In today's show, Kenny and Del review the 2021 western sleeper film Old Henry. What happened to the western genre? Westerns are as old as Hollywood itself and have had it's era of dominating theater tickets sales and Television. But since the 90s, westerns have had a significantly reduced presence with most of them not having a theatrical window. The last block buster Western was 2016s The Magnificent Seven that despite starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt could not double its $90 million dollar investment. The Magnificent Seven served as a marker that the block buster western has rode off into the sunset. Despite big studios not investing $100 million dollars in a western film, the western has found a home as a streamer. Several recent westerns have performed extremely well on streamers with 2021s The Harder They Fall accounting for 1.2 billion minutes of viewing in its first week exclusively on Netflix. It seemed that folks still loved westerns, but not enough to go to the theaters. But for those westerns that have not found their way onto streamer platforms like Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, etc, they get little fanfare and are relegated to word of mouth to boost their performance as a digital rental or purchase. Today, we are featuring a western that had received numerous accolades from critics and fans, but is only available for digital rental or purchase where it has performed very well. Made by a relatively new writer/director and starring a long time character actor in his first feature film lead role, it's unfortunate that the average cinephile hasn't given this movie a chance. Perhaps today we can peak your interest in this unsung western. In this show, we do more than a movie review by delving into the lives of the cast and crew, fan theories, trivia, scene breakdowns, and anything related to the film itself. Needless to say, our shows are a little longer than your average movie review show, but we can assure you that our shows are jam packed with entertaining and interesting discussions. If that sounds like your sort of bag, hang out with Kenny and Del as they get into Old Henry.Extras:Hotcorn Interview w Tim Blake Nelson - https://youtu.be/sdFn-WBKVfsThanks for listening and feel free to hit us up on any of our social media platforms!https://linktr.ee/BiAPodcastTheme song "Loli'ana" written and performed by award-winning musician Kamuela Kahoano. In today's show, Kenny and Del review the 2021 Edgar Wright film Last Night in Soho. Writer and director Edgar Wright's obsession with the psychedelic 60s, which began at an early age and proved to be a labor of love, is used to tell the story of Eloise who falls asleep in the present and wakes up in the body of a woman named Sandie who lived in the same neighborhood of Soho, London in the 1960s. Eloise witnesses her love of the past come to life as she experiences Sandie's adventures. However, not all is as it seems as Sandie's life takes a nightmarish turn for the worse. Eloise tries to escape her dreams, but her dreams begin to haunt her even while she is awake. Today's show is a discussion about the future of theater movies with film critic Aron Medeiros. Aron is a film critic for MauiWatch.com, a member of the Hawai'i Film Critic's Society, a commentator on Nerdwatch Podcast, and in general a self proclaimed Film Buff. Aron joins Kenny and Del to discuss what is the future of the theater movie and why. The COVID pandemic caused theaters to close their doors in March of 2020. As a result, a lot of studio films, films made by Disney, Warner Bros, Paramount, etc, were pushed back or withheld, or worse yet, released during the pandemic and left to chance. The big studios that spend tens or hundreds of millions of dollars didn't want their hopeful cash cows to rake in a paultry few million bucks in the box office when in normal times they could count on breaking even or tripling their investment despite their movie not being all that good.As a result, of lack luster box office performance during 2021, Ben Affleck commented on his belief that the theater movie will be only profitable for event films like Marvel and Stars or franchise films with long continuing stories like Scream, Halloween, Indiana Jones, etc. He further commented that even his film Argo (2012) would not perform well in the theaters today. This prompted the conversation recorded in today's show. What is the theater movie going to look like in 2022? What is the theater movie beyond 2022? Will we ever see another box office success indie like Paranormal Activity? Will studios spend $100 million dollars on comedy or drama if they are destined for streamers? In this episode, hosts Kevin Palmieri and Alan Lazaros talk with the retired mixed martial artist Kenny Florian about his fighting in the UFC and how it changed his life. He also shared the lessons he learned from his life experiences, his fights, his relationship with discipline, his near-death experience, and everything in between. You are surely going to be inspired so make sure you tune in. Kenny's athletic roots are in soccer, where he would play at Boston College. Though soccer was his first love, he eventually found himself in a gym training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). This transition from soccer to BJJ, and mixed martial arts as a whole, transformed his life.Kenny received his BJJ Blackbelt in 5 years from Roberto Maia. After winning multiple BJJ and grappling tournaments, he went on to compete against some of the best fighters in the emerging sport of MMA.His gas tank never approached Empty. Kenny's footwork was as remarkable as his razor elbows. These skills, Florian says, can be attributed to his time playing soccer. Though he was fighting above his best weight and pushing thirty years old, Florian performed exceptionally well. In 2021, Kenny was named as a color commentator for the Professional Fighters League, which is the first MMA organization in which individual athletes compete in a regular season, post-season and championship. The PFL is broadcast in 160 countries.Kenny's analytical skills are also showcased on Discovery's highly rated BattleBots series.
