The explanation for why we talked about a movie outside our normal range is explained within the podcast. It's also unusual because it's about the comedy business and we had four comedians in the room so the conversation drifted into what it's like to be a stand-up comedian, what the movie gets right and if the relationships seem genuine. Manolis Zontanos, Patrick Coppolino, Kristian Reimer and Jimmy England together bring over fifty years of experience to the discussion. Absolutely fascinating.

We eat some grocery store deli food and discuss the movie Funny People (2009) this week. Is it nostalgic brilliance or a half-acted mess? We'll let you decide. One thing we can agree on is that the love story part of the film drags on way too long. With too many comedian cameos to count, this film may be an ode to the past that Judd Apatow thinks is funny more than the audience does.

Is self-help real or nonsense? Jason and Peter have always been skeptical of the ability for self-help books and seminars to impact and improve a person's life…they even delved into the comedic aspects of the self-help world with their 2001 ABC sitcom “Bob Patterson.” So, when they discovered that Judd Apatow…uber successful screenwriter, producer, noted comedian, author and director of a myriad of cultural-defining comedies such as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, This is 40, Funny People, Trainwreck and The King of Staten Island was a bit obsessed with the self-help genre… they needed to find out why! They discuss Judd's journey to self-help, his unique Ayahuasca experience, and why he writes his comedies as dramas! Really,no Really!!! *** IN THIS EPISODE: Is self-help real or nonsense? How Judd's parent's constant fighting enabled him to become a good producer & comedian. That one-time Judd took the hallucinogen Ayahuasca in exotic Studio City, CA… His comedic choices have become more geriatric as he's grown older. Was he afraid of being cancelled when returning to stand-up? The time high-school aged Judd asked Seinfeld to do a SECOND interview! Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Bryan Batt, Award-Winning Actor, Co-Star, “Mad Men” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Bryan Batt, is an award-winning actor, author and businessman who is perhaps best known for his portrayal of the closeted art director Sal Romano on the mega hit TV series, “Mad Men”, for which he won 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards along with his fellow castmates for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. But he's done much, much more than that. On Broadway, he's appeared in many shows including “Cats”, “Starlight Express”, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Sunset Boulevard”, “Saturday Night Fever”, “Seussical”, “The Scarlet Pimpernel” and “La Cage Aux Folles”. On the big screen, you've seen him in “Jeffrey”, “Funny People”, “Brawler”, “B-Side”, “12 Years a Slave”, “Parkland”, “The Runner”, “LBJ”, “American Reject”, “High Tide”, “Easy Does It”, and many more movies. He also starred in the highly acclaimed short film, “The Palooka”, for which he earned 2 Best Actor Award nominations from the Massachusetts Independent Film Festival. And on TV, besides his memorable performance in “Mad Men”, he's appeared in dozens of shows including “Ghost Whisperer”, “Ugly Betty”, “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”, “NCIS”, “Scream: The TV Series”, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”, “East Siders” and many more. He's also written 3 bestselling books: a fascinating memoir entitled “She Ain't Heavy, She's My Mother”, “Big, Easy Style: Creating Rooms You Love to Live In”, which is a beautiful book about interior design and home décor, and “Pontchartrain Beach: A Family Affair”, about the famous New Orleans amusement park founded by his grandfather. And if all of that weren't enough, our guest and his husband Tom are the owners of an extremely popular home furnishings and gift shop in New Orleans, called “Hazelnut”. Our guest is passionate in his support of charities and civic organizations in New York City and New Orleans, especially his more than 30-year relationship with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. He's a recipient of the Isidore Newman Distinguished Alumnus Award, and on April the 13th, he will be the honoree at the New Orleans Film Society Gala. Judd Apatow is known for making long movies, from comedies like ‘Funny People' or ‘This Is 40' that balloon past two hours to documentaries on his comedy heroes like the two-part, four-hour films about Garry Shandling and George Carlin. So it was somewhat of a shock when he dropped a 20-minute short last month about the lifelong friendship between Don Rickles and Bob Newhart. “I've changed,” he jokes. “All my movies are going to be shorts now, no matter the genre.” In this bonus episode—his third appearance on the show—Apatow breaks down what made those two stylistically opposed icons a perfect off-stage pair. He also weighs in on how the art of roasting has evolved over the years, shares memories about his friend and mentor Norman Lear and explains why he thinks Lena Dunham's ‘Girls' is finally being fully appreciated more than a decade after its premiere. Judd Apatow needs little in the way of introduction. He's a filmmaker synonymous with an entire era of American comedy – that mid-'00s explosion of zeitgeist-grabbing movies about incapable men, grappling with the realisation that it's about time they grew up. There's The 40-Year-Old Virgin, which Apatow wrote and directed. There's also the cult classic music biopic satire Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, which he co-wrote with Jake Kasdan. The Cable Guy, Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Step Brothers, meanwhile, are just some of the projects he's served on as a producer.A remarkable run of movies since the beginning of the 2010s have seen his comic signature evolve into something more tender. Films like Funny People, This Is 40 and The King of Staten Island are all funny, sure – but there's an introspection to his work nowadays that has been fascinating to behold. On this week's episode, Judd revisits one of his best-loved movies: 2007's Knocked Up. But it's not his first draft we delve into. Instead, as a window into his creative process, we uncover emails that the filmmaker sent to himself in the run-up to writing the movie, full of lengthy streams of consciousness about what the comedy could be – and why a stoner played by Seth Rogen having a baby with a high-flying media personality played with poise by Katherine Heigl would be hilarious. This week, we're joined by two comedians to talk about their connection to food. First, Ivy Le, host of the podcast Fear of Going Outside. We quote, "Most nature shows are hosted by reckless white men, but avid indoors woman Ivy Le is an Asian mom with severe allergies. Last season, Ivy conquered camping. She's back, braving the outdoors to go hunting- or die trying!" Then, comedian Dan Ahdoot, the author of the new book Undercooked: How I Let Food Become My Life Navigator and How Maybe That's a Dumb Way to Live, talks to us about his connection to food and his family, his theories on relationships, and the journeys he's taken for a great meal. Broadcast dates for this episode: May 26, 2023 (originally aired)

Alison Herman hands it over to guest moderator Judd Apatow for a live conversation with Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner about their latest collaboration, THE FABELMANS. Steven Spielberg a screenwriter, director, producer, and studio executive. In a career spanning over four decades, Spielberg has directed nearly three dozen feature films and written or cowritten the screenplays for four. His directorial work has covered many themes and genres–from science-fiction and adventure films to subjects like the Holocaust, the Transatlantic slave trade, war, and terrorism. He has been the subject of widespread critical acclaim, and numerous awards and accolades including 19 nominations and 3 wins at the Academy Awards, multiple Golden Globe and Emmy nominations and wins, and the 2015 United States Presidential Medal of Freedom, among many others. Tony Kushner is a celebrated playwright, author, and screenwriter who is perhaps best known for writing the acclaimed play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes—and its TV miniseries adaptation—as well as for his collaborations with Steven Spielberg as screenwriter of MUNICH, LINCOLN—both of which earned him Oscar nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay—and the 2022 adaptation of WEST SIDE STORY. Angels in America earned Tony both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play in 1993, and he received Emmy and Writers Guild Awards for its onscreen adaptation. He also received the National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama in 2013. Together, Steven and Tony cowrote the screenplay for THE FABELMANS, which Steven also directed. The semi-autobiographical story of Spielberg's own adolescence follows a young Sammy Fabelman as he falls in love with movies after his parents take him to see "The Greatest Show on Earth." Armed with a camera, Sammy starts to make his own films at home, much to the delight of his supportive mother - and discovers how the power of films can help him see the truth about his dysfunctional family and those around him. The Oscar- and Writers Guild Award-nominated film was released in November 2022 and is now available on most major SVOD platforms.
