Ryan Spitz is the owner and operator of Shasta Trail Runs. He recently mapped out and ran a 330 mile run from Arcata to Bunny Flats on Mt. Shasta in 5 1/2days. This route will become the longest point to point ultra marathon in the country beginning with the first event starting in 2020. His other current project is mapping out a route for a proposed circumferential trail around the base of Mt. Shasta. He intends to run the proposed route later this summer. #24 - Northern California is mostly wild lands. Much of the area is forested with great trails that are seldom used. This was the inaugural year of the Shasta Gateway 50m/50k/30k/10k. I finished the 50k and it was the hardest race I've ever accomplished. I go over in detail what made it hard and why I feel quite proud of myself for finishing. #9 - Sometimes, the most horrific events happen when we least expect. In 2018, the Carr Fire burn hundreds of thousands of acres of forest land and over a thousand homes in the Redding area of Northern California. Ryan Spitz had just taken over as owner and race director of Shasta Trail Runs. I talked to Ryan about the fire, the running community and what Shasta Trail Runs plans for 2019 and beyond.
