On Episode 208 of the Fish House Nation Podcast presented by Catch Cover, co-hosts Chris Larsen and Al Escobedo break down what to do when the fish just aren't biting in your wheelhouse. From making subtle location adjustments to changing presentations, lure profiles, colors, noise, and bait positioning, the guys share practical strategies to turn a slow day on the ice into a productive one. Chris and Al discuss how electronics, underwater cameras, tip-ups, and sonar can help you confirm whether you're actually on fish, while also explaining when too much technology—or even too much light and noise inside the fish house—might actually hurt your bite. They also dive into the importance of scouting, hole placement, generator noise, live sonar pressure, and how small changes like getting baits higher in the water column can trigger more strikes. If you've ever set up on what looked like the perfect spot only to struggle getting bites, this episode is packed with real-world ice fishing adjustments that can help salvage your next trip and put more fish on the ice. The best ice seasons are not always the ones with the most chaos, they are the ones that run smooth from first hut to last pullout. We're back with Donny Crowder of Hotbox Huts to debrief a Lake Simcoe winter that started early, stayed stable late, and gave his crew something rare: time. Time to stage “Hogtown” properly, time to avoid panic days, and time to connect with clients one-on-one so families leave with more than just fish photos. We get into what showed up under the holes this year, from big early-season perch to walleye talk and the odd sightings that make you question what you thought you knew about Simcoe. Donny also breaks down why underwater fishing cameras can be a game-changer for stationary ice fishing, especially for kids and new anglers who learn faster when they can actually see the bite and fish behaviour in real time. Then the conversation goes deep on ice safety. Donny explains how heavy snow, melt cycles, shoreline runoff, and springs can turn a “good” year into a constant monitoring job. He shares how measuring core ice temperature helps predict breakup, and why candled ice can look walkable while being structurally ready to separate when sun and water do their work.Off the ice, Donny walks us through his hundred-acre conservation-minded property, a thriving duck pond, semi-guided waterfowl hunts, and the realities of regenerative farming and making maple, birch, and silver maple syrup the old-school way. If you care about guided ice fishing in Ontario, hardwater safety, conservation, and building a life around the land, this one delivers. Subscribe, share the episode with a fishing buddy, and leave a review so more people can find the show.

A lonely ice fishing hut, a brutal Ontario snowstorm, and a series of slow, deliberate knocks at the door in the dead of night — tonight's Weekly Spooky episode delivers a deeply unsettling true scary story about isolation, fear, and the kind of experience that refuses to make sense long after the sun comes up.If you love true horror stories, creepy wilderness encounters, paranormal mysteries, strange campfire tales, and stories about being trapped alone in the dark while something waits outside, this one will get under your skin. Set miles from shore on a frozen lake, “KNOCK, KNOCK” turns an overnight fishing trip into a nerve-rattling nightmare of pounding walls, unseen visitors, and footprints in the snow leading in every direction. Lock the door, keep the heater running, and listen close.“KNOCK, KNOCK” — by Gary D, Ontario, Canada aka Blue Fire Raging

Send us Fan MailThis week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale caught up with 2 members of the USA Ice Fishing Team just before they left for Piteå Sweden For the World Ice Fishing Championship. Rigger had a fascinating talk with Thane Melton from Big Fork, MT who is the Vice President of the team and Joe Martinez from Utah who is the President of the team. The World Ice Fishing Tournament will take place on March 28th and 29th in Piteå, Sweden. The town of Piteå, Sweden is about the size of Kalispell Montana and is less than 100 miles from the Arctic Circle, so yes they still have ice. About 40 inches of it. You think that is wild just wait until you watch or listen to this podcast and hear the rules for this tournament. Let's put it this way, they run their tournaments quite a bit different than we do! Oh, by the way, part of those rules include that you can not use any powered augers! Yup all holes in the ice must be drilled with a hand operated auger. That 40 inches of ice does not sound so good now does it? Do not miss this podcast. You are going to be amazed by pretty much everything that Thane and Joe tell you including the fact that Team USA will be competing against 10 other countries! Ice fishing turns into a frozen-lake nightmare in this chilling winter horror tale. A widower heads out onto thick, steel-strong ice for a quiet day on the lake—testing every step like his grandpa taught him—until the silence becomes unnatural, the surface starts to crack, and something black and slick glides beneath his fishing hole. What begins as a peaceful survival routine spirals into supernatural terror tied to old local secrets: an abandoned lakeside development, whispers of missing children, and a backwoods history that never stayed buried. When the ice finally breaks, it isn't just freezing water waiting below—it's a monster that shouldn't exist, and a fight that demands more than courage to survive. If you love scary stories, winter horror, creature features, and supernatural suspense with a hard-hitting emotional core, this one will hook you and drag you under. Don't trust the quiet. Don't trust the thickness. And whatever you do… always check the ice.ON THE ICE — by Douglas Waltz

The host shares valuable insights about categorizing their catches, from 'dinks' to 'keepers' and 'slabs,' emphasizing the importance of letting smaller fish grow for future trips.A personal twist to this episode is Nick's new found motivation to slim down. Getting weight in check to help be healthy and maintain activity level. ICE Kicks Puppies. DHS Black Site Prisons. JD Vance is Garbage. A New Boat Strike. 17.5 Veteran Suicides Per Day. Super Bowl Picks and Bets, Ice Fishing, Chloe Kim Rocks Olympics. Trump is all gas, no brakes on this Super Bowl Friday—from posting a racist video from the White House depicting the Obama's as apes and escalating his war on the press, to unleashing ICE's culture of cruelty with gassed protesters, kicked‑in doors, kicked puppies and plans for giant warehouse‑style detention centers that could function as domestic black sites. In this all‑new episode of Independent Americans, Paul Rieckhoff welcomes back the iconic Rachel Maddow for a sharp, extended, urgent and surprisingly hopeful breakdown of what she calls a “mad king” moment—and why the real work now is taking away Trump's tools of power, from the Justice Department and ICE to the Pentagon and the Insurrection Act. Rachel rarely does podcasts, but she does this one hosted by her old friend. They chop it up on how authoritarians depend on institutional cowardice and public exhaustion, and why disciplined, non‑violent, mass resistance and strategic shaming still work—even against a president who seems beyond embarrassment. They highlight ICE's evolving archipelago of dark sites, Congress finally “getting up on its hind legs” with a “don't obey illegal orders” push, and the catastrophic failure of imagination that could come if Americans don't prepare now for an Insurrection Act deployment to crush future protests. It's not all darkness: Rachel gets personal and takes us to her ice‑fishing happy place in Western Massachusetts and explains why chasing pike through thigh‑deep snow is her metaphor for stubborn joy and resistance, while Paul salutes Chloe Kim's Olympic patriotism and life with a Jets‑fan kid. They close with a Super Bowl Football Friday segment—debating Patriots–Seahawks, Drake May's jitters and Sam Darnold's late bloom—and a cross‑jersey bet that will leave either Paul in Pats gear or Rachel in Seahawks colors. KT steps into his veteran‑anchor persona to deliver a flurry of winter stories that range from dangerous… to dumb… to downright unbelievable.KT describes witnessing an SUV pulling kids behind it on ice—one kid waterski‑style—and the crew spirals into stories, shock, and Skin asking Ben if he remembers that Rob Lowe hockey movie where someone cracks their head open on the rink.Plus, A man in Sanger fell through a pond trying to go ice fishing—in Texas. The crew debates the exact number of inches of ice required to not immediately sink.
This week we’re talking ice fishing and ice hockey! Nick Anthony from Ballard’s Resort on the Rainy River and Lake of the Woods joins us, so naturally we have to ask him about recent moves made by the Minnesota Wild and the struggles of the Golden Gophers before digging into ice fishing up north with Nick and Joe Henry. Bret, Dan and David discuss what the greatest ice fishing lure of all time is, Dan has a new name idea for his future nephew and almost burns artificial intelligence to the ground. Episode #253 - Ice Fishing Safety and Strategy: Tip-Ups, Moving Fish, and Avoiding Disaster with Matthew Crawford In this episode, I sit down with Matthew Crawford, a passionate Wisconsin angler who has built a reputation for sharing real-world fishing knowledge, honest experiences, and practical ice fishing tactics. Matthew walks me through how he went from casually fishing with family to becoming deeply committed to ice fishing during COVID, including the early mistakes that shaped how he fishes today. We talk about why movement is critical on the ice, how to use tip-ups more effectively, and how understanding fish behavior can turn slow days into successful ones. We also dive into ice safety in a very real way. Matthew shares a firsthand experience of falling through early-season ice and what he learned from it. It's a powerful reminder that ice fishing requires not fear, but respect, preparation, and caution. This episode is packed with Wisconsin-specific insight, tactical advice for ice anglers, and lessons that apply whether you're brand new to fishing or have been chasing fish for decades. Send us a textThis week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale interviews quite possibly the smartest person you will ever see on the Montana Outdoor Podcast! Dr Johnna Infanti is one of the top weather scientists around. When you listen to the Podcast you will learn that one of her many specialties is researching the climate patterns known as El Niño and La Niña. Those two opposing climate patterns can affect Montana's weather in major ways. Sometimes with good results and others, well, not so good. One of those has been affecting Montana recently in a rather strange way. Most everyone has noticed it, especially if you are an angler that has been wanting to get out on the ice but unfortunately has not found much to get on as well as those who have been wanting to play in the snow in the valleys. So, what is in store for Montana for the rest of the winter? More of the same or is it true that big changes could be on the way? Dr Infanti has the answers!Links:Dr Infanti gave out a ton of amazing information and she was kind enough to get us some links to get even more info. Earlier this month, one unlucky angler dropped his wallet through the ice of Monona Bay, and spent his weekend on a recovery mission. Our friend Pat Hasburgh, owner of D&S Bait and Tackle, would probably recommend putting your wallet in a secure spot before hitting the ice. Pat has all kinds of tips for ice fishers and the curious. He chats with City Cast Madison host Bianca Martin about how to safely fish on the Madison's lakes. Pat is the voice behind the weekly fishing report at 608-BIG-FISH.
