Some commissioners present Shat The Movies with films they admire, hoping for low wipe scores and eternal glory in the Pantheon of Shat. Others serve us straight from toilet, understanding their favorite films are turds and deserve a whole roll of TP. Listener Will C. is the latter. We're kicking off 2022 with "Masters of the Universe," a movie that makes "Star Wars" look like irrefutable science and makes "Conan the Barbarian" feel Oscar-worthy. This one's a real battle between our love of campy schlock and the hard truth that big budgets don't always mean good cinema. Was the Sorceress perfection or pointless? Should the movie have focused on Earth or Eternia? Was Dolph Lundgren a god or a goober? Is this Courteney Cox in her prime, and how do you pronounce Frank Langella? The Shat Crew debates all this and more while agreeing on one thing: Fuck Gwildor. Today on the show we have one-half of the writing team that wrote the record-breaking Marvel film Spider-Man: No Way Home, Erik Sommers. For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero's identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange's help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who've ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse. In addition Sommers co-wrote scripts for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Spider-Man: Far From Home, The Lego Batman Movie and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle with Chris McKenna. Erik started his career in television and wrote on the ground-breaking show Community under show runner Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty).Erik tells me how working with Dan changed how he wrote and how he uses Dan Harmon's Story Circle in his writing today. We discuss how he got the Spider-man gig, how he writes with his partner Chris, what it's like working inside the Marvel Studios machine and dealing with the pressure of writing Spider-Man.I watched the new Spider-Man and I have to say it's the best Spider-Man film yet. Get ready to have your nostalgia heart-strings pulled in the best way possible. Erik and Chris did a fantastic job writing the stand-alone film, while still weaving in the larger MCU narrative, not an easy thing to do.Enjoy my conversation with Erik Sommers.

Bible Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:10Levi sat in the comfortable cinema chair with a big tub of buttered popcorn in his lap and a large soda in the drink holder. He had been wanting to see this movie for weeks, and so far, it was worth the wait! Then the screen darkened and Levi sat upright in his seat. He could tell Uncle Nick felt a little tense too.At the sound of heavy breathing and footsteps, Levi gripped the arms of his chair, not taking his eyes off the movie screen. Everyone in the theater was silent as they watched the shadowy villain creeping closer to the unsuspecting teenager. Where was that superhero? Then out of the sky flew the hero, mighty and powerful, cape blowing behind him. Levi and others whooped and clapped when the hero finally captured the bad guy."Great movie!" Levi told his uncle as they walked to the parking lot. "Thanks for taking me, Uncle Nick. I always love the part when the good guy gets the bad guy!"Uncle Nick started up the car then turned to Levi. "That's why it's so great to be a Christian. We know for sure, right from the start, that the good guy defeats the bad guy.""What are you talking about?" Levi asked."Jesus!" exclaimed Levi's uncle. "He is the biggest superhero of them all." Uncle Nick backed the car out and headed for home. "Jesus triumphed over Satan when He rose again after dying on the cross for our sins. He defeated death so we could be rescued." "So how come there are still bad guys doing bad things if Jesus won?" asked Levi."Because Jesus wants to give everyone a chance to be rescued before He gets rid of sin forever," explained Uncle Nick. "Christians realize that no matter what awful things we have done or continue to do, we have already been rescued by Jesus. And one day Jesus will come back and make everything in the world right. Then everyone will know that God is in control, not Satan."Levi took the last swig of his soda. "I guess knowing the ending of the story sure makes things a lot less scary!" - Bonnie CarrHow About You?Who is your hero? Who do you count on when you're in trouble? Jesus has already defeated sin and death. Yes, Satan is still out there stirring up trouble, but if you believe that Jesus has already won the battle with the Bad Guy, then you can feel much less frightened about the hard, scary things in life. Jesus has rescued you, and one day He'll come back to get rid of evil forever!Today's Key Verse:Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. Happy New Year from Hutch and Adam!
