Guest: Edward Keenan, city columnist As municipal elections across Ontario enter their final week, the Toronto election has been bereft of interest. Sure, housing and affordability are big issues, but those will require all levels of government working together to tackle. There are a lot of small things that add up to big quality of life improvements when living in a city, and it's some of those where it feels like the city is dropping the ball. The Star has been exploring these issues in the “Can't We Do Better” series. This episode was produced by Alexis Green, Paulo Marques and Raju Mudhar. Audio source: CARP
Original Show Notes from June 2019: The government stinks. I know it. You know it. We all know it. So, instead of sending your hard earned money to the government every year to do "societal good", why not send it to nonprofits who actually, ya know, know what they're doing and do it well? That's where "We Do Better" comes into play. We Do Better seeks to promote the freedom and well-being of all Americans by maximizing the quality and accessibility of public services and accountability in their provision. We Do Better is one of the leaders in advocating for charitable credits in cities, counties, states, and nationwide that allow taxpayers to direct a portion of their taxes to organizations that meet human needs in their communities. Listen as Rick Rivkin (part of We Do Better's national team) joins The Brian Nichols Show to discuss how easy it is to become an advocate of We Do Better's mission. Later, Rick discusses some of the wins that We Do Better has under their belt, different means of grassroots outreach that We Do Better has taken advantage of, and how easy it is for anyone to have their tax dollars go towards charities they care about rather than go to our inefficient government. In today's flagship Lions of Liberty podcast, Marc is joined by three major heroes in the libertarian sphere who have been leading by example by showing how people not only can but DO receive help through the voluntary actions of others. Marc welcomes back Daniel Johnson of We Do Better and Gret Glyer of DonorSee, along with first time guest Brent DeRidder of the Liberty Coalition for Disaster Relief! They discuss the various ways their organization have been able to provide aid and opportunities for people through voluntary means, the kind of roadblocks they often face from government intervention (and paperwork!), and highlight how anyone who sees a problem can take action and rally others to the cause. With the election day being today in Indiana, I wanted to discuss my decision. I will weigh the pros and cons of voting and how I would vote if a ballot were in front of me. A vote is like a rifle; its usefulness depends upon the character of the user. -Theodore Roosevelt The lesser of two evils: I've done this. It doesn't feel good, and I'll never do it again. I won't believe the propaganda of "the most important election of our lives" every 4 years (now 2 thanks to Trump). To vote is not violence: This is a discussion for the hardcore Libertarians. I don't think that voting is in fact enacting violence on another party. Because it is so engrained in the system, a vote either way doesn't move the needle on this. To not vote is a vote: This is because it's a statement that says, "I do not approve of the candidates listed, up to the system as a whole. As such, I will vote with my time by putting it toward a more productive end." Vote with actions: This is how I will vote. I will vote by working with We Do Better to help organizations access the funds they need to continue to do better at helping people. I will vote with my actions in my work to create economic liberty for myself so it doesn't matter who's in office. I will vote with my voice on my blog, podcast, and daily conversations to explain the tenants of liberty. Join the Conversation of Our Generation!!! In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie examine the Flobots classic Handlebars and take a look at what we can only see as the most confused rebuttal of capitalism ever conceived. Why didn’t this one make the cut? Let’s find out. This week in I Heard This Happened: the world’s most musical hardcore, & the next model Todd Rundgren. Nicky’s album this week is NoiSays by NoiSays. The album is something like what I imagine would happen if Miles Davis was born in the 90s and a product of divorce where mom & dad keep buying guitars and lessons to prove how much they love him but he only gets more angry. This is hands down one of the most musical hardcore records i’ve ever heard. I think they’re technically some variant of math-rock but they’re quite heavy. Highly recomended. Also this week: Lizzie found the next incarnation of Todd Rundgren. Low Poly Breakfast by Nova Bound is a great pop-rock offering with hints of Wings, Metronomy and all the best of 70’s soft rock all milled about in there. Both of us really enjoyed this one. This week’s interview is with Daniel Johnson of We Do Better. The organization is dedicated to making sure government money gets into the hands of organizations that get results. We had a blast with our conversation and sadly some of it was cut for time. Join the Freedom Choir to get the full interview. Check out Daniel & We Do Better here: http://www.wedobetter.org. Today, I am honored to welcome Dan Johnson of We Do Better to talk to me about how to help charities and organizations that provide better solutions to meeting human needs. His organization focuses on enacting charitable tax credits modeled after the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit so people can put their money into charities that are doing better than government at providing for human needs. I have recently gotten involved in this organization in the action arm to pass one of these credits in Indianapolis to count against property taxes on an annual basis. I will be documenting my journey somewhat, or at least keeping you in the loop as I go through this. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/conofourgen/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/conofourgen/support
