When we think about environmental impacts in the outdoors, we often focus on things we can see: litter left behind, eroded trails, overcrowded trailheads. But some of the most significant impacts are invisible, and they're showing up in places many of us consider pristine. In episode 208 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we're talking about microplastics in remote wilderness areas and what new research is revealing about how they get there. Joining me today is Dr. Tim Keyes.Prior to joining Welch College of Business & Technology in 2019, Dr. Keyes was employed by General Electric as a Senior Risk Analytics Manager for 22 years, and for seven years prior to that he worked as a Senior Systems Engineer at Measurex/Honeywell. He now consults with banks and nonprofits through his company, Evergreen Business Analytics, LLC.In addition to his professional work, Dr. Keyes leads adventure science expeditions with students to research air and water quality across the Northeast United States. He has summited all of the high peaks in the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains in New York, the Green Mountains in Vermont, and half, to date, of the high peaks in New Hampshire's White Mountains.Professionally, Dr. Keyes has published more than ten professional papers and holds seventeen patents related to risk analytics. His most recent refereed research was published in 2023 in the peer-reviewed Elsevier journal Heliyon. In 2025, an adventure science expedition he led received global attention for its potential impact on environmental health and backcountry recreation.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/outdoor.minimalist.book/Website: https://www.theoutdoorminimalist.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@theoutdoorminimalistBuy Me a Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/outdoorminimalistListener Survey: https://forms.gle/jd8UCN2LL3AQst976------------------Learn MoreResearch: https://adkh2h.org/wp-content/uploads/Return-to-Lake-Tear-Expedition-Report-September-2025.pdfGuardian Article: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/oct/13/microplastics-hiking-shoes-outdoor-gear Rozalia Project: https://www.rozaliaproject.orgFootwear Collective: https://earthdna.org/home/the-footwear-collective/Guppy Friend: https://www.patagonia.com/product/guppyfriend-microplastic-washing-bag/4260750820839.html

Anthony's running journey began back in 2007 while he was working in IT. Unhappy with his weight, he laced up for a change, and just two months later he was on the start line of his first 10K. By 2009 he'd run his first marathon, and by 2011 he was fully immersed in the world of ultrarunning.Years of racing and experimenting with his own fuelling strategies sparked a deeper interest in sports nutrition. Anthony went on to earn an Advanced Diploma in Nutrition and Weight Management, followed by a Nutrition Specialist Diploma. Combining his personal transformation with his growing expertise, he founded XMiles, a brand dedicated to helping endurance athletes fuel smarter and perform at their best. Thanks Harrier Trail Running for sponsoring this weeks interview. Thanks to Fenix Light UK, Voom & Altra 13 Valleys for supporting our January competitions. What happens when a once-fringe sport starts to go mainstream — and can it grow without losing its soul? In this episode of Trail Runner Nation, we sit down with Jamil Coury, founder and CEO of Aravaipa Running and publisher of UltraRunning Magazine, to explore the State of Trail and Ultrarunning in 2026. Jamil shares a 30,000-foot view of how the sport has evolved over the past decade, from participation and media coverage to rising expectations around professionalism and athlete experience. We discuss the emergence of 200+ mile races, the power of livestreaming and storytelling, and how technology is changing how runners train, race, and engage with the sport. The conversation also tackles cost, accessibility, and the growing presence of corporate influence, alongside the responsibility of race directors as stewards of ultrarunning's culture. Throughout it all, Jamil reminds us why the sport still works — community, shared suffering, and a deep respect between elites and back-of-the-pack runners alike. Emily Cameron joins the show to talk about building a career as a photographer and filmmaker in trail and endurance sports, from her roots in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to life in Athens, Georgia. Emily shares her background as a 2016 Olympic Trials qualifier in swimming and how that shaped her relationship with time, training, and burnout, plus the pivot into triathlon and eventually storytelling. The conversation dives into how she broke into the creative world through COVID-era portrait projects, the reality of cold emailing for work, what she has learned about trust and access when documenting athletes, and how Trailfolk came to life with Tara Dower and a crew that became part of the story. Emily also talks about creative problem solving at events and setting boundaries with social media to protect her own creative vision. This episode is edited and produced by the Sandyboy Productions Podcast Network.A big shout out to our new sponsor Precision Fuel & Hydration. Send us a text#364 - To start 2026 off right, I thought I would address some issues we runners have, and yes, I have these issues myself. Sometimes when we're disappointed in our running it can lead to more negatives. It can make us lose opportunities that might help us or be better for us in running. It's easy to let our negative thinking move our running in the wrong direction, so I hope these can help you in your running and start your new year off great! Every so often, someone comes along who doesn't just take on a challenge, they redefine what's possible.”Today's guest is exactly that. Trish Patterson is a force of nature: a runner with grit in her bones, fire in her stride, and a story that climbs higher than the ridgelines she loves. Whether she's chasing FKTs, tackling brutal mountain routes, or simply showing what's possible when determination meets heart, Trish brings an energy that lifts everyone around her.In this episode, we dive into the mindset behind her biggest adventures, the moments that shaped her, and the resilience that keeps her pushing forward when the terrain gets rough and the doubts get loud. Trish doesn't just run, she inspires, she challenges, and she reminds us why we fall in love with the mountains in the first place. Thanks to Fenix Light UK for supporting our January competition. In this episode of the Singletrack Podcast, I chat with sport scientist and physiologist Geoff Burns to unpack one of the biggest open questions in trail running right now: why shoe technology hasn't produced a single, decisive “Vaporfly moment” on the trails - and whether it ever will.Geoff explains why trail running is fundamentally different from road running when it comes to performance gains. While road shoes can be optimized for straight-line efficiency on uniform surfaces, trail shoes operate in a far more complex system - one shaped by uneven terrain, gradients, stability demands, traction, weight, and constantly changing conditions Geoff explains:* Why super-shoe logic breaks down on trails* The real role of foams, plates, and energy return off-road* Why shoe tech gains often disappear on uphill, downhill, or technical terrain* Whether trail shoes are nearing saturation—or still wide open for innovation* How weight, traction, durability, and stability compete with pure efficiency* Why different trail races may require entirely different “optimal” shoes* What shoe tech might be changing in the sportPartners:Norda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever made (https://nordarun.com/)Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next order (https://www.precisionhydration.com/planner/?utm_source=partner&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=singletrack)Momentous - use code SINGLETRACK for up to 35% off your first order (https://livemomentous.com/) deltaG Ketones - use code Singletrack20 at checkout on their website to get 20% off your next order (https://partners.deltagketones.com/SINGLETRACK20)Raide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains (https://raideresearch.com/)Gorewear - use code SINGLETRACKPOD30 at checkout on their website (bit.ly/3JVNIbL) to get 30% off your purchase.Support the show

What actually changed with David Roche's YouTube content and why did it work when so many running vlogs and films don't?In this episode of the Singletrack Podcast, I'm joined by running filmmaker and YouTube creator Jeff Pelletier for a deep, behind-the-scenes conversation about how trail running content is evolving and what Roche's Western States series revealed about the platform. We break down why YouTube rewards long-term storytelling over one-off films, how stakes and failure can be more compelling than winning, and why personality-driven channels consistently outperform brand-owned media. Jeff explains why Roche's rollout felt like a masterclass, how it changed expectations for branded content, and what brands, athletes, and creators still get wrong about YouTube. We also discuss:* Why most running brands fail on YouTube* How narrative arcs and episodic structure drive retention* The difference between short-form and long-form impact* Why YouTube is becoming the new television for endurance sports* What the next era of trail running media might look likePartners:Norda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever made (https://nordarun.com/)Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next order (https://www.precisionhydration.com/planner/?utm_source=partner&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=singletrack)Momentous - use code SINGLETRACK for up to 35% off your first order (https://livemomentous.com/) deltaG Ketones - use code Singletrack20 at checkout on their website to get 20% off your next order (https://partners.deltagketones.com/SINGLETRACK20)Raide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains (https://raideresearch.com/)Gorewear - use code SINGLETRACKPOD30 at checkout on their website (bit.ly/3JVNIbL) to get 30% off your purchase.Support the show

It's next to a very popular running route in San Francisco, yet few runners use it. And it's their loss. In this episode, Katie Asmuth and Leah Yingling reflect on a full year of The Trail Network Podcast and a year that reshaped the trail running landscape. They look back on standout moments from the sport and the show, from pregnancies and comebacks to breakthrough performances, surprise podiums, and the rise of longer distances like 200-mile races. The conversation touches on storytelling in trail running, why live coverage and long-form narratives are changing how fans connect to athletes, and how rankings, sponsorships, and community support influence the modern professional runner. They also explore accessibility in trail running, from sub-ultra distances to grassroots races, and share thoughts on training races, recovery, fueling, and setting the tone for the year ahead. First up, Tim Tollefson returns to the show. In some ways, trail running is still having its “What Are We Even Doing?” moment. Through that lens, we take a look at the UTMB era, the rise of pro circuits, what the pros care about, and what happens when a grassroots sport takes bigger steps towards big-time structure. After that, I'm joined by Alyssa Clark for a roundup of trail running business news and ideation.
