The draft year 7-13 English curriculum proposes compulsory Shakespeare for senior secondary school students. That's provoked a furious debate about the relevance of Shakespeare in this day and age - Shakespeare is important, but is it essential? Even when I was at secondary school 45 years ago, Shakespeare was not popular. One year we were studying Hamlet. So, the school organised an afternoon matinee of the play at the Mercury Theatre. The boys were so rowdy that a young Michael Hurst commented it was the worst audience he had ever had. We didn't even calm down during the sword fights. That didn't happen when we studied Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman or Thomas Beckett's Murder in the Cathedral. Those plays used language we understood and themes we could relate to. To teach you must engage and much and all as we bemoan the fall of Shakespeare, he's still so strong that his influence on the modern world will not fail. So, what will engage the kids, I don't know. This generation is less engaged than ever - so much so I had to explain who Bob Geldof was to my 26-year-old son. And speaking of which the most engagement I had in English at school was when we studied the lyrics of David Bowie's 'Time' from the Aladdin Sane album. And let's remember that in 2016 Bob Dylan won the Nobel prize in literature. Would anyone mind if he was added to the curriculum? Post script: I see that the new curriculum says that spelling and keyboard lessons for children at intermediate schools should be compulsory - you mean they're not already? How do our kids survive in this modern world?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kia ora e hoa mā! I'm Petra Bagust and Grey Areas is back for season 7, and I have to say I'm so excited for this season. You know how sometimes you just have a good feeling about things? And look, something I've learned from our conversations is that life rarely fits into tidy boxes. It spills over the edges, it surprises us, it challenges what we thought we knew, and that's where most of the interesting kōrero happens - at the edges, down a rabbit hole, on a tangent in the 'grey areas'. And so this season, we explore more of those spaces with guests who bring music, wisdom, science, and lived experience to the table. Let me tempt you with some of our guests this season. I sit down with the extraordinary Nadia Reid. She's a singer-songwriter whose music speaks to the heart in ways that words alone never could. Sports leader Raelene Castle, who talks about high pressure leadership at times being the woman in a man's world, while dealing with very real personal challenges and still nailing it. And renowned nutritionist, Doctor Libby Weaver, who is helping reshape the way we think about nurturing our bodies and minds in a world that's constantly changing - at a time when, let's face it, we are constantly changing. We also connect with two of Aotearoa's most celebrated actors, Michael Hurst and Jennifer Ward-Leaand, as they open up about their latest stage production, a raw personal look at the realities of dementia. And we widen the lens with Dame Anne Salmond, an academic and thinker whose work challenges us to see our place in the world and in history with fresh eyes. I tackle the hot button topic of ADHD which I realise is both compelling and repelling, but this season, it's personal. There is, let's face it, no right or wrong way to navigate life's grey areas, but there is something powerful in sitting with the questions, hearing different perspectives, soaking up ideas and holding space for the messy, beautiful in between, because those can be the spaces where we begin to find our way. Join me for season 7 of Grey Areas. I can't wait to share it with you. New episodes drop every week from Thursday, March 6th, and please follow the show wherever you get your favourite podcasts, so that you'll never miss an episode. Ka kite ano, see you soon. One of the most legendary couples on the New Zealand theatre scene, Jennifer Ward-Lealand and Michael Hurst have acting resumes that range from pimps, to politicians, to animated versions of Buzzy Bee. They've been in countless productions together, but it had never been just the two of them on stage until their most recent stage work - In Other Words. In the show, the two play a married couple dealing with the onset of Alzheimer's, and it had a sold out run in Auckland last year. This year, Ward-Lealand and Hurst are taking the show across the nation, which Ward-Lealand told Jack Tame they're thrilled to be doing. “It would be rare to find a New Zealander who hasn't had some connection in some way to some, either member of their Whanau or friends, or friends of friends who've experienced dementia,” she said. Despite the serious topic, Hurst says the play isn't particularly heavy. “It certainly confronts it, but it's levity and uplifting and the human condition, and caring, and all of those things – and music. So all of those things which are part of the dealing of it.” Although there is levity in the play, Ward-Lealand and Hurst have taken care to represent the symptoms and reality of Alzheimer's, which they say has been well received by audiences. “The feedback that we've had from people has been really, really humbling,” Ward-Lealand said. The local film industry is shaken up after the fatal shooting involving Alec Baldwin. Industry guilds say New Zealand safety standards are strong but fatigue, low budgets, and long hours can still present risks to cast and crew members. Thursday's shooting of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins highlighted multiple suspected errors, and the intricate work of professionals such as armourers on movie sets. "Everybody is gobsmacked this could even have possibly happened," actor and Equity New Zealand president Jennifer Ward-Lealand said. "It's a tragedy. It's an absolute tragedy. I don't know how the film can go on. To have lost your director of photography, I just don't know how you could get over it." Ward-Lealand and her husband Michael Hurst have both worked with firearms and armourers on local productions. Ward-Lealand said armourers in her experience always carefully instructed actors and followed multiple safety procedures and checks. "That's probably why I know never to put my finger on the trigger." Hurst said he couldn't understand how the shooting of Hutchins happened. "The gun never leaves the sight of the armourer." Stage and screen actor Michael Hurst says knowing the strict guidelines around using weapons, it's hard to comprehend how the Santa Fe fatal shooting could have happened. Photo / Doug Sherring. Hurst said in his experience, actors waited for verbal and visual reassurances from armourers. "It's too problematic if anything goes wrong. All the armourers have to be qualified." Hurst said when firearms were used in theatre, police were told, and multiple safety plans were supposed to be closely followed. New Zealand stunt professional Stuart Thorp said armourers frequently were ex-military professionals and the use of guns on local sets involved detailed planning. "Armoury itself is a specialist position and they know all about the different types of ammunition. Effectively the first assistant director is in control of the set." Rust director Joel Souza reportedly told investigators three people were handling firearms, which the armourer and first assistant director checked before giving to actors. A violinist plays behind a photograph of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during a vigil in her honour in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Photo / Andres Leighton, AP Thorp said it seemed some crew were out firing live rounds for target practice near the New Mexico set. "It's an assistant director that picked the hot weapon off of the cart and gave it to Mr Baldwin." But Baldwin believed it was a cold or unloaded weapon. "The live weapon should never be anywhere near the prop ammunition." Thorp, a Stunt Guild of New Zealand member, said the use of weapons on productions involved safety briefings and often co-operation between different departments. "Say if you have a sci-fi show, a company like Weta or the art department might add moulding to weapons," Thorp said. "Generally the rubber guns are under the art department." Different stunts could require different weapons and techniques. Thorp said sometimes a computer-generated muzzle flash was used on scenes. "Even if it's a rubber weapon, treat every weapon as if it's loaded." Thorp said after more ad-hoc approaches a few decades ago, New Zealand laws now made producers and department heads responsible for ensuring safety was taken seriously. "Definitely in New Zealand, the standards around this sort of thing in my experience are super-rigorous." Alec Baldwin in Santa Fe with Halyna Hutchins' husband Matt and Matt's son after the shooting incident. Photo / Backgrid Other hazards could include rigging, but Thorp said the film industry adopted the best practices from arborists, scaffolders or other industries where rigging was used. He said the fact crew raised safety concerns on Rust before the shooting made the tragedy even more alarming. "Usually it's not just one thing that's gone wrong. There are multiple layers of mistakes that...
Paul Robert Coyle has a storied past when it comes to writing television, pun intended. He has worked on and contributed to scripts for "Simon & Simo," "Barnaby Jones," "CHiPs," "Superboy," and more, but most listeners today would know him best for his work on several Star Trek episodes and his time on "Hercules" and "Xena." Paul tells us about some of the Star Trek scripts he wrote or contributed to, including the DS9 episode "Whispers" and the VOY episode "State of Flux," where he conceptualized the character of Seska. He also tells us about learning how to write from Dorothy Fontana, his first meeting with Gene Roddenberry, and the debacle that was his attempt to write an episode of the Star Trek animated series. We also spend a little time discussing his time as a writer and producer on "Xena" and "Hercules," including the creation of their mirror universe and the time Paul R. Coyle was played by Michael Hurst in an actual episode! ICRT correspondent Ryan Drillsma sat down with newly-published author and Taiwan Prisoner of War Camps Memorial Society Director Michael Hurst MBE to discuss forgotten histories he has spent the past 24 years researching, documenting, and bringing into the public eye.
Rob pops in to talk us through some very fascinating nature related topics, plus a poem about creative block and Michael Hurst.
Friend of The Show Adam returns once more as the panel....well engages with Hercules in the Underworld A real mixed bag as Hercules has to figure out why the underworld is wrecked (it's a loose dog) and also has to murder his centaur frenemy for trying to assault his wife, so that that centaur bleeds all over a cloak so that that cloak can try to choke Hercules. Also Hercules fights Giant González. Also a loooooooooot of boring nothing happens that can make this one a slog. Look this movie starts out on New Year's Eve so this is why this is happening. We take a look at High School musical, one that Meg and Lucas like and Mark and Brian are....less than enthusiastic about. And that bubbling cauldron of not enthusiasm is going to go on for about two and a half hours. Reviewing High School musical - a sign that 2020 is still winning against all of us right up to the end. Finding Common Ground is a podcast dedicated to equipping its listeners with the tools needed to evangelize and grow in Christ. In this episode we are focusing on ministry and I invited my mentor/pastor to give us some insight and advice on this topic.
We are delighted to welcome Michael Hurst to the show for a wide-ranging discussion of his illustrious career. Michael is best remembered for playing Iolaus on Hercules: The Legendary Journey's & Xena: Warrior Princess, and for his directorial work on shows like Spartacus and Ash vs. Evil Dead. Ian & Michael talk at length about the influence that Hercules has had on the fantasy genre, opening the door for dozens of shows that followed. Michael recently appeared in the New Zealand production Dead, a hilarious and tender buddy cop comedy. Dead premieres on virtual cinemas on September 25th, with a VOD release on October 6th. Full of LGBTQ themes and making great use of the beautiful New Zealand landscape, Dead is a perfect choice for pandemic viewing.
