For several years, I performed as a member of the Orchestra at Temple Square, accompanying what was then known as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on *Music and the Spoken Word*.From long Sunday mornings and rehearsals in the Tabernacle to touring, auditions, and eventually leaving the orchestra, this is my honest story of what it was really like behind the scenes. This isn't an exposé. It's a personal memoir about music, faith, and one of the most memorable chapters of my life.Along the way, I discuss:* What rehearsals were really like* The musicians behind the performances* Touring with the orchestra* My changing beliefs while still performing* The emotional power of music* How my time with the orchestra unexpectedly came to an endAlthough I no longer believe in the truth claims of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I remain deeply grateful for the opportunity to make music alongside so many exceptional musicians. Some experiences transcend belief, and beautiful music is one of them.If you enjoy thoughtful conversations about Mormonism, music, faith transitions, and honest personal stories, consider subscribing for more episodes.**#Mormon #ExMormon #TabernacleChoir #TempleSquare #MusicAndTheSpokenWord #LDS #FaithJourney #ClassicalMusic #MormonStories #MormonNewsRoundup**Please consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: kolob@mormonnewsroundup.org Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. One of the most controversial teachings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the idea that paying tithing can determine your worthiness—and even your eligibility for temple ordinances and the highest degree of heaven.Over the years on Mormon News Roundup, I've called out this "pay-to-play" system again and again. In this compilation, I've gathered some of my strongest anti-tithing rants into one episode. From temple recommend interviews to the pressure placed on struggling families, this video examines why many former members see mandatory tithing as one of the most harmful aspects of Mormonism. If you've ever wondered why so many people object to LDS tithing, this is the episode.

In Episode 80 of our LDS Discussions series, Julia, Kolby, and Nemo the Mormon join together for a deep dive into one of the most significant financial controversies in modern Latter-day Saint history: Ensign Peak Advisors and the SEC's investigation into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The discussion begins by examining what Ensign Peak Advisors is, why the Church created an enormous investment reserve, and whether maintaining such a fund is inherently problematic. From there, the panel walks through the timeline leading up to the 2019 whistleblower revelations and the 2023 SEC Order, exploring the Church's filing practices, the creation of 13 shell companies, and the legal findings that concluded the Church intentionally obscured the size of its investment portfolio. Along the way, we analyze statements from Church leaders including Roger Clarke, Christopher Waddell, Elder Ballard, Elder Packer, Joseph F. Smith, Lorenzo Snow, and others, comparing modern financial practices with historical teachings on tithing. We also discuss the evolution of tithing slips, the Church's growing investment portfolio, estimates of annual tithing revenue, David Nielsen's whistleblower allegations, and the ethical implications of the Church's financial secrecy. Finally, the panel examines the SEC's findings in detail, asking difficult questions about honesty, accountability, transparency, and whether a church that teaches integrity should be held to the same legal and ethical standards it expects of its members. This episode provides one of the most comprehensive examinations of the Ensign Peak controversy, combining historical documents, SEC records, Church statements, and primary sources to better understand what happened –and why it matters. If you enjoy these in-depth historical analyses, please like, subscribe, and share this episode. Today I'm speaking with Steven K. Green, Fred H. Paulus Professor of Law and Affiliated Professor of History and Religious Studies at Willamette University. We are discussing his book, American Infidelity: The Gilded Age Battle Over Freethought, Free Love, and Feminism (Oxford University Press, 2026). Since the first permanent Protestant settlement in Jamestown in 1607, Protestant Christianity has waxed and waned through a series of revivals, migrations, and challenges from alternative faiths like Catholicism and Mormonism. The Gilded Age, from roughly 1870 to 1900, was a unique period for Protestantism in American history. Most Americans still subscribed to a Protestant faith, though threats began to arise not from other confessions, but rather from philosophical and scientific challengers. The so-called freethinkers represented a broad range of beliefs and ideas, being united by a mutual skepticism of religious conservatism and traditional sexual and gender mores. American Infidelity tells the story of this tug-of-war for the soul of a nation, with Christianity on one side and the legacy of thinkers like Thomas Paine on the other. What was it like growing up as a girl in Mormonism? What about in Seventh-day Adventism? You might be surprised by how much these two very different religions have in common. In this episode, Melissa Duge Spiers joins Mormonish for an honest conversation about purity culture, modesty, dating, shame, and the expectations placed on women in our respective faith traditions. Melissa shares her experiences growing up Seventh-day Adventist, while I reflect on my own upbringing in the LDS Church. Along the way, we discover striking similarities in the messages we received about our bodies, our worth, and what it meant to be a “good” young woman. This isn't about comparing which religion was “better” or “worse.” It's about exploring the lasting impact of these teachings, sharing our stories with empathy, and talking about what healing and growth can look like on the other side. Whether you were raised Mormon, Seventh-day Adventist, or in another faith tradition, we think you'll find plenty to relate to in this heartfelt conversation. We'd love to hear your own experiences in the comments! Is Mormonism simply another Christian denomination, or does it teach a different gospel? In this episode, we examine the core doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in light of Scripture. We'll compare what Mormonism teaches about God, Jesus Christ, salvation, authority, and eternal life with the truth revealed in the Bible. Topics include: The authority of Scripture vs. additional revelation Who God is according to the Bible The biblical identity of Jesus Christ Salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone The Book of Mormon and other LDS scriptures Temple ordinances, baptism for the dead, and exaltation Practical tips for sharing the gospel with LDS missionaries and friends Our goal is not to attack individuals but to lovingly test every teaching by God's Word (1 John 4:1) and contend for the faith once for all delivered to the saints (Jude 3). Key Scriptures: Galatians 1:6–9, John 1:1–3, Isaiah 43:10, Ephesians 2:8–9, Romans 3:28, Titus 3:5–7, Hebrews 1:1–2. If this episode encourages you, like, subscribe, and share to help proclaim the true gospel of Jesus Christ. Soli Deo Gloria.

As a teenager, she began asking questions about feminism, Church culture, and the role of women, but still considered herself a committed believer. Hoping to strengthen her testimony, she chose to serve a mission and was called to serve in Minneapolis, Minnesota. What followed would fundamentally reshape her relationship with the Church. Hailey was serving her mission when COVID-19 broke out, and was sent home. She was eventually allowed to return to her mission, but was then informed that her service would be extended by an additional six months. She describes feeling trapped by the decision, unable to simply return home on her own because missionaries do not control their own housing, transportation, or finances.Throughout the conversation, we discuss why so many young members—particularly young women—are questioning or leaving the LDS Church today. From gender roles and institutional authority to diversity, politics, and personal autonomy, Hailey offers a thoughtful perspective on why an increasing number of young people no longer feel at home in Mormonism.___________________YouTubeShow NotesAt Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals.  Our overall mission is to: 1. After interacting with thousands of Latter-day Saints on X (formerly Twitter) since launching this channel in 2022, I've noticed some remarkably consistent patterns. In this video I discuss:* Why relatively few major Mormon critics actively engage on X* How faithful Latter-day Saints rapidly amplify each other's accounts* The role X Premium plays in expanding Mormon voices online* Why evidence so often gets replaced with personal attacks* The recurring accusations critics receive from believers* Why feelings and testimony aren't reliable methods for determining truth* The difference between utility and truth* Why I continue engaging directly in comment sections* The challenges of having productive conversations about Mormon truth claims* The enormous gap between my short-form and long-form audiencesThis isn't a criticism of every individual Latter-day Saint. Many members are thoughtful, kind, and sincere. Rather, it's an examination of recurring online behaviors I've observed after years of public conversations surrounding Mormonism.Whether you agree with my conclusions or strongly disagree, I encourage you to engage with the actual arguments presented rather than assumptions about my motivations. If you enjoy long-form discussions about Mormonism, religion, skepticism, and evidence, please consider subscribing. In this week's episode, host Peter Sherman sits down with Spiritual Formation Pastor Matt Summers to unpack Sunday's message, The Ladder of Modern Prophets. In the LDS system, salvation is often framed as a partnership where we provide maximum effort and God provides the supplement. But striving to follow laws, ordinances, and temple works to achieve exaltation creates an exhausting, moving finish line. It leaves us trapped in the anxiety of never knowing if we have done enough to qualify for God's presence. Together, Peter and Matt explore the contrast offered by the gospel. Grace is not a top-off to patch up our performance, and the work of Jesus is not a supplement to our effort; it is a total substitute for it. Instead of climbing a spiritual ladder to prove our value, we discover the life-changing freedom of stepping off the performance loop and living from the worth Jesus has already given us. Listen to the Menlo Midweek Podcast Tune into new episodes released every Wednesday as we break down Sunday's sermon, share behind-the-scenes insights, and discuss practical ways to live out our faith. What if grace isn't a reward for climbing a religious ladder, but a gift that meets you right at the bottom? Pastor of Spiritual Formation Matt Summers continues our Let's Be Honest series by exploring the theology of the Latter-day Saints Church and the idea of grace after all we can do. In a system where salvation is treated as a partnership of human effort and divine supplement, it is easy to get trapped in the anxiety of never knowing if you have done enough. While modern prophets offer frameworks to reach godhood, Christianity points to a God who came down the ladder to reach us. Instead of an endless checklist of requirements, the gospel offers the life-changing freedom of a grace that cannot be earned. We look at the core differences regarding who God is, who Jesus is, and how we are saved, discovering that our worth does not live on the next rung of performance. Join us as we learn to trade striving for the security of a Savior, realizing that when the frameworks falter, Jesus alone is enough. When Men Become Gods: Mormon Polygamist Warren Jeffs, His Cult of Fear, and the Women Who Fought BackIn When Men Become Gods, New York Times bestselling author Stephen Singular casts a light on a dark corner of religious extremism. He reveals a group of fundamentalists operating in the present-day United States, where teenage girls are kept in virtual bondage in the name of upholding the "sacred principle" of polygamy. As the leader and self-proclaimed prophet of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints, a sect of Mormonism based in isolated southern Utah, Warren Jeffs held sway over thousands of followers for nearly a decade. His rule was utterly tyrannical. In addition to coercing young girls into polygamous marriages with older men, Jeffs reputedly took scores of wives, many of whom were his father's widows. Television, radio, and newspapers were shunned, creating a hidden community where polygamy was prized above all else. But in 2007, after a two-year manhunt that landed him on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List, Jeffs's reign was forcefully ended. He was convicted of rape as an accomplice for his role in arranging a marriage between a fourteen-year-old girl and her nineteen-year-old first cousin. In When Men Become Gods, Edgar Award nominee Stephen Singular traces Jeffs's rise to power and the concerted effort that led to his downfall. It was a movement championed by law enforcement, private investigators, the Feds, and perhaps most vocal of all, a group of former polygamous wives seeking to liberate young women from the arranged marriages they'd once endured. The book offers new revelations into a nearly impenetrable enclave---a place of nineteenth-century attire, inbreeding, and eerie seclusion---providing readers with a rare glimpse into a tradition that's almost a century old, but that has only now been exposed.https://amzn.to/4wbSxkhBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
