Currently the Executive Director of WACO Theater Center in Los Angeles, Shay was the Executive Director of 651 ARTS in Brooklyn and the founding VP of Programs for the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, a multi-disciplinary center and museum in downtown Pittsburgh. Prior to that, she served as the managing director of Cornerstone Theater Company, LA Theatreworks, and the St. Louis Black Repertory Company. She also was a founding partner of Marla Gibb's Crossroads Arts Academy and Theatre. Ms. Wafer has engaged in additional community and volunteer activities throughout her career including serving on the Board of Directors of National Performance Network (currently the Board Chair), Theatre Communications Group, and as a New England Foundation for the Arts National Theatre Project and National Dance Project Advisor. So for this week I decided to do this in two parts as the overall thing was around 2 hours. The concept is a bit like the 5 quotes episode we did a little while ago; introduce a quote from a prominent figure in the UFO topic and discuss what is meant by it. Where is the line between direct knowledge and speculation? I've been getting messages asking what I think of various things relating to whats been unfolding, so I bit the bullet on this one and decided to give my thoughts, unfiltered on the recent drama and negativity that have been unfolding in the UFO community. I didn't go into naming names, as I don't want to add to the drama or give any publicity to any of the individuals involved but I thought it was worth addressing. The main point I wanted to put across is, there's no need to burn UFO twitter down, there's no need to engage with individuals who are hell bent on causing drama and chaos. Much better in my humble opinion is to use your energy to raise up those whose approach you resonate with and that it's absolutely healthy and OK to disagree sometimes. Also there was a couple of interesting interviews with Christopher Mellon which I talked about in the last 15 mins of this episode. Vincent Reinhart, chief economist and macro strategist for Dreyfus and Mellon, says there is "no safe place for an investor right now except cash" and inflation-protected securities, due to high inflation and the Federal Reserve's inability to this point to get prices under control. This polemic by the author of 24/7 dismantles the presumption that social media could be an instrument of radical change and contends that the networks and platforms of transnational corporations are intrinsically incompatible with a habitable earth or with the human interdependence needed to build egalitarian post-capitalist forms of life. Dr. Jonathan Crary is the Meyer Schapiro Professor of Modern Art and Theory at Columbia University in the Art history and Archeology Department. He is a prolific art and culture critic and is the co-founder (and co-editor) of Zone Books. Professor Crary has been the recipient of Guggenheim, Getty, Mellon, and National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and has been a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. In 2005, his teaching and mentoring were recognized with a Distinguished Columbia Faculty Award. Dr. Crary is also the author of Techniques of the Observer: On Vision and Modernity in the Nineteenth Century, Suspensions of Perception: Attention, Spectacle and Modern Culture (winner of the 2001 Lionel Trilling Book Award), and 24/7 (a finalist for the 2016 Terzani International Literary Prize). A horrific car accident on Italy's Autostrata in 1989 left newly married Deborah Mellen, whose husband was not injured, with a severe spinal cord injury. Not only did she lose the use of her legs, but many other vital life functions were also impacted as well.
