Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 43 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by Nicole Ackman to discuss the next film in their Sofia Coppola series, The Bling Ring (2013). Following her most subtle work to date, Sofia Coppola took a full swing the other way in tackling a larger than life, true story that is all about how we consume celebrity culture and consumerism. The Bling Ring follows a group of young, fame-obsessed teenagers in the late 2000s, that use the internet to track where their favorite movie and reality stars are so they can rob their homes while the stars are away. Led by Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, and a mostly unknown cast, Coppola examines the newest generations obsessions with the figures and institutions that she grew up around, how this mindset has gotten worse since the actions seen in the film, and how it all seems inconsequential in the grand scheme of things once all the dust settles on the robbers. Ryan, Jay, and Nicole break down their impressions on the film, if Coppola was the right choice to tackle this modern subject matter, Watson's career path (a lively, respectful argument between Ryan and Jay), the minimalist approach to the screenplay, the sharp contrast in the cinematography between the day and night sequences, what is the best sandwich they've ever had, and is this the best social film commentary released in 2013. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h01m. The guys will be back next week to begin their new series covering the films of Sofia Coppola with a review of her next film, The Beguiled. You can stream the film on Netflix, as well as rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. We're back! The Worst of 2023 begins with the sequel to the hit Conjuring-verse horror flick - The Nun II. Is this one of the more unnecessary sequels in recent memory? How much preparation work was require for Valek's magazine stand scare? How should this movie connect to the Sister Act-iverse? Just how convoluted IS this universe? What is going on with Taissa Farmiga's hair... and why is it perfect? All this and the 2nd scariest nun to have ever lived in this week's episode! Next week: it'll be super! Christian joins Caitlin to cover The Nun, the biggest box office success from the CCU (Conjuring Cinematic Universe). We talk about nuns (and nunneries), snakes, religion (and religious trauma), spitting, and the Marvelization of the later Conjuring movies. We give this underrated movie some love, and we talk about how the literal blood of Jesus Christ isn't that far off when it comes to relic/reliquary madness. Tangents include: hot Patrick Wilson, Titanic, our artistic pal Milissa, Breaking Dawn, Hogwarts houses, the Holy Foreskin, Disney characters, first cell phones, seasonal food items, driving with the gas light on, "so bad they're good" horror movies, crypitds, drinks, and fantasy theater experiences. This week on Mummy Dearest , we unwrap the season 2 finale of the greatest show of all time: The Gilded Age. The finale was a perfect bow on top of a beautiful gift of a season. It had everything we've come to love and expect from The Gilded Age: Duke drama, fake friendships, Nathan Lane's southern accent, crossing the street, and Agnes being angry. What we didn't expect was a caked up George Russell sauntering around his office with skin tight clothes. Nor did we expect where the Duke ended up on the opening night of the Met and the Academy! It was a riveting finale and we unpack it all on this week's episode of Mummy Dearest!Support the showFollow the podcast on Instagram!Follow Sloane on Instagram!Follow Zach on Instagram! And most importantly, become a Patron and unlock hundreds of bonus episodes!
This week we're unwrapping the penultimate episode of season 2 of "The Gilded Age". Our time has almost come to an end and we are as upset as a Duke eating a potentially spicy soup. This week gave us all the things we've come to love about "The Gilded Age": back cancer, floral arrangements, luncheon, 5 minutes of CGI fireworks, Bertha and George in their bedroom, scams, and another sister hug between Agnes and Ada. There are so many things unfolding with only one episode left! Will Marian marry cousin Douche-elle? Will Agnes leave the house? Will Maud Beaton be brought to justice? Will Bertha wear a gorgeous dress to the opening of the MET? I think we're safe to bet all the Van Rhijn money on that one. This week on Mummy Dearest Podcast we unwrap Season 2 Episode 6 of "The Gilded Age!" Literally this was one of the best episodes of TV to grace our televisions in a long time. We were laughing. We were crying. We were learning about patents in 1877! There are twists, there are turns and sadly there are backaches that aren't just backahes! Aunt Agnes leaves her house TWICE in one episode AND George Russell shows us his soft side. He is the hottest robber baron HBO has ever seen and if we don't get a season 3 we must strike! Micha
This week on Mummy Dearest Podcast we unwrap Season 2 Episode 5 of "The Gilded Age"! This week had it all: high stakes soup drama, Aunt Agnes leaving her house MULTIPLE times, an almost ruined dinner party, and the merest hint of sex between a married couple! There was of course other real drama like two characters being hunted but don't worry, they're ok! Our pantaloons were in a bunch with all the excitement from this week! Double soup hijinks in one episode? Calm down Julian Fellowes, our hearts can only take so much stress! All that and so much more on this week's "The Gilded Age" recap on Mummy Dearest Podcast! A priest with a haunted past and a novice on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun. Director Corin Hardy Writers Gary Dauberman, James Wan Stars Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet
What better time than now to talk about this film then a week out from the release of its sequel. We travel to Romania to explore the origins of Valak, or better know as THE NUN. Does this character have the same effect in this movie as she did in THE CONJURING 2, or does it fall flat and play into the typical prequel trap? We try to answer those questions and more. A up and coming nun, a priest and a farm hand try to uncover the mystery behind a death at a convent where paranormal or even demonic events may be at play. Taissa Farmiga joins her sister in the CONJURING UNIVERSE as she faces off against the titular nun and tries to send her back to hell.
