Ep. 010 - The Story Behind KeyBar

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 10, 2019 68:58

Beav sits down with Mike Taylor, the inventor and owner of KeyBar. If you can imagine a Swiss Army Knife for your keys, that’s what a KeyBar is. This seemingly simple device was a major innovation in the mid 2000’s when he made the first ones completely by hand. The genesis of the product was formed due to Mike’s job at the time as a chief engineer for the Disney brand of hotels. A typical huge key ring on his belt loop was like a homing beacon to all of his employees and the guests as he jingled and jangled walking down the halls of the hotels. With Mike’s passion for custom pocket knives, he took the idea of a folding knife and applied it to his key problem. This quickly caught on with the other employees, and Mike found him self working several hours a night making KeyBars. He soon realized that outsourcing the manufacturing and quitting his job was the right decision. Fast forward just a few years, and Mike was able to bring all of the manufacturing back in house as he purchased machines and taught himself how to code CNC Mills and laser machines. This in house production meant not only could they control quality at a higher lever, but also make changes and improvements to the product in real time. This is quite a different business model than most of the “easy” e-commerce, drop shipper businesses people come to expect with outsourced manufacturing. Hear all about KeyBar’s story and a ton more on this Episode of the Beav Brodie Podcast

Ep. 008 - Amy Tucker of Salty Britches

“Necessity is the mother of invention”. We have all heard a form of that phrase at some point. Amy Tucker is literally the mother that invented a product out of necessity. Her brand, Salty Britches, was formed so that her son’s skin irritations from swimming in the ocean no longer ruined their family vacations to the beach. After exhausting all of the available creams and ointments, non of which could stand up in the heat and salt water of summer beach trips, Amy knew she would have to create something specific for her son. With her background as a chemist, Salty Britches was formulated in her home kitchen. Word got out about this amazing ointment in Amy’s small town, and quickly became a massive hit locally. After 3 years of family and friends using the home brew cream, the Salty Britches brand was officially launched in 2017 as demand grew. As you could imagine, going from a home kitchen and small batches, to a national brand caused a lot of growing pains. The first step was out sourcing manufacturing of the proprietary blend of ingredients, then packaging and distribution. Asking for help was the best thing they could do, finding specialists and networking accelerated the process and allowed Amy to focus on selling the product and organizing the business, instead of manufacturing it herself at home. Amy and her husband went all in on this new adventure, expanding their brand into many genres, including surfing, extreme athletes, marathon runners and even now in the Military and special forces arena. The next step now is scaling the social media and website side to support the growth that Salty Britches has seen organically. Beav answers many of Amy’s questions about social media marketing, using influencers, web site advancements, email campaigns, and a ton more. So much good information in this podcast, anyone wanting to start a new brand or grow an existing one will learn something. Episode 008 of the Beav Brodie Podcast is one you won’t want to miss!
