Episode Chapter Summaries Chapter 1: The Cosmic Zipper — From Silicon Valley to Telltale Games (00:01 – 04:13) Anne introduces BAFTA award-winning actor Cissy Jones, listing her massive credits across the video game landscape. Cissy shares her unique origin story, starting not in theater, but in the fast-paced venture capital world of Silicon Valley. Despite an early childhood calling to act, she followed corporate expectations until a profound sense of unhappiness led her to a voiceover school. Cissy introduces her concept of the "cosmic zipper"—that beautiful alignment where life clicks together once you finally uncover your true purpose. Within two years of rigorous study, she booked her first massive multi-character rolepacket as Katya in Telltale Games' The Walking Dead. Chapter 2: The Ultimate Boss Move & The Impact of the Mic (04:14 – 07:47) Anne pauses to highlight an incredible tactical move from Cissy's early days: learning how to engineer audioaudio engineer sessions when she couldn't afford a class ticket, allowing her to stay in the casting room and absorb director feedback through osmosis. Cissy highlights her deep appreciation for characters like Lilith in Disney's The Owl House. She recounts emotional fan interactions at Comic-Cons, where parents and children shared how her character's arc helped them process their own queer or neurodivergent identities, reinforcing the true purpose of human storytelling. Chapter 3: Mastering Storytelling & Leaning Into Vulnerability (07:48 – 11:44) Anne asks Cissy what internal mechanics make a voice actor a master storyteller. Cissy credits her willingness to tap deeply into intense, unshielded human emotion on demand. She offers a crucial piece of advice for talent exploring the character and interactive space: when a script calls for real, raw emotion, do not paint over it with cartoony comedy. Voice actors must lean courageously into authentic psychological vulnerability while carefully managing their own mental well-being when a heavy scene leaves them emotionally drained. Chapter 4: The 3-Second Threat & The AI Wake-Up Call (11:45 – 17:31) The conversation turns to advocacy as Cissy recounts a terrifying experience during the 2021 COVID lockdown. Fans alerted her to AI voice clone platforms generating pornographic content using her vocal likeness from The Owl House. When she demanded a takedown, the platforms refused, citing a complete lack of protective voice laws. Cissy breaks down a jarring technological reality: in 2021, creating a believable vocal clone required roughly 10 hours of studio audio; today, it takes just 3 seconds. She highlights why NAVA is actively working with legislators to target security loopholes, citing an experiment where NAVA co-founder Karin Gilfrey successfully bypassed her personal bank security using an AI clone of her own voice. Chapter 5: Ethovox — Creating a Safe Haven Under Lock and Key (17:32 – 24:03) Drawing on her technical venture capital background, Cissy shares why she refused to sit idly by and instead launched her own ethical AI startup called Ethovox. Unlike predatory public marketplaces that ingest and trade off voice talent data, Ethovox operates as a highly secure, private repository. The company explicitly mandates full actor consent, works hand-in-hand with talent agencies to negotiate fair rates, and refuses to sell baseline training data. Cissy reveals a massive boss move: walking away from a lucrative seven-figure institutional funding offer because the investors admitted they did not care if voice actors survived. Chapter 6: The Fight in D.C. & How the VO Community Can Help (24:04 – End) Cissy praises NAVA's leadership—specifically Tim Friedlander, CKarin Gilfrey, and Matthew Parham—for their relentless, bipartisan legislative efforts in Washington, D.C., to pass protections such aspushes in Washington, D.C. to pass protections like the federal No Fakes Act. She stresses that while Washington politicians may not inherently care about actors, they care deeply about cybersecurity risks and digital identity theft affecting their voters. The episode wraps with an urgent call to action for the VO community to support NAVA through membership dues, alongside an invitation to participate in NAVA's annual Day of Play charity streaming event. Top 10 Boss Takeaways Watch for the "Cosmic Zipper": If you are forcing a career path and constantly meeting friction and exhaustion, step back. When you strike the path you were truly meant to walk, the doors lock into place effortlessly. Immerse yourself through service: If you cannot afford premium training starting out, find alternative ways to be in the room. Learn to engineer, edit, or assist so you can witness directing choices and build organic network connections. Storytelling demands real human impact: Vocal mechanics mean absolutely nothing if your performance isn't reaching past the microphone to touch, change, or validate the human experience of the listener. Don't hide behind a cartoon read: When a script asks for deep psychological weight or heavy sorrow, do not soften the blow with safe, performative humor. Stand confidently in your vulnerability. Acknowledge the 3-second reality: Vocal cloning technology requires as little as 3 seconds of pristine audio—meaning your outgoing cell phone voicemail clip is enough to compromise security systems or clone your identity. AI needs ethical boundaries: Innovation cannot be stopped, but it must be met with the three foundational pillars of advocacy: absolute Consent, fair Compensation, and structural Control over personal vocal assets. Protect your core data: Avoid voice AI platforms that treat your unique biological voiceprint as disposable ammunition to train broader, open-source language models. Reputation over revenue: True leaders know when to walk away. Cissy's rejection of a massive seven-figure check because investors devalued human talent is the ultimate blueprint for protecting your personal integrity over a quick paycheck. Bipartisan framing is key in advocacy: When pushing for systemic change or workplace protections, leave personal political ideologies outside the room. Speak directly to staffers about the universal dangers of digital kidnapping, fraud, and corporate IP theft. A rising tide lifts all boats: Success in this industry is never a zero-sum game. There is plenty of room for creative minds to flourish. Lift your peers up, guard each other's rights, and protect the human element.

On June 13, 1895, a two-seat vehicle driven by Émile Levassor crossed the finish line in Paris 48 hours and 48 minutes after leaving that city in the world's first automobile race. The journey took contestants on a 1,178 kilometer course to Bordeaux and back and Levassor arrived six hours before the runner-up. However, the rules called for a four-seater and both were ineligible for victory. What sort of race is Charlottesville Community Engagement documenting? I'm Sean Tubbs, and we can only know through the stories. In this edition:* Kellie Brown is stepping down as Charlottesville's director of Neighborhood Development Services (read the story)* Area officials report from recent Chamber trip to Chapel Hill (read the story)* Albemarle Supervisors presented with first transportation priority list in a few years (read the story)* Albemarle Supervisors allow building to remain within stream buffer (read the story on C-Ville Weekly)* UVA Provost: Record number of applications for Class of 2030 (read the story)* Only two buildings left to be programmed at UVA's Emmet-Ivy Corridor (read the story)* Buildings and Grounds Committee gets details on UVA's next heat plant (read the story)Thanks for reading Charlottesville Community Engagement ! This post is public so feel free to share it.First shout-out: Plant Virginia NativesSummertime means that the invasive vines are winning the battle at my house but one day I will attain the skills to make my garden something more palatable and less like it's an exterior shot in the Walking Dead.I often look longingly at the Plant Virginia Natives to inspire my dreams of a tidy yard. Plant Virginia Natives is part of a partnership with ten regional campaigns for ten different ecosystems across Virginia, from the Northern Piedmont to the Eastern Shore.Take a look at the full map below for the campaign for native species where you are in the Commonwealth. For the Charlottesville area, download a free copy of the handbook: Piedmont Native Plants: A Guide for Landscapes and GardenSecond shout-out: Celebrating the community's other information organizations! There are a lot of stories each week that go out through this newsletter, but no one information outlet can put together the entire picture. That's why each regular edition ends with a section called Reading Material.Charlottesville is fortunate to have a media landscape that includes the Charlottesville Daily Progress, C-Ville Weekly, Charlottesville Tomorrow, and Cville Right Now, I curate links from these sources because I believe a truly informed community needs multiple perspectives. There's also the Cavalier Daily, Vinegar Hill Magazine, the Fluvanna Review, the Crozet Gazette, NBC29, CBS19, and other sources. But if you look every day, you'll find links to articles in national publications, all linked to give you more perspectives on some of the issues of our times. Now more than ever, journalism is needed. To be a citizen of a democracy, you must seek information from multiple sources. Consume only one and you are at risk of becoming a zombie!#1069-A ends with a Town Crier Productions backstorySaturday podcast editions mark the end of one work week and the beginning of another. As soon as “publish” is hit I'll get to work on the next set of stories. Paid subscribers and other contributors have been keeping this newsletter afloat for nearly six years now.The first edition on July 13, 2026 is a lot different from where the newsletter is now. The original idea was for the newsletter to be a five to ten minute podcast each day. My career began as an intern for WVTF Public Radio back in January 1995. That's where I learned to write copy for broadcast, and learned to write quickly. But there weren't really a lot of jobs in public radio and unsettling experiences in New Hampshire in 1996 caused me to lose interest. It took living outside the country for a year to want to come back and want to get back to this career.I've been in Charlottesville now for nearly 24 years moving here for a job in public radio but I was not a good fit for the organization that hired me. I went back to freelancing but that wasn't enough to make a living so I worked at Court Square Tavern and created a business to try to figure out if I could make money off of podcasting.I couldn't, but the Charlottesville Podcasting Network was an experiment in trying to use audio to get information out in different ways. By 2007 I had to take a steady job and for eleven years I learned about this community in my time at Charlottesville Tomorrow. And now I've just concluded a week in which I published five morning newsletters each day. I don't think I could go back to afternoon publication anymore because the benefits of the switch become more clear each day.For now, though, I really want to hit send so I can get on with the day. There are a lot of stories to dig into today. I'm grateful for paid subscribers, sponsors, and donors for their belief in the work I'm doing. In so many ways, I'm still that 21-year-old kid in Roanoke in awe that I got to write stories about local government. I believe in what I do and appreciate you reading to the last line. Now on his second album of his Singularity arc, Bear tells us about getting every heavy hitter in hard rock and heavy metal to join him in releasing tunes. Then we debate the ethical implications of having the power to make anyone instantly shit their pants once per month… at the cost of randomly shitting your own pants once a year. Is the trade worth it?Things get even more ridiculous as we determine whether fighting a chimpanzee inside a Costco is preferable to battling a kangaroo in a trampoline park, and whether one night in a haunted hotel is actually worse than spending a night surrounded by toddlers who never sleep. We also break down the latest headlines, including the wild swings in the stock market as AI mania continues to rattle investors, a surprising Texas political twist involving Ken Paxton and James Talarico, efforts to impeach a federal judge over a judicial discipline case, and the latest warnings about the future of Social Security trust funds. As always, questionable logic, unnecessary confidence, and absolutely no professional expertise included.Music featured in this episode: “Sweetness” by Mr. Goody Two Shoes (Jimmy Eat World Cover)

Toye made the move into television directing after working for five years as a production assistant and a decade as an editor. This background in the editing room gave him a solid sense of how to tell a clear story, which helped considerably in his work on such complex series as Chuck (NBC 2007–12) and Fringe (Fox 2008–13). Los Angeles native Toye got his first screen credit working as a production assistant on Billy Crystal’s 1989 HBO special Midnight Train to Moscow, before moving into visual effects on films like The Addams Family (1991) and then working as an assistant editor on hit films such as Forrest Gump (1994) and Men in Black (1997). As a TV director, Toye cut his teeth on network TV action and sci-fi thrillers like Alias, Lost, and Fringe and has also worked on character-rich dramas such as The Good Wife. That experience running the gamut between drama genres served Toye well in recent years, directing episodes of genre series like Westworld, Snowpiercer, Watchmen and The Walking Dead. In 2024, his prolific output included The Boys and Fallout. The same year, Toye received acclaim for his work on Shōgun, helming four episodes of the Emmy-winning FX drama series, including season finale “A Dream of a Dream.” The season’s penultimate episode, “Crimson Sky,” earned Toye his first-ever Emmy for outstanding directing, which was also Toye’s first-ever career nomination in the category. Toye followed it up by directing the pilot episode of Prime Video's prequel series The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, starring Chris Pratt and Taylor Kitsch. He set to direct the opening episodes of the Prime Video series Bloodaxe and God of War. ### For over 35 years, Beth Kushnick has created character-driven settings for countless award-winning television series and feature films. It's time for your favorite Zombie Movie Podcast brought to you by Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, which is here to present another fascinating edition of Dead Man Still Walking with Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop! This time, Dr. Bishop journeys back to 1974 for a double-feature exploration of two very different zombie films: Dead of Night (also known as "Deathdream") and Sugar Hill. One is a somber, politically charged meditation on the lingering trauma of the Vietnam War, while the other is a colorful blend of Blaxploitation cinema, voodoo lore, revenge storytelling, and classic raised-dead zombies. In this episode, Kyle examines how Dead of Night uses zombiism as a powerful metaphor for veterans struggling to return home after war, creating one of the most emotionally devastating zombie narratives of the 1970s. He also discusses Sugar Hill as a noteworthy revival of the voodoo zombie tradition, connecting it to earlier zombie cinema while highlighting its campy entertainment value, memorable Baron Samedi character, and undead revenge squad. Along the way, Dr. Walking Dead reflects on the evolution of zombie films during the years between Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, offering historical context for this episode's two overlooked entries in zombie movie history. Note: This episode contains spoilers for both Dead of Night (1974) and Sugar Hill (1974). Also, to view ALL of Dr. Bishop's Dead Man Still Walking solocast episodes can USE THIS LINK. Dr. Walking Dead also presents a popular segment called The Dead Zone on regular episodes of this podcast. For his Dead Man Still Walking solocast episodes, Dr. Bishop will focus exclusively on zombie films, with the occasional exploration of zombie-related themes, zombie television, and other zombie media (e.g., comics, literature, etc.). Dr. Bishop is an academic and professional scholar of zombie films and other zombie narratives. He has been teaching for 26 years. In 1956, Italy's most opulent ocean liner went down off Nantucket after a head-on collision in the fog, taking 46 lives and earning a place among the worst maritime disasters in history. But the dying didn't stop there — in the seven decades since, the wreck dubbed the "Mt. Everest of Wreck Diving" has claimed roughly 18 more souls, swallowing the divers drawn to its depths and feeding whispers that something down there is cursed.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources and full transcript): https://weirddarkness.com/andreadoriaFEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: Movies like Shaun of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, World War Z, and TV shows like The Walking Dead, have made the subject of zombies a fairly popular topic over recent years. And while we all know these undead creatures are purely make-believe, the idea of the zombie has been around for thousands of years… and in the Voodoo culture, they've found a way to make zombies a real, horrifying thing. (The Disturbing Truth Behind Voodoo Zombies) *** In July of 1956, the SS Andrea Doria collided with another ship and quickly sank to the bottom of the ocean. Today it is a tourist destination for brave divers who not only want to see something hauntingly beautiful, but who also dare to investigate a wreck that has been deemed by many to be cursed – and for good reason. (The Cursed Remains of the SS Andrea Doria) *** Paranormal author and researcher G. Michael Vasey tells of a personal incident that took place recently where he saw what could be described as a “peripheral person”. (Peripheral People) *** Sir Clive Sinclair might have been a man ahead of his time. The late inventor created all manner of strange and wonderful gadgets – most of which you've likely never heard of. But that doesn't mean you can say they were failures. (The Inventor of Weird Contraptions) *** If the legends are to believed, you'll want to avoid driving down Nan Tucks Lane in East Sussex - unless you don't mind coming into contact with a vengeful ghost. (The Witch of Nan Tucks Lane) *** Where in the bible do we see the story of fallen angels sleeping with women to produce a breed of giants? Most would point to the book of Genesis – but in the unincluded book of Enoch, it tells a more-detailed account, worthy of a horror movie. (The Story of Giants and Fallen Angels) *** Some people collect baseball cards, others coins, and others Pokemon. There's no telling what someone might find enough of an interest in to begin collecting. And collecting books is one of the most common – but when your collecting becomes a compulsion and you can't stop yourself, it can get out of hand. Just ask Thomas Phillipps… the man who was addicted to books… to an extreme level.

In this episode, Travis Chappell and producer Eric dive into the business behind entertainment franchises, streaming rights, and why intellectual property can become one of the most valuable assets in media. Using The Walking Dead as the centerpiece of the conversation, they break down how legacy TV shows continue generating hundreds of millions of dollars long after their original run, the economics behind licensing content to streaming platforms like Netflix, and why some media companies struggle even with iconic brands. The conversation also explores storytelling, bingeability, and what creators can learn from both hit and failed entertainment properties. On this episode we talk about: Why AMC is exploring new licensing deals for The Walking Dead The economics of intellectual property and streaming rights Why some TV shows become timeless rewatchable hits while others fade away The differences between bingeable sitcoms and serialized dramas What creators and entrepreneurs can learn from the unpredictable nature of hit media Top 3 Takeaways Intellectual property becomes exponentially more valuable when it gains cultural relevance and long-term audience loyalty. Even massive production budgets and star actors cannot guarantee success — timing, audience connection, and luck still play major roles. Companies grow faster when they focus on their core strengths instead of trying to control every piece of distribution themselves. Notable Quotes “The currency is attention.” “You can't just decide that something's going to end up like Seinfeld.” “Having a plan does not mean it's going to be successful.” Connect with Travis Chappell: Instagram: @travischappell Website: https://travischappell.com A Word from Our Sponsors: Are you ready to start your own creator journey and make it big?
