Welcome back to another episode of the Tech On Toast podcast, where we dive deep into the world of hospitality tech to uncover how it can simplify your business operations and drive growth. In today's episode, we had the pleasure of hosting two industry experts: Gemma Barter, the Senior Digital Marketing Manager at Honest Burgers Ltd, and Matt Ford, the Business Development Director for Krowd. Key Discussion Points:
Dion O'Reilly chats with Roxi Power about her new book, The Songs that Objects Would Sing, diving deep into a work that that “is aflame, both with the literal wildfires ravaging the American West and with the slower smolder of personal grief. Power's response to loss and disaster is a quirky plangent song…shot through with humor and underpinned by a rippling ostinato of lyric power” (Mark Scroggins). With ease and humor, Dion and Roxi draw on postmodern and Buddhist theories, debating whether the presences that sing within the objects of Power's lines are “essences.” “I feel you in the glint of objects sometimes. That's all I know.” The white "ghost piano" on the book's cover, painted by her sister Sky Power, summons her mother's musical influence within the titular elegiacal poem. Power conjures and “unpaints” the psycho-geography of Texas and Wyoming, filled with the "ghost-scratchings" of memory that, like de Kooning's paintings, peak through to the surface of the “cinematic fictions she sews from scratch." She bends time in poems such as "The Aftermath of Future" where “Now is just one fold in the snake skin of time.” Dion and Roxi discuss Power's trans-genre work and why she has been drawn to recombinant forms since her MFA work at Cornell University that include music, visual art, and film. Power has taught for 25 years at the University of California, Santa Cruz where she founded and edits the trans-genre anthology, Viz. Inter-Arts. Her next book is forthcoming from Carbonation Press in 2024. Power organizes national “Trans-Genre Cabarets,” and her own trans-genre work includes Live Film Narration (Neo-Benshi) performances of original scripts across the country, including the Tennessee Williams Festival, the New Orleans Poetry Festival, REDCAT, and St. Mark's Poetry Project. Her next Neo-Benshi performance is Feb. 22 at Satori in Santa Cruz. Power organizes events and makes podcasts for The Hive Poetry Collective. Her most recent podcast is with Brenda Hillman. Farnaz Fatemi writes: “With both musical and emotional intelligence, not to mention a linguistic virtuosity, Power conjures hope amid her sonic discoveries—while still bearing lucid witness to personal and community grief.” C.S. Giscombe writes, “The first line of Roxi Power's incredible burst of poems lays down the law with one hand and sets things in motion with another—that is, she writes as if to remark on the coming noise made by fire, death, love…The many motions of this music, of these songs that objects would sing, will brush the reader with a difficult and worthy and joy. This episode marks the second time featuring artist and friend Raven Chacon on Broken Boxes. The first time I interviewed Raven was in 2017, when I visited with him at the Institute of American Indian Arts where he was participating in a symposium on Indigenous performance titled, Decolonial Gestures. This time around, we met up with Raven at his home in Albuquerque, NM where recurring host and artist Cannupa Hanska Luger chatted with Raven for this episode. The conversation reflects on the arc of Ravens practice over the past decade, along with the various projects they have been able to work on together, including Sweet Land (2020), an award-winning, multi-perspectival and site-specific opera staged at the State Historical Park in downtown Los Angeles, for which Raven was composer and Cannupa co-director and costume designer. Raven and Cannupa also reflect on their time together traveling up to Oceti Sakowin camp in support of the water protectors during the resistance of the Dakota Access Pipeline. Raven provides context to his composition Storm Pattern, which was a response to being onsite at Standing Rock, and the artists speak to the long term impact of an Indigenous solidarity gathering of that magnitude. Raven speaks about being named the first Native American composer to win the Pulitzer Prize or Voiceless Mass, and shares the composition's intention and performance trajectory. To end the conversation, Raven shares insight around staying grounded while navigating the pressures of success, travel and touring as a practicing artist, and reminds us to find ways to slow down and do what matters to you first, creatively, wherever possible. Raven Chacon is a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, performer, and installation artist from Fort Defiance, Navajo Nation. As a solo artist, Chacon has exhibited, performed, or had works performed at LACMA, The Renaissance Society, San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, REDCAT, Vancouver Art Gallery, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Borealis Festival, SITE Santa Fe, Chaco Canyon, Ende Tymes Festival, and The Kennedy Center. As a member of Postcommodity from 2009 to 2018, he co-created artworks presented at the Whitney Biennial, documenta 14, Carnegie International 57, as well as the two-mile-long land art installation Repellent Fence. A recording artist whose work has spanned twenty-two years, Chacon has appeared on more than eighty releases on various national and international labels. His 2020 Manifest Destiny opera Sweet Land, co-composed with Du Yun, received critical acclaim from the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and The New Yorker, and was named 2021 Opera of the Year by the Music Critics Association of North America. Since 2004, he has mentored over 300 high school Native composers in the writing of new string quartets for the Native American Composer Apprenticeship Project (NACAP). Chacon is the recipient of the United States Artists fellowship in Music, The Creative Capital award in Visual Arts, The Native Arts and Cultures Foundation artist fellowship, the American Academy's Berlin Prize for Music Composition, the Bemis Center's Ree Kaneko Award, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award (2022) and the Pew Fellow-in-Residence (2022). His solo artworks are in the collectIons of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian's American Art Museum and National Museum of the American Indian, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Getty Research Institute, the Albuquerque Museum, University of New Mexico Art Museum, and various private collections. On this episode of the AI For All Podcast, George Matus, Founder and CEO of Teal Drones, joins Ryan Chacon and Neil Sahota to discuss AI drones and AI in warfare. They talk about the history of drones, the current and potential applications of drones, drone swarms, the ethics of AI drones, drone depiction in popular culture, US-China relations, and the future of drones. Always passionate about flight, George Matus had his beginnings in remote control modeling. He became a test pilot for an RC manufacturer at age 12 and after building a number of custom drones in high school, George started Teal in 2015 to create a new era of flight. Since the company's inception eight years ago, George raised several rounds of venture capital funding, launched four products to market with American manufacturing, and continues to serve as CEO of the company after its acquisition by Red Cat Holdings. Teal's current flagship product is designed to "Dominate the Night" and is being deployed at scale across government and commercial segments around the world. George is a Peter Thiel Fellow, Forbes 30 Under 30 member, has competed on the national television show BattleBots, and holds over a dozen granted patents. Teal Drones, Red Cat's largest subsidiary, is focused on rebuilding America's drone industrial base. Ep.166 features Lari Pittman. Over the course of his decades-long career, Lari Pittman (b. 1952, Los Angeles, CA, lives and works in Los Angeles, CA) has developed a unique visual aesthetic that has established him as one of the most significant painters of his generation. Pittman's signature, densely-layered painting style includes a lexicon of signs and symbols (such as bells, eggs, animals, and ropes), a compilation of varied painting techniques, and a clear homage to the handmade, craft, and the decorative. Pittman creates complex compositions that mediate the tension between color, text, and imagery; landscape and decoration; and chaos and order with remarkable dexterity and often on a large scale, and the artist has an innate ability to create compositions in which each element within a painting is given equal space and significance. In the mid-1970s, Pittman attended California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California, completing a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. The Institute's strong feminist arts program challenged the devaluation of art forms traditionally associated with women, and it was partially as a result of his engagement with this program that Pittman developed an interest in undermining aesthetic hierarchies and embracing the decorative arts. Pittman's strong affinity for the decorative can be seen throughout his numerous bodies of work, and it has contributed to his singular visual style. While Pittman's early works were informed by the socio-political struggle resulting from the peak of the AIDS epidemic, racial discord, and LGBTQ+ civil rights struggles that defined the last two decades of the 20th century, his later paintings evince a shift in focus towards interior spaces, including domestic and psychological subjects. Solo exhibitions of his work have been organized at Museo Jumex, Mexico City, Mexico (2022); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA (2019). CHILDHOOD BATTLES: Join me and filmmaker Dianna Ippolito (The Obscured), as we talk Kramer v. Kramer and Marriage Story, two films about divorce and child custody battles. “What law is it that says a woman is a better parent simply by virtue of her sex?” Groucho Marx is said to have said, “Marriage is the chief cause of divorce”…Sounds like it's time for Episode 106 of Pop Art, where we find the pop culture in art and the art in pop culture. It's the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie/foreign side of cinema with a connection to it. For this episode, I am happy to welcome as my guest, writer/director/producer Dianna Ippolito, who has chosen as her film Robert Benton's groundbreaking Kramer vs.Kramer, while I have chosen Noah Baumbach's more contemporary take, Marriage Story, both films about a couple going through a divorce and the custody battle that ensues. And in this episode, we answer such questions as: Who was Laura Dern's character based on? What was the relationship like between Streep and Hoffman on Kramer v. Kramer? What is it about Adam Driver's looks anyway? How did Streep prevent Kramer v. Kramer from becoming misogynistic? What is incorrect when Charlie says he's "taken a residency at UCLA. I'm directing two plays at REDCAT”? Why did Meryl Streep wear a raincoat in the final scenes of Kramer v. Kramer? Whose marriage did Noah Baumbach base Marriage Story on? What is incorrect about the legal proceedings in Kramer v. Kramer? And what is it about these sorts of movies anyway? Check out Dianna's IMDB page at https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2074778/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_0_nm_5_q_dianna%2520ippolito Check out my blog at https://howardcasner.wordpress.com/ My books, More Rantings and Ravings of a Screenplay Reader, The Starving Artists and Other Stories and The Five Corporations and One True Religion can be found at https://www.amazon.com/s?k=howard+casner&ref=nb_sb_noss Be sure to like, follow or comment on my podcast. You may recognize Rebecca from her appearance on Top Chef: Just Desserts or the standout mention in Southern Living where her Houston-based, sweet tooth haven of a storefront, Fluff Bake Bar, was named one of the “South's Best Bakeries.” The Wyoming native made her first “go big or go home” play back in 1999 when she secured a spot at the famed Le Cordon Bleu school in Paris, and soon after, a coveted internship at the landmark Le Bristol hotel. There, under the tutelage of Pastry Chef Gilles Marchal, she got a taste of Michelin-starred kitchens. After graduating, she worked her way through many famed New York City kitchens, eventually becoming head pastry chef at The Red Cat with Executive Chef Jimmy Bradley. After years of work in the Big Apple, Rebecca pivoted to Texas just as Houston's culinary scene was starting to heat up. Masson accepted an invitation from Executive Chef Ryan Pera, now chef-owner of Coltivare and Revival Market, to oversee pastry for *17 Restaurant and the Sam Houston Hotel. She quickly generated a cult following in the 713, earning a nickname as the city's “Sugar Fairy”. My Table Magazine designated her Best Pastry Chef, the first of many local honors, which led to positions with Houston-based and nationally noted chefs and restaurateurs ranging from Charles Clark to Chris Shepherd, as well as a role with HEB Central Market, before stepping out on her own with Fluff Bake Bar in 2011. Masson moved Fluff to its current, larger location in the Heights neighborhood in 2020 and her pastries and confections have received notable coverage in Food & Wine, Bon Appetit, Texas Monthly, Houston Chronicle, Culture Map, Saveur and TimeOut, among many others. In this episode we discuss: How Rebecca got hooked on pastry Her experience attending Le Cordon Bleu Staging at Le Bristol in Paris Working for Daniel Boulud in NYC Opening Fluff Bake Bar, using a commissary kitchen Launching the brick-and-mortar Fluff Bake Bar Rebecca's top kitchen tips and advice for future pastry chefs And much more! Episode Sponsored by Guittard Chocolate Company We know the level of expertise required to succeed in pastry. At Guittard, our family has been perfecting our craft for five generations. What do winemaking and cooking have in common? More than you might think! Just as a professional or at-home chef is always looking for the right ingredient to enhance a dish, winemakers are also always considering how they can make a wine exemplify the best of what the harvest offers! However, winemakers can't exactly scour a spice rack to add flavors to their wines, so how do they adjust a wine's flavor profile? Thankfully winemakers can turn to a special tool that's been honed since the earliest days of winemaking—blending wines! Hazlitt's vinifera winemaker Michael Reidy shares his extensive knowledge and experiences related to blending wines, and some tips for finding a blend that fits your palate. Listeners will also get a special "taste" of Hazlitt's newest premium blend, Homestead Reserve Prestige!

Kevin Patricio is the co-founder and CEO of Basqueland Brewing. Kevin emigrated from the United States to Spain in 2011 with his family and now resides in San Sebastian in the Basque Country. Kevin's professional career started in New York City at Food & Wine Magazine in 1998. After six years at the magazine he left to pursue a career in the kitchen. He continued to consult for media and spirit companies until the kitchen took him completely. He trained in NYC classics like The Red Cat, Blue Hill, as well as Arzak in San Sebastian. It wasn't until he was running a kitchen in San Sebastian in 2011 that craft beer came knocking. “In the USA, I took the availability of craft beer for granted. Almost everywhere you go, you're never far from good beer. That all changed when I got to the Basque Country in 2011. The craft beer culture was pre-embryonic. I really wanted to complete the experience for customers in and out of the restaurant which in this case meant having quality, local beer.” He opened Basqueland Brewery in 2015. The brewery is one of the largest independent breweries in Spain and has been named Best Brewery Spain four times in five years (2017, 2019, 2021, 2022) by the Concurso Nacional de Cerveceros, Fira Poblenou; as well as Best Brewery two years in a row (2021-2022) in the international competition, Barcelona Beer Challenge. It can be said that Basqueland is best known for their IPAs, from West Coast to DDH and session to DIPA. The team takes great care with all styles from its crisp, clean Santa Clara Helles Lager to massive pastry stouts and zingy sours. “We strive to make the best beer we can in whatever style.” Basqueland has recently opened Basqueland Izakaia in San Sebastian–a small tavern with Asian bar food and organic wine. It has become a beacon for Asian food in San Sebastian. Kevin hosts guest-chef pop-ups which have included Andy Ricker of Pok Pok and wine guest Nico Boise, the sommelier from Restaurante Elkano. On this episode, Patrick joins host Mitchell Davis and discusses how as an American he's making a splash on Spain's craft beer scene, the culinary treasures of the Basque country, and why the five French mother sauces are “a little dusty and on the shelf”. In this episode of High Theory, Leigh Claire La Berge talks about red cats: communist cats, revolutionary tigers, radical felines of all stripes. The red cat is a provocation, and an invitation to think differently about economic history. Leigh Claire continues our spooky theory of cat concepts for Halloween 2022. Her book Marx for Cats: A Radical Bestiary will be published by Duke University Press this coming summer. It takes seriously the premise that you can tell the history of capitalism through the figure of the cat. As a bestiary, it has a hundred pictures of cats, from a vast archive that spans the ninth century to the present. It began as a series of filmed conversations with cats on Marxist theory. You can watch them at marxforcats.com In the episode she references The Social Contract by Jean Jacques Rousseau. Each of the two cover images from the initial publication depict cats. One of them forms the cover image for this episode. In the longer conversation, she referenced Kate Evans's Red Rosa: A Graphic Biography of Rosa Luxemburg (Verso 2015) and Drew Pendergrass and Troy Vettese's Half-Earth Socialism: A Plan to Save the Future from Extinction, Climate Change and Pandemics (Verso, 2022). Leigh Claire La Berge is an Associate Professor of English at BMCC CUNY, where she studies the intersection of contemporary cultural production and economic forms. Her prior books include Scandals and Abstraction: Financial Fiction of the Long 1980s (Oxford, 2014) and Wages Against Artwork: Decommodified Labor and the Claims of Socially Engaged Art (Duke, 2019).
