In today's show, Kenny and Del review the 2021 western sleeper film Old Henry. What happened to the western genre? Westerns are as old as Hollywood itself and have had it's era of dominating theater tickets sales and Television. But since the 90s, westerns have had a significantly reduced presence with most of them not having a theatrical window. The last block buster Western was 2016s The Magnificent Seven that despite starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt could not double its $90 million dollar investment. The Magnificent Seven served as a marker that the block buster western has rode off into the sunset. Despite big studios not investing $100 million dollars in a western film, the western has found a home as a streamer. Several recent westerns have performed extremely well on streamers with 2021s The Harder They Fall accounting for 1.2 billion minutes of viewing in its first week exclusively on Netflix. It seemed that folks still loved westerns, but not enough to go to the theaters. But for those westerns that have not found their way onto streamer platforms like Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, etc, they get little fanfare and are relegated to word of mouth to boost their performance as a digital rental or purchase. Today, we are featuring a western that had received numerous accolades from critics and fans, but is only available for digital rental or purchase where it has performed very well. Made by a relatively new writer/director and starring a long time character actor in his first feature film lead role, it's unfortunate that the average cinephile hasn't given this movie a chance. Perhaps today we can peak your interest in this unsung western. In this show, we do more than a movie review by delving into the lives of the cast and crew, fan theories, trivia, scene breakdowns, and anything related to the film itself. Needless to say, our shows are a little longer than your average movie review show, but we can assure you that our shows are jam packed with entertaining and interesting discussions. In today's show, Kenny and Del review the 2021 Edgar Wright film Last Night in Soho. Writer and director Edgar Wright's obsession with the psychedelic 60s, which began at an early age and proved to be a labor of love, is used to tell the story of Eloise who falls asleep in the present and wakes up in the body of a woman named Sandie who lived in the same neighborhood of Soho, London in the 1960s. Eloise witnesses her love of the past come to life as she experiences Sandie's adventures. However, not all is as it seems as Sandie's life takes a nightmarish turn for the worse. Eloise tries to escape her dreams, but her dreams begin to haunt her even while she is awake. Today's show is a discussion about the future of theater movies with film critic Aron Medeiros. Aron is a film critic for MauiWatch.com, a member of the Hawai'i Film Critic's Society, a commentator on Nerdwatch Podcast, and in general a self proclaimed Film Buff. Aron joins Kenny and Del to discuss what is the future of the theater movie and why. The COVID pandemic caused theaters to close their doors in March of 2020. As a result, a lot of studio films, films made by Disney, Warner Bros, Paramount, etc, were pushed back or withheld, or worse yet, released during the pandemic and left to chance. The big studios that spend tens or hundreds of millions of dollars didn't want their hopeful cash cows to rake in a paultry few million bucks in the box office when in normal times they could count on breaking even or tripling their investment despite their movie not being all that good.As a result, of lack luster box office performance during 2021, Ben Affleck commented on his belief that the theater movie will be only profitable for event films like Marvel and Stars or franchise films with long continuing stories like Scream, Halloween, Indiana Jones, etc. He further commented that even his film Argo (2012) would not perform well in the theaters today. This prompted the conversation recorded in today's show. What is the theater movie going to look like in 2022? What is the theater movie beyond 2022? Will we ever see another box office success indie like Paranormal Activity? Will studios spend $100 million dollars on comedy or drama if they are destined for streamers?
