This material and theoretical history of seriality shows it to be the dominant form of culture since its inception within 19th-century print culture, as both a media structure and a psychic one.The serial is everywhere. Commonly identified by the segmented release structure of an ongoing narrative—from installments of Victorian novels to TV episodes to comic books—seriality names the spread of installment-based storytelling across a range of media. However, Ryan Engley argues that seriality is not only a narrative structure but also a psychic structure. That is where this Salon starts, and it is the most specific version of the psilocybin and menopause conversation I have heard in public.Kelly McGinty, a nurse practitioner, told a full room at Town Hall Seattle that the drop women feel in perimenopause is physiological rather than imagined. I asked whether that means psilocybin replaces estrogen. She said no, and that she would like more research. Her co-author, Dr. Trish Singh, added that research on menopausal women barely exists at any phase of the transition.Two clinicians describe what they see in their patients, then draw a line at the point where the evidence ends. Most people selling a reframe of midlife will not draw that line on a microphone.What sits on the other side of it: anxiety as a knock on the door rather than a malfunction, why women microdose intuitively instead of on a protocol, and the archetypes we inherit about aging women. Cindy Weinstein was just twenty-five when her father, Jerry, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease in his mid-fifties. Decades later, she returned to those memories in Finding the Right Words: A Story of Literature, Grief, and the Brain, written with renowned neurologist Dr. Bruce Miller. Cindy is the Eli and Edythe Broad Professor of English at the California Institute of Technology and an Atlantic Fellow for Equity in Brain Health. This is the final episode of our 2025-26 series on ‘mechanisms in reproductive biology'. Over the course of twelve fascinating conversations, I've spoken with researchers fom various disciplines who study sperm, eggs, or embryos through the lenses of molecular biology, evolution, and physics. My goal was to learn from researchers who study the same systems, but approach the problem from completely different starting assumptions about how biology works in the first place. Additionally, I had an opportunity in the last three episodes of the season to pause a bit, and think deeply about what the concept of mechanism means, and how our common preconceptions have historically influenced the practice of biological science. Rob's research focuses on understanding an impressive range of biological phenomena from molecules to ecosystems. Some of his recent work, which we'll discuss in this episode, is focused on understanding how seemingly distinct biological processes such as translation of proteins on the ribosome or the foraging behavior of ant colonies actually have something in common- they tend to achieve consistent outcomes while also being relatively insensitive to their starting configurations- behavior which, I might add, is difficult or impossible to predict from molecular mechanistic descriptions alone.  Rob's many wonderful books, such as ‘Cell Biology by the Numbers, and Physical Biology of the Cell, had a huge influence on me during my formative years as a biologist. In nature, enzymes are the catalysts that make much of biology work. They jumpstart chemical reactions that either wouldn't happen, or would happen super slowly. They break down food, build other molecules, extract energy, and more. What if we could harness evolution to engineer designer enzymes that do other specific jobs that benefit us?  Putting that idea into practice changed the game for chemistry, and earned Frances Arnold the Nobel Prize prize in 2018. She called it “directed evolution.” Today, thousands of labs use her methods to coax enzymes into doing things no one ever thought of.
