Behind the Rails of Purdue Football

What an incredible game in Nashville. Purdue pulled out a dramatic 48-45 overtime win over Tennessee to win the Music City Bowl despite being down several front line starters. It clinched a 9-4 season, the first nine-win season in 18 years, and gave the Boilers a boost a momentum headed into 2022. The Behind the Rails Podcast is back to discuss this win, and there was a lot ot talk bout: Was that a touchdown by Tennessee in overtime, as Kory chimes in from the perspective of a running back. How does one guy who hasn't played much encourage others to step up in such a big way? What does a 9-4 season mean for the program? How do things look going into 2022 with a wealth of options returning? This will be our final episode for a while, at least until the spring game and draft time, so thanks for listening to the first season.

It's bowl game time! We've have been off for a bit here at the Behind the Rails podcast, but Purdue's bowl game match with Tennessee is just a few short weeks away and it is our last taste of Purdue football until the spring. The Boilers are going for their first nine win season since 2003, a tremendous accomplishment given he last few seasons. In their way is a strong Tennessee Volunteers team that will be a formidable challenge, especially given the recent NFL Draft news. Among the topics discussed: What is bowl game prep like? What is the actual bowl trip like for the players? How does the announcement that David Bell and George Karlaftis will opt out affect Purdue' plans? It's bowl season! Purdue is fresh off of its 44-7 drubbing of Indiana to bring the Old Oaken Bucket back to West Lafayette, and it will still have another game to play for. The Boilers have eight wins for the first time since 2007 and are going for a ninth win, something that has not happened since 2003. We're off to a bowl game, so there is a lot for Kory and myself to discuss, including: Where will Purdue go? It seems like the top two possible destinations are Las Vegas or New York. What are David Bell and George Karlaftis going to do? (Hint: Likely not stay in West Lafayette). What is bowl prep like? How do the guys spend their per dime at bowl games? Is it better to sneak across the border to Juarez or Windsor since Kory went to bowls in El Paso and Detroit. I hope you enjoy!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Since it is a short week and because I got back from Chicago late on Sunday night we only have one episode this week, but it will cover both the Northwestern win up at Wrigley Field and this weekend's preview of Indiana. Among the highlights: Kory talks about the difference between baseball grass and football grass, thus explaining some of the turf issues from Saturday. We talk about how Milton Wright had his breakout game because of all he attention David Bell got. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good in reference to the accidental onside kick. When Purdue lost the Bucket in 2007 for the first time in six tries Kory was pissed as part of that team. Be warned: Not much respect is paid to this year's Indiana team, who is bad. We will be back early next week with an Indiana recap and some overall thoughts on the season.

We're roughly 48 hours out from Purdue football taking the field in a Major League Baseball Stadium since October 18, 1947 when it defeated Boston University 62-7 at Fenway Park. Because of the bowl tie-ins it could be merely the first time this year, as the conference has bowl tie-ins with the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium and the Guaranteed Rate Bowl at the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks (never mind that Guaranteed Rate Field is the White Sox home, but as usual the White Sox don't count). That gave us a lot to talk about in this latest edition of the Behind the Rails Podcast with Kory Sheets. Kory and I discuss a lot of the struggles of Northwestern's offense and how Purdue's defense should be able to bounce back after getting blasted by a very good Ohio State team. We also discuss the value of Chicago hot dogs, so enjoy.
