On this episode of Latinos Out Loud we hear from former LA Dodger Announcers and father-son duo, Jaime and Jorge Jarrín. Aside from calling the shots at Dodger Stadium, they are partnering with Los Defensores to launch the 2025 Scholarships to empower future leaders in law and journalism. DID YOU KNOW: In California, although nearly 39% of the population is Latino, only a small fraction pursue careers in journalism (12%) or law (6%). 44% of first-generation Hispanics were the first in their families to attend college, compared to 22% of whites. Since retiring from his legendary 64-year career as the Los Angeles Dodgers' Spanish voice, Jaime Jarrín has poured his heart into the Jaime and Blanca Jarrín Foundation (JBJF), which he co-founded with his late wife, Blanca, and Los Defensores, JBJF's corporate fiscal partner, which provided the seed money to start the foundation.JBJF uplifts underserved LATINO students in California by awarding scholarships to those pursuing careers in law and journalism, fields that reflect Mr. Jarrín's belief in justice, truth, and storytelling. Believing in Youth, Investing in the Future — The Jaime & Blanca Jarrín Foundation and Los Defensores launched Scholarships to Empower Future Leaders in Law and Journalism With close to $200,000 awarded since 2019, the foundation continues its mission to uplift underserved college students in Southern California The foundation will accept applications from college students pursuing degrees in Law and Journalism. “another thread which I have extricated out of the tangled skein” [HOUN] It has long been accepted that the original title of A Study in Scarlet was meant to be A Tangled Skein. While there is no surviving manuscript of the first Sherlock Holmes story, a single page of notes has long served as Sherlock Holmes's "birth certificate." Welcome to the Part Time Pilot Audio Ground School Podcast! This podcast takes our free podcast to a whole new level by providing students with every single lesson included in the Part Time Pilot Private Pilot & IFR Ground Schools without a single Ad! On top of that, VIP podcast students get BONUS episodes like Mock Checkrides, Checkride Prep, Expert Interviews and more! The #1 reason student pilots never end up becoming a private pilot is NOT due to money. The real reason is actually deeper than that. Yes, flight training is expensive. But every student pilot knows this and budgets for it when they decide to do it. The actual #1 reason a student pilot fails is because they do not have a good, fundamental understanding of the private pilot knowledge they are meant to learn in ground school. You see when a student does not have a good grasp of this knowledge they get to a point in their flight training where their mind just can't keep up. They start making mistakes and having to redo lessons. And THAT is when it starts getting too expensive. This audio ground school is meant for the modern day student pilot... aka the part time student pilot. Let's face it, the majority of us have full time responsibilities on top of flight training. Whether it is a job, kids, family, school, etc. we all keep ourselves busy with the things that are important to us. And with today's economy we have to maintain that job just to pay for the training. The modern day student pilot is busy, on the go and always trying to find time throughout his or her day to stay up on their studies. The audio ground school allows them to consume high quality content while walking, running, working out, sitting in traffic, traveling, or even just a break from the boring FAR/AIM or ground school lecture. Did I meant high quality content? The audio ground school is taken straight out of the 5-star rated Part Time Pilot Online Ground School that has had over 2000 students take and pass their Private Pilot & IFR exams with only 2 total students failing the written. That's a 99.9% success rate! And the 2 that failed? We refunded their cost of ground school and helped them pass on their second attempt. We do this by keeping ground school engaging, fun, light and consumable. We have written lessons, videos, audio lessons, live video lessons, community chats, quizzes, practice tests, flash cards, study guides, eBooks and much more. Part Time Pilot was created to be a breath of fresh air for student pilots. To be that flight training provider that looks out for them and their needs. So that is just what we are doing with this podcast. IFR Section 4 Lesson 18: In this Free IFR Ground School lesson we talk about more helpful weather charts, and in particular significant weather prognostic charts such as surface, low-level and high-level which can give use significant weather event forecasts. I recently spoke with Katie Azevedo of School Habits. Having taught in both public and private school systems, Katie has seen firsthand how our students are expected to learn, but they are rarely given the tools or strategies to do so. Since 2006, she has personally coached thousands of students, one-on-one, on standardized tests (SAT/ACT, SSAT, GRE), application essays, study skills, executive functions, and writing and reading instruction. Katie works with students in grade 6 through graduate school, as well as adults looking to further their work productivity habits. In our conversation, Katie explains what studying IS and what studying IS NOT. She provides ideas to help students improve their study habits and also discusses how studying in college often differs from the study skills that may have worked in high school. Katie also talks about some of the systems that students need in place to support their study habits. And Katie even tells us about the most overlooked skill that students need for success - and that skill may surprise you! How can I help my students not only learn my course material but also retain and transfer that information? This is a question that has plagued and intrigued teachers for centuries. In Smart Teaching Stronger Learning: Practical Tips for 10 Cognitive Scientists, the authors provide their readers with evidence-based practices for immediate classroom implementation. Their premise is that small changes can lead to powerful results. In this approachable book, each chapter is written by a cognitive scientist who is currently teaching. The chapters introduce a concept, describe how to implement the concept in your classroom, and provide multiple resources for further study. The book is consciously formatted to be a quick read (approximately 100 pages) and provides valuable information for anyone who is interested in helping someone else or themselves learn. Teachers, parents, coaches, and lifelong learners will benefit from these strategies. In this episode, Dr. Pooja Agarwal, Dr. Cynthia Nebel, and Dr. Veronica Yan, discuss each of the topics presented in Smart Teaching Stronger Learning: Practical Tips for 10 Cognitive Scientists. Dr. Nebel discusses how learning increases motivation by discussing the Effective Teaching Cycle: Motivation, Scaffolding, and Reinforcement. Dr. Yan discusses the importance of interleaving. Dr. Agarwal provides an overview of the other chapter topics: retrieval practice, early childhood education, metacognition, concept mapping, learning transfer, engagement, and neuromyths. Throughout the episode, Drs. Agarwal, Nebel, and Yan share how these tips have been implemented in their classrooms, and how these same concepts can universally be applied to learning in general. Dr. Pooja Agarwal is the author of the books Powerful Teaching and Smart Teaching Stronger Learning: Practical Tips for 10 Cognitive Scientists. She is editor-in-chief of Retrievalpractice.org and is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.
