    Bear McCreary Talks Singularity: Ekleipsis

If you know the name Bear McCreary, it's probably from the goosebumps he's given you without you even knowing it was him. You may know his work from Battlestar Galactica, The Walking Dead, God of War, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. He's one of the most prolific composers working today, and on July 31st, he's releasing Singularity: Ekleipsis, his second metal album. He sat down with us to talk about creating something that is his own art. We dug into how neither of us comes from a metal background and what that means for the music he is creating. He drops some great recommendations of things to listen to in order to find your way into the genre. The album itself is brilliant from top to bottom. Bear McCreary discusses how this was, in his opinion, more finely tuned than the first, but both albums have been on constant repeat for me lately. About Bear McCreary and Singularity: Ekleipsis Award-winning composer and recording artist Bear McCreary began his career as a protégé of legendary film composer Elmer Bernstein, before bursting onto the scene scoring the revered series Battlestar Galactica in 2004. Since then, McCreary has won three Emmy Awards, including two for Disney's Percy Jackson and the Olympians and one for his theme for Da Vinci's Demons, a musical palindrome, and has won twelve International Film Music Critics Association Awards, including the award for Score of the Year in 2024, his second. Named the 23rd Most Definitive Bear in Popular Culture (The Ringer), he's also been the subject of a clue on Jeopardy! Project highlights include The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Amazon); Foundation (Apple TV); the beloved series Outlander (STARZ); Godzilla: King of the Monsters (Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures); The Walking Dead (AMC); and Netflix's Academy Award–nominated documentary Crip Camp (produced by Barack and Michelle Obama). McCreary's celebrated scores for Sony PlayStation's blockbusters God of War and God of War Ragnarök have earned him two BAFTA Awards and two Grammy nominations. In 2024, McCreary released The Singularity, a hard-rock concept album featuring legendary rock talent including Slash, Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Rufus Wainwright, and more.  McCreary has collaborated with artists from across the musical spectrum, including Hozier, Fiona Apple, Shirley Manson (Garbage), Annie Lennox, and the late Sinéad O'Connor. In 2014, Maestro Gustavo Dudamel conducted a suite of McCreary's music with the L.A. Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl.

Zombies can teach us something about ourselves. In recent years, zombie movies have transitioned from mere horror flicks to a profound commentary on humanity, morality, and the essence of civilization. With the rise of popular series like "The Walking Dead," audiences have been challenged to reflect on deeper themes that resonate beyond the screen. Joining us to discuss zombies and their relevance to us as Christians, we assemble our regular Iron and Myth panel: Doug Van Dorn (DouglasVanDorn.com), author of Battle for the Bible's Truth: Genesis, Jesus, and the Second Century Plot to Deny the Messiah; Brian Godawa (Godawa.com), best-selling author of Daniel: Exile in Babylon, the first novel in a trilogy about the life of Daniel; and Dr. Judd Burton (BurtonBeyond.net), author of Interview With the Giant. Zombie movies have undergone a remarkable transformation since George Romero's groundbreaking film, “Night of the Living Dead.” Initially, these movies were simple horror stories centered around gore and survival. However, as society has changed, so have the narratives surrounding zombies. Today, they often reflect contemporary societal fears, such as viral outbreaks and the erosion of humanity. This evolution compels viewers to confront their own values and behaviors in dire situations. Stories centered on zombies transcend the boundaries of horror; they serve as a profound cultural, moral, and spiritual reflection. These films compel us to consider our core values, the fabric of our communities, and the essence of our humanity. There's so much weight to this episode, in different ways. It's absolutely landmark episode of The Walking Dead. And I didn't remember how much it was just Negan applying constant pressure to Rick, until he breaks. Yes, it's hard to watch, and I don't blame anyone who thought it was too much. And also I think for what it was, it was done so well. Lucy and I are so pleased to be joined by Ben for this one to help us do it justice. Of course Ben hosts this podcast for Dead City coverage, and I think it was a good balance of viewpoints among the three of us. Hope you enjoy! Though her time on the series is brief, Annie's presence reshapes the emotional landscape around Negan, revealing a side of him defined not by brutality, but by responsibility, partnership, and the terrifying hope of a future. Consider what happened after Team USA beat Australia 2-0. The players stopped and prayed.Remember when they told us faith was finished? Remember when the experts assured us religion would be replaced by social media influencers and emotional support llamas?Instead, Team USA wins, prays, and much of the world cheers America. Imagine that. The same people who spent years telling us America was the villain suddenly found themselves singing our National Anthem. It's almost like people secretly prefer confidence over self-loathing.Meanwhile, down in Colombia, voters just handed socialism another eviction notice.Socialism has become the world's longest-running infomercial. Every season starts with promises of equality and ends with somebody standing in line for toilet paper wondering where all the economists disappeared. The Left keeps treating socialism like that ex who emptied your bank account. "This time it'll be different." Sure. And this time the raccoon won't get into the bird feeder.Speaking of things not working out, let's travel to New York, where a Pride organization announced it's dissolving after its drag queen founder was arrested on child pornography charges. Now before anybody starts hyperventilating, the point isn't that one criminal represents everyone. The point is how quickly the media's curiosity evaporates when a story points in the wrong ideological direction. These are the same people who can spot systemic injustice from orbit but suddenly develop cataracts when an uncomfortable headline appears. Then there's Los Angeles.Federal agents reportedly descended on Skid Row investigating allegations tied to voter registration fraud.Think about the symbolism.California spent years telling us voter fraud was rarer than a unicorn riding a bicycle. Then investigators show up on Skid Row like they're filming a crossover episode between Law & Order and The Walking Dead. You know what's remarkable?California will allegedly investigate whether you're sufficiently gay to qualify for certain diversity contracting programs.California businesses have to go through a “gay-certification” process to receive special contracts meant for gay-owned companies, Christopher Rufo of City Journal reported Tuesday. If these business owners fail to sufficiently prove their claimed gayness, they may face up to a year in jail, while California's vetting process for voters is practically nonexistent. That's right.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Welcome, folks!I've got good news for conservatives today. Conservatism is back. Not sneaking through the back door. Not hiding in the bushes wearing a fake mustache. I'm talking about kicking the front door open, flipping on the lights, and discovering that half the country was afraid of the dark for no reason.Consider what happened after Team USA beat Australia 2-0. Iron and Myth 51: Zombies, Hollywood, and the Bible

By embracing the lessons imparted within these narratives, we can cultivate a deeper sense of empathy and comprehension in our own lives.  Put simply, how far would we go to save those we love—remembering the words of Jesus, “Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."
