FlimFlam, Wonko and special guest Goblin review Athens City Academy of the Performing Bards, this young series' first cheesy clipshow. We then attempt a little retrospective of our own, and try not to be sidetracked (largely unsuccessfully.) Content warning: Goblin behaviour.
This time, we get a clip show so Lucy can have the week off, Gabs meets a nice boy called Homer, and together they enter an epic rap battle to save the local arts school from those evil rule-and-regulations-mongers.

This week, all that we've done before we do again as Gabby hosts a school for clip shows. Also We Are Spartacus! And we extol the high brow virtues of driving cars both quickly and angrily. Join us for Xena: Warrior Podcasts Episode 13: Athens City Academy of the Performing Bards! Mount Olympus is an episode by episode review of the smash 90s television programs "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" and its spinoff "Xena: Warrior Princess," which still enjoy unparalleled cultural relevance today! Or ... at least they do in the hearts of our hosts. Kevin Sorbo, Lucy Lawless, Michael Hurst, Renee O'Connor and friends (along with fan favorite Bruce Campbell!) stomp, fight, and flirt their way through the New Zealand countryside - and we break it down week by week. Uh-oh, this is a week of contrary opinions on XENA: WARRIOR PODCAST. Vera, Katie, and Livy wax poetical over the improbable gem, 1x13 “Athens City Academy of the Performing Bards,” which despite being a clip show -- that much loathed episode format usually considered a waste of valuable tv plotting space -- actually breaks a ton of new ground! We talk about Gabrielle’s surprising choice to leave Xena behind, the utopian ultra-supportive artists’ collective she establishes with her many charming BFsOTW, and the imaginative editing techniques this episode uses to depict the bards’ different storytelling styles. Then we go against the fandom grain in 1x14, “A Fistful of Dinars,” and give this seemingly well-liked episode a big thumbs down. We puzzle over why Petracles’s hair is the way it is, why the gods created ambrosia in the first place, and why this episode is named after a spaghetti western when it’s more of an Indiana Jones serial?? Just...so many why’s. One day in January 1996, I was flipping through the channels trying to find something to watch. I came across a show with the cutest little blonde I had ever seen. She was talking 90 miles an hour and spinning some fabulous tales about a woman named Xena with whom she travelled. The pause before I flipped to the next channel was maybe three seconds. In that three seconds, I found something that would change my life. I sat down that night and finished watching "Athens City Academy of the Performing Bards." The next week, my butt was planted in the chair for the next episode and an obsession was born. I had my VCR programmed and ready to go every week and woe to anyone who accidentally messed up my recording. It's been nearly twenty years since I saw that first episode. A lot has changed during that time, but never my love for Xena and Gabrielle. I love podcasts. When I started this show I had a 2.5-hour commute everyday. I found that listening to podcasts not only helped me stay awake but kept me entertained and informed as well. I listened to Buffy podcasts and Firefly podcasts. Podcasts about politics and science fiction and a hundred other things I was interested in. But I couldn't find a podcast about my favorite obsession...Xena: Warrior Princess. So, I decided to make my own. The initial shows were just me talking about the Xena episodes. Starting with show #9 I added news about the Xenaverse and reviews of stories, videos, and forum threads. A few other segments make an appearance periodically. Sometimes a friend will drop by and we record commentary together. Those are the best. It's been six years now since I made that first recording. The first year was sporadic at best. Both my grandparents died within five months of each other making it hard year to concentrate. The next year I moved from Texas to Seattle. Then I got married, moved back to Texas, and now live in Auckland, New Zealand. Real life often gets in the way, but I always come back to XenaCast. In the future, I hope to continue bringing you this show and keep you informed on what's happening in the world of Xenadom. I am a busy Kiwi wife these days, but I look forward to sharing my stories and adventures with you. Please feel free to drop me an email any time. I may take a bit but I will definitely get back with you. I hope you enjoy the podcast. It's up to us to keep Xena and Gabrielle alive and well! Battle on!
