The horror community continues to be rocked with sad news. Bruce Campbell's announcement is one of the most painful. The latest installment of the Scream franchise has polarized audiences, but has not stopped it from being a success. Will the Maniac Cop reboot do as well? There is no doubt that Corey Feldman was one of the biggest stars of the 1980s. What has been lost in all the nonsense that has plagued his life since then is what an amazing actor he was. We jumped at the chance to review Corey Feldman vs the World. In a documentary filled with shocking moments, the biggest may be that it has little to do with his acting heyday and is still a riveting watch. It can be described as a cautionary tale, a trashy reality show, and a story about a villain who is also a victim. With unprecedented access and an interesting approach to documentary filmmaking, it is a must-watch. There was a time when exploitation movies did not care about story. It was all about characters and moments and pushing things to the extreme. It did not always work out, but the results were pretty amazing when it did. Still, with the changing times came a decrease in these types of films. Dolly is a throwback to those simpler times. It is a battle for survival that is all about gore and attrition. It will end up being one of the most disgusting things released this year. The protagonist/antagonist dynamic is fantastic and the grainy look adds to the tense atmosphere. Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! This February we're kicking off our “Fast February” series, where we cover the movies that made Vin Diesel a star and taught the world to live their lives one quarter mile at a time, The Fast & Furious franchise! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Bill Mueller discuss the one that started it all, 2001's The Fast and the Furious!Limp Bizkit! Ja Rule! Cheesy lines! Chunky boots that would make Guy Fieri jealous! A fittingly quick and entertaining pace! Recognizable Los Angeles locations! Questionable car talk! Exciting new home video technology! Legally purchased DVD players! Overheated manifolds! Reckless contempt for carpooling! Shockingly organized crowds of young, illegal street racers! A guy playing guitar at a party! Product placement for Pizza Hut, Corona, and most-notably, the nitrous oxide brand NOS! A great high-speed heist to open the movie and plenty of (mostly) real stunts and action! Occasional surreal, anime-influenced racing scenes years before the Speed Racer movie came out! A versatile cast of young actors on the verge of stardom, including Vin Diesel with a rare shred of humility, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez laying the foundation for one of cinema's most iconic female action heroes, and Matt Schulze making the most of his very punchable face! A 2001 time capsule which may have borrowed heavily from Point Break, but still has great chemistry between the two leads with some impressive world building and story mechanics, and would surprisingly go on to become one of the biggest and most influential action franchises in movie history! In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Spring Breakers, The Beekeeper, Lucio Fulci's dance-themed giallo Murder Rock, and Sam Raimi's return to horror, Send Help! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Tom Hanks did a movie called “Cast Away” almost 30 years ago where his only “companion” on a remote tropical island was a volleyball named Wilson. Fast forward to now, and in this episode's movie “Send Help”, we're shown two people that are also trapped on a remote tropical island who would've preferred their only “companion” there was a volleyball. Rachel McAdams plays Linda Liddle and Dylan O'Brien plays her corporate boss, Bradley Preston, and they're both trapped in the middle of nowhere after their corporate jet crashes. Linda back in the world was the hard working company employee, but because she's socially awkward, gets passed over for promotions. Bradley is the smarmy, narcissistic, cruel owner of the company, only because he got it handed down to him by his Daddy, the company founder. He treats Linda like dirt even though her work keeps the company afloat. Next thing you know the tables are turned on a remote tropical island, where Linda is the boss and Bradley is the helpless subordinate, because Linda has survival skills and he doesn't. Bradley doesn't like this arrangement one bit, but Linda of course loves it. Even though Linda helps nurse him back to health and provides food and shelter for Bradley, he still is who he is. Also, Linda doesn't ever want to leave this island, and the new power dynamic. This leads to some bloody conflict and chaos. Is it worth going to the theater to see everything that happens? Watch this episode to find out! “Send Help” also stars Dennis Haysbert, Edyll Ismail, Xavier Samuel, Chris Pang, Thaneth Warakulnukroh, Emma Raimi, Kristy Best, Francesca Waters and Olivia Sawyer. Episode 186 - Campbell's Kingdom (1957) "Rugged Wildcatters...Fighting The Treacherous Might Of The Canadian Rockies" Grab your parka and get ready for a trip to the Canadian Rockies, because 1957's Campbell's Kingdom is a gloriously old-school adventure that absolutely bursts with high-stakes drama and breathtaking scenery. If you're in the mood for a classic "ripping yarn," this is the film for you. It's a story of grit, oil, and one man's incredible race against time, all set against one of the most stunning backdrops ever captured on film. At the heart of the story is the wonderfully charismatic Dirk Bogarde as Bruce Campbell. Given a grim health diagnosis, Bruce inherits a patch of land in Alberta known as "Campbell's Kingdom." He's told it's worthless, but his grandfather died believing there was oil under that rocky soil. With nothing left to lose, Bruce sinks his last penny and every ounce of his failing strength into proving him right. This is where the fun really starts. The film is a fantastic story of the underdog. Bruce is a man with a dream, facing down a world of naysayers. This includes the slick, menacing villain Owen (played with wonderful steel by Stanley Baker) and a looming deadline from a hydro-electric company threatening to flood the entire valley. But Campbell's Kingdom isn't just a character drama; it's a grand spectacle! Director Ralph Thomas makes the Canadian Rockies a character in their own right. The Vistavision and Technicolor cinematography is simply spectacular, with sweeping vistas of snow-capped mountains, turquoise lakes, and rugged forests that will have you longing for the great outdoors. The action builds to a truly thrilling climax. As Bruce and his small, loyal crew drill desperately for their "black gold," the tension mounts. Will they strike it rich before the dam floods them out? Will Owen's schemes succeed? The final sequences are pure, high-adventure magic, delivering a payoff that is both exciting and deeply satisfying. Sure, it's a film of its time, with earnest heroes and clear-cut villains, but that's precisely its charm. Campbell's Kingdom is a wonderfully made, optimistic, and thrilling piece of classic British cinema. It's a feel-good movie about betting it all on a dream, and it leaves you with a real sense of exhilaration. In this episode of Cult of the Living Dead, we brave the apocalyptic world of Black Friday, where retail hell turns literal as a parasitic alien outbreak crashes the biggest shopping night of the year. The Dale, Cea, and Twan break down how the film recreates what it's like to work retail, and how the customers are the real monsters all along. We dig into the the underwhelming story and how not even Bruce Campbell could save this movie from the bargain bin. We ask whether Black Friday is a goofy creature feature, a workplace satire, or the world's most cathartic therapy session for anyone who's ever worked a holiday shift.

Welcome to the podcast where we don't review movies—we aggressively scream about them like gremlins who found a mall PA system. Happy Halloween!Evil Dead II was not the sequel to The Evil Dead that Sam Raimi intended. With a bigger budget, and more experience, he essentially remade the first film with a comedic twist. Released in 1987, Evil Dead II became the perfect bridge between horror and comedy.Ash Williams transforms from every man survivor to wisecracking action hero. Campbell's physical comedy is next-level; the guy gets beaten up by his own possessed hand. His performance became so iconic, it launched an entire franchise and Ash as a cult hero. Practical effects, makeup, and prosthetics created some truly memorable (and gross) moments.Evil Dead II helped define the horror-comedy genre and influenced countless filmmakers. It became a cult classic that's still celebrated decades later, leading to Army of Darkness and eventually the Ash vs Evil Dead TV series. Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi became legends in genre filmmaking.Evil Dead II proved you could be terrifying and hilarious at the same time. It's a masterclass in creative filmmaking on a budget, and proof that sometimes the best sequels are the ones that aren't afraid to reinvent themselves.Groovy.I would love to hear your thoughts on Evil Dead II !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! Before 20-year-old Sam Raimi could make The Evil Dead, he had to convince investors that three friends from Michigan could pull off a horror masterpiece. Enter "Within the Woods," a short film that became the ultimate pitch; screened across Detroit until enough people bought in. The result? An initial $85,000 and a one-way ticket to a freezing, abandoned cabin in Tennessee with no heat, no plumbing, and 12 weeks of pure filmmaking chaos.Bruce Campbell's on-screen suffering was real—those bruises, cuts, and exhausted reactions weren't acting. The crew ended up living in the dilapidated cabin, inventing techniques and visual effects out of creativity and desperation. It was the epitome of low budget, inexperienced but passionate filmmaking. The Evil Dead could have easily disappeared into low budget horror movie obscurity, though. They struggled to find domestic distribution until Stephen King saw it at Cannes and called it "the most ferociously original film of the year." That single endorsement transformed everything. When it was released in the UK, it became the best selling VHS of the year in 1983. It was subsequently banned as the "number one video nasty" in the UK, and called too extreme for mainstream distribution. Thanks, Mary Whitehouse. The Evil Dead rewrote the rules. It proved indie horror could be artful, that gore could be kinetic poetry, and that a cabin in the woods could become the most terrifying place on Earth. It showed a generation of filmmakers that you don't need studio money to make something revolutionary; you just need vision, determination, and friends willing to suffer for the cause.I would love to hear your thoughts on The Evil Dead (1981) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! The cult movie actor starred in Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead" – an absolute horror classic. When we talked to Bruce in 2011 he spoke with our correspondent Jordan Morris about the DIY aesthetic of his projects, obsessive fans, and how he came to make cult horror movies.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
