I had the pleasure of sitting down with one of the coolest young artists in Humboldt County, Rowdy. I talked with Rowdy about his early first experiences in the music business, and an interesting story about a record label deal in Los Angeles. Rowdy also talks about the music and his growth. He's been producing, learning piano and other instruments. Him and his boy Cam built their own studio and they are constantly leveling up towards their goals and vision. Rowdy talks about the beautiful people who are doing great things by providing outlets for youth right now in Humboldt County — Maggie (principal at Hoopa High), Zach Lehner (educator, and one of the founders/as well as current President of the Humboldt Hip Hop Congress), and JUiCE from JUiCEBox - all doing work to grow people here in Humboldt. Rowdy talks about the beauty of hip hop. The longevity of it and how he wants to make timeless music. We talked about the power of Kendrick Lamar and how timeless his work is. We talked about Mr Morale and The Big Steppers. We talked about JID and The Forever Story. We talked about J Cole, Tyler the Creator and the importance of being yourself. We talked about Mac Miller and the power of the music he made while he was here. Rowdy gives his propers to Cameron for all the support he's given him. There was a lot of prolific conversation, it was a really fire interview, so don't miss this episode! Local rapper and Pacific Union teacher Zach Lehner -- aka “Zigzilla” --has spent many years sharing his passion for hip-hop both on the stage and in the classroom. You might know Zigzilla as one half of hip-hop duo Area Sound, who rapped about dad-life in the music video for “Glamorous Lifestyle,” Or perhaps you are familiar with the educational rap videos Lehner created during the pandemic. On this week’s episode of Humboldt Holding Up -- the Outpost’s good enough podcast -- Lehner talks more about those projects, Pacific Union’s plans for bringing kids back to in-person learning, how distance learning has impacted his six grade students and some of the ways he’s gotten creative with his teaching during the pandemic. Lehner also chats with LoCO about how he and his other half Liam “Steamer” Nelson formed Area Sound, recording their latest album Squeeze the Elephant, and how he’s balanced it all with the “glamorous lifestyle” of being a dad. Of course, Zigzilla also spits a freestyle educational rap. A Humboldt Holding Up first!

This week I’ve got a packed house for you.  Greg Smith, Michael Tanner, and Zach Lehner are here to talk about their young adult horror series, Junior Braves of the Apocalypse from Oni Press.  The comic follows a group of scouts as they return from a camping trip to find a zombie apocalypse has decimated their hometown. The second volume, Out of the Woods, just dropped this week.   Quick note on the audio for this show. We had some technical difficulties getting Zach connected, but we figure it out a few minutes after we started chatting.  We could see Zach, but not hear him. That’s why we get so excited when he chimes in all of a sudden. You can find out more about Junior Braves of the Apocalypse at the official site, JuniorBraves.com, Facebook.com/JuniorBraves65, @JuniorBraves65 on Twitter, and @JuniorBraves on Instagram.  Zach can be found online on Instagram @lehnerzach. Greg can be found on Twitter @ThatAmazingTwit. Michael can be found on Twitter @MikeIsErnie. In other news, I recently posted the latest Loot Crate unboxing videos to the HorrorTalk YouTube channel.  I film these with my two kids and they’re increasingly out of control. In the newest one, my three year old tries to slit my throat with a plastic scalpel.  It’s a little nuts. Check them out and subscribe to the channel for more of these unboxing videos and other content. Zach Lehner joins Patrick in a very echo-y room to talk all about his brand new Oni Press graphic novel “Junior Brave of the Apocalypse Book 2: Out of the Woods.” This conversation gets deeper than either of them expected as they dig way beneath the surface of comic book creation and the importance of Calvin and Hobbes. Also, they play amateur detectives and explore their abandoned surroundings. Zach is signing at Challengers all day on Wednesday, August 8th from 11am to 7pm (along with “Girls With Slingshots” creator Danielle Corsetto from 4pm -7pm, but she is not on this episode). Bonus! Dal pops in to talk briefly about the New Japan Pro Wrestling G1 Special!
