In this episode of The Green Grind, LeRoy and Kory sit down with industry icon Marty Grunder, CEO of Grunder Landscaping and president of The Grow Group, to tackle one of the biggest challenges in the green industry: why most companies never break past $1–2 million—and what it really takes to scale beyond it. Marty shares decades of hard-earned lessons from building a respected multi-million-dollar company, hitting long plateaus, and ultimately breaking through by getting out of his own way. The conversation dives deep into the uncomfortable truth that owners are often the bottleneck, and growth requires letting go, trusting people, and running toward the "non-sexy" parts of the business.
WORT 89.9FM Madison · One Man Stalled Healthcare Expansion for New Moms Currently, Wisconsin and Arkansas are the only two states that have not expanded healthcare coverage for new moms. On today's show, host Dana Pellebon speaks with ProPublica reporter, Megan O'Matz, about her investigation into Robin Vos's rejection of postpartum Medicaid expansion in Wisconsin. Even though there is bipartisan support in the Wisconsin legislature to expand Medicaid coverage for up to a year for low-income new moms, Robin Vos has blocked a bill that would do just that. O'Matz reports that Vos broke with other anti-abortion members of his party and that this decision is timed with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. She calls it hypocritical not to give new moms healthcare past two months and claim you're “pro-life” because the early months after birth are a vulnerable period when parents often need ongoing medication and treatment. O'Matz also tracks the influence of business interests on Vos's decision, including the Uihlein family's financial contributions to the Republican Assembly Campaign Committee. They also talk about O'Matz's most recent article on Sen. Ron Johnson's support of a discredited Wisconsin doctor whose new book on chlorine dioxide–a bleaching agent used as a disinfectant and deodorizer–spreads misinformation. Sen. Johnson has written a blurb on the book's dust jacket and has joined the doctor on panels on vaccine skepticism even though chlorine dioxide is not a drug or a medicine approved for therapeutic use. O'Matz says that we're in a place where people don't trust the CDC and that studies cited in Dr. Kory's book are not scientifically rigorous. O'Matz says that she got her start in Florida, where open records laws support journalists' work of keeping elected officials accountable. However the newspaper industry has been contracting over the years due to influence from media conglomerates. She's now with ProPublica, a nonprofit, independent newsroom that seeks to deliver a level of accountability to readers by reporting on how people with power use it. They rely on open records, data, and fact checking to foster reader trust. Megan O'Matz is a ProPublica reporter covering issues in Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest. She has been with ProPublica since 2021 and writes about voting processes in Wisconsin, a swing state, as well as stories about family court, prosecutorial blunders and predatory lending. She has also worked at the South Florida Sun Sentinel. She and her colleagues were finalists for the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for stories about widespread fraud in federal disaster aid programs after a series of devastating hurricanes. She also shared in the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for reporting on the failures of school administrators and police officers in connection with the Parkland school shooting. Olivia Kory, Chief Strategy Officer from Haus, walks through an 18-month review of 640 incrementality tests run by Haus to compare Meta's Advantage+ campaigns with manual setups. She explains the shift from hands-on targeting to AI-led buying, why incrementality matters more than platform-reported conversions, and how Geolift holdouts estimate true lift without user-level data. The results show a strong overall impact from Meta, but mixed performance from Advantage+ versus manual, along with signs that mid-funnel optimization can change outcomes. She ends with practical cautions on interpreting automation results and the need to test by brand. Takeaways Incrementality testing helps separate real lift from conversions that would have happened anyway. Meta tends to deliver measurable lift quickly, though attribution settings change what you see. Advantage+ performs inconsistently against manual campaigns and can skew toward low funnel intent. Mid-funnel signal engineering may broaden reach and improve omnichannel effects, but needs validation. Chapters 00:00 Overview of the research question on AI buying and outcomes. 03:10 How Meta buying moved from manual controls to automated setups. 06:05 Why incrementality matters more than reported conversions. 09:00 Geolift holdout method and cross-channel measurement. 12:10 What the wider Meta test set shows about lift and timing. 16:05 Advantage+ versus manual results and efficiency gaps. 19:20 Possible reasons for the Advantage+ pattern and open questions. 21:10 Signal engineering and mid-funnel optimization approach. 24:20 Final cautions and how to apply testing to your own brand. Kory and Ben are back with another postgame podcast from Ford Field. The guys discuss Detroit's 44-30 win over the Dallas Cowboys and what it means for their playoff hopes and the path forward. Amon-Ra St. Brown played through his ankle injury, and he was joined by Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs and Jameson Williams in having very big days. Detroit's defense got beat up some, but five sacks, three forced fumbles and two interceptions helped save the day. #315. Now that the youngster is on vacation, Kory and Kendall can talk about backs, shoulders, and knees acting up. AI can't yet give us newer versions of ourselves, but it sure can give new life to old music! Or perhaps you prefer good old fashioned creativity, such as Kory's kid's well-crafted Christmas lists. Sometimes all your child wants is a hug, and if you only knew the joy that would follow, you'd act on it sooner, like the actors in TV and film should. Speaking of wanting things sooner, we hate that getting “parked” at the drive-thru makes the company look good while taking more of your time. Black Friday isn't Black Friday anymore, Ohio State wins (finally), Formula 1 is heating up at the right time, Frankenstein is good, and Stranger Things is trying a new marketing tactic. Shane brings an unfiltered, brutally honest look into what it takes to survive, rebuild, and scale in the lawn and landscape industry when life hits hard. It's been a busy week in Lions world. They lost a tough one to the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving, with their playoff hopes taking a big-time hit. Frank Ragnow unretired but then failed his physical and won't re-join the team, after all. Kory and Ben open the mailbag for questions this week in another jam-packed episode. This sermon explores a faith that eagerly anticipates Christ's second coming. Drawing from Romans 8 and the story of Mary and the Angel Gabriel, Kory challenges the notion of unconditional grace, stating that God's gifts, like hope, are not charity but an invitation to a covenant relationship. He calls believers to be active carriers of hope in a groaning world. This requires resisting the temptations of despair and desperation and instead embracing the confidence that God is working all present suffering for good.
Kory and Ben discuss Detroit's 31-24 loss to the Green Bay Packers and what it means for the NFC North and its playoff hopes. Frank Ragnow ended his retirement after about six months, and his return can't come soon enough for a Lions team all of a sudden fighting for their lives at 7-5. Learn more about your ad choices. How can we ensure that a young firefighter becomes an old firefighter! an informative conversation and as always the best laid plans of me and my guests was beautifully derailed by the awesome question from the Scrap audience.
In the final installment of the Scaling Smart Series, Kory and LeRoy dive deep into two pillars that determine whether a company grows with intention—or stays stuck: culture and building like a builder instead of hustling. They unpack the realities of culture at every stage of business, reminding listeners that culture isn't something you create once you have 10–20 employees—it starts with your first hire. From shifting language from "employees" to "team members" to modeling the standards you expect, they break down how small leadership actions (and inactions) ripple across morale, behavior, and performance inside a company.
Ben and Kory try to make sense of what just happened. But the guys do their best after Detroit's 34-27 overtime win against the New York Giants. Gibbs went off, and then some, and the defense managed to make big stops when it mattered most. Next up are the Packers on Thanksgiving. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Kory and LeRoy are back with Part Three of the Scaling Smart Series, diving into what it really takes to scale a company with discipline, consistency, and mature leadership. They break down how owners evolve from reacting to everything that goes wrong… to staying calm, solving problems, and leading with intention. This episode covers the routines and habits that create real growth—showing up for your team, running consistent meetings, staying disciplined with cash flow, and sticking to the processes that built your business in the first place. If you're ready to move from hustling to building and create a business that grows without chaos, this one's packed with lessons you can put to work immediately.

It was a night to forget for Jared Goff, Dan Campbell, and the Lions offense in general. #313. How warm to you keep your house this time of year? November in Ohio brings two things: some freezing cold temps making you worry about whether or not you disconnected your garden hoses, and a lack of guarantee that you're finished mowing for the year. With that comes the somewhat contentious question of who gets to control the thermostat in the house and car. We talk about that. Perhaps being more comfortable in your car helps you deal with inconsiderate drivers. But you know us better than that. Kory and LeRoy kick off the brand-new Scaling Smart Series — a 4-part deep dive into what it really takes to grow and scale a green industry business the right way. In this first episode, they sit down for a no-fluff, straight-talk conversation about building the foundation for sustainable growth. From defining a clear vision to living by your company's core values, they break down why so many business owners stay stuck at the same size year after year—and what separates those who scale with purpose. The guys share real stories from their own journeys—mistakes, mindset shifts, and tough leadership calls that shaped their success. Whether it's hiring the right people, enforcing accountability, or letting go of those who can't grow with you, this episode hits hard on leadership, culture, and vision. This is just the start of the Scaling Smart Series—four powerful episodes designed to help you grow smarter, lead better, and build a business that lasts.

#309. Someone call Will Smith just in case we need someone to slap around the invading robots. We might not see them much where we live, but we know they're out there and we have thoughts. But maybe they could make an emergency Halloween candy run for those of us with self-emptying bowls. Or dress one up in a gentleman suit to teach some of us how to treat a lady. Also, Kory joins in on the sports conversation with an historic baseball game and to ask what's up with James Franklin at Penn State losing his job? Finally we play a silly game about silly state laws and we cover a bit of streaming. Chime in via the LinkTree below, and until next time, be kind to each other.
