Almost 3000 years ago, the Ancient Greeks established what was a unique method of honoring their gods: an athletic competition. Men from city states all over the Greek world would come to Mount Olympus to compete. For those crowned champion, there were few honors greater. Over the centuries, more and more competitions were added until one day, an emperor put an end to everything until its modern revival. “I'll tell you a secret. Something they don't teach you in your temple. The Gods envy us. They envy us because we're mortal, because any moment might be our last.” We watched Wolfgang Peterson's sword and sandal epic ‘Troy' with our friend Chris Cirigliano. Based on Homer's the Iliad , this summer blockbuster had many turning their nose up at its historical inaccuracies and poor adaptation of the epic poem. There are no Gods, or Mount Olympus to be found here, but what it does have is a beefed-up Brad Pitt with bleach-blonde highlights. We talk about the wave of historical epics to follow Gladiator and if Troy exactly holds up as being one of the better ones. Would adding more camp or fantastical elements have helped its material? And more importantly, what are we to make of its ‘no homo' approach to cutting out the Achilles and Patroclus relationship? According to what we see portrayed here, history will say they were good friends. At a butt-numbing 196 minutes, it's one of the longest movies ever reviewed for the podcast. When King Minos of Crete demands fourteen young Athenians to feed to the monstrous Minotaur, Prince Theseus and a lively group of teenagers set sail. In Knossos, Minos expects his daughter Princess Ariadne to watch quietly as the Athenian tributes meet their gruesome deaths. But Eros, mischievous god of love, takes aim with his arrows, intertwining the fate of Theseus and Ariadne. Can our young heroes somehow change the destinies of everyone around them?
The following was recorded LIVE at the Bellhouse in Brooklyn NY on December 6th 2024. It features the combined majesty and genius of Eric Gersen (keys) and Sarah Mullins (Drums). For legal reasons we've been told we can't call this one Hadestown, despite the fact that both Hades and a Town are involved. Also at one point the keyboard instrument patch is so funny to us that we basically stop the show to march around for a while. You will know it when you hear it. GODS, they're just like us maybe? Welcoming TopLobsta & Dave of @NephilimDeathSquad (https://linktr.ee/nephilimdeathsquad) to the show tonight to discuss matters of great supernatural and cultural importance. Are the gods of Mount Olympus product of urban legend and folklore, or is it something else entirely? Did the CIA really remote view the Ark of the Covenant? Is the proverbial Red Pill the new Apple in the Garden of Eden? We're going to let it rip tonight, and there will also be time set aside to review this incredible tidal wave of Ghibli memes that are all over the place. Athena, goddess of wisdom and war, is also the goddess of weaving – remember how she taught Pandora? They stood together at a huge loom made from tree branches, with clay weights on the bottom of each warp thread. Those ancient looms are rare these days – but we found one in an apartment in upper Manhattan, where scholar Beth Clancy weaves both cloth and stories. Join us as we visit Beth for this mythlet on the power of weaving in the mythical past – and in our own time!Big thanks to Beth Clancy for letting us record her, to David Goren for his field recordings of this ancient loom, and to Claire Walker-Wells and Yonatan Rekem for writing and production and to John Melillo for the great mix. And a shout-out to Gizelle Winter for her research and for getting the workmen outside of Beth's window to stop jackhammering for an hour so we could record her!By the way, we're hard at work putting the finishing touches on the new season of Live from Mount Olympus -- stay tuned! Do you have a favorite myth you'd like us to explore? Let us know! It could become part of a future season of Live from Mount Olympus. Email us at info@onassisusa.org. Can't wait to hear from you!

Throughout history, mountains have held deep spiritual significance—serving as meeting places between heaven and earth, battlegrounds of supernatural warfare, and stages for divine encounters. From the Garden of Eden to Mount Sinai, from the transfiguration of Christ to the crucifixion, the Bible is filled with moments where mountains play a pivotal role in God's plan for humanity. But why? What is the deeper connection between these sacred heights and the cosmic battle between good and evil?In this episode of the Revelations Podcast, host Reagan Kramer welcomes back pastor, author, and theologian Doug Van Dorn for an eye-opening discussion on biblical mountains, the divine council, and the supernatural forces that have shaped human history. Together, they explore how God uses mountains as places of revelation, how fallen entities have sought to corrupt them, and how Jesus' ministry strategically reversed the destruction caused by the enemy.Whether you're a seasoned Bible scholar or just beginning to explore the deeper spiritual dimensions of scripture, this episode will leave you with a greater understanding of God's plan and the victory we have in Christ. Here are three reasons why you should listen to this episode:Gain a deeper understanding of the biblical significance of mountains and their connection to the supernatural realm.Learn about the concept of the divine council and how it relates to mythological entities like Zeus and Baal, and their connection to Satan.Reflect on the practical implications of understanding the supernatural worldview, particularly in terms of overcoming worry and trusting in God's control.Become Part of Our Mission! And the question becomes, why would that be? And that's where you need to understand first of all, that God is meeting with people on all of these mountains.”The "axis mundi," a concept describing mountains as divine meeting points, reveals their role as a bridge between heaven and earth.Mountains hold significance not only in the Bible but also in global mythologies, including Mount Olympus and sacred Native American sites.Isaiah 14 introduces the “mount of assembly,” linking biblical mountains to divine councils where heavenly beings gather.[5:10] Divine Council and Mythological ConnectionsMountains serve as the setting for the divine council, where God meets with angels and heavenly beings to rule over creation.Ancient mythologies mirror biblical narratives, with figures like Zeus and Baal representing the same rebellious entity—Satan.Mount Zaphon, recognized as Baal's sacred mountain, connects directly to the divine council and the spiritual battle against false gods. The fall of Lucifer in Isaiah 14 echoes the rebellion of spiritual beings, linking the serpent in Eden to later deceptions throughout history.[17:42] Eden and the Divine CouncilThe Garden of Eden is depicted as a mountain, a place where heaven and earth intersect.Adam and Eve's use of fig leaves for covering may symbolize an early attempt to seek refuge in fallen supernatural beings.Satan's jealousy over humanity's God-given authority fueled his deception in Eden, setting the stage for spiritual warfare. The Edenic narrative connects to a larger biblical pattern of rebellion, redemption, and the ongoing struggle between good and evil.[24:01] The Post-Flood Rebellion and the Return of the NephilimFollowing the flood, fallen angels were imprisoned in "gloomy chains of darkness," as described in 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 6.Despite this judgment, the Nephilim reappear after the flood, indicating a renewed rebellion by supernatural forces.Ancient texts, including the Book of Enoch, describe how 200 fallen angels conspired to corrupt humanity. The struggle between God's people and these rebellious beings continues throughout Scripture, reinforcing the need for spiritual vigilance.[36:29] Moses, Mount Sinai, and the Law as a Divine RevelationMount Sinai is a sacred site where God revealed His law to Moses, establishing a covenant with Israel.Patterns in Scripture link Sinai to Eden and the future Temple, each acting as a central place of divine presence and instruction. The tabernacle mirrors the structure of the mountain, symbolizing levels of access to God's holiness. The law delivered at Sinai not only governed Israel but also foreshadowed Christ's fulfillment of righteousness.[40:16] The Golden Calf and IdolatryThe Israelites, fearing God's presence, attempted to worship Him through an idol, reshaping Him into something they could control.[41:02] Doug: “Idolatry is we're going to make that God that's up there come and be in this calf, so that we can somehow manipulate him because that's too terrifying for us.”The golden calf represented a common struggle—seeking to domesticate God rather than submitting to His true nature.Idolatry in all forms distorts faith, leading people to trust in tangible symbols rather than divine truth.Understanding this historical moment sheds light on the continuous human tendency to replace God with lesser things.[43:58] Jesus' Ministry and Supernatural BattlesEach phase of Jesus' ministry strategically dismantles Satan's authority over the world.[48:27] Doug: “Jesus's ministry is a multiple phased attack on Satan, and you have to understand some cosmic geography, and some of the motifs we've been talking about here are also very helpful.”The region of Bashan, known as "the land of the serpent," becomes the battleground where Christ begins His campaign against darkness.Key moments—including His temptation in the wilderness, His healing miracles, and His transfiguration—symbolize a reclaiming of territory from the enemy.Through these events, Jesus openly declares war on the forces of darkness, establishing His dominion over both heaven and earth.[52:48] Jesus' Death, Resurrection, and AscensionCalvary stands as the cosmic mountain where Jesus' sacrifice defeats sin and death.Descending into Hades, Christ proclaims victory and liberates those who awaited redemption. His resurrection seals His triumph, securing authority over all spiritual forces.By ascending to the right hand of God, Jesus asserts His role as the ultimate conqueror over evil.[57:10] Practical Implications of a Supernatural WorldviewThe desire for control, often expressed through worry and fear, stems from spiritual forces working against faith.Trusting in God's sovereignty dismantles the illusion of control and realigns believers with divine truth.Spiritual warfare manifests not only in extraordinary events but in daily battles over faith, trust, and obedience.Understanding Christ's victory allows believers to walk in peace, embracing their role in God's kingdom rather than being consumed by speculation about the future. About Doug Van Dorn Doug Van Dorn is a pastor, author, and theologian known for his deep exploration of biblical mysteries and the supernatural realm. With over two decades of pastoral experience, he has dedicated his work to uncovering the spiritual battles woven throughout Scripture, from the Nephilim and the Divine Council to the cosmic significance of mountains in biblical history. As the author of Giant Sons of God and Rings of Revelation, Doug bridges ancient texts, historical research, and theological insight to reveal the hidden layers of God's plan and the forces at work against it.Beyond writing, Doug is the host of the Giant Steps podcast and co-host of Iron and Myth, where he collaborates with other scholars to discuss the supernatural foundations of the Bible. A fellow at the Institute for Biblical Anthropology, he is also a speaker and researcher who challenges believers to embrace a biblical worldview that acknowledges the unseen realm. You're listening to "Goddess of the Hunt" by Dipsea: The women warriors who train under Artemis are the most fearsome in all of Mount Olympus. In exchange for her guidance, she only asks for one thing: they forgo the distraction of love and lust and take a vow of chastity. But when a wild nymph comes to train in the glade, she finds the binds of her own vow to be increasingly challenging… and when she sets out with Callisto to defend the glade from an intruder, she finds she cannot keep her promise. In this chapter, an intruder enters the glade, and Artemis sets out to find him alone. But the newly trained warrior, Callisto, wants to join. They argue about the safety of the endeavor, but ultimately journey out together. And when they take shelter at a shrine in the forest and a storm sets in, they are forced to spend the night sleeping in the same bed. Put on your laurel wreath. Today we're joining the gods and taking on Kaos, Netflix's new black comedy series that reimagines the Greek myths. The show follows Zeus (played by Jeff Goldblum) as he struggles to rule over Earth and The Underworld from a gaudy mansion on Mount Olympus. You'll recognize a lot: the Minotaur and Orpheus myths, the fates, the furies, Medusa in middle management and cameos from the likes of Eddie Izzard and Billie Piper. Why are the Greek myths so endlessly popular? What do we want out of our adaptations? And did this one live up? In the clever new Netflix series Kaos, the Greek Gods are a rich and powerful modern-day family. They're led by an impulsive and deeply insecure Zeus (Jeff Goldblum), who lives on Mount Olympus with his wife Hera (Janet McTeer). But there is a plan to overthrow Zeus that depends on a slew of gods, demigods and mortals working together, whether or not they are aware of the roles they each are playing.Subscribe to Pop Culture Happy Hour Plus at plus.npr.org/happyhourLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Olympics opening ceremony sparks outrage with drag queens parodying Last Supper: 'Gone completely woke'Fox News, By Alexander Hall, on July 26, 2024https://www.foxnews.com/media/olympics-opening-ceremony-sparks-outrage-drag-queens-parodying-last-supper-gone-completely-wokeThe Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony ignited a storm of controversy, primarily due to a performance that some viewers misinterpreted as a parody of the Last Supper rather than an homage to Greek mythology. This artistic display, featuring drag queens and various historical figures, aimed to celebrate the rich cultural and religious tapestry that is a fundamental aspect of the Olympic Games' history. Despite its intentions to honor the ancient gods of Mount Olympus, the performance was perceived by some Christians as a direct affront to their faith. The controversy highlights a deep-seated tension between traditional religious beliefs and modern interpretations of cultural expressions. Critics, particularly from American political spheres, labeled the performance as indicative of "cultural rot," suggesting that deviation from Christian norms represents a decline in Western civilization. This criticism echoes historical patterns where specific religious groups have been blamed for societal decline, reflecting a recurring theme of attributing moral and cultural decay to perceived threats against religious orthodoxy. The discussion extends to the broader debate on how religion influences perceptions of cultural and artistic expression. Some argue that the backlash reveals a discomfort with the depiction of non-Christian gods, which is seen as a violation of Christian commandments to honor no other gods. This response underscores a broader issue of religious exclusivity and the challenges of integrating diverse beliefs within a globalized cultural framework. The conversation also touches on the nature of respect and the fragility of faith. One perspective suggests that if a particular artistic expression poses an existential threat to one's beliefs, it may reflect a deeper insecurity about the robustness of those beliefs. The assertion is that genuine respect involves recognizing and accepting differing views without perceiving them as personal attacks. This notion aligns with the idea that respect should extend to people, not necessarily to their ideas, especially when those ideas are critiqued or challenged. The episode reveals a broader issue within contemporary discourse: the tendency of some groups to view any deviation from their beliefs as a personal affront. This perspective often manifests in attempts to silence or discredit differing viewpoints rather than engaging in constructive dialogue. The controversy surrounding the Paris 2024 opening ceremony serves as a microcosm of these larger cultural and religious dynamics, reflecting ongoing debates about the role of religion in public life and the limits of artistic expression. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.31.3 featuring Infidel64, Cindy Plaza, Eli Slack and Kelley LaughlinBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

How does a leader evolve the business and their role for future time horizons? In this episode, Rich sits down with Assaf Resnick, CEO of BigPanda. Assaf's journey is anything but conventional—transitioning from venture capitalist at Sequoia Capital to founding a successful software company. He shares invaluable insights on fostering a first-team culture, maintaining differentiation in a competitive market, and mastering strategy iteration for long-term success.---------Key Quotes:“I've got a framework for my job description around people, strategy, execution, and cash which are four big buckets that you need to all be in good shape in order to succeed.”“Every six months or so, I sit down and I re-architect my CEO job description.I sit down and I start with a blank sheet of paper and I ask myself, Alright, what kind of CEO does this company need me to be right now? What was I doing that I don't need to be doing anymore? What do I need to start doing? And what does that mean for me in terms of, are there any skill gaps that I need to bridge? Are there any behavior gaps that I need to bridge? Are there any knowledge gaps that I need to bridge?”“When you get to a certain scale, you've really got to start thinking in 3 year horizons. When you start getting near $100 million business and above, that ship moves a little slower. And so you've really got to start layering on 3 year visions of where's the market going, how am I capitalized, what are the big bets I'm making. And then you have to think about how do you operationalize that strategy? How do you make sure that everyone in your company is really, really clear about where we're headed as a company and what does that mean for my team and for me personally. That's a lot of work.”“I want to make sure that it's really, really thoughtful and it's been prepared with all the stakeholders in mind. I do prefer that strategy is done in iteration. That's very important for me. So don't go into your cave and come back in two months and present to me and the executive staff. Here is my vision from Mount Olympus, because it could be all wrong. I'd rather someone come and create and make it an iterative process with myself and the stakeholders involved.”“You need to be really, really clear about your foundational differentiators. You need to be really, really clear about what is it that I'm doing that is fundamentally different from anything anyone else can get in the market. And that could be in your technology, that could be in your services. That could be in your go to market and you have to be really, really honest with yourself. Do I have meaningful differentiation and is that leading to really good outcomes? And if you don't, you have to go on a spiritual journey to figure out what is my vision to produce that significant differentiation?”Practice Makes Profit: Why differentiation is crucial to beat your competition and how to confirm your core of differentiation using the Differentiation Detector tool. Directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, Hercules is the animated musical fantasy film, loosely based on the legendary hero Heracles (known in the film by his Roman name, Hercules), a son of Zeus in Greek mythology. Luke and Jae journey back to the legendary times of Ancient Greece (also known as 1997) to revist this Walt Disney Feature Animation produced film. Hercules (Tate Donovan), a son of gods, was snatched as a baby by Hades (James Woods) and forced to live among mortals as a half-man, half-god. Now a teenager, Hercules needs to perform a rite of passage on Earth to prove himself worthy of living with the gods on Mount Olympus. With his plucky satyr sidekick, Philoctetes (Danny DeVito), along for the ride, Hercules must learn how to use his strength to defeat a series of evil creatures.
Kimber enjoyed an active, nature-filled upbringing despite being born with a terminal transverse defect, resulting in an underdeveloped right hand. Her parents, particularly her supportive father, encouraged her to pursue her interests. Kimber's mother, who overcame a brain tumor and Cushing's disease, was initially worried but hopeful for Kimber's future. Her father focused on finding activities in which Kimber could excel. At 28, a breakup led Kimber and a friend to join the Mountaineers club, where they trained in rock climbing, glacier travel, and ice climbing. This training culminated in climbing Mount Olympus, the Tooth, and Mount Rainier within nine days. This transformative experience shifted her focus to climbing, leading her to become a semi-professional athlete while continuing her teaching career. Her heartbreak became the catalyst for a decade-long climbing journey supported by sponsors like North Face. Her supportive parents initially struggled with guilt and uncertainty about their child's future but now take pride in Kimber's achievements, following her journey through social media. Kimber is actively involved with the Mountaineers, having progressed from a skeptical reception due to her disability to becoming the chair of the committee. She continues to lead and mentor climbers, travel internationally, and plan future climbs, including personal milestones like getting married. Looking ahead, Kimber aims to tackle more significant climbs worldwide, including returning to Alaska. She is passionate about exploring and pushing the boundaries of what is possible for adaptive climbers.
There was a time when religion was cool. Like when jacked dudes threw lightning and women wielded armor and spears in the heavens and under the waves. When the sun traveled across the sky being pulled by a golden chariot. When people believed in the Gods of Olympus. Greek Mythology has it all, Deities, Drama, Scandal, Affairs, like a lot of affairs, mostly by one guy, and he just so happens to be the main guy Zeus. But before he was trying to nail all of Greece he was the child of the Titan Cronos, who ate all his kids. Then there's the story of Cronus himself. The legends and stories of Greek Mythology may sounds familiar because they've been borrowed from and adapted throughout history innumerable times, but like all things there is an origin story. Tune in here to see how it all got started. Disclaimer: Zeus sexually assaults a lot of people, we discuss it, kind of a big part of his narrative, just letting you all know.

The geography of the sky owes a lot to Claudius Ptolemy. He was a Greek astronomer who lived and worked in Alexandria, the capital of Greek-controlled Egypt. Almost 1900 years ago, Ptolemy published one of the most important astronomical works in history. Known as the Almagest, it contained Ptolemy's models of the motions of the Sun, Moon, and planets, and much more. One of its most important features was a catalog of stars and constellations. It listed 48 constellations visible from the northern hemisphere, most of which had been around for thousands of years. And, thanks to Ptolemy, they're still with us today. The list includes Hercules, the strongman. The constellation is in the east and northeast at nightfall, and swings high overhead during the night. “Hercules” is the Roman version of Heracles, a son of Zeus, the king of the Greek gods of Olympus. His mother was not Zeus's wife, Hera, and Hera wasn't happy about the situation. She tried to kill the baby, but he survived. She then set about making his life miserable. Hera drove the adult Heracles mad, causing him to kill his family. To atone for his crimes, he was given 12 labors to complete — tests of strength, courage, and skill. Eventually, Hera relented, and allowed Heracles to join the gods on Mount Olympus — and to be placed among the stars — one of the constellations preserved by Claudius Ptolemy. We'll have more about Hercules tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield
