Was Joseph Smith's relationship with Fanny Alger an early plural marriage, a sexless sealing, or a scandalous sexual affair? Long before Nauvoo polygamy, secret sealings, or theological justifications, there was Fanny Alger; a teenage girl living in Joseph and Emma Smith's home in Kirtland, Ohio. When the relationship was discovered, it triggered scandal, apostasy, and one of the earliest crises in Mormon leadership. In this episode, we start by taking a look into the life of Fanny Alger sharing details of her life that are little known even to those familiar with Mormon history. We then examine every major historical source connected to the Fanny Alger story including letters, later reminiscences, church disciplinary records. Then onto the Apologetics and what they are trying to resolve. And lastly we share something that hasn’t been used by either side in this discussion and this you won’t want to miss. We ask the uncomfortable questions: • Why did Oliver Cowdery call the incident a “dirty, nasty, filthy scrape”? • Why did church leaders discipline Cowdery for accusing Joseph of adultery — without denying the accusation itself? • Why does Fanny Alger quietly disappear from official church records for decades? • And do apologetic claims that “we can't know what happened” actually hold up? We also follow Fanny's life after Mormonism; her marriage, property ownership, and long, stable adulthood and ask what her silence might tell us about power, authority, and who controls the narrative. This is not folklore. This is not anti-Mormon spin. This is history read carefully. AJ describes it like “grinding for godhood”—a life built on steps, worthiness, temple goals, and constant striving. But then the foundation started to crack. For AJ, some of the doctrinal history raised unsettling questions (including ideas like “blood atonement,” which they mention they'll unpack later). For Brandi, the tipping point was watching changes in the LDS church after COVID and feeling like the church was shifting in a more progressive direction. She tried to address it the way a devoted member would: she wrote letters to Salt Lake City headquarters about what she saw as inconsistency—especially related to abortion and human life. She wasn't trying to tear anything down. She genuinely believed the LDS church was true, and she wanted it to be consistent. But the response felt dismissive—more like a polite pat on the head than a meaningful engagement. That frustration pushed them into a place they never thought they'd go: researching.Looking for answers… without wanting to “deconstruct”Brandi makes an important clarification: they weren't hunting for “gotcha” moments. They didn't go searching because they assumed the church was false. In fact, they needed it to be true. That's why reading outside sources felt dangerous. AJ describes that fear as avoiding the “cognitive dissonance fire”—because their hearts were convinced, and they didn't want their minds persuaded that everything was a lie.But once they started reading, the “genie” didn't go back in the bottle. They looked at sources like MormonThink because it included multiple perspectives—both critical claims and apologetic responses. That felt more balanced. Still, it wasn't official, and Brandi felt guilty even being there. Eventually, as more historical issues piled up (like multiple First Vision accounts, questions surrounding the Book of Abraham, and other details they had never been taught), Brandi felt desperate for the church itself to clarify things. So they turned to the Gospel Topics Essays—official LDS content hosted on the LDS website. That's where everything shifted.Instead of restoring confidence, the essays confirmed key issues and, in Brandi's view, exposed more “spin” than clarity. For the first time, she seriously wrestled with the question: What if the church isn't true? The crossroads: nuance or truthAJ explains how people often survive early doubts by “nuancing” their faith—making room for uncomfortable data while keeping the system intact. But eventually, they reached a crossroads: Would they live in a...

The Word That Endures Forever: Creeds, Canon, and the Test of Doctrinal Consistency  In this foundational teaching, Jacob Prasch examines the nature of biblical Christianity by contrasting the unchanging authority of Scripture with the evolving doctrines of religion. Beginning with the early creeds—the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed—he explains how the “line of faith” preserved essential Christian truth before the New Testament canon was fully written and recognized. From there, the message traces a consistent biblical warning against adding to or subtracting from God's Word, drawing on Deuteronomy, Proverbs, Isaiah, the Gospels, the Epistles, and Revelation. Prasch argues that while Scripture remains coherent and self-consistent, false expressions of Judaism, Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Islam, Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, and modern ecumenical and emergent movements are marked by progressive doctrinal invention and internal contradiction. By documenting historical developments, shifting dogmas, and extra-biblical authorities, the teaching exposes religion as man's attempt to reach God, in contrast to the gospel—God's unchanging revelation reaching fallen humanity. The message concludes with a clear test of truth: what is from God remains consistent, but what adds to His Word will inevitably prove unstable, contradictory, and false. This teaching was originally taught on RTN TV's "Word for the Weekend" on July 6, 2024 and can be found on RTN and Moriel's YouTube and ministry channels. Word for the Weekend streams live every Saturday. See RTNTV.org for more information.

A packed campus, a live mic, and a question that cut to the bone: is the historicity of the LDS church stronger than Protestant Christianity? Noah Nielsen—born into a deeply LDS family, now a Christian and Division I runner—was there at UVU with his phone out, capturing the exchange about Nephites, Lamanites, witnesses, and the golden plates moments before a single gunshot froze the crowd. His perspective ties together two seismic moments: leaving a faith that shaped his childhood and surviving a tragedy that reshaped his sense of safety.A student-athlete recounts the day a campus Q&A turned deadly and the long journey that led him from deep LDS roots to Christian faith. We explore evidence claims about Mormonism, the missing clips controversy, trauma after the shooting, and the costly choices of conviction.• UVU event setup, lack of security, and crowd mood• Why Noah filmed the LDS exchange and what was said• Historicity challenges: Nephites, Lamanites, witnesses, golden plates• Family's exit from LDS after research and social fallout• BYU transfer, rebaptism ultimatum, and walking away from a scholarship• Theology contrast between biblical monotheism and exaltation claims• Firsthand account of the shot, panic, and escape• PTSD, returning to campus, and rebuilding trust in public spaces• The guiding question of conscience and costWe walk through Noah's backstory from Northern Ireland to Utah, where church life was family life. When his mother's sincere study unearthed troubling sources—the Book of Abraham, polyandry, the Kinderhook plates, Nauvoo Expositor, and Carthage Jail—their home shifted from certainty to questions. The social cost in Utah was immediate and painful, culminating in a move across the country to breathe again. Noah's own study moved beyond history into Scripture, where the biblical insistence on one uncreated God clashed with the LDS path of exaltation. That conviction would be tested later when a rebaptism ultimatum was tied to his BYU scholarship. He declined and rebuilt at UVU under a punishing deadline. Then there's the day itself. Noah arrived early to a pulsing amphitheater with little visible security. He filmed the faith debate that many claimed never happened, watched the dialogue tighten around evidence, and then heard the shot. What followed was panic, a scramble through bottlenecked exits, and the long shadow of trauma: avoiding campus, scanning every room, and relearning how to be in public places. Through it all, Noah returns to a simple question that steers his choices: what's the point of gaining the world if you lose your soul?If you value honest stories about faith, freedom of speech, and the cost of conviction, this conversation will stay with you. More of Mormonism's canonized revelations originated in or near Kirtland than any other place. Yet many of the events connected with those revelations and their 1830s historical context have faded over time. Barely twenty-five years after the first of these Ohio revelations, Brigham Young lamented in 1856: “These revelations, after a lapse of years, become mystified [sic] to those who were not personally acquainted with the circumstances at the time they were given.” He gloomily predicted that eventually the revelations “may be as mysterious to our children . . . as the revelations contained in the Old and New Testaments are to this generation.” Now, more than 150 years later, the distance between what Brigham Young and his Kirtland contemporaries considered common knowledge and our understanding of the same material today has widened into a sometimes daunting gap. Mark Staker narrows the chasm in Hearken, O Ye People by reconstructing the cultural experiences by which Kirtland's Latter-day Saints made sense of the revelations Joseph Smith pronounced. This volume rebuilds that exciting decade using clues from numerous archives, privately held records, museum collections, and even the soil where early members planted corn and homes. From this vast array of sources he shapes a detailed narrative of weather, religious backgrounds, dialect differences, race relations, theological discussions, food preparation, frontier violence, astronomical phenomena, and myriad daily customs of nineteenth-century life. The result is a “from the ground up” experience that today's Latter-day Saints can all but walk into and touch. Mark Lyman Staker was a senior researcher in the Church History Department of the LDS Church when this was written. He received his PhD in cultural anthropology from University of Florida. For more than fifteen years, Mark has been involved in historic sites restoration and nineteenth-century expressions of the Latter-day Saint experience. He received the J. Talmage Jones Award of Excellence for an Outstanding Article on Mormon History from the Mormon History Association, and he has been involved in numerous museum exhibits. He and his wife, Kimberly, are the parents of seven children and live in West Bountiful, Utah. Many Latter-day Saints long for a more inclusive church, including less of an emphasis on doctrines in favor of learning to listen better to each other and open our hearts to more diverse points of view. They are bored by and are unmoved by certainty. They want a deeper connection with the Divine (however they picture that). They want to be heard and understood for who they are and not feel they have to perform the role of "perfect" Mormon. This episode looks closely at the concept of "Big Tent" Mormonism. How can we help bring it about? What are the main obstacles standing in the way of us learning to be more welcoming to everyone? How can we broaden awareness of faith struggles and talk about them in genuine ways (and not just offering quick responses and rushing to get back to the lesson)? Listen in as LDF host Dan Wotherspoon engages with show regular Terri Petersen and the wise historian and church watcher Greg Prince! We think you will really enjoy the conversation!

In this episode of Mormon Stories Podcast, we talk with Jean Daniel about his journey from a devoted Mormon convert to a Christian pastor. Growing up in Boston, Jean discovered Mormonism as a teenager and found in it a strong sense of structure, identity, and belonging. He served a mission in San Diego, CA and was later married in the Newport beach temple. While studying at Harvard and Yale Divinity Schools, Jean began to see the value in many Christian traditions and ultimately let go of the idea of “one true church.” He shares how this shift led him toward a more open, hopeful approach to Christianity grounded in community. Today, Jean serves as the National Pastor of Canada for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). This is a thoughtful conversation about faith after Mormonism and building a meaningful spiritual community with progressive beliefs. Please purchase the book here.To support this series please donate here. Email us at podcast@pursueGOD.org.Donate Now--How the Holy Spirit Works Personally (and Why Mormonism Leaves People Unsure)In the last episode, we talked about how a biblical church doesn't need one “capital P” Prophet to speak for God. Jesus didn't set up His church to be led by a single man with exclusive access to heaven's messages. Instead, the book of Acts shows something radically different: God gives His Holy Spirit to every believer, revealing truth through Scripture and confirming it through the people of God.But here's the question that hits closer to home: How does the Holy Spirit work on a personal level? That's where this conversation gets especially helpful—because Layne lived for 40 years inside Mormonism, where the Holy Spirit is often treated like something you earn, maintain, or even lose. And if you grew up LDS, you know the anxiety: Do I have the Holy Ghost? Did I lose it? Am I worthy enough today? The “Holy Ghost” in Mormonism: A Gift You're Never Quite Sure You HaveIn Mormon teaching, people are told about the “gift of the Holy Ghost,” along with ideas like “confirmations,” “warm feelings,” and the famous “burning in the bosom.” It's often described as something that comes after baptism, through priesthood hands, and after ongoing obedience and ordinances. But here's the problem: many Latter-day Saints live with what Layne calls Holy Spirit insecurity. You might feel something during prayer or a testimony meeting—then you mess up later and wonder if God is gone. The whole cycle can become spiritually exhausting, emotionally draining, and mentally confusing. Instead of a steady relationship with God, you're chasing a spiritual signal that feels like it comes and goes. The Holy Spirit Is a “He,” Not an “It”One of the practical moments in this episode is when the guys stop and talk about pronouns—because it reveals something deeper. In biblical Christianity, the Holy Spirit isn't an impersonal force. He is a person. Not a “thing” or “energy” or “vibe.” He has personhood. That's why Christians speak of Him as “He,” not because the Spirit has a gender, but because He's personal—God Himself dwelling in believers.Mormonism may technically describe the Holy Ghost as a person, but it's within a very different framework: Father, Son, and Holy Ghost as separate beings (and functionally separate gods). That changes everything. Instead of God's direct presence, the Holy Ghost becomes more like a messenger—someone sent—while leaving people unsure what God the Father is doing, and unsure whether they can really trust what they're experiencing.Feelings vs. Fruit: What Are You Actually Chasing?A big “aha” in this conversation is how Mormon “spiritual feelings” often function differently...

Welcome to Part 28 of our John G. Turner series of the Joseph Smith Podcast! Today we continue our deep dive into the Egyptian Materials, the Book of Abraham, and how its theology shaped Mormonism's most distinctive doctrines –including premortal existence, exaltation, intelligences, and the idea of God becoming God.This episode explores how Joseph Smith resumed work on the papyri in Nauvoo, publicly introduced the Book of Abraham, and used it as a vehicle for unfolding expansive cosmology and theology. We examine the papyri themselves, the facsimiles, translation claims, the catalyst theory, and why there is little evidence that key scrolls are missing.More importantly, we trace how the Book of Abraham becomes the theological backbone for ideas that later crystalize in the King Follett Discourse, the Plan of Salvation, the War in Heaven, and the belief that humans can become Gods. This is Part 2 of our discussion on the Egyptian Materials and their lasting influence on Mormon doctrine. Please purchase the book here.To support this series please donate here.
