An improvised musical featuring queer stories by queer storytellers. Each episode we chat with a queer artist, then perform a completely made-up, unscripted, unrehearsed musical based on the experiences they shared. New episodes every other Friday.
A long time coming, we know. We apologize for the delay as COVID caused quite a setback for a lot of us artists. In this episode, we have monologist CB (referred to by former name in this ep) who also happens to be the producer writing this and doesn't love to write about themselves because they are afraid it will sound egotistical and they are already a leo so you can't get more narcissistic than that. They share fun story about their second date curse and then the narrative unfolds as the cast journeys into our main character's struggle with people pleasing and holding back their love language of gift giving. Will they hold back or find balance.
For February's episode, we chat with the wonderful improviser Tess Forneris. She opens up about her coming out journey, the joys of technical improv, being a nanny, and why advertising is exactly like the show Mad Men. Then, wouldn't you know it... we somehow take all of that heartfelt conversation and turn it into a whacky improvised musical with unrelentingly good duets! Follow the tale of nanny Clairee and her charge, 10 month-old Jeremy, as they take on life's mysteries. And in case you're wondering what life's mysteries are, it's just universal, normal stuff, like parents getting divorced because of financial guru Suze Orman, how to use parrots in an advertising campaign, performance reviews for babies, and the joys of gnawing on solid food! This episode of the Big Gay Musical Podcast features the improvisational talent of: Chelsea Beth, Bridget Brewer, Casey Marie, and Trent Thomson. The Big Gay Musical Podcast is produced by Tosin Awofeso, Chelsea Beth, Marissa Macy, and Ammon Taylor. Beautiful Piano Sounds by Ammon Taylor.
It's a new year, and we're still here and queer! Back from our hiatus, we sit down with Emmet Hunker, an Austin-based comedian and the producer of the queer comedy show, Thee Gay Agenda. Emmet chats about the genesis of their show and navigating the comedy scene as a queer person. And because we love to get off-topic, we also chat a bit about butts, giant pens, and European Tinder Dates. Then, join us for the never-before-heard musical, The Original Shoe Plan. To make way for the world's longest strip mall, Molly and her partner Patricia's longtime home is set to be demolished! And everyone is going to sing about it! Join us for silent explosions, walkie-talkie humor, tender duets, and a really insane plot point involving a bunch of shoes! Catch Emmet's show, Thee Gay Agenda, every month at The North Door in Austin, TX. It's always a hilarious, magical, wild-ride. https://www.theegayagenda.com/ The Big Gay Musical Podcast is produced by Tosin Awofeso, Chelsea Beth, Marissa Macy, and Ammon Taylor. For September’s episode, we chat with the multi-talented Mia Cisco. She tells us a thing or two about the importance of bees, how weightlifting has empowered her, and the joys of sketch comedy. Prepare to be inspired, y'all! Then, wouldn’t you know... a coming-of-age musical about an orphan named Buck who is half-bee, half-human! Listen along as Buck simultaneously navigates the woes of middle school and having to be the one true savior of the bees! If that’s not relatable, then I don’t know what to tell you. See Mia in The Haunting of Hell Hell: Sketch Comedy for the Dead and Dying (October at The Fallout Theater) or in The Black Vault: Improvised H.P. Lovecraft (October at The Institution Theater). On this installment of the Big Gay Musical Podcast, we talk with Estrella Salanda, an Austin-based actor, dancer, and secret yogurt enthusiast. She discusses her love of movement, her very interesting day job, and some of her most recent work. Then, join us... for a musical that sounds an awful lot like the dairy industry paid us to do a gay ad for them! And while unfortunately for our wallets, that's not the case, this musical is full of cows, woodland creatures, CIA conspiracies, gay marriages, and harmonies like you've never heard before. The Big Gay Musical Podcast is produced by Tosin Awofeso, Chelsea Beth, Bridget Brewer, Marissa Macy and Ammon Taylor Musical Direction by Ammon Taylor This episode features the improvisational talent of: Chelsea Beth, Luke Wallens, Marissa Macy and Jaukeem Jaydoire Balcom
On this installment of BGM, we sit down with the marvelous artist and performer Indigo Rael! We chat about her alter ego, Polly Mermaid, making art out of trash, and occupying the spaces in between (oh hey, bisexuality)! Then, get ready for some of our signature zaniness in a musical all about... possums?! Sun and Moon are two trash loving critters who are domesticated by a well-meaning suburban couple, which can only mean one thing... songs about trash, friendship, hammers, nails and being a bringer of death. But most importantly, we somehow make the whole musical a metaphor for bisexuality! Catch Indigo in her show American Blood: A Puppet Bloodretta of the Donner Party at The Vortex this August! She chats about being queer in the tech world, moving to Austin without knowing anybody, and being in a relationship with another woman who has long hair (it confuses the straights)! Then, we head over to a DMV/Grocery Store hybrid, an unlikely setting for a queer romance! Did you know that you can get an expedited government ID if you jump into a mirror, go on a magical adventure and face your demons?? Tune in for shapeshifting gumdrops, a deviated septum, and a puberty song titled, “Hair, Nipple, Whitehead!” See Gabriela and her partner perform in their new duo, Hourglass, which focuses on telling relationship stories from queer perspectives. It’s our tenth episode and what better way to celebrate than by talking to local heartthrob Cass Gutierrez! Coincidentally, Cass and one of our producers go WAY back… as in... they used to be fellow baristas when they were sexually confused teens. Cass discusses being queer in the navy, moving back to Austin following a divorce, her wonderful new girlfriend, and why Starbucks can be a hot, hot place. We don’t want to spoil the juicy twists and turns of the musical portion, so just know that it features a one-person duet, a naval ship, BDSM-inspired consent, and baristas with big dreams! See Cass's show, Queering The Sequel, this August at the Hideout Theatre. It's all about making movie sequels that are... gayer! Then, if you wished musicals like “Little Shop of Horrors” were more queer, then do we have a show for you! Guinevere, who works at the local nursery, gets roped into the evil plans of two food manufacturers! She navigates love, food shortages, villain songs, and… Arnold Palmer?! Then, we hear an improvised musical about Tiff, who very quickly and optimistically moves up the ranks of a certain legendary media corporation. If you like reimagined historical figures, queer sea animals, overly dramatic prophecies, and songs about grapes, then BOY HOWDY, DO WE HAVE A SHOW FOR YOU! He chats about what it was like leaving Mormonism, the experience of doing full Victorian, sister-wife drag and dating people who are still religious. Then, Ammon runs back behind the keyboard for a musical extravaganza all about leaning on religion, facing our pasts, and sassy coffee tables! Also, talking furniture is now queer canon. On this week’s episode, we talk to the magnificent Sophia Poitier: a creative, a thinker, a parent, a performer, a badass genderqueer visionary. Sophia shares her thoughts about alien-inspired gender expression, being a queer parent, how much people love to “mom” you, and even a few nuggets on navigating the healthcare system (hint: it sucks)! Then woah nelly… stay tuned for an improvised musical about a teenager named Amelia and her personified body as they traverse an alien world, take a ride on a literal struggle bus, and step into the reflection zone. Grab your box of tissues, because we’re bringing you the full spectrum of emotion via equal parts goofy UFO jokes and heart-wrenching duets about loving yourself and your body. Watch Sophia perform in The Hideout Theatre’s Dystopian Teen Future, Saturdays in June! On this week’s episode, we chat with Liza Dovgish, an improviser and comedian in Austin, TX. Liza digs into what it was like to be born in Russia, to grow up in South Korea until she was thirteen, then to be flung into American suburbia -- complete with hamburgers, hugs, and skate park kids! Then, get ready for a whacky improvised musical about the “New Kid” in Talkstown: the town where everything talks. It turns out there’s a lot to learn from chatty soda machines and outspoken department stores! When New Kid makes friends with the old new kid, he has to learn to accept himself and how to make the best of his new home. On this week’s episode, we talk with Paul Weiner, an Austin-based stand-up comedian, improviser and theatre actor! Paul shares his early love of The Rolling Stones, being a queer parent and cab driver in San Francisco, and his grandmother’s wisdom. Then, wipe away that single tear, because here comes a goofy, completely improvised musical about Cassidy, a misguided trauma-unit worker who just wants to impress her boss. But woah, hold up, does her boss have motives outside of being a good doctor? And are those motives somehow related to the demise of department stores by the hands of millennials? Hold on to your britches, y’all! The Big Gay Musical Podcast is produced by Tosin Awofeso, Chelsea Beth, Bridget Brewer, Marissa Macy and Ammon Taylor. Caeriel talks about what it was like to come out during high school in the nineties, Linda Carter as Wonder Woman, why he has “PLAY” tattooed to his arm, and getting COZY at a pumpkin party. Then, gear up for a HOT HOT HOT improvised musical about two queer teachers from different schools, Diana and Mary. Will they come together? What is the deal with this evil principle, and why does he have an old-timey accent? Can everyone talk to squirrels or is it just people who believe in love? Also, some outrageously catchy musical numbers, including a song about how TEACHERS ARE PEOPLE, TOO! It’s the bop we’ve always needed. Then, off we go to the magical desert land of Marfa, TX for a fully-improvised musical extravaganza about Christine, a new woman in town looking for love! What will happen when she meets a ghost with the same name as her? What’s the deal with the grumpy, wiccan pizza place owner? Can cacti really will anything to happen, like a genie?
