fan community ahead of their September tour. They even perform an acoustic version of their new song live in the studio!Whether you caught Gold Steps at Mile of Music, the Bent Keg, or Fox River House, this Fox Cities Core interview gives you the full story on this hardworking Milwaukee band and where they're headed next.Follow Gold Steps:Find them on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok @goldstepsmusicMore Fox Cities Core:Fox Cities Core is your source for interviews, venue spotlights, and show previews from the Fox Cities and Wisconsin regional live music scene, brought to you by WCZR Code Zero Radio.
Punk-inspired rock trio R-NØT made the trip from the D.C. area to Appleton, WI for their second year at Mile of Music, and they stopped by Fox Cities Core on WCZR Code Zero Radio to talk about it! The band has been turning heads with recent releases like "Sheep" and their newest single "K.I.S.S.," with more new music (including "Marmalade") already out and a lot more on the way.In this interview, R-NØT — Paul (guitar/vocals and primary songwriter), Chuck (bass/vocals), and Mikey (drums) — dig into the band's roots in the DC hardcore and punk scene, growing up on MTV in the 90s, and the reality behind DC's legendary 9:30 Club. They trace how each member found their instrument, how Mikey ended up joining the band in 2023 after years of separate paths through the Marine Corps, DJing, and DC's music scene, and how their genre-blurring sound — equal parts punk, grunge, and alt rock — keeps audiences guessing. The band also opens up about their debut album "Dumpster Fire," the massive backlog of unreleased songs behind it, their connection to legendary producer Steve Albini and DC's Inner Ear Studio, and their philosophy of scrapping the setlist and calling audibles live. Plus, find out the science-based story behind the name "R-NØT."This Fox Cities Core interview gives you the full story behind the band and a look at where they're headed next.Follow R-NØT:Find them on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube for music videos, singles, and tour updates.More Fox Cities Core:Fox Cities Core is your source for interviews, venue spotlights, and show previews from the Fox Cities and Wisconsin regional live music scene, brought to you by WCZR Code Zero Radio.
Hey, it's the 44th episode of Best Issue Ever. This episode's guest is Lodro Rinzler. Like many people I am friend's with, he is a big fan of the X-Men, and has his own podcast - X-Men Horoscopes, which you can find wherever you get podcasts. I guested on an episode and had a ton of fun doing the show. He also wrote a book called You Are Good, You Are Enough which for me was a pretty timely read. Follow his work at his website, lodrorinzler.com. We're chatting about Uncanny X-Men #244, which you might know as the Girls' Night Out issue. This is one of my favorite comics from my favorite era of X-Men and it introduces one of my favorite X-Men, Jubilee! This issue was written by Chris Claremont with art by Marc Silvestri, inks by Dan Green, colors by Glynis Oliver, lettering by Tom Orzechowski, and edited by Bob Harras and Mark Gruenwald. This podcast is recorded in Milwaukee, WI. This episode is edited by Sara Century, but it's usually edited by Kate Warner of the band Church Fire. The theme music is provided by Earth Control Pill, whose work is on Bandcamp. I do not want to deal with ads AT ALL, so if you also don't want to deal with ads, please consider supporting the podcast by rating and reviewing and/or signing up at the Ko-fi @ ko-fi.com/saracentury. There is now a Discord for this podcast, and here's the slightly cumbersome invite link if you are interested: https://discord.gg/ZwbvqJDAGS Finally, you could support my other ventures, visit my website to sign up for my newsletter for updates. Oh, and I'm a horror writer, so pick up my short story anthology, A Small Light and Other Stories, through Weirdpunk Books, or pretty much wherever else you get books. I wrote a zine about the Scream franchise that you can pick up @ sara-century.square.site.

In this episode, Derek talks to local WI hunter and videographer Kyle Hollibush of Avon Legend. Kyle was a late-onset hunter starting only 8 seasons ago, but has the drive and thirst for knowledge that has really helped him “figure it out” in the marsh bottoms. Kyle discusses his experience getting into hunting, where he found inspiration and information, and how the COVID pandemic helped accelerate his learning curve. Kyle discusses how he used trail cameras to help monitor ditches and water crossings to help locate traveling bucks. After finding a good buck, Kyle likes to locate nearby doe bedding thickets and leave soaker cameras up on the outside transitions to learn yearly patterns of pre-rut and rut buck movements checking does. Kyle dives into detail of how he found a buck on one such camera and, over the course of a couple of seasons, continued to explore and learn more about the area and timing of the buck's movements. One massive scrape in a thicket near a doe bedding area gave Kyle the intel he needed to set up and kill “Tiny” with his bow during the prerut. Kyle also explains his desire to bowhunt the Ohio rut after having the privilege of gun hunting Ohio and seeing the mature buck sign some of the Republic Ground offered. Kyle ends the episode with 3 major takeaways that are absolute truths for anyone looking to get serious about killing mature bucks. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Kathleen W. Taylor Kollman has a new book out that focuses on the reality of women running for president in the United States, and the fictional representations of this idea that we have seen over the past hundred years. The Fictional Female Presidency in Film, Television, and Literature: Representations from 1932 to 2024 (Bloomsbury Academic, 2026) takes up a number of different and intriguing examples of this idea, a woman serving as president, and unpacks the various narratives to help us understand what popular culture may be communicating about this concept and what those narratives may be teaching the audience (viewers or readers). Taylor Kollman comes at her research from a variety of perspectives, including Media Studies, Women's Studies, Feminist Studies, and American Studies. This makes the research particularly rich – since it explores these ideas from a host of analytical viewpoints, helping the reader to consider different genres (television, film, literature) and different approaches. Undergirding all of this is an interrogation of the idea of women and power, which is a controversial concept for many voters, even if it remains unacknowledged. Taylor Kollman goes through the decades, with a focus on examples of female presidents in a variety of different cultural artifacts. In tracing this concept through almost a hundred years of different narratives, the research highlights some interesting themes, including the accidental way in which women become president within the fictional framework. One of the points Taylor Kollman makes is that, in all the different genres and contexts, there seems to be something wrong with this idea of a woman as president. Often the characters are presented as deceptive, evil, corrupt, illegitimate, or they are seen as incapable of doing the job and are often torn between work and homelife/family life. In tracing these examples, Taylor Kollman also provides the reader with an understanding of the different iterations (waves) of feminism and feminist thought, as well as noting the various backlashes to feminism. The Fictional Female Presidency in Film, Television, and Literature takes the reader through a host of different examples, fleshing out these feminist and backlash imaginary spaces that focus on women and power. Another part of the equation, that is often overlooked in the research on this topic, is that there are fewer female film and television producers, directors, and showrunners, thus often constraining the opportunity to present these ideas of woman and power. This also influences the narratives that come before audiences, since women are not generally “trusted” in the same way that men are to helm major film releases with multi-million dollar budgets. This is another form of reality influencing the imaginary, but in a less expected way. The Fictional Female Presidency in Film, Television, and Literature: Representations from 1932 to 2024 takes the reader from Betty Boop for President to Allison Janney as President Grace Penn in The Diplomat and many other fascinating examples of fictional portrayals of women as president of the United States. What happens when you suspect your spouse isn't telling the truth about the finances? Susan Guthrie says it's more common than you think, and it's exactly what forensic accountant Tracy Coenen does for a living. Tracy Coenen has spent more than 25 years uncovering hidden money in corporate fraud cases and in divorces too. She calls it "divorce financial planning," when someone sees a split coming and starts thinking about what they can do with the money so they don't have to divide it or pay support on it. She also calls out "divorce amnesia," the sudden inability to remember an inheritance or a bank account on a financial disclosure form. Tracy returns to Divorce and Beyond to walk through the five most common ways people hide money when a marriage ends. As a divorce attorney for more than three decades, Susan has seen plenty of these sneaky moves herself, and she knows a forensic accountant can almost always find them. Together, she and Tracy go through the practical, do it yourself steps to spot the signs using bank statements, tax documents, and a little pattern recognition, without hiring a small army of experts. If the numbers in your divorce have ever felt off, this one is for you. What You'll Learn What to look for when a spouse is only depositing part of their paycheck into the joint account Why a sudden increase in cash withdrawals, or a spouse suddenly hitting the ATM, is worth a closer look How gift cards and cash back at checkout can become a quiet way to siphon money out of the marital estate How to spot a secret credit card, especially when it's hiding at the very same bank as your main account Why a paycheck, bonus, or commission that vanishes right as a divorce begins may not be a coincidence How pulling together the right bank statements and tax documents lets you spot these patterns yourself, without paying a forensic accountant Episode 4 of 8 in the Divorce & Beyond Summer Essentials Series. This summer, Divorce & Beyond brings back 8 the episodes listeners reach for most, the conversations with the clearest, most practical guidance for anyone thinking about, going through, or rebuilding after divorce. New Essentials air every other Monday all summer. Follow the show so you never miss one. About this week's special guest: Tracy Coenen Tracy has been investigating fraud for more than 25 years, but she didn't always want to be a forensic accountant. With a dream of one day being a prison warden, Tracy went to Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI to get a criminology degree. A class on financial crime investigations reminded her how much she loved Encyclopedia Brown books as a kid. She continued her criminology degree, but added accounting and economics courses so she could sit for the CPA exam… and here Tracy is, finding money in cases of corporate fraud, high net worth divorce, and other financial shenanigans.
For this episode we welcomed Professor Douglas Haynes into the studio at WDRT in Viroqua to discuss his beautiful new book Teaching Toward Slow Hope: Place-Based Learning in College and Beyond, published this spring by Johns Hopkins University Press. Douglas teaches English at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and also hosts the Monday sessions of "A Public Affair" on Madison's community radio station, WORT-FM.Teaching Toward Slow Hope traces how students and educators across the Upper Midwest are remaking college into a place for connection, meaning, and collective resilience. In the book, Douglas talks about his own teaching experiences at a regional public university and also shares four inspiring examples of place-based education at different colleges and universities in Wisconsin and Michigan, three of them public institutions. These stories and Douglas' reflections about the role of higher education in the lives of young people today make this book both moving and highly practical for anyone working on the revitalization of higher education, whether they are inside an existing organization or starting something new.Douglas Haynes is a nonfiction writer, poet, and teacher. In addition to Teaching Towards Slow Hope, his 2017 nonfiction book Every Day We Live Is the Future: Surviving in a City of Disasters is a cautionary tale of urban inequality and the climate crisis that recounts two Nicaraguan families' quests to reinvent their lives in Managua, one of the world's most disaster-prone cities. Douglas's essays and journalism have appeared in Orion, Longreads, Michigan Quarterly Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, The Progressive, Civil Eats, Boston Review, North American Review and dozens of other publications.Douglas grew up in Iowa and Illinois and studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He went on to study literature and languages in Germany, Ireland, and Guatemala while working as a dishwasher, farmhand, freelance writer, and English teacher. He returned to WI to teach English at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, as well as creative writing and environmental humanities.Teaching Toward Slow Hope - https://www.press.jhu.edu/books/title/53868/teaching-toward-slow-hope"A Public Affair" on WORT-FM - https://www.wortfm.org/tag/douglas-haynes/Douglas' Personal Website - https://www.douglas-haynes.com/Jacob Hundt & Grace Greenwald about microcolleges on WORT - https://rss.com/podcasts/thoreaucollege/2599918/Driftless Field School on WORT - https://www.wortfm.org/teaching-eco-literacy-in-the-driftless-bioregion/Northland Collaborative - https://northlandcollaborative.org/

Derek kicks off this season solo with some updates on the upcoming Okayest Hunter Seminar, summer trial cams, IL scouting, and prepping for his son's WI youth hunt. In Dropping Pins, Derek tells the story of how his group's Illinois public land hunt unfolded and how he was lucky enough to arrow a nice IL buck. The story tells a tale of not settling, asking yourself the tough questions, and not being afraid to make a move or take a shot when a fleeting opportunity presents itself. Julia Azari, Professor of Political Science at Marquette University, has a new, award-winning[*] book centering on the connection between race and the American presidency, specifically in the reaction to presidents who made progress on the issue of race in the United States. Backlash Presidents: From Transformative to Reactionary Leaders in American History focuses on four different periods in American political history and a number of different presidential administrations including: Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Donald J. Trump. Race and the American presidency are not usually topics that are looped together, and this is also part of the point that Azari is making in the book, since presidents often try to elide racial politics and policy issues. Race is also not usually connected to presidential impeachments, but this is yet another key point that Azari raises, connecting racial progress, the backlash responses, and the subsequent impeachments. In noting these connections, Azari threads examples over time where presidents directly confronted race in American politics, working towards more racial equality, and how these efforts also prompt a backlash response. The key case studies in Backlash Presidents are Abraham Lincoln, the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil War in the 1860s, Lyndon Johnson's efforts in the 1960s in regard to the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act, as well as anti-poverty legislation, and finally Barack Obama as the first Black president of the United States, which was both symbolic and structural. Backlash Presidents traces not only the progress made during these administrations, but also the responses that followed in the subsequent administrations. It is these next administrations, of Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Donald Trump, where each of these presidents were either impeached or were about to be impeached, and how this dynamic pulls together a variety of different threads to help us to understand presidential politics, institutional development, and American political history all in context of the question of race. Azari's research is connected to the idea of political time, but with the important addition of pulling out the problem of race in the United States. Backlash Presidents contributes to our thinking about not only the time and context of presidents and their administrations, but also to thinking about what it is that presidents do to politics itself. Part of this analysis also interrogates populism, positioning these movements within the context of racial backlash, while also building out the understanding of the president's position within his own party, especially during these fraught periods. In each of the key examples, Azari highlights the ways in which Johnson, Nixon, and Trump were outsiders to what was going on inside their parties—in each case the Republican Party at the time—and how these shifting partisan foundations opened up different kinds of vulnerabilities for these presidents. In each of the case studies, there is also the discussion of the role that the U.S. Congress plays, since they are the actors who move towards impeaching and trying the president. Members of the House of Representatives need to move beyond constraints in order to impeach a president, and in these instances, they have concluded that the president is not correct in some basic and meaningful way, that the president is not upholding his oath of office, and is also undermining the forward movement on race and racial equality. Backlash Presidents: From Transformation to Reactionary Leaders in American History is a deeply researched analysis, with important historical context and details to help flesh out the particular time period under consideration. The examination is further complicated and built out with important understandings of party politics in the United States, and how president fits into their political party, or may be seen as an outsider. Racial dynamics in the United States undergirds the entire theory, and helps us see the tensions within partisan politics, presidential politics, and American democracy. Lilly J. Goren is a professor of political science at Carroll University in Waukesha, WI. She is co-host of the New Books in Political Science channel at the New Books Network.
