The first week of December isn't just for cozy rom-coms and twinkling lights. On this episode of This Week in Horror History, we dig into the spooky side of December 1–7, charting travel nightmares, cursed deserts, classic Universal monsters, and a knife-clawed college mascot turning school spirit into a bloodbath. We kick things off with Turistas (2006), the mid-2000s travel horror where a dream backpacking trip in Brazil plunges into organ-harvesting terror. It's that “don't get on the bus” era of horror, loaded with sweaty paranoia and the ugly underside of “exotic” tourism. From there, we head to the desert with Scalps (1983), a shoestring-budget curse shocker about archaeology students who dig on sacred land and unleash a vengeful spirit. It slipped quietly into limited December release but later clawed out a cult following on home video and streaming thanks to its gritty, regional DIY vibe. Then we turn back the clock to House of Dracula (1945), one of Universal's last serious monster mash-ups. Dracula, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein's monster all converge on a tormented doctor who thinks he can “cure” them — and instead gives us a fog-drenched fever dream of capes, neck bolts, and mad science that feels tailor-made for chilly December nights. Our Deep Cut Spotlight goes to Girls Nite Out (1982), a campus slasher originally released as The Scaremaker. A college basketball win kicks off an all-night scavenger hunt, while a killer in the school's bear mascot costume stalks the grounds with steak knives strapped to its paws. It's pure early-'80s slasher energy — dorm drama, campus radio, locker-room stalking — that barely made a ripple in theaters but was rescued by VHS and, eventually, a boutique Blu-ray restoration. We also roll through a Birthday Roll for horror heavy hitters born this week — from Sean S. Cunningham and Tony Todd to genre-shaping talents behind slashers, supernatural sequels, and expressionist nightmares — and talk about how their work threads through the films we're spotlighting. To wrap it all up, we land on a Weekly Recommendation that fits perfectly with early December: Edward Scissorhands (1990). It's the ultimate snowy, suburban gothic fairy tale — pastel houses, winter loneliness, and a gentle “monster” whose ice-carved sculptures make the snow fall — ideal for horror fans easing into holiday mode without losing that eerie edge. This episode of This Week in Horror History is brought to you in part by Savorista — the spooky-friendly coffee brand serving bold, gourmet flavors in decaf and half-caf roasts so you can binge horror without wrecking your sleep. Head to Savorista.com, pick out your favorite light, medium, or dark roast, and use promo code SPOOKY at checkout to get 25% off your first order. Every purchase supports the show directly and keeps the horror history rolling. If you love horror podcasts, physical media, and deep-cut genre history, queue this one up and let This Week in Horror History program your first December horror marathon.
From an ill-fated cruise ship, to the streets and sewers of NYC, Jensen Daggett battled Jason Voorhees across many different settings as Rennie in “Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan.” Tune in to hear all about filming everywhere from in the water to actual Times Square, the sequence with Jason that truly scared her, and how it feels being one of the final girls in this beloved franchise.
Torso - “They Were Only Dolls” Happy Giallo Days! We are celebrating with an OG Slasher - TORSO (1973). A group of girls try to escape to the countryside as a killer is on the loose in their city. Their villa on the top of a treacherous hill could prove to be their downfall…We hope you enjoy getting all tied up with us in this fresh episode!Support the show
After Winnie, puts an end to a killer in her town, life is meaningless. When she wishes she wasn't born under the aurora, she's transported to a parallel universe where life is going on without her and it's not promising. It's a Wonderful Knife is a Christmas horror slasher that is a parody of It's a Wonderful Life and pays homage with its own spin on the story. The film features the always amazing, Justin Long, as a greedy mayor who plots to take over the town of Angel Falls, and he is always fun to watch. While this film explores familiar themes we've seen before, it appears to struggle with plot. In any case, if you don't come for the story, you'll enjoy the laughs and the gore as the kill scenes are crazy. We discuss familial intricacies and Three Stooges-esque pie fight gags in this episode centered around a mother from hell in a film that feels like it was written in hell, 1989's Murder In Law, a From Hell/Slasher hybrid that sees Joe Estevez get a visit from his long, terminally lost mother, who immediately takes a disliking to his family. We discuss the film's strange - many, many strange - narrative choices, Joe Estevez' mid-film disappearing act, we wait on breaking news from Bluesky as it relates to one cast member while also discussing this character in depth, and much, much more!

This Black Friday, Cutting Deep into Horror takes you back to where modern terror truly began: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). Hosts Henrique Couto & Rachael Redolfi break down Tobe Hooper's legendary shocker — a film that reshaped horror with its brutal realism, suffocating Texas heat, and one of cinema's most terrifying families.Perfect for the Thanksgiving weekend, this episode explores how the movie's themes of family dysfunction, meat, ritual, survival, and rural dread hit especially hard during a holiday built around gathering and feasting. Henrique and Rachael examine the film's relentless pacing, groundbreaking sound design, and the cultural fears it tapped into — from urban-vs-rural anxiety to the collapse of safety in everyday America. They also dive into the chaotic production history, the cast's nightmare experiences, the infamous mob-linked distributor, and how Leatherface's legacy became an unexpected symbol of American horror. Whether you're recovering from turkey dinner or Black Friday chaos, this is the perfect way to lean deeper into seasonal fear.Inside this episodeThe Road Trip to Hell — How a simple drive and a cemetery visit turn into a descent toward madness. The Hitchhiker's Warning — Chaos arrives early, reshaping the tone and danger instantly. The House of Horrors — Bone art, slaughter rooms, and why the décor hits the deepest nerves.Sally Hardesty's Ordeal — A masterclass in survival horror, trauma, and sensory overload.Dinner With the Family — A disturbing, iconic sequence that redefined psychological horror.Production Hell — Sweat, heat, real injuries, and the grueling on-set reality behind the film's authenticity. Why TCM Still Terrifies — Minimalist brutality, stark realism, and cultural impact that still resonates.Thanksgiving & Horror — Why TCM unexpectedly fits the season of big meals and bigger family tension.Where to Watch The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (U.S.):Netflix – subscription

Send us a textHappy Thanksgiving, Fearless Fans! The main course this year is a cheap slasher with at least three different names and just as many versions. We present 1987's Blood Rage (aka Nightmare at Shadow Woods, aka Complex, aka Slasher)!!Pete takes us through this wild tale of an evil twin brother that frames his sibling for murder, then years later goes on an insane murder spree when his brother escapes to confront him on Thanksgiving night. All the while their troubled mother slides further and further into madness. The version we watched was the edited-for-TV cut, which is so dismantled it can barely be considered an actual narrative. Which just adds to the fun!Join us as we discuss inappropriate times for sex, polyamorous friend groups, and what is or isn't cranberry sauce. And as always: don't get too scared!
The Friday the 13th movie series is one of the top slasher movie franchises of the 1980s and beyond, so this week the Junkies take a look at Jason Voorhees, the unkillable movie monster with the staggeringly high body count who has been to camp, to hell, to outer space and has battled Freddy Krueger. The Junkies look at all 12 (not 13?) movies in the series so far, compare Jason to the other unstoppable slashers who made it big in the 1980s, Halloween's Michael Myers and Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy, and figure out which of the three they could fend off if they ever found themselves having to choose one. Then the Junkies look to the future with Jason, and the newly-formed Jason Universe that could bring us that elusive 13th movie in the series - and more. Unexpected narration! Scientific stick poking! A very sweaty cast that includes a fearless Mathilda May, a naturally voyeuristic Peter Firth, and a pre-Star Trek Patrick Stewart! A thrillingly weird movie with incredible practical effects from the legendary John Dykstra, and a script from Alien's Dan O'Bannon, this intensely-British movie is simply too strange to be forgotten! In addition, Chrissy shares her spoiler-free thoughts on Heart Eyes and Weapons, Alex does the same for A House of Dynamite and 1995's Species, and Tim says he enjoyed watching the majority of The Phoenician Scheme! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Plug in your guitars and sharpen your sickles. Cabin of Horrors is taking you on a deep dive into two slashers that prove horror can be weird, loud, and totally unforgettable.First, we crank up the volume with Slumber Party Massacre II (1987). The surreal, rock 'n' roll sequel that traded realism for dream logic and a killer with a power-drill guitar. We'll unravel how writer-director Deborah Brock turned a feminist satire into a neon-soaked nightmare filled with glitter, gore, and the blurred lines between trauma and fantasy. Expect behind-the-scenes chaos, production secrets, and the film's bizarre but lasting influence on horror's stranger side. Then we head deep into the Midwest for a modern bloodbath: Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare. A slasher novel that revitalized the subgenre for a new generation. We'll explore how Cesare channels the energy of '80s slashers into sharp social commentary, small-town paranoia, and one terrifying mascot with a killer sense of justice. This is slasher fiction done right. Brutal, smart, and packed with heart-pounding payoffs.

What if the slasher wasn't just a monster in a mask… but a person you couldn't help but feel sorry for?In this episode, Jim dives into Stephen Graham Jones' newest horror novel, I Was a Teenage Slasher — a brilliant, blood-soaked story that somehow makes the killer the one you sympathize with. From the author of The Indian Lake Trilogy, this book flips every slasher trope on its head. It's raw, emotional, and hauntingly human — horror with heart, written by a master of the genre.Jim breaks down what makes this story such a fascinating companion piece to My Heart is a Chainsaw, why it stands out among Jones's recent masterpieces, and who will especially love this one.
Dave and Christian talk some recent horror news and releases as well as their latest slasher watches.Hope you enjoy.
Send us a Question!MOVIE DISCUSSION: Kathryn joins Melvin to discuss Scott Derrickson's latest horror feature, Black Phone 2! The two get into what sets it apart from other franchises like A Nightmare on Elm Street, how it holds up against the first film, and how it's... more Christian? Oh snap! Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 23-minutes discussing Sigourney Weaver saying at NYCC 2025 that there's a "very strong first 50 pages" script of Alien that includes Ripley, and where she is at the time, and the two wonder both earnestly and cynically about the idea of a Ripley-included Alien sequel in the 2020s (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) First things first... is it A Nightmare on Elm Street meets Friday the 13th?Exploring the pervasive online joke that The Grabber, as a new "slasher icon", is an industry plant, and why it may feel that way.The dialogue here is bad. Full stop. The drama works if you buy into it, but the bad dialogue is a heavy cost.Kathryn and Melvin both had this fear: is Scott Derrickson just gonna do Sinister again? Thankfully, the answer is more nuanced than that. The spirituality isn't Deistic and the way Gwen prays and interacts with Jesus is as though Jesus is an active, non-corporeal character in the film.Talking Terrence, The Grabber, and Finn. There's no doubt in Melvin's mind that Scott Derrickson is evoking real-life Protestant Camp abuse tales with the drama and setting in Black Phone 2, including Kanakuk Kamp, LifeWay Camp, and Matt Chandler's church.Kathryn, "Knowing the truth, believing the truth, and speaking the truth can be really scary."Recommendations:In the Mouth of Madness (1995) (Movie)Caveat (2021) (Movie)Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! All shock collars set to high voltage as we zip through a maze of bloodthirsty killers, Japanese gameshow cliches, and perhaps way too much linguistic back and forth with Maurice Devereaux' low-budget 2001 slasher, $LA$HER$. We're joined by listener and friend of the show, Jake Rubenstein, to discuss the film's ambitious nature (despite its budgetary constraints), director Maurice Devereaux' short-lived filmography, and much, much more!

Time for another Halloween week Nightmare Fuel! This one is from this past May. And in it, we head to Upstate New York's Woodhull Mountain, where Gabe and Hassan see a very strangely placed house on the side of the hill while out on a hike. When Gabe enters the house, he leaves behind our world, and enters a space outside of it - a dark and mysterious space dedicated mostly... to pain. Hope you like it!This episode was scored by Logan Keith. We recommend listening with headphones to experience the full effect of all the creepy background noises. If you like this episode, please let us know wherever you rate and review podcasts. Welcome back to Geekz 31 Days of Horror! Tonight, we're dusting off a hidden VHS-era gem — the 1991 indie slasher HauntedWeen — a movie that delivers Halloween mayhem, over-the-top kills, and pure 90s camp fun! When a tragic accident shuts down a haunted attraction, years later a college fraternity decides to reopen the old haunt for a charity event… only to discover that something evil never left. What starts as a night of partying and pranks turns into a blood-soaked horror show as a masked killer takes "hands-on" scaring to the next level.
Like a typical reaction to Erik's joke of the week, you have the right to remain silent - forever - with Bill Lustig's 1988 officer of the law action-slasher, Maniac Cop. We're joined by listener, Austin Stenberg, to discuss this offbeat tale of a police officer gone rogue for murder.
In this episode of We Seen't It, the crew dives right into Josh's review of Jared Leto's latest flick, Tron 3 — and surprisingly, he's all in on it. Kevin follows up with his take on One Battle After Another, breaking down the chaos and cinematic moments that make it worth a watch. Then it's back to the madness with Scarefest 2025: Week 2, where the horror matchups get bloody: 1️⃣ Bram Stoker's Dracula vs. Sinners 2️⃣ Weapons vs. Trick 'r Treat 3️⃣ The Heretic (No Soliciting) vs. Totally Killer (80's Slasher) 4️⃣ Together vs. Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2
