Any time we have mentioned Death Stranding on our humble little podcast, it has lead to chuckles. The news that it is been adapted to film by A24 just has us dumbfounded. We also talk about the awesomely named Evil Dead Burn. There are some things that we were happy to hear, though there is some cause for worry.Heart Eyes is the perfect date movie for the horror fan in your life. It is charming, funny, sweet, and scary. It is filled with strong performances and has some very effective kills. It is also the rare slasher which will have you rooting for the protagonists. At times, the rom com elements outshine the actual horror.Which isn't to say that it is a bad scary movie. Josh Ruben has proven he knows how to put together a good horror movie. Heart Eyes is another example of how he is criminally overlooked. We also talk about the Heart Eyes Killer and the potential for a franchise. Plus, a really creative use of a grape press.Shadow of God starts off like any other exorcism movie. It begins in a run down part of Mexico, a violent exorcism is taking place, and it is an introduction to the demon that will be the film's main villain. It is also the only part that will look familiar. This is one of the strangest things we have ever reviewed on this show. The big twist should be that the possessor is God, but the marketing reveals that. It then becomes a question of what they are going to do with it. Perhaps unsurprisingly, not very much. After all, what can you do when the Almighty is an integral part of the plot? Filled with inconsistencies, arthouse tendencies, and a clear lack of direction, Shadow of God ends up being a off putting yet fascinating mix. If you thought you hated Valentine's Day, you've got nothing over the serial killer in “Heart Eyes.” No Hallmark cards, 2 hour wait times at a fancy restaurant and overpriced flowers for this killer. This Heart Eyes Killer's MO is to kill couples in different cities every Valentine's Day. You'll see people get maimed in this movie but ubiquitous rom-com movie tropes get pummeled as well in a bitingly witty way, while the blood flows. Olivia Holt plays Abby who is trying to get over a break-up and she has a meet-cute at a coffee shop with Jay, played my Mason Gooding, who orders the exact type of drink she does. Very cliche right? “Heart Eyes” enjoys creating moments like that to just pull the rug out from under them and couples it with a no-holds-barred graphically violent slasher flick. To that end, Abby and Jay eventually find themselves getting chased by the Heart Eyes Killer so this courtship will have to happen while avoiding getting slashed by a psycho. Typical stuff. “Heart Eyes” also stars Jordana Brewster, Devon Sawa, Gigi Zumbado, Michaela Watkins, Yoson An and Jacque Drew. Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

HAPPY VALENTIMES!!!!! Or as Cupcake calls…Happy Madame Web (MW was released one year ago on Valentine's Day 2024). WillDaBeast and Cupcake are reviewing Heart Eyes…a rom-com horror comedy written by Christopher Landon (“Freaky”, “Happy Death Day”) and starring Mason Gooding, Olivia Holt, Devon Sawa and Jordana Brewster. Directed by sexy Josh Ruben, Heart Eyes was never telegraphed as an actual rom-com comedy from the trailers but does it herald a new vision of genre-parody mashup's or is this just a bloody limp noodle of a film centered around a Hallmark holiday? SHOW YOUR LOVE AND CHECK OUT THE EPISODE! Then stick around for the Pluses:  Mike talks a reality docu-drama that is capital “P” problematic (not the least of which is that it's a good 90 minute doc stretched over several streaming episodes) and Cupcake reviews streaming films for your viewing pleasure - a 2024 Sundance hit and romance between two sexy Brits (one of whom has sexy (Spider) feet).   #podcast #newpodcast #movie #moviereview #moviereviewpodcast #film #filmisnotdead #cinematography #filmcritic #hearteyes #HEK #joshruben #masongooding #oliviaholt #devonsawa #jordanabrewster #michaelawatkins #phillipmurphy #michaelkennedy #christopherlandon #stephenmurphy #jaywadley #scsreengems #divideconquer #groundcontrol #spyglassmediagroupTIMESTAMPS00:00:59 Intro00:02:32 Heart Eyes: Below and Above the Line00:24:48 Spoiler Free Thoughts00:41:56 Spoilers Ahead 00:51:52 Mike's Plus00:56:03 Cupcake's Plus01:04:29 Outro- - - - - - - - - -WE ARE WATCH SKIP PLUS! Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! This February we're celebrating “Dreddruary,” where we cover movies based on the British comic book character, Judge Dredd! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Karl Urban's 2012 dark dystopian action massacre, Dredd!Impressive use of a low budget! A near-future that seems (unfortunately) believable! Quick and effective world-building! Really cool helmets! A very dangerous atrium! A simple, contained story inspired by the action classic, The Raid! A surprisingly stripped-down comic book movie, especially when compared with modern examples! Absolutely brutal slow motion violence! Absurdly large buildings! A solid cast that includes Olivia Thirlby, Wood Harris, Harry Potter's Domhnall Gleeson with blue cyber eyes, an uncomfortably cruel Lena Headey, and the lower half of Karl Urban's face doing some of the greatest frown-acting you've ever seen! A movie based on a British comic book about America, starring European people doing American accents, which may also secretly be the first movie directed by Civil War's Alex Garland! In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on The Wolf of Snow Hollow, the new Valentine's Day-themed slasher, Heart Eyes, and the genre-bending thriller Companion! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Editors - Brett W. Bachman, ACE and Josh Ethier, ACE Long time friends, but first time co-editors, Brett and Josh are no strangers to working in the horror/thriller genre.  The same can't be said for COMPANION director Drew Hancock. Not only was this film Hancock's first feature as a director, but it was also his first real foray into genre filmmaking.  But that didn't stop either Brett or Josh from seeing how good this film was going to be right from the script.  What they couldn't predict, was how great a working experience the whole thing would be. Written and directed by Drew Hancock, COMPANION stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid as a couple on a weekend getaway with friends at a remote cabin that unravels into violence amid revelations that one of the guests is what's known as a companion robot. BRETT W. BACHMAN, ACE Brett W. Bachman, ACE, is an editor of film & television with acclaimed titles such as Mandy, Pig, & The Fall of the House of Usher. He has worked with leading voices in genre film, such as Panos Cosmatos, Mike Flanagan, Josh Ruben, and Elijah Wood. Several of his feature films have premiered at renowned international festivals, including Sundance, TIFF, SXSW, and Cannes. He's also brought his talents to the small screen with numerous television and commercial projects. Recent & upcoming titles include: Companion, a thriller from writer/director Drew Hancock and New Line Cinema, Rabbit Trap starring Dev Patel, and Heart Eyes, a romcom-slasher hybrid from director Josh Ruben. Additional titles include Werewolves Within, Color Out of Space, The Toxic Avenger, The Vigil, Cooties, and many more. Bachman found his love of editing in his formative years, developing a passion for storytelling through three self-produced documentaries when he was just 19. At 22 years old, he was one of the youngest members of his AFI Conservatory editing program. Since then, he's nurtured his love of filmmaking with an array of eclectic projects as an Editor, Associate Producer, and Executive Producer JOSH ETHIER, ACE Josh Ethier is a renowned Los Angeles based film editor who has left a lasting mark on the horror, thriller and action genres; he literally wears his passion for the genres on his sleeve. His works have premiered at esteemed film festivals such as the Toronto International Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, Tribeca Film Festival, Beyond Fest and Fantastic Fest.  Ethier is most well known for his frequent collaborations with director Joe Begos, with whom he has crafted a unique, LOUD and impactful cinematic style. Their partnership has resulted in several acclaimed films, including "Bliss," a psychedelic horror film that explores the descent of an artist into madness; "VFW," a gritty, action-packed thriller about war veterans defending their local VFW post from a drug-addled gang; and most recently, "Christmas Bloody Christmas," a festive yet terrifying holiday horror film that's streaming on Shudder. These collaborations have resonated with audiences and critics alike, showcasing Ethier's ability to enhance Begos' visionary storytelling through his editing.  Ethier's impressive filmography includes notable titles such as Oz Perkins' "Gretel & Hansel" for Orion Pictures and MGM, a dark reimagining of the classic fairy tale; William Brent Bell's "Orphan: First Kill," the prequel to the cult horror favorite for Paramount Pictures; Henry Dunham's "The Standoff at Sparrow Creek," a tense, dialogue-driven thriller about a mass shooting at a police funeral; and "Mayhem," a high-octane action horror film starring Steven Yeun that highlights his versatility as an editor of action and comedy. In 2021, Ethier's contributions to film editing were formally recognized when he was invited to join American Cinema Editors (ACE), an honor that signifies his standing in the industry amongst his peers. Olivia Holt Interview: Breaking Out of the Disney Box & Becoming a Horror Star

We have a wealth of wonderfully talented actors who got their start making Disney shows and films. But, as often discussed on Collider Ladies Night, this is an industry with a habit of boxing artists in to the first they do well. One particularly popular box? The Disney box, and that's the one I focused on with Heart Eyes star, Olivia Holt.Holt's star started to rise with not one, but two Disney shows and a Disney Channel Original Movie. First it was Disney XD's Kickin' It, then came the movie Girl vs. Monster, and after that it was the Disney Channel Original Series, I Didn't Do It. All fantastic opportunities for a young actor getting a foothold in the industry, but all projects that would wind up labeling Holt as a particular kind of actor. When the time came to grow beyond Disney projects, Holt cared a good deal about that carrying label - until she didn't. “I just couldn't care anymore. I think I cared so deeply about people not wanting to view me as a Disney star, and now I just embrace it.”Embracing it has served Holt exceptionally well since the end of I Didn't Do It. While making the most of the invaluable lessons learned on those Disney sets, Holt has gone on to headline the short-lived but beloved Marvel series Cloak & Dagger. She also delivered big starring in the Hulu series Cruel Summer. She starred opposite Kiernan Shipka in Prime Video's horror comedy Totally Killer, and now she leads yet another slasher movie that's a total blast, Heart Eyes. Holt plays Ally in the Josh Ruben-directed romantic comedy slasher film. After a setback at work, Ally agrees to have dinner with Jay (Mason Gooding), the hotshot designer her boss brought in to oversee her assignment. Trouble is, it's Valentine's Day and the Heart Eyes Killer is out for blood. When HEK suspects Ali and Jay are on a date, they become HEK's next target. With Heart Eyes now playing in theaters nationwide, Holt took the time to swing by the Collider Ladies Night studio to recap her journey to becoming an undeniable force in the genre space.
