Steven D. Lavine is the former President of the California Institute of the Arts and he is currently the chairman of the American advisory board of the Thomas Mann House. The interview covered a wide range of topics, including Lavine's lifelong influences, the recent release of his new book Failure Is What It Is All About, and advice he would give to any aspiring artists.
Steven D. Lavine is the longest-serving president of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). The institute was born out of Walt Disney's vision for an art school over 50 years ago. CalArts had become embroiled in crisis until Steven became president, leading it to financial prosperity and international acclaim. When Steven took over the school, their debt was at 1.8 million out of a 16 million dollars budget. Steven served as its president from 1988 until 2017. During this time, CalArts became a pacesetter in domestic diversity, community engagement, international linkage, and cutting-edge production and presentation. Today, CalArts is the cradle of many Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize winners as well as Mellon and Guggenheim fellows, becoming a hotspot for American creativity. Steven's nearly 30-year tenure is the longest, not only in the history of CalArts but also one of the longest-serving college presidents in the United States. In this episode… Steven D. Lavine began his journey at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), almost certain to fail. He was faced with a 10% debt to budget ratio. A big supporter had become tired of giving more to the institution. He swam in a sea of ideas from everyone's opinions on how to proceed. These were but a few of the many failures the CalArts presidency faced. What then would a first-time college president do to provide lasting change? Steven takes us on a journey through these many challenges from 1988 until 2017 and how he pushed through them all. Find out how Steven wrought the $150 million dollar fundraising miracle for CalArts, whose previous highest raise was $2 million. In short, there's a lesson for every philanthropy professional in this episode. Listen to this installment of the Philanthropy212 Podcast with Penny Cowden featuring Steven D Lavine, the longest-serving President of CalArts. They discuss the travails of CalArts at the time Steven became president and how he led them out of the woods. Steven shares his leadership style throughout his time there, why it worked, and what he did when rebuilding CalArts after the 1994 earthquake. Stay tuned for these inspiring stories and more.
Steven Lavine has for four decades been an artistic, educational, and community leader in the United States and nationally. From 1988 to 2017 he served as President of the California Institute of the Arts, a period of sustained growth in programs, community engagement, enrolment, reputation and financial stability for the progressive multi-disciplinary arts college. Shortly after stepping down, he was recruited as Founding Director and then Chair of the Los Angeles Advisory Council for the Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles, which is devoted to bringing creative thinkers from Germany and the United States together around urgent contemporary issues, particularly the future of liberal democracy. Today, he divides his time between the Thomas Mann House and consulting with a broad range of progressive not-for-profit organisations. Before CalArts, Lavine was an Assistant Professor of English and American Literature at the University of Michigan and then Associate Director of the Arts and Humanities Division of the Rockefeller Foundation, where he supported reform of K-12 educational reform, experimental media, and the development of exhibition strategies for American minority and non-Western arts and cultures. He has co-edited two influential books about museum practices: Exhibiting Cultures: The Poetics and Politics of Museum Display and Museums and Communities: The Politics of Public Culture. Pamela speaks with Steven Lavine about the recent release of his biography: Steven D. Lavine – Failure Is What It’s All About. A Life Devoted to Leadership in the Arts. Steven also speaks about leading CalArts through a crisis following the Northridge Earthquake of 1994 and why art, the artistic process and the artists are so important today. Pamela will also speak with Joseph Davis, a senior in the Music Department who was unable to travel from Jamaica to the US to complete his senior year due to the pandemic. Joe performed at the Inauguration celebration for Vice President Kamala Harris with the California State Society and since the pandemic began, his YouTube channel has climbed to 733 subscribers.
106: Failure is What It’s All About (Steven Lavine)SUMMARYWhen Steven Lavine took the role of President at CalArts in 1988, the school - an experimental arts institution located just north of Los Angeles - was in danger of going bankrupt. In 1994, the Northridge earthquake rendered the campus uninhabitable. But Lavine piloted the school through those stormy waters, and today CalArts is thriving, with an endowment of $152 million and a ranking that places it among the top 10 fine arts schools in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report. The school is the cradle of many Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize winners, of Mellon and Guggenheim Fellows, and a hotspot of American creativity. For all of the successes Steven could rightfully celebrate, our conversation was even better because he is quick to point out the failures he’s experienced, and more importantly, what he’s learned from them. We discuss these critical learnings in episode #106 the Path, and even better, you can learn these valuable nonprofit leadership lessons too. ABOUT STEVENDr. Steven D. Lavine and Jörn Jacob Rohwer [24.03.2021] Why there is no greater success than failure: Jörn Jacob Rohwer's publication looks at how personal doubts and weaknesses became the basis of a leadership style based on listening, learning and consensus building. Lavine tells his personal story for the first time, talking about cultural politics, philanthropy, the avant–garde, his center of life Los Angeles, where he directed the California Institute of the Arts for three decades (1988-2017). Spurred by self–doubt and a desire to fail, he emerges as a subtle thinker, visionary, and transatlantic mediator between the worlds of art, education, and politics. The California Institute of the Arts: an arts college just outside Los Angeles. Opened 50 years ago, »CalArts« was long in crisis before Steven D.
