On the first episode of Sick Sad Monsters, Erin and Wren explore the theme of grief and trauma in the films The Final Girls (2015) and Spontaneous (2020). They discuss the relationships, characters, stylization, and soundtrack and how these horror comedies explore the heavy topic of grief.
If you love, self-mocking films like Tucker & Dale, then this is something that you will love. It's a love letter to cheesy horror films from the 1980's with an interesting twist. It's harp, wickedly funny, and pays homage to the slasher films. Max Cartwright waits while her actress mother, Amanda, auditions for a film. When she returns, Amanda complains that she'll only be known as scream queen Nancy in the 1986 slasher film Camp Bloodbath, a cult classic. On the way home, the two get into a car accident and Amanda is killed. Three years later, on the anniversary of her mother's death, Max is studying with her friends Gertie and Chris. Gertie's stepbrother Duncan, a horror film fanatic, shows up and persuades Max to attend a special double-feature showing of Camp Bloodbath and its sequel. At the screening, Max is not too thrilled that Chris' possessive ex-girlfriend – and her former best friend – Vicki is there as well. During the film, the theater is accidentally set ablaze. In order to get the group to safety, Max uses a machete to cut a hole in the screen and they all step through. This episode I look at the 2015 cult film The Final Girls. This film takes a group of friends and puts them in one of the best 80s slasher flicks of all time. No, not Friday the 13th, but Camp Bloodbath. Chased by Billy and in a world where the other people don't know they're characters in a movie, will Max, Chris, Vicki, Duncan and Gertie make it out alive? Or will they need the help of a final girl to get out? Take a listen to a new episode of the Terrible Terror podcast to hear my take on this interesting mix of a film.

This Week in Film, join Nick in welcoming two new friends to the show: Dan & Lew! This Week they discuss: The Final Girls, Dark Star: H.R. Giger's World, and Dead Poets Society. First up this week, Nick goes to 1980's camp with The Final Girls. Next up, Dan checks out the weirdo world of Dark Star: H.R. Giger's World, and then creates the following classic quote about what must be a smelly H.R. Giger: "A bathtub full of books, is never full of you." Brilliant Dan, just brilliant. Then Lew stands on his desk this week, with Dead Poets Society. We answer last weeks RaysRayndomRayquest. Then an exciting development as this week we have not one, but two different questions! First up, Dan's Dynamic Demand asks: What is a movie you always confuse with another movie? Then answer Lew's Lighthearted Lesson Lestion: What movie was made in your hometown?
