This conversation explores the complex relationship between American Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon and British Chancellor of the Exchequer Winston Churchill during the post-World War I era, an underexplored era of Churchill's career that foretold future Anglo-American relations during World War II. The discussion delves into their rivalry over war debt repayments, contrasting their personalities and approaches to diplomacy, and the impact of their interactions on Anglo-American relations. Jill Eicher, the author of 'Mellon VS. Churchill,' shares insights from her research, highlighting the challenges of uncovering this historical narrative and the lasting legacy of their dispute. Links Mellon vs Churchill (Bookshop.org link) Mellon vs Churchill (Amazon Link) Mellon vs Churchill (Blackwell's Link) Andrew Mellon (Wikipedia) No More Champagne (Amazon Link) Dinner with Churchill (Amazon Link) Dinner with Churchill (Bookshop.org link) Takeaways The rivalry between Mellon and Churchill shaped post-war economic policy. Mellon's approach was rooted in financial pragmatism, while Churchill was more idealistic. The capacity to pay principle was a key point of contention. Their meetings often failed to bridge their differences. Public opinion in both countries was influenced by press coverage of their rivalry. The 1929 stock market crash had significant repercussions for their relationship. Churchill's North American tour changed his perspective on the U.S. The unresolved debts from World War I remain a historical footnote. Lessons from their rivalry are relevant for today's financial leaders. The personal backgrounds of Mellon and Churchill influenced their diplomatic strategies. Sounds Bites "I did not find Churchill. Rather, I think he found me." (00:01:22) "Mellon and Churchill were both moving on to the world stage virtually at the same time… This made them rival debt collectors." (00:04:19-00:05:58) "Both Mellon and Churchill aspired to greatness. They were patriotic. They both had exceptional work ethics… However, they were oil and water in how they approached being statesmen." (00:08:07-00:08:29) "Churchill thrived in the public eye and he could change hearts and minds in a speech or on paper." (00:08:56) "Churchill was a sympathetic creditor too, but he was an indignant debtor when it came to repaying the United States. He fervently believed that all the war debts should be canceled." (00:10:24) "Even though they were in close proximity to each other, formally introduced, the day was about that special Anglo-American friendship… It just didn't extend to Mellon and Churchill that day." (00:12:31) "As Baldwin famously summed up British policy, he said, 'We will pay you if we must, but you will be CADs if you ask us to.'" (00:15:58) "In studying his speeches and published work during this period, I was absolutely ensorcelled by his gift with words." (00:17:41) "It is somewhat like the difference between math and poetry." (00:19:15) [On their different approaches to debt] "It raised that question of what do nations owe one another in terms of trust and honor?" (00:22:30) "World War I had cost Britain its financial supremacy and forced it to cede to the United States the role of banker to the world. That cost was seared into Churchill's heart." Mellon nu och då. Dialog eller monolog - kvinnorna har orden. Å så twistar vi på. Välkomna till avsnitt 136.
FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageReagan would be horrified by today's $36 trillion national debt—36 times the figure he found alarming in 1981. Yet history offers powerful lessons for growing our economy under this crushing weight through the success stories of three administrations that sparked extraordinary economic booms. The Coolidge administration of the 1920s provides our first blueprint. Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon implemented a remarkably effective strategy: slashing top tax rates from 73% to 25%, cutting federal spending from $5.1 billion to $3.1 billion, and reducing national debt by one-third. The results? A sustained 4% annual GDP growth, 70% surge in industrial output, and unemployment below 4%—the "Roaring Twenties" weren't just cultural, but economic dynamism unleashed through deliberate policy.Kennedy later bucked Democratic orthodoxy by cutting the top tax rate from 91% to 70% in 1963. Though his rhetoric emphasized employment goals, the mechanics mirrored Mellon's approach. The economy responded dramatically with growth hitting 5.8% in 1964 and 6.6% by 1966. Reagan made these connections explicit, implementing tax cuts that slashed rates from 70% to 28%. Despite criticisms about defense spending, the economy soared—4.6% growth in 1983, an astonishing 7.2% in 1984, followed by years of consistent 3.5-4.2% expansion. What's sobering is our current economic anemia. America hasn't experienced consecutive years of 3%+ growth since before 2005. The prescription for prosperity remains remarkably consistent across a century: slash taxes to stimulate investment, cut spending to shrink deficits, and pay down debt to free up capital. The blueprint exists—we need only the wisdom to follow it.Key Points from the Episode:• Coolidge and Treasury Secretary Mellon cut tax rates from 73% to 25% in the 1920s• Their formula: slash taxes, cut federal spending, pay down debt to free up capital• Result was 4% annual GDP growth and the "Roaring 20s" economic boom• Kennedy bucked Democratic orthodoxy with tax cuts from 91% to 70%• Economy responded with growth rates of 5.8% in 1964 and 6.6% in 1966• Reagan's tax cuts led to 4.6% growth in 1983 and 7.2% in 1984• America hasn't seen consecutive years of 3%+ growth since before 2005• Today's prescription remains the same: tax cuts, spending restraint, debt reductionJoin us for our next episode where we'll explore how the American economy functions like a race car, breaking down the mechanics of sustainable growth in more detail.Other resources: Want to leave a review? He was the strangest titan America ever produced: a whisper-quiet banker who turned systematic thinking into a superpower, building an industrial empire while barely raising his voice above a murmur. Andrew Mellon's story isn't just about money—it's about how patience, observation, and positioning can create more wealth than charisma ever could. But when the Great Depression hit, the very qualities that made him rich made him the perfect villain for a nation demanding change. Whether you're building a business, investing in the future, or seeking insights on strategic decision-making, Mellon's story reveals the power of patience, positioning, and playing the long game. Mellon, which masterfully chronicles his journey from shy Pittsburgh boy to industrial titan, Treasury Secretary, and philanthropist. The second source, 'Thomas Mellon and His Times', written by Andrew's father Thomas Mellon himself provides invaluable firsthand insights into the immigrant experience and the formation of the Mellon family's business philosophy in America. If this story captured your interest, we highly recommend both works – Cannadine's for its thorough examination of Andrew's profound impact on American business, politics, and philanthropy, and Thomas Mellon's autobiography for its intimate portrait of the family's rise from immigrant farmers to financial powerhouses in both nineteenth- and twentieth-century Pittsburgh.

In this episode of ITR Live, host Chris Hagenow and regular guest John Hendrickson welcome Amity Shlaes, a distinguished historian and leading expert on economic history. The conversation delves into the enduring significance of Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Warren Harding, exploring their relevance in today's political and economic landscape. Shlaes highlights the fiscal conservatism that defined their administrations, emphasizing the importance of limited government, balanced budgets, and economic growth. The discussion underscores how their leadership, particularly through the 1920 Republican platform, navigated the country out of debt and uncertainty following World War I. A key figure in this historical narrative is Andrew Mellon, Treasury Secretary under Harding and Coolidge. Shlaes explains Mellon's innovative tax policies, which demonstrated how lowering tax rates could stimulate economic activity, ultimately increasing government revenue—a principle echoed in modern conservative fiscal policy. Mellon's technical expertise in managing the national debt and his clear communication with the public earned him the trust necessary to implement bold financial reforms. The episode also addresses the challenges of promoting fiscal responsibility in modern politics. Hagenow and Shlaes discuss how the federal government's current debt crisis parallels the 1920s, underscoring the need for trust in leadership. Coolidge's honesty and transparency, as well as his ability to clearly articulate the benefits of fiscal restraint, are presented as a model for today's leaders. At the state level, the conversation celebrates Iowa's fiscal discipline under Governor Kim Reynolds, showcasing how states can lead by example in responsible governance. Shlaes notes that states, unlike the federal government, must balance their budgets, and their competitive nature can drive innovation and fiscal responsibility. The discussion also contrasts conservative and progressive economic philosophies, particularly around the legacy of the New Deal. Shlaes critiques the New Deal's long-term impact, arguing that its policies did not achieve the recovery often attributed to them. Instead, she emphasizes the importance of evidence-based policymaking and the role of states in fostering economic growth. Listeners are encouraged to explore the work of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation, which aims to educate future generations on the value of fiscal conservatism. The foundation's scholarship program provides a full ride to any college and introduces students to Coolidge's principles, emphasizing that Americans have a deep-seated capacity for responsibility and good governance. This episode offers a thought-provoking exploration of how lessons from the past can guide modern policy, highlighting the relevance of historical fiscal strategies in addressing contemporary economic challenges.

In December of 2023 for quite a few days, objects were seen hovering over US air base. In her quest for the White House, it seems as if Kamala Harris is doing everything in her power to disassociate herself with liberal ideas. So what, exactly, has happened to liberal politics in the United States today? That's exactly the question which the excellent young George Washington historian, Timothy Shenk, asks in his new book, Left Adrift. And in tracing the fate of liberal politics in America today, Shenk goes back to the Democratic party's two most influential political strategists of the Clinton era: Stan Greenberg and Doug Schoen. The story of these two Zeligs of the center-left, Shenk explains, helps us understand not only Kamala Harris' innate conservatism, but also the challenges (and perhaps opportunities) for American liberalism to reinvent itself in today's age of illiberal populism. Timothy Shenk is an assistant professor of history at George Washington University. A senior editor at Dissent magazine, he has written for the New York Times, the Nation, the New Republic, and Jacobin, among other publications. He received his bachelor's degree and PhD in history from Columbia University, has been a Mellon postdoctoral fellow at Washington University in St. Louis, and has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the New America Foundation. In this episode, I dive into Christopher Mellon's foreword for Luis Elizondo's book "Imminent: Inside the Pentagon's Hunt for UFOs." I analyze Mellon's powerful account of how the UAP issue transformed from a stigmatized topic to a legitimate national security concern. I highlight key points from Mellon's perspective, including the compelling evidence presented by Elizondo, the bureaucratic challenges they faced, and their efforts to bring the UAP issue to Congress and the public. I also discuss Mellon's reflections on past intelligence failures and how they relate to the current UAP situation. Throughout the episode, I offer my own insights as a former F-16 pilot and share my thoughts on the significance of this foreword for our understanding of the UAP phenomenon and the ongoing efforts to investigate it.Podcast published 27 August 2024.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/lehto-files-investigating-uaps--5990774/support.

With the recent release of Luis Elizondo's book, Imminent: Inside the Pentagon's Hunt for UFOs, Ryan revisits a classic episode of the podcast where he is joined by former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense and former Staff Director of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Christopher Mellon, and former U.S. Army Counterintelligence Special Agent and lead investigator of the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, Luis Elizondo. Mellon and Elizondo discuss an article written by Mellon published by The Debrief about the deafening silence by the United States Air Force on cooperating with the Pentagon and Congress in relation to UFOs/UAPs. Sometimes theories of critical pedagogy can be quite abstract. What does it look like to front concrete practices in our approaches to this tradition? How do those practices change in the context of community colleges? What can radical community college educators teach us about radical teaching and learning broadly? Our July 2024 episode features three community college educators who co-edited the recent edited collection Humanizing Collectivist Critical Pedagogy: Teaching the Humanities in Community College and Beyond (Peter Lang 2024). This book is a must-read for teachers curious about the practical applications of critical pedagogy for crafting syllabi, building more democratic classroom structures, creating socially engaged classrooms, and fighting for more just and equitable educational systems. Sujung Kim is an interdisciplinary scholar of critical pedagogy of higher education who is currently a research associate with the Futures Initiative and Humanities Alliance at CUNY Graduate Center. What access levels government officials may or may not have, including the US president and why he joined UFOData, as well as the goals they hope to achieve. Chris Mellon's background: Chris graduated from Yale with a Master's Degree in International Relations, he worked for many years for the US Department of Defense as the Deputy Assistant Secretary, Security & Information Operations as well as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Minority Staff Director of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. In recent years, condemnations of racism in America have echoed from the streets to corporate boardrooms. At the same time, politicians and commentators fiercely debate racism's very existence. And so, our conversations about racial inequalities remain muddled. In Metaracism, Brown University Professor of Africana Studies Tricia Rose cuts through the noise with a bracing and invaluable new account of what systemic racism actually is, how it works, and how we can fight back. She reveals how—from housing to education to criminal justice—an array of policies and practices connect and interact to produce an even more devastating “metaracism” far worse than the sum of its parts. While these systemic connections can be difficult to see—and are often portrayed as “color-blind”—again and again they function to disproportionately contain, exploit, and punish Black people. By helping us to comprehend systemic racism's inner workings and destructive impact, Rose shows how to create a more just America for us all. Tricia Rose is Chancellor's Professor of Africana Studies and the director of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America at Brown University. She has received fellowships from the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations, and her research has been funded by the Mellon and Robert Wood Johnson Foundations. She co-hosts with Cornel West the podcast The Tight Rope. She is the author of Longing to Tell: Black Women's Stories of Sexuality and Intimacy, The Hip Hop Wars: What We Talk About When we Talk About Hip Hop—and Why it Matters, Black Noise: Rap Music and Black Culture in Contemporary America, and her new book Metaracism: How Systemic Racism Devastates Black Lives—and How We Break Free. Shermer and Rose discuss: the policies, practices, laws, and beliefs that are racist in 2024 America and what can be done about them • racism, structural racism, systemic racism, metaracism • Rose's working-class background growing up in 1960s Harlem • deep-root cause-ism •being “caught up in the system” • Trayvon Martin, Kelley Williams-Bolar, and Michael Brown • Rose's response to Black conservative authors like Shelby Steele and Thomas Sowell • why she believes Coleman Hughes is wrong about color-blindness • Obama, George Floyd and race relations today • reparations.

On March 8, 2024, the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) released its historical report on UAP, shortly after briefing only a select group of journalists associated with seven mainstream media outlets, none of whom seemingly bothered to fact-check the error-ridden report. "The disappointing lack of critical press coverage of this important report prompted me to begin compiling the insights of UAP scholars and experts who have studied the history of UAP and the US government," wrote former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Christopher Mellon, in a recent lengthy rebuttal in response to the report's release. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we analyze Mellon's response to the AARO report, along with several intriguing revelations it contains, including the purported existence of a secretive UAP sightings program at Area 51 in the 1980s, how the CIA may have once considered whether UAP were extraterrestrial technologies, and much more.
