In this episode of Mormon Stories, John and Margi Dehlin sit down with Sharon Beesley, a therapist, writer and former Mormon “mommy blogger,” to explore the evolution of her faith journey in Mormonism.Sharon was brought into the church as a child in Florida when her mother chose to convert. She discusses the warmth and community she found in her ward there, and the early testimonies that grounded her. Yet her story also weaves through deep loss with the death of her mother, and how that grief initially drew her closer to the Church.Sharon attended BYU, got married, and set out to live the ideal Mormon lifestyle. Their family ultimately ended up in New York city, where Sharon began to find relationships with people outside the church. With this move, her worldview began to shift as she encountered new ideas about faith, feminism, and authenticity.Topics Include:-Growing up Mormon in Florida-Coping with grief through faith-Marriage, motherhood, and mixed-faith relationshipsFeminismThis episode offers a gentle, wise, and grounding perspective for anyone navigating faith transitions, loss, or rediscovering joy beyond belief.___________________YouTubeAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. Guiding Question: What do you really believe about eternity—and is that your final answer? Key Takeaways: Faith Decisions Shape Everything: Robert Lewis opens with the bold claim that faith decisions are the most important decisions a man will ever make. Everyone lives by some assumption about eternity—even choosing not to believe is, itself, a belief system. These beliefs influence our daily actions more than we realize. The Sacred Ground of the Mind: Continuing a theme from earlier sessions, Lewis calls this internal space of reflection “sacred ground.” It's where men weigh their end, envision eternity, and measure today's choices in light of that vision. Everyone Lives by One of Four Views: Nobody sees and nobody cares. Somebody sees, but it doesn't matter. Somebody sees and is keeping score. Somebody sees and wants to help. These views are not just abstract—they shape how men live, lead, and make decisions today. Comparison of Major World Religions: Lewis walks through what major world religions teach about the afterlife—Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Mormonism—and notes they all share one common element: earning heaven through good works. Christianity stands apart by offering a relationship with a Savior who offers help, not a checklist. Robert Lewis's Personal Journey: He vulnerably shares his own story—growing up in a chaotic home, experiencing inner turmoil in college, and ultimately reaching for Christ at age 18. That decision reshaped both his present and eternal life. The Two Circles Illustration: Lewis explains his theology using two circles: Top Circle – What Jesus Christ has done for me: Forgiveness of sins Eternal life Adoption as a child of God Bottom Circle – What Jesus Christ desires to do in me: Abundant life Good works Loving others well The top circle guarantees salvation (unchangeable), while the bottom circle reflects daily discipleship (changeable and rewardable). Eternal Impact of Daily Choices: While salvation is secured through faith in Christ, rewards in heaven are determined by how faithfully we walk with Him. Lewis emphasizes this doesn't determine if you get in, but it shapes how you live there. A: It's over. B: It's not over, and everyone will be fine. C: It's not over, and I'm good enough. D: It's not over, and I'll need help. Final Challenge: “Is That Your Final Answer?” Echoing Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Lewis asks each listener to confront their deepest belief about eternity. Options: Key Scripture References: Colossians 2:13–14 – Forgiveness of sins. 1 John 5:11–13 – Assurance of eternal life. John 1:12 – Becoming a child of God. John 10:10 – “I came that they may have life...” Ephesians 2:10 – Created for good works. John 15:12 – Loving others as Christ has loved. Philippians 3:20–21 – Citizenship in heaven and transformed bodies. 1 Corinthians 3:10–15 – Eternal rewards and loss.
In John 14:6, Jesus declares, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” This message explores the exclusive claim of Christ against the backdrop of world religions and modern pluralism. Every faith system—Islam, Mormonism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Judaism—offers a different path to salvation, yet Scripture makes clear there is only one way to the Father.Through this passage, we see: Jesus as the Way — the bridge between sinful humanity and a holy God. Jesus as the Truth — the full revelation of who God is and what is real. Jesus as the Life — the only source of spiritual life and eternal assurance. This sermon exposes the insufficiency of man's religion and the finality of Christ's work on the cross. There are not many ways to God—there is one, and His name is Jesus.
In this episode, we welcome Brit Hartley, an atheist spiritual director, to discuss her personal journey of deconstructing from Mormonism and religion at large. Brit shares her upbringing in a loving Mormon community, the cognitive dissonance she experienced as a teenager, and the pivotal moments that led to her faith crisis and eventual atheism. The conversation explores the challenges of losing faith, rebuilding identity and meaning, and the importance of love, authenticity, and human connection beyond religious dogma. Brit and Leslie also discuss the complexities of maintaining relationships with religious family members, the benefits and shortcomings of religion, and Brit's work in helping others find spiritual tools without belief requirements. A key figure who accelerated the historical crisis for both the Tanners (who left the group in 1962) and Pauline's church was Wes Walters, a Presbyterian minister from Marissa, Illinois. Walters was asked to write an article on Mormons for Christianity Today. His detailed research focused on testing Joseph Smith's claims against tangible historical records, particularly those surrounding the First Vision. Walters reasoned that while you couldn't prove whether Smith spoke to God, you could prove whether he was standing in a given place on a given day. https://youtu.be/gPDG7CA9n-0 Don't miss our other conversations with Sandra: https://gospeltangents.com/people/sandra-tanner Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved Walters used his expertise in church history (specifically Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian records in the New York area) to investigate Joseph Smith's claim that the First Vision was prompted by an intense local revival where ministers were fighting over converts. Walters' findings: the great revival and the subsequent fighting over converts among the denominations did not happen in 1820. Instead, significant church growth (hundreds of converts) occurred between 1823, 1824, and 1825. This discovery forced a complete recalibration of the chronology, as it meant the First Vision and the subsequent Moroni visits leading up to the plates could not logically fit the existing timeline. Walters' small pamphlet, New Light on Mormon Origins, caused such a disruption that it "threw the Mormon Church into a tizzy," forcing LDS historians to travel back East to conduct their own major studies. Walters is credited by Sandra Tanner as being a key factor in pushing the LDS Church into serious historical scholarship. Magic Connection: A Bridge Too Far While Walters' dating research was shocking, his discovery of the 1826 trial documents cemented the crisis. Pauline's group, following David Whitmer, already accepted the story that Joseph Smith used a "rock" in his "hat" to translate the Book of Mormon, aligning with the "seer stone" narrative. However, the 1826 trial confirmed Joseph Smith's involvement in money digging, associating the seer stone with divination and magic practices—the occult that the Christians in Pauline's group firmly rejected. The group found this connection irreconcilable: They questioned why God would use an instrument associated with magic. They noted that Joseph Smith seemed to bypass the instruments God allegedly supplied (the plates) and continued using the same rock used in divination. The transition from seeking treasure (magic) to seeking revelation (religion) looked too "fishy," suggesting it was merely a "switching of what you're using this stone for". The fact that the same individuals involved in drawing magic circles and searching for treasure were the same first converts to Mormonism was deeply troubling. Pauline Hancock's Church Voted to Disband The Church of Christ (Bible Book of Mormon), founded and led by Pauline Hancock, emerged as a unique splinter group focused on returning to what they believed was "1830 Mormonism"—a faith centered purely on the Bible and the Book of Mormon, devoid of later revelations (like the Doctrine and Covenants past 1830) and "Aaronic, Melchizedek Priesthood ideas". However, this small community, known for meeting in the “Basement church” in Independence, ultimately discovered that even their foundational scripture, the Book of Mormon, could not withstand intense historical scrutiny, leading to its dissolution years after Pauline Hancock's death in 1962. The Vote & Dissolution Faced with this overwhelming historical evidence, the Church of Christ had to make a choice regarding their "litmus test"—the Book of Mormon. In 1972, approximately a decade after Pauline's death (she died in the summer of 1962), the church took a formal vote on whether to retain the Book of Mormon as scriptur...
Sunday, 2 November 2025 So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” Matthew 13:57 “And they stumbled in Him. And Jesus, He said to them, ‘A prophet, he is not dishonored if not in his fatherland and in his house.'” (CG). In the previous verse, the questions about Jesus continued as the people asked about His sisters, wondering how He had obtained His wisdom and mighty working abilities. Because of their confusion, it next says, “And they stumbled in Him.” The meaning is that they were tripped up. Their mental disconnect would not allow them proper understanding of how someone so common and who was a seemingly normal child among them had grown into such a mighty intellect with the ability to accomplish such great things. Their assumption, though faulty, is not uncommon. To them, humble beginnings equated to a humble existence henceforth. Instead of looking at Jesus as a prodigy, they probably looked to Him more as a charlatan or an underhanded opportunist. However, Matthew records Jesus' response to them, “And Jesus, He said to them, ‘A prophet, he is not dishonored.'” A new word, atimos, is seen. It is derived from the negative particle a and the word timé, value. Thus, it extends to honor, esteem, dignity, etc. Jesus' beginning words of His response indicate that prophets are normally honored for their prophetic ability. They stood with kings, were esteemed by the people, and were sought out by all classes of people in times of need. However, there was often a notable exception. Jesus continues with, “if not in his fatherland and in his house.” A prophet who only became a prophet later in life by the call of the Lord could expect to be ignored by those he grew up with and who once interacted with him regularly. People would not understand how someone they knew and hung around with, just a common Joe, could somehow have a special connection to God. This is the intent of Jesus' words, which were probably a proverbial expression concerning such things. Life application: As noted above, the reasoning of the people is commonly faulty. There are innumerable ways people can suddenly excel who seemed to have no special background, potential, or abilities. For example, from time to time, someone may get bumped on the head and suddenly have the ability to do incredible feats in math, memory, invention, etc. A prophet or preacher may have a sudden calling on his life that changes the entire course of his existence. In the case of the latter, faith in God demands that people take stock of such a thing and consider it. Of course, the chances are good that a person is making a false claim about such a religious encounter, but the only way to get to the bottom of that would be to test him, observe his conduct, and check with others who may have intimate knowledge of the situation. However, others may be in on the scam as well. Joseph Smith claimed he had received the Book of Mormon from the angel Moroni. Brigham Young supported him in his false teaching and helped perpetuate and grow Mormonism. So one has to be careful with such things. There is a great example of the thought presented here right in Scripture – “And when Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. And he declared to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.” Acts 9:26, 27 Paul resided in Jerusalem. People there knew of his conduct toward those in the church. After his conversion, his change was a hard sell to those who previously knew him. This is to be expected. However, there is a point when such things need to be accepted as true and valid, like Paul's conversion, or forever rejected, like Joseph Smith's false claims. The evidence behind the claims should be sufficient to make such a determination. Pay attention to such things as you interact with others. Your initial assessment may be wrong. Likewise, your lurking suspicions may be borne out when a false narrative is exposed. Be wise and discerning, and as John admonishes, “test the spirits” (1 John 4:1). O God, we pray for Your hand of protection to surround us from false teachers. At the same time, we pray for discerning minds that can identify them so that we are not led astray by them. There are so many who claim they know the “mysteries” of how things work by You when in fact, they are just making stuff up. Help us to see the truth and keep far from such people. Amen.

In the wake of the Charlie Kirk assassination, Hank Hanegraaff would like to propose an all too relevant question: “Is Mormonism Christian?” Why? Because a prevalent narrative surrounding the assassination of Charlie Kirk in Orem Utah, is that Tyler Robinson, Kirk's alleged assassin, grew up in a good conservative Christian family. In truth, Tyler Robinson was raised in a Mormon family—and Mormonism is hardly Christian. As such, Hanegraaff believes this to be as good a time as any to equip listeners to delineate the differences between Mormonism and Christianity so that we can all be prepared to properly discern and discuss the doctrinal distinctives and the truth regarding what is–and is not–authentic Christianity. With the NBA season just getting started, Jimmy sits down with Utah Jazz legend Thurl “Big T” Bailey for a wide-ranging, heartfelt conversation. Thurl looks back on being the No. 7 pick in 1983, falling in love with Utah and its fans, and the lessons his mom taught him about letting basketball open doors to serve the community. He also relives NC State's iconic 1983 title run with Jimmy V—manifesting by “practicing” cutting down the nets, the game plan against Phi Slama Jama, and why leadership, belief, and defense still win.The conversation turns deeply personal as Thurl shares his journey of faith and conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, meeting his wife, and how their love endured family pushback before ultimately bringing everyone together. Cardon Ellis, Jonah Barnes, Kwaku L., Brad Whitbeck, and Jerry—dives into the intriguing prediction that many ex-Mormons may soon start returning to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The discussion is sparked by a post from the ex-Mormon subreddit, which suggests that “ex-Mormonism” might have peaked as a trend and could now be on the decline. The hosts talk candidly about the cyclical nature of religious commitment and cultural trends. Drawing parallels to historical trends in American religiosity, they propose that just as religious participation dipped and resurged in past decades, so too could LDS Church activity. The resurgence, they suggest, may be influenced by changes in Church leadership, cultural excitement, and generational waves—recalling times when being Mormon was culturally “cool” because of influential figures, music, and media.

Sandra Tanner discusses one of the most intriguing episodes in Mormon history: her early inquiry into the missing 1832 First Vision account. (She didn't know it was missing at the time. The account was allegedly ripped out of the Joseph Smith journal by Church Historian Joseph Fielding Smith. This pursuit led Sandra directly into correspondence with Joseph Fielding Smith, then Church Historian, concerning what she believed was the original, definitive record of Joseph Smith's earliest spiritual experience. https://youtu.be/1pDKtA4RfmE Don't miss our other conversations with Sandra: https://gospeltangents.com/people/sandra-tanner Copyright © 2025 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved 0:00 Tanner's Secret Polygamy 4:57 Sandra's Teen LDS Experiences 19:06 Sandra's Role in Missing First Vision Account? The Path to Critical Inquiry Sandra Tanner's journey into questioning Mormon orthodoxy was significantly shaped by her mother, who was already deep into researching early Mormonism in the late 1950s. Sandra's mother insisted on finding chapter and verse for religious claims, refusing to simply take the word of "the brethren" or rely solely on church manuals, often disrupting Sunday school classes with her inquisitive mind. Sandra's first met Jerald Tanner in the 1950s. He introduced her to David Whitmer's thinking and the ideas of Pauline Hancock's group, the Church of Christ-Bible & Book of Mormon). This set the stage for intense study. A major focal point of this research was the nature of God and how the changing views of God affected the narrative of the First Vision. Sandra noted that the Book of Mormon, in its earliest form, presented a view of God that did not align with the current Mormon understanding of a separate Father and Son. Conflicting First Vision Narratives As Sandra, Jerald, and her mother poured over available documents, they focused on inconsistencies surrounding the First Vision: Fawn Brodie's Observation: The first edition of No Man Knows My History had raised the issue that the earliest references to an experience before the 1823 angel Moroni visitation often seemed to refer only to an angel or messenger, not the Father and Son. The Historical Record Change: Sandra's aunt acquired a copy of Andrew Jensen's Historical Record (from the 1880s), which contained an account where Joseph went into the woods to pray and a "messenger, an angel" appeared to him. However, her aunt's copy was a later reprint (circa 1890 or 1891) that changed the text to say "the Christ appears to him," raising questions about when the shift occurred and why the Father was excluded in that version. Sandra and her associates reasoned that if the First Vision story was constantly evolving, they needed to see the genesis of the account. The Letter & Missing 1832 First Vision Account In the early 1960s (circa 1961), Sandra, Jerald, and her mother formulated a letter outlining these historical questions to be sent to then-Church Historian, Joseph Fielding Smith. Sandra simply assumed that an initial written account must exist and requested a photocopy of the "original Joseph Smith handwritten account of the First Vision". Little did Sandra know that some people, like her friend Lamar Peterson, did know about a "strange account" (the 1832 version) that had been shown to him by Levi Edgar Young, who was sworn to secrecy by Joseph Fielding Smith. Sandra's request, though based on assumption, might have caused immediate alarm in the Church Historian's Office. Sandra speculates that Joseph Fielding Smith had previously cut the 1832 account out of the ledger book because he realized it was problematic. When Smith received Sandra's letter, he may have assumed she possessed insider knowledge. To get ahead of any arguments about hiding evidence, Smith subsequently taped the pages back into the ledger book. "I think he cut it out back in the time of Levi Edgar Young. I mean,

Raised defending the faith, her path to becoming a leading critic of Mormonism was catalyzed by several unexpected influences, including the work of a pioneering female Restoration leader and the startling discovery of historical documents. The Vision of Pauline Hancock Sandra Tanner's husband, Jerald Tanner, was deeply influenced by an obscure Restoration group led by Pauline Hancock. Pauline was a head of her group, called the Church of Christ (Bible Book of Mormon), serving as its minister and preacher. Though she never claimed to be a prophet, she was considered a "deliverer of the message". Crucially, Pauline did claim to have a vision of Christ before the group started meeting as a church. This vision occurred during a transition when she was trying to sort out what she believed, focusing on the "original kernel of Mormonism". She told Christ she couldn't fulfill the calling to tell the world what she had learned because she was a woman, but Christ responded, "I was a man, and they didn't listen to me. So, it doesn't matter that you're a woman. You are called to go out and tell what you've learned". Pauline's group focused on studying the Book of Mormon outside of various splinter groups. Their theology centered on the "oneness idea of God," a modalistic model (though they would not have used the term "modalism"). They aimed for a rejuvenation of the David Whitmer flavor of Mormonism, seeking to go "back to original Mormonism" using just the Bible and Book of Mormon. Jerald Tanner's Cottage Meetings Jerald Tanner became converted to Pauline's message after two visits to Missouri. At age 20 (around 1957 or 1958), Jerald returned to Salt Lake and began holding little cottage meetings at his parents' house. He would play reel-to-reel tapes of Pauline's different sermons or teachings. The purpose of these meetings was to discuss early Mormonism and explain where the Church "went off the track". Sandra's grandmother, a relative by marriage to the Brigham Young family, received an invitation to one of these meetings via a postcard. Sandra, visiting from Southern California during spring break, drove her grandmother to the meeting. Grandmother claimed it was "sort of like a Mormon fireside". Jerald, whom she found "nice looking" and "cute," impressed her with his studies on Mormonism's problems and the group's focus on returning to the Book of Mormon. From Defense to Doubt Sandra's journey of doubt had already been seeded by others. First, her mother and aunt began studying Mormon history in the 1950s after reading Fawn Brodie's book, No Man Knows My History. They were pouring over "apostate literature" and photocopies. Sandra, then in high school, was busy defending the faith, while her mother and aunt were "going into apostasy". Sandra noted that her mother became known as being "too inquisitive" in Sunday school classes, often disrupting the class with questions. Sandra's mother and aunt found James Wardle's barbershop, possibly through Sam Weller's bookstore (which stocked anti-Mormon and polygamy literature). James Wardle was the link that put Sandra's mother in contact with Pauline Hancock's group. Second,

While Sandra is now enjoying life in a condominium in Sandy, Utah, having retired from the stresses of her old neighborhood in Salt Lake City, her journey as a critic began in the late 1950s alongside her husband, Jerald Tanner56. This period of questioning led the newlywed Tanners to explore various splinter groups, resulting in Sandra becoming a temporary convert to a unique movement led by one of the earliest known female leaders in the Restoration: Pauline Hancock's Church of Christ. Critic, Not Anti-Mormon Before diving into her early faith experience, Sandra is careful to distinguish her identity. She notes that she is comfortable being labeled a "Mormon critic," but strongly rejects the term "anti-Mormon.” This is because the "anti-Mormon" label often implies an animosity toward the people, which she does not feel. She condemns any violence against Mormon people. She sees herself as a critic of Mormonism—its doctrines and history—not its followers. Jerald Tanner's Search for the "Start" The Tanners' joint investigation into Mormonism began around 1959. Jerald's personal crisis was spurred around age 18 when his bishop suggested he go on a mission. Jerald began reading critical works, notably Fawn Brodie's book (written in 1945), which was the standard critical source at the time. His investigation led him to seek out local splinter groups, first visiting the Reorganized Church in Salt Lake City. There, he met a barber named James Wardle, who operated a shop that housed one of the largest collections of historic books on early Mormonism. Wardle provided Jerald with a key text that shaped his direction: David Whitmer's pamphlet, An Address to All Believers in Christ (1887). Whitmer's position was that the Book of Mormon was the main thing and that Joseph Smith "got a big head, invented all this other stuff.” This idea became Jerald's litmus test: if there was any truth to Mormonism, it had to be at the start, centered on the Book of Mormon. Jerald even took a trip to Independence, Missouri, to verify Whitmer's claims that the revelations had been changed, specifically noting discrepancies between the current version of the Doctrine and Covenants and the early Book of Commandments. Pauline Hancock and the "Luke-ite" Church of Christ James Wardle also informed Jerald about Pauline Hancock's small Church of Christ group, noting that they aligned more closely with David Whitmer's views than other splinter groups. Pauline Hancock was raised in the Reorganized (RLDS) Church, where her father had served as a pastor in Salt Lake City. She became disillusioned with both the RLDS and the Temple Lot Church. She, her husband, and others who went through similar struggles were deeply impacted by Whitmer's pamphlet. This group, sometimes referred to as "the Luke-ites" because they first met in the home of a Mr. Luke, established their own theological foundation:
